A four-way Szegő theorem for $L^p$ extremal polynomials on subsets of $\mathbb R$

We prove a four-way Szegő theorem for $L^p$ extremal polynomials on compact supports $K=K_0\cup X\subset\mathbb R$, where $K_0$ is a regular compact set and $X$ is a finite or countable set of isolated points. For every $2\le p\le\infty$, including the weighted Chebyshev case $p=\infty$ under the corresponding assumptions on the weight, any three of the Parreau--Widom condition for $K_0$, the Blaschke condition for $X$, the Szegő condition for the weight, and the Widom condition $0<\limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty}W_{p,n}<\infty$ imply the fourth. As a consequence, for every regular compact set $K\subset\mathbb R$ of positive capacity, the Parreau--Widom condition is equivalent both to boundedness of the unweighted Chebyshev Widom factors and to boundedness of the equilibrium-measure $L^2$ Widom factors. For every $0<p\le\infty$, we also prove upper and lower bounds for the Widom factors in which the contributions of the weight, the isolated points, and the gaps of $K_0$ appear separately. Finally, we give examples illustrating the sharpness of our results. For $p=2$, we realize every combination of the following five properties that is not excluded by the implications proved in this work: the Parreau--Widom condition, the Blaschke condition, the Szegő condition, boundedness of the Widom factors from above, and boundedness of the Widom factors away from zero.

Unbounded Widom factors for orthogonal and residual polynomials

We study Widom factors for (a) monic orthogonal polynomials in $L^2$ with respect to the equilibrium measure of a compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}$ and (b) residual polynomials normalized at an exterior point. Using weakly equilibrium Cantor sets $K(γ)$, we prove: (1) Given any sequence $(c_n)$ with subexponential growth, there exists a non-polar Cantor set $K(γ)$, depending on $(c_n)$, such that the $L^2$ Widom factors of the associated orthogonal polynomials (with respect to the equilibrium measure of $K(γ)$) exceed $c_n$ for every $n$. (2) For the same $K(γ)$ built from $(c_n)$ and each exterior point $x_0\in\mathbb{R}\setminus K(γ)$, the residual Widom factors satisfy power-type lower bounds with a Harnack-distance exponent $τ_{x_0}\in(0,1)$: they are bounded below by $c_n^{τ_{x_0}}$ for all degrees when $x_0$ lies in an unbounded gap, and along a subsequence of degrees when $x_0$ lies in a bounded gap. Consequently, if, in addition, $(c_n)$ is monotone increasing and unbounded, then the sequence of residual Widom factors is unbounded for every $x_0\in\mathbb{R}\setminus K(γ)$. The proofs combine inverse-image constructions, capacity comparisons for period-$n$ sets, harmonic-measure representations for differences of Green functions, and alternation principles on nested approximants.

Widom factors in $\mathbb C^n$

We generalize the theory of Widom factors to the $\mathbb C^n$ setting. We define Widom factors of compact subsets $K\subset \mathbb C^n$ associated with multivariate orthogonal polynomials and weighted Chebyshev polynomials. We show that on product subsets $K=K_1\times\cdots\times K_n$ of $\mathbb C^n$, where each $K_j$ is a non-polar compact subset of $\mathbb C$, these quantities have universal lower bounds which directly extend one dimensional results. Under the additional assumption that each $K_j$ is a subset of the real line, we provide improved lower bounds for Widom factors for some weight functions $w$; in particular, for the case $w\equiv 1$. Finally, we define the Mahler measure of a multivariate polynomial relative to $K\subset \mathbb C^n$ and obtain lower bounds for this quantity on product sets.

Lower Bounds for Weighted Chebyshev and Orthogonal Polynomials

We derive optimal asymptotic and non-asymptotic lower bounds on the Widom factors for weighted Chebyshev and orthogonal polynomials on compact subsets of the real line. In the Chebyshev case we extend the optimal non-asymptotic lower bound previously known only in a handful of examples to regular compact sets and a large class weights. Using the non-asymptotic lower bound, we extend Widom's asymptotic lower bound for weights bounded away from zero to a large class of weights with zeros including weights with strong zeros and infinitely many zeros. As an application of the asymptotic lower bound we extend Bernstein's 1931 asymptotics result for weighted Chebyshev polynomials on an interval to arbitrary Riemann integrable weights with finitely many zeros and to some continuous weights with infinitely many zeros. In the case of orthogonal polynomials, we derive optimal asymptotic and non-asymptotic lower bound on arbitrary regular compact sets for a large class of weights in the non-asymptotic case and for arbitrary Szegő class weights in the asymptotic case, extending previously known bounds on finite gap and Parreau--Widom sets.

