E(5), X(5), and Prolate to Oblate Shape Phase Transitions in Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov Theory

Relativistic mean field theory with the NL3 force is used for producing potential energy surfaces (PES) for series of isotopes suggested as exhibiting critical point symmetries. Relatively flat PES are obtained for nuclei showing the E(5) symmetry, while in nuclei corresponding to the X(5) case, PES with a bump are obtained. The PES corresponding to the Pt chain of isotopes suggest a transition from prolate to oblate shapes at 186-Pt.

Ground state properties of rare-earth nuclei in the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings

The relativistic mean-field effective interaction with density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings DD-ME1 is tested in the calculation of deformed nuclei. Ground-state properties of six isotopic chains ($60\le Z \le 70$) in the region of rare-earth nuclei are calculated by using the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model with the DD-ME1 mean-field interaction, and with the Gogny D1S force for the pairing interaction. Results of fully self-consistent RHB calculations for the total binding energies, charge isotope shifts and quadrupole deformation parameters are compared with the available empirical data.

Probing the gateway to superheavy nuclei in cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory

The cranked relativistic Hartree+Bogoliubov theory has been applied for a systematic study of the nuclei around 254No, the heaviest nuclei for which detailed spectroscopic data are available. The deformation, rotational response, pairing correlations, quasi-particle and other properties of these nuclei have been studied with different relativistic mean field (RMF) parametrizations. For the first time, the quasi-particle spectra of odd deformed nuclei have been calculated in a fully self-consistent way within the framework of the RMF theory. The energies of the spherical subshells, from which active deformed states of these nuclei emerge, are described with an accuracy better than 0.5 MeV for most of the subshells with the NL1 and NL3 parametrizations. However, for a few subshells the discrepancy reach 0.7-1.0 MeV. The implications of these results for the study of superheavy nuclei are discussed.

Cranked Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov Theory: probing the gateway to superheavy nuclei

The cranked relativistic Hartree+Bogoliubov theory has been applied for a systematic study of the nuclei around 254No, the heaviest elements for which detailed spectroscopic data are available. The deformation, rotational response, pairing correlations, quasi-particle and other properties of these nuclei have been studied with different parametrizations for the effective mean-field Lagrangian. Pairing correlations are taken into account by a finite range two-body force of Gogny type. While the deformation properties are well reproduced, the calculations reveal some deficiencies of the effective forces both in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. For the first time, the quasi-particle spectra of odd deformed nuclei have been calculated in a fully self-consistent way within the framework of the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. The energies of the spherical subshells, from which active deformed states of these nuclei emerge, are described with an accuracy better than 0.5 MeV for most of the subshells with the NL1 and NL3 parametrizations. However, for a few subshells the discrepancies reach 0.7-1.0 MeV. In very heavy systems, where the level density is high, this level of accuracy is not sufficient for reliable predictions of the location of relatively small deformed shell gaps. The calculated moments of inertia reveal only small sensitivity to the RMF parametrization and, thus, to differences in the single-particle structure. However, in contrast to lighter systems, it is necessary to decrease the strength of the D1S Gogny force in the pairing channel in order to reproduce the moments of inertia.

Shape Coexistence in the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov approach

The phenomenon of shape coexistence is studied in the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov framework. Standard relativistic mean-field effective interactions do not reproduce the ground state properties of neutron-deficient Pt-Hg-Pb isotopes. It is shown that, in order to consistently describe binding energies, radii and ground state deformations of these nuclei, effective interactions have to be constructed which take into account the sizes of spherical shell gaps.

The Z=82 shell closure in neutron-deficient Pb isotopes

Recent mass measurements show a substantial weakening of the binding energy difference delta_{2p} (Z,N) = E(Z-2,N) - 2 E(Z,N) + E(Z+2,N) in the neutron-deficient Pb isotopes. As delta_{2p} is often attributed to the size of the proton magic gap, it might be speculated that the reduction in delta_{2p} is related to a weakening of the spherical Z=82 shell. We demonstrate that the observed trend is described quantitatively by self-consistent mean-field models in terms of deformed ground states of Hg and Po isotopes.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov description of deformed light nuclei

The Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model is applied in the analysis of ground-state properties of Be, B, C, N, F, Ne and Na isotopes. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Neutron separation energies, quadrupole deformations, nuclear matter radii, and differences in radii of proton and neutron distributions are compared with recent experimental data.

