Two-component mixture of charged particles confined in a channel: melting

The melting of a binary system of charged particles confined in a {\it quasi}-one-dimensional parabolic channel is studied through Monte Carlo simulations. At zero temperature the particles are ordered in parallel chains. The melting is anisotropic and different melting temperatures are obtained according to the spatial direction, and the different types of particles present in the system. Melting is very different for the single-, two- and four-chain configurations. A temperature induced structural phase transition is found between two different four chain ordered states which is absent in the mono-disperse system. In the mixed regime, where the two types of particles are only slightly different, melting is almost isotropic and a thermally induced homogeneous distribution of the distinct types of charges is observed.

Structural and dynamical properties of a quasi-one-dimensional classical binary system

The ground state configurations and the \lq{}\lq{}normal\rq{}\rq{} mode spectra of a $quasi$-one-dimensional (Q1D) binary system of charged particles interacting through a screened Coulomb potential are presented. The minimum energy configurations were obtained analytically and independently through molecular dynamic simulations. A rich variety of ordered structures were found as a function of the screening parameter, the particle density, and the ratio between the charges of the distinct types of particles. Continuous and discontinuous structural transitions, as well as an unexpected symmetry breaking in the charge distribution are observed when the density of the system is changed. For near equal charges we found a disordered phase where a mixing of the two types of particles occurs. The phonon dispersion curves were calculated within the harmonic approximation for the one- and two-chain structures.

(Giant) Vortex - (anti) vortex interaction in bulk superconductors: The Ginzburg-Landau theory

The vortex-vortex interaction potential in bulk superconductors is calculated within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and is obtained from a numerical solution of a set of two coupled non-linear GL differential equations for the vector potential and the superconducting order parameter, where the merger of vortices into a giant vortex is allowed. Further, the interaction potentials between a vortex and a giant vortex and between a vortex and an antivortex are obtained for both type-I and type-II superconductors. Our numerical results agree asymptotically with the analytical expressions for large inter-vortex separations which are available in the literature. We propose new empirical expressions valid over the full interaction range, which are fitted to our numerical data for different values of the GL parameter.

Topological confinement in graphene bilayer quantum rings

We demonstrate the existence of localized electron and hole states in a ring-shaped potential kink in biased bilayer graphene. Within the continuum description, we show that for sharp potential steps the Dirac equation describing carrier states close to the K (or K') point of the first Brillouin zone can be solved analytically for a circular kink/anti-kink dot. The solutions exhibit interfacial states which exhibit Aharonov-Bohm oscillations as functions of the height of the potential step and/or the radius of the ring.

Simplified model for the energy levels of quantum rings in single layer and bilayer graphene

Within a minimal model, we present analytical expressions for the eigenstates and eigenvalues of carriers confined in quantum rings in monolayer and bilayer graphene. The calculations were performed in the context of the continuum model, by solving the Dirac equation for a zero width ring geometry, i.e. by freezing out the carrier radial motion. We include the effect of an external magnetic field and show the appearance of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and of a non-zero gap in the spectrum. Our minimal model gives insight in the energy spectrum of graphene-based quantum rings and models different aspects of finite width rings.

Electrostatically confined Quantum Rings in bilayer Graphene

We propose a new system where electron and hole states are electrostatically confined into a quantum ring in bilayer graphene. These structures can be created by tuning the gap of the graphene bilayer using nanostructured gates or by position-dependent doping. The energy levels have a magnetic field ($B_{0}$) dependence that is strikingly distinct from that of usual semiconductor quantum rings. In particular, the eigenvalues are not invariant under a $B_0 \to -B_0$ transformation and, for a fixed total angular momentum index $m$, their field dependence is not parabolic, but displays two minima separated by a saddle point. The spectra also display several anti-crossings, which arise due to the overlap of gate-confined and magnetically-confined states.

Hysteresis and re-entrant melting of a self-organized system of classical particles confined in a parabolic trap

A self-organized system composed of classical particles confined in a two-dimensional parabolic trap and interacting through a potential with a short-range attractive part and long-range repulsive part is studied as function of temperature. The influence of the competition between the short-range attractive part of the inter-particle potential and its long-range repulsive part on the melting temperature is studied. Different behaviors of the melting temperature are found depending on the screening length ($κ$) and the strength ($B$) of the attractive part of the inter-particle potential. A re-entrant behavior and a thermal induced phase transition is observed in a small region of ($κ,B$)-space. A structural hysteresis effect is observed as a function of temperature and physically understood as due to the presence of a potential barrier between different configurations of the system.

Transport properties of a 2DEG in the presence of a tilted magnetic field

The effect of a tilted dc magnetic field on the transport properties of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is studied. The influence of the component of magnetic field parallel to the surface is analyzed and the dependence of the Fermi energy on the intensity and direction of the external field is discussed. Numerical results are obtained for the Hall conductivity considering values of electronic densities and strength of the dc magnetic field that are currently obtained in many laboratories

Surface Plasmons on a Quasiperiodic Grating

A method is presented for calculating the frequencies of non-retarded surface plasmons propagating on a semi-inifinite medium with a surface profile described by a one-dimension quasiperiodic function. The profiles are generated, in analogy with previous work on quasiperiodic superlattices, by repeating unitary cells constructed according to an inflation rule. Dispersion relations are obtained for a semi-infinite free-electron metal as the active medium, with surface profiles obeying the Fibonacci and Thue-Morse sequences.

Structure and correlations in two-dimensional Coulomb confined classical artificial atoms

The ordering of N equally charged particles (-e) moving in two dimensions and confined by a Coulomb potential, resulting from a displaced positive charge Ze is discussed. This is a classical model system for atoms. We obtain the configurations of the charged particles which, depending on the value of N and Z, may result in ring structures, hexagonal-type configurations and for N/Z~1 in an inner structure of particles which is separated by an outer ring of particles. For N/Z<<1 the Hamiltonian of the parabolic confinement case is recovered. For N/Z~1 the configurations are very different from those found in the case of a parabolic confinement potential. A hydrodynamic analysis is presented in order to highlight the correlations effects.

