Jet energy loss and high $p_T$ photon production in hot quark-gluon plasma

Jet-quenching and photon production at high transverse momentum are studied at RHIC energies, together with the correlation between jets and photons. The energy loss of hard partons traversing the hot QGP is evaluated in the AMY formalism, consistently taking into account both induced gluon emission and elastic collisions. The production of high $p_T$ photons in Au+Au collisions is calculated, incorporating a complete set of photon-production channels. Putting all these ingredients together with a (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamical description of the thermal medium, we achieve a good description of the current experimental data. Our results illustrate that the interaction between hard jets and the soft medium is important for a complete understanding of jet quenching, photon production, and photon-hadron correlations in relativistic nuclear collisions.

Energy and momentum deposited into a QCD medium by a jet shower

Hard partons moving through a dense QCD medium lose energy by radiative emissions and elastic scatterings. Deposition of the radiative contribution into the medium requires rescattering of the radiated gluons. We compute the total energy loss and its deposition into the medium self-consistently within the same formalism, assuming perturbative interaction between probe and medium. The same transport coefficients that control energy loss of the hard parton determine how the energy is deposited into the medium; this allows a parameter free calculation of the latter once the former have been computed or extracted from experimental energy loss data. We compute them for a perturbative medium in hard thermal loop (HTL) approximation. Assuming that the deposited energy-momentum is equilibrated after a short relaxation time, we compute the medium's hydrodynamical response and obtain a conical pattern that is strongly enhanced by showering.

Radiative and Collisional Energy Loss, and Photon-Tagged Jets at RHIC

The suppression of single jets at high transverse momenta in a quark-gluon plasma is studied at RHIC energies, and the additional information provided by a photon tag is included. The energy loss of hard jets traversing through the medium is evaluated in the AMY formalism, by consistently taking into account the contributions from radiative events and from elastic collisions at leading order in the coupling. The strongly-interacting medium in these collisions is modelled with (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamics. Putting these ingredients together with a complete set of photon-production processes, we present a calculation of the nuclear modification of single jets and photon-tagged jets at RHIC.

Systematic Comparison of Jet Energy-Loss Schemes in a 3D hydrodynamic medium

We utilize a 3D hydrodynamic model to provide the medium evolution for a systematic comparison of jet energy-loss calculations in the BDMPS/ASW, HT and AMY approaches. We find that the parameters of all three calculations can be adjusted to provide a good description of inclusive data on $R_{AA}$ versus transverse momentum. However, we do observe slight differences in their predictions for the azimuthal angular dependence of $R_{AA}$ vs. $p_T$. We also note that the value of the transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ needed in the three approaches to describe the data differs significantly.