Global Lifetime Measurements of Highly-Deformed and Other Rotational Structures in the A~135 Light Rare-Earth Region: Probing the Single-Particle Motion in a Rotating Potential

It has been possible, using GAMMASPHERE plus Microball,to extract differential lifetime measurements free from common systematic errors for over 15 different nuclei (various isotopes of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, and Sm) at high spin within a single experiment. This comprehensive study establishes the effective single-particle quadrupole moments in the A~135 light rare-earth region. Detailed comparisons are made with calculations using the self-consistent cranked mean-field theory.

Collectivity of the low-lying dipole strength in relativistic random phase approximation

The relativistic random phase approximation is applied in the analysis of the evolution of the isovector dipole response in nuclei with a large neutron excess. The self-consistent framework of relativistic mean-field theory, which has been very successfully applied in the description of ground-state properties of nuclei far from the valley of $β$-stability, is extended to study the possible onset of low-energy collective isovector dipole modes in nuclei with extreme isospin values.

Pygmy dipole resonances in relativistic random phase approximation

The isovector dipole response in $^{208}$Pb is described in the framework of a fully self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation. The NL3 parameter set for the effective mean-field Lagrangian with nonlinear meson self-interaction terms, used in the present calculations, reproduces ground state properties as well as the excitation energies of giant resonances in nuclei. In addition to the isovector dipole resonance in $^{208}$Pb, the present analysis predicts the occurrence of low-lying E1 peaks in the energy region between 7 and 11 MeV. In particular, a collective state has been identified whose dynamics correspond to that of a dipole pygmy resonance: the vibration of the excess neutrons against the inert core composed of equal number of protons and neutrons.

Mapping the proton drip line from Z=31 to Z=49

The structure of proton drip line nuclei in the 60 < A < 100 mass range is studied with the Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) model. For the elements which determine the astrophysical rapid proton capture process path, the RHB model predicts the location of the proton drip-line, the ground-state quadrupole deformations and one-proton separation energies at and beyond the drip-line. The results of the present theoretical investigation are compared with available experimental data. For possible odd-Z ground state proton emitters, the calculated deformed single-particle orbitals occupied by the odd valence proton and the corresponding spectroscopic factors are compared with predictions of the macroscopic-microscopic mass model.

Neutron density distributions for atomic parity nonconservation experiments

The neutron distributions of Cs, Ba, Yb and Pb isotopes are described in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. The self-consistent ground state proton and neutron density distributions are calculated with the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model. The binding energies, the proton and neutron radii, and the quadrupole deformations are compared with available experimental data, as well as with recent theoretical studies of the nuclear structure corrections to the weak charge in atomic parity nonconservation experiments.

Nuclear Skins and Halos in the Mean-Field Theory

Nuclei with large neutron-to-proton ratios have neutron skins, which manifest themselves in an excess of neutrons at distances greater than the radius of the proton distribution. In addition, some drip-line nuclei develop very extended halo structures. The neutron halo is a threshold effect; it appears when the valence neutrons occupy weakly bound orbits. In this study, nuclear skins and halos are analyzed within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theories for spherical shapes. It is demonstrated that skins, halos, and surface thickness can be analyzed in a model-independent way in terms of nucleonic density form factors. Such an analysis allows for defining a quantitative measure of the halo size. The systematic behavior of skins, halos, and surface thickness in even-even nuclei is discussed.

Parity violating elastic electron scattering and neutron density distributions in the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model

Parity violating elastic electron scattering on neutron-rich nuclei is described in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. Self-consistent ground state density distributions of Ne, Na, Ni and Sn isotopes are calculated with the relativistic Hartree- Bogoliubov model, and the resulting neutron radii are compared with available experimental data. For the elastic scattering of 850 MeV electrons on these nuclei, the parity-violating asymmetry parameters are calculated using a relativistic optical model with inclusion of Coulomb distortion effects. The asymmetry parameters for chains of isotopes are compared, and their relation to the Fourier transforms of neutron densities is studied. It is shown that parity-violating asymmetries are sensitive not only to the formation of the neutron skin, but also to the shell effects of the neutron density distribution.

Single Particle and Collective Structure for Nuclei near Sn-132

A new Nilsson single-particle structure is proposed for neutron-rich nuclei near $^{132}$Sn. In general, a large reduction in spin-orbit interaction is required and the neutron $N = 82$ gap persists in the new set of parameters. The ground state deformations for several isotopic chains are studied with this set and compared with the results of the standard set and with measured ones. Collective bands in two even-even, neutron-rich nuclei are calculated using the Projected Shell Model with the new set of parameters and improved agreement with existing data is found.