Structural Transitions in a Classical Two-Dimensional Molecule System

The ground state of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system with finite number of charged particles, trapped by two positive impurities charges localized at a distance (zo) from the 2D plane and separated from each other by a distance xp are obtained. The impurities are allowed to carry more than one positive charge. This classical system can form a 2D-like classical molecule that exhibits structural transitions and spontaneous symmetry breaking as a function of the separation between the positive charges before it transforms into two independent 2D-like classical atoms. We also observe structural transitions as a function of the dielectric constant of the substrate which supports the charged particles, in addition to broken symmetry states and unbinding of particles.

An extended-phase-space dynamics for the generalized nonextensive thermostatistics

We apply a variant of the Nose-Hoover thermostat to derive the Hamiltonian of a nonextensive system that is compatible with the canonical ensemble of the generalized thermostatistics of Tsallis. This microdynamical approach provides a deterministic connection between the generalized nonextensive entropy and power law behavior. For the case of a simple one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, we confirm by numerical simulation of the dynamics that the distribution of energy H follows precisely the canonical q-statistics for different values of the parameter q. The approach is further tested for classical many-particle systems by means of molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the intrinsic nonlinear features of the nonextensive formalism are capable to generate energy fluctuations that obey anomalous probability laws. For q<1 a broad distribution of energy is observed, while for q>1 the resulting distribution is confined to a compact support.

Polaron effects in electron channels on a helium film

Using the Feynman path-integral formalism we study the polaron effects in quantum wires above a liquid helium film. The electron interacts with two-dimensional (2D) surface phonons, i.e. ripplons, and is confined in one dimension (1D) by an harmonic potential. The obtained results are valid for arbitrary temperature ($T$), electron-phonon coupling strength ($α$), and lateral confinement ($ω_{0}$). Analytical and numerical results are obtained for limiting cases of $T$, $α$, and $ω_{0}$. We found the surprising result that reducing the electron motion from 2D to quasi-1D makes the self-trapping transition more continuous.

Exciton trapping in magnetic wire structures

The lateral magnetic confinement of quasi two-dimensional excitons into wire like structures is studied. Spin effects are take into account and two different magnetic field profiles are considered, which experimentally can be created by the deposition of a ferromagnetic stripe on a semiconductor quantum well with magnetization parallel or perpendicular to the grown direction of the well. We find that it is possible to confine excitons into one-dimensional (1D) traps. We show that the dependence of the confinement energy on the exciton wave vector, which is related to its free direction of motion along the wire direction, is very small. Through the application of a background magnetic field it is possible to move the position of the trapping region towards the edge of the ferromagnetic stripe or even underneath the stripe. The exact position of this 1D exciton channel depends on the strength of the background magnetic field and on the magnetic polarisation direction of the ferromagnetic film.

Microscopic Theory of Dipole-Exchange Spin Waves in Ferromagnetic Films: Linear and Nonlinear Processes

The linear and nonlinear processes in ferromagnetic films at low temperatures T<< Tc are studied in a microscopic theory. Both the long-range magnetic dipole-dipole and the Heisenberg exchange interactions to nearest and next-nearest neighbors are included. The results obtained for the linearized spin-wave spectrum are compared with previous macroscopic theories. For ultrathin films (or for large wave vectors) the microscopic theory provides important corrections. The nonlinear dynamics of the spin waves are studied through a finite-temperature perturbation theory based on Feynman diagrams. We obtain explicit results for the energy shift and damping (or reciprocal lifetime) of the dipole-exchange spin waves due to all possible three-magnon and four-magnon processes involving combinations of the surface and quantized bulk spin waves at low temperatures. To investigate different dipole interaction strengths (relative to the exchange) numerical results are presented using parameters for Fe, EuO, and GdCl3.

Fine structure of excitons in a quantum well in the presence of a nonhomogeneous magnetic field

The trapping of excitons in a semiconductor quantum well due to a circular symmetric nonhomogeneous magnetic field is studied. The effect of the spin state of the exciton on its trapping energy is analyzed, and the importance of the interaction of the orbital and spin Zeeman effect as compared to the diamagnetic term in the exciton Hamiltonian is emphasized. Magnetic field profiles are considered, which can experimentally be created through the deposition of ferromagnetic disks on top of a semiconductor heterostructure. This setup gives rise to a magnetic dipole type of profile in the $xy$ plane of the exciton motion. We find that the spin direction of the exciton influences its localization by changing the confinement region in the effective potential. The exciton confinement increases with magnetic field intensity, and this is more pronounced when the exciton g-factor is different from zero. The numerical calculations are performed for GaAs/Al$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As quantum wells and we show that it open up a new realistic path for experiments designed to probe exciton trapping in semiconductors.

Confinement of two-dimensional excitons in a non-homogeneous magnetic field

The effective Hamiltonian describing the motion of an exciton in an external non-homogeneous magnetic field is derived. The magnetic field plays the role of an effective potential for the exciton motion, results into an increment of the exciton mass and modifies the exciton kinetic energy operator. In contrast to the homogeneous field case, the exciton in a non-homogeneous magnetic field can also be trapped in the low field region and the field gradient increases the exciton confinement. The trapping energy and wave function of the exciton in a GaAs two-dimensional electron gas for specific circular magnetic field configurations are calculated. The results show than excitons can be trapped by non-homogeneous magnetic fields, and that the trapping energy is strongly correlated with the shape and strength of the non-homogeneous magnetic field profile.
