SONoMA: A Service Oriented Network Measurement Architecture

To characterize the structure, dynamics and operational state of the Internet it requires distributed measurements. Although in the last decades several systems capable to do this have been created, the easy access of these infrastructures and orchestration of complex measurements is not solved. We propose a system architecture that combines the flexibility of mature network measurement infrastructures such as PlanetLab or ETOMIC with the general accessibility and popularity of public services like Web based bandwidth measurement or traceroute servers. To realize these requirements we developed a multi-layer architecture based on Web Services and the basic principles of SOA, which is a very popular paradigm in distributed business application development. Our approach opens the door to perform complex network measurements, handles heterogeneous measurement devices, automatically stores the results in a public database and protects against malicious users as well. To demonstrate our concept we developed a public prototype system, called SONoMA.

Shortest path discovery of complex networks

In this paper we present an analytic study of sampled networks in the case of some important shortest-path sampling models. We present analytic formulas for the probability of edge discovery in the case of an evolving and a static network model. We also show that the number of discovered edges in a finite network scales much slower than predicted by earlier mean field models. Finally, we calculate the degree distribution of sampled networks, and we demonstrate that they are analogous to a destructed network obtained by randomly removing edges from the original network.

Distribution of Edge Load in Scale-free Trees

Node betweenness has been studied recently by a number of authors, but until now less attention has been paid to edge betweenness. In this paper, we present an exact analytic study of edge betweenness in evolving scale-free and non-scale-free trees. We aim at the probability distribution of edge betweenness under the condition that a local property, the in-degree of the ``younger'' node of a randomly selected edge, is known. En route to the conditional distribution of edge betweenness the exact joint distribution of cluster size and in-degree, and its one dimensional marginal distributions have been presented in the paper as well. From the derived probability distributions the expectation values of different quantities have been calculated. Our results provide an exact solution not only for infinite, but for finite networks as well.

Stochastic trace formulas

The spectrum of the evolution Operator associated with a nonlinear stochastic flow with additive noise is evaluated by diagonalization in a polynomial basis. The method works for arbitrary noise strength. In the weak noise limit we formulate a new perturbative expansion for the spectrum of the stochastic evolution Operator in terms of expansions around the classical periodic orbits. The diagonalization of such operators is easier to implement than the standard Feynman diagram perturbation theory. The result is a stochastic analog of the Gutzwiller semiclassical spectral determinant with the ``$\hbar$'' corrections computed to at least two orders more than what has so far been attainable in stochastic and quantum-mechanical applications, supplemented by the estimate for the late terms in the asymptotic saddlepoint expansions.

A New Method for Computing Topological Pressure

The topological pressure introduced by Ruelle and similar quantities describe dynamical multifractal properties of dynamical systems. These are important characteristics of mesoscopic systems in the classical regime. Original definition of these quantities are based on the symbolic description of the dynamics. It is hard or impossible to find symbolic description and generating partition to a general dynamical system, therefore these quantities are often not accessible for further studies. Here we present a new method by which the symbolic description can be omitted. We apply the method for a mixing and an intermittent system.

Periodic Orbit Theory of Diffraction

An extension of the Gutzwiller trace formula is given that includes diffraction effects due to hard wall scatterers or other singularities. The new trace formula involves periodic orbits which have arcs on the surface of singularity and which correspond to creping waves. A new family of resonances in the two disk scattering system can be well described which is completely missing if only the traditional periodic orbits are used.

Soft Turbulence in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer

In this work we compare the spectral properties of the daily medium temperature fluctuations with the experimental results of the Chicago Group, in which the local temperature fluctuations were measured in a helium cell. The results suggest that the dynamics of the daily temperature fluctuations is determined by the oft turbulent state of the atmospheric boundary layer, which state is significantly different from low dimensional chaos.

A Fredholm Determinant for Semi-classical Quantization

We investigate a new type of approximation to quantum determinants, the ``\qFd", and test numerically the conjecture that for Axiom A hyperbolic flows such determinants have a larger domain of analyticity and better convergence than the \qS s derived from the \Gt. The conjecture is supported by numerical investigations of the 3-disk repeller, a normal-form model of a flow, and a model 2-$d$ map.

Entire Fredholm determinants for Evaluation of Semi-classical and Thermodynamical Spectra

Proofs that Fredholm determinants of transfer operators for hyperbolic flows are entire can be extended to a large new class of multiplicative evolution operators. We construct such operators both for the Gutzwiller semi-classical quantum mechanics and for classical thermodynamic formalism, and introduce a new functional determinant which is expected to be entire for Axiom A flows, and whose zeros coincide with the zeros of the Gutzwiler-Voros zeta function.
