Application of machine learning techniques to lepton energy reconstruction in water Cherenkov detectors

The application of machine learning techniques to the reconstruction of lepton energies in water Cherenkov detectors is discussed and illustrated for TITUS, a proposed intermediate detector for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. It is found that applying these techniques leads to an improvement of more than 50% in the energy resolution for all lepton energies compared to an approach based upon lookup tables. Machine learning techniques can be easily applied to different detector configurations and the results are comparable to likelihood-function based techniques that are currently used.

RapidSim: an application for the fast simulation of heavy-quark hadron decays

RapidSim is a lightweight application for the fast simulation of phase space decays of beauty and charm quark hadrons, allowing for quick studies of the properties of signal and background decays in particle physics analyses. Based upon the TGenPhaseSpace class from the ROOT application it uses externally provided fixed-order next-to-leading-logarithm calculations to boost the initial beauty and charm hadrons to the appropriate energy for the production environment of interest. User-defined momentum resolution functions can be used to mimic the effect of imperfect track reconstruction. User-defined efficiency shapes can be applied during generation to reproduce the effects of geometric and kinematic requirements on final state particles as well as the dynamics of the decay. The effect of mis-identification of the final state particles is simple to configure via configuration files, while the framework can easily be extended to include additional particle types. This paper describes the RapidSim framework, features and some example use cases.

TITUS: the Tokai Intermediate Tank for the Unoscillated Spectrum

The TITUS, Tokai Intermediate Tank for Unoscillated Spectrum, detector, is a proposed Gd-doped Water Cherenkov tank with a magnetised muon range detector downstream. It is located at J-PARC at about 2 km from the neutrino target and it is proposed as a potential near detector for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. Assuming a beam power of 1.3 MW and 27.05 x 10^{21} protons-on-target the sensitivity to CP and mixing parameters achieved by Hyper-Kamiokande with TITUS as a near detector is presented. Also, the potential of the detector for cross sections and Standard Model parameter determination, supernova neutrino and dark matter are shown.

Exotic hadron spectroscopy at the LHCb experiment

The LHCb experiment is designed to study the decays and properties of heavy flavoured hadrons produced in the forward region from proton-proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. During Run 1, it has recorded the world's largest data sample of beauty and charm hadrons, enabling precise studies into the spectroscopy of such particles, including discoveries of new states and measurements of their masses, widths and quantum numbers. An overview of recent LHCb results in the area of exotic hadron spectroscopy is presented, focussing on the discovery of the first pentaquark states in the $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^-$ channel and a search for them in the related $Λ_b^0 \to J/ψpπ^-$ mode. The LHCb non-confirmation of the D0 tetraquark candidate in the $B_s^0π^+$ invariant mass spectrum is presented.

Roadmap for selected key measurements of LHCb

Six of the key physics measurements that will be made by the LHCb experiment, concerning CP asymmetries and rare B decays, are discussed in detail. The "road map" towards the precision measurements is presented, including the use of control channels and other techniques to understand the performance of the detector with the first data from the LHC.