Extremal polynomials on a Jordan arc

Let $Γ$ be a $C^{2+}$ Jordan arc and let $Γ_0$ be the open arc which consists of interior points of $Γ$. We find concrete upper and lower bounds for the limit of Widom factors for $L_2(μ)$ extremal polynomials on $Γ$ which was given in [18]. In addition, we show that the upper bound for the limit supremum of Widom factors for the weighted Chebyshev polynomials which was obtained in [18] can be improved once two normal derivatives of the Green function do not agree at one point $z\in Γ_0$. We also show that if $Γ_0$ is not analytic then we have improved upper bounds.

Widom factors for generalized Jacobi measures

We study optimal lower and upper bounds for Widom factors $W_{\infty,n}(K,w)$ associated with Chebyshev polynomials for the weights $w(x)=\sqrt{1+x}$ and $w(x)=\sqrt{1-x}$ on compact subsets of $[-1,1]$. We show which sets saturate these bounds. We consider Widom factors $W_{2,n}(μ)$ for $L_2(μ)$ extremal polynomials for measures of the form $dμ(x)=(1-x)^α(1+x)^βdμ_K(x)$ where $α+β\geq 1$, $α,β\in\mathbb{N}\cup \{0\}$ and $μ_K$ is the equilibrium measure of a compact regular set $K$ in $[-1,1]$ with $\pm 1\in K$. We show that for such measures the improved lower bound $[W_{2,n}(μ)]^2\geq 2S(μ)$ holds. For the special cases $dμ(x)=(1-x^2)dμ_K(x)$, $dμ(x)=(1-x)dμ_K(x)$, $dμ(x)=(1+x)dμ_K(x)$ we determine which sets saturate this lower bound and discuss how saturated lower bounds for $[W_{2,n}(μ)]^2$ and $W_{\infty,n}(K,w)$ are related.

On the Widom factors for $L_p$ extremal polynomials

We continue our study of the Widom factors for $L_p(μ)$ extremal polynomials initiated in [4]. In this work we characterize sets for which the lower bounds obtained in [4] are saturated, establish continuity of the Widom factors with respect to the measure $μ$, and show that despite the lower bound $[W_{2,n}(μ_K)]^2\geq 2S(μ_K)$ for the equilibrium measure $μ_K$ on a compact set $K\subset\mathbb R$ the general lower bound $[W_{p,n}(μ)]^p\geq S(μ)$ is optimal even for measures $dμ=wdμ_K$ with polynomial weights $w$ on $K\subset\mathbb R$. We also study pull-back measures under polynomial pre-images introduced in [16, 23] and obtain invariance of the Widom factors for such measures. Lastly, we study in detail the Widom factors for orthogonal polynomials with respect to the equilibrium measure on a circular arc and, in particular, find their limit, infimum, and supremum and show that they are strictly monotone increasing with the degree and strictly monotone decreasing with the length of the arc.

Sharp lower bounds for the Widom factors on the real line

We derive lower bounds for the $L^p(μ)$ norms of monic extremal polynomials with respect to compactly supported probability measures $μ$. We obtain a sharp universal lower bound for all $0<p<\infty$ and all measures in the Szegő class and an improved lower bound on $L^2(μ)$ norm for several classes of orthogonal polynomials including Jacobi polynomials, isospectral torus of a finite gap set and orthogonal polynomials with respect to the equilibrium measure of an arbitrary non-polar compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$.

Szegő's Condition on Compact subsets of $\mathbb{C}$

Let $K$ be a non-polar compact subset of $\mathbb{C}$ and $μ_K$ be its equilibrium measure. Let $μ$ be a unit Borel measure supported on a compact set which contains the support of $μ_K$. We prove that a Szegő condition in terms of the Radon-Nikodym derivative of $μ$ with respect to $μ_K$ implies that $$\inf_n \frac{\|P_n(\cdot;μ)\|_{L^2(\mathbb{C};μ)}}{\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n}>0.$$ We show that $\frac{\|P_n(\cdot;μ_K)\|_{L^2(\mathbb{C};μ_K)}}{\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n}\geq 1$ for any compact non-polar set $K$. We also prove that under an additional assumption, unboundedness of the sequence $\left(\frac{\|P_n(\cdot;μ_K)\|_{L^2(\mathbb{C};μ_K)}}{\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n}\right)$ implies that $K$ satisfies the Parreau-Widom condition.

Orthogonal polynomials on Cantor sets of zero Lebesgue measure

In this survey article, we review some results and conjectures related to orthogonal polynomials on Cantor sets. The main purpose of this paper is to emphasize the role of equilibrium measures in order to have a general theory of sufficiently good measures (measures that behave similarly to measures which are in the Szegő class and the isospectral torus in the finite gap case) supported on totally disconnected subsets of $\mathbb{R}$. We present some open problems a number of which can be studied numerically.

Orthogonal polynomials on generalized Julia sets

We extend results by Barnsley et al. about orthogonal polynomials on Julia sets to the case of generalized Julia sets. The equilibrium measure is considered. In addition, we discuss optimal smoothness of Green functions and Parreau-Widom criterion for a special family of real generalized Julia sets.

Orthogonal polynomials associated with equilibrium measures on $\mathbb{R}$

Let $K$ be a non-polar compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$ and $μ_K$ denote the equilibrium measure of $K$. Furthermore, let $P_n\left(\cdot, μ_K\right)$ be the $n$-th monic orthogonal polynomial for $μ_K$. It is shown that $\|P_n\left(\cdot, μ_K\right)\|_{L^2(μ_K)}$, the Hilbert norm of $P_n\left(\cdot, μ_K\right)$ in $L^2(μ_K)$, is bounded below by $\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n$ for each $n\in\mathbb{N}$. A sufficient condition is given for $\displaystyle\left(\|P_n\left(\cdot;μ_K\right)\|_{L^2(μ_K)}/\mathrm{Cap}(K)^n\right)_{n=1}^\infty$ to be unbounded. More detailed results are presented for sets which are union of finitely many intervals.

Asymptotic properties of Jacobi matrices for a family of fractal measures

We study the properties and asymptotics of the Jacobi matrices associated with equilibrium measures of the weakly equilibrium Cantor sets. These family of Cantor sets were defined and different aspects of orthogonal polynomials on them were studied recently. Our main aim is numerically examine some conjectures concerning orthogonal polynomials which do not directly follow from previous results. We also compare our results with more general conjectures made for recurrence coefficients associated with fractal measures supported on $\mathbb{R}$.

Spacing properties of the zeros of orthogonal polynomials on Cantor sets via a sequence of polynomial mappings

Let $μ$ be a probability measure with an infinite compact support on $\mathbb{R}$. Let us further assume that $(F_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is a sequence of orthogonal polynomials for $μ$ where $(f_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ is a sequence of nonlinear polynomials and $F_n:=f_n\circ\dots\circ f_1$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that if there is an $s_0\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $0$ is a root of $f_n^\prime$ for each $n>s_0$ then the distance between any two zeros of an orthogonal polynomial for $μ$ of a given degree greater than $1$ has a lower bound in terms of the distance between the set of critical points and the set of zeros of some $F_k$. Using this, we find sharp bounds from below and above for the infimum of distances between the consecutive zeros of orthogonal polynomials for singular continuous measures.

Chebyshev polynomials on generalized Julia sets

Let $(f_n)_{n=1}^\infty$ be a sequence of nonlinear polynomials satisfying some mild conditions. Furthermore, let $F_m(z)=(f_m\circ f_{m-1}\ldots \circ f_1)(z)$ and $ρ_m$ be the leading coefficient for $F_m$. It is shown that on the Julia set $J_{(f_n)}$, the Chebyshev polynomial of the degree deg${F_m}$ is of the form $F_m(z)/ρ_m-τ_m$ for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$ where $τ_m\in\mathbb{C}$. This generalizes the result obtained for autonomous Julia sets.
