Magnetoelastic coupling at the field-induced transition in EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$

Magnetoelastic coupling plays a crucial role in magnetic-field-induced transitions in anisotropic ferromagnets. Ultrasonic methods are suitable for experimental investigations of these phenomena. We investigate elastic constants in EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$, a quasi-two-dimensional anisotropic ferromagnet, by measuring sound velocity in magnetic fields perpendicular to spontaneous magnetization. The shear modulus $C_{44}$ exhibits dramatic softening at the field-induced transition from the ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic phase with magnetic moments forced to polarize along the applied transverse field. The softening is attributed to strong magnetic fluctuations near a second-order phase transition. Theoretical calculations based on magnetization data qualitatively reproduced the observed behavior within a strain-exchange mechanism. These results demonstrate that magnetoelastic coupling in EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$ arises primarily from exchange striction and provide a framework for modeling similar transitions in other anisotropic ferromagnets.

Study of magnetoelastic interaction in MnF$_2$ by the acoustoelectric transformation method

The mechanisms of magnetoelastic interaction in MnF$_2$ are studied using the method of acoustoelectric transformation. The temperature dependence of the piezomagnetic coupling coefficient and its anisotropy are determined in the antiferromagnetic phase. We observe a new effect consisting in the appearance of a non-diagonal component of the magnetic susceptibility tensor, which is proportional to the square of the order parameter, under the action of the shear wave. A phenomenological interpretation of the effect, which takes into account a small-angle rotation of the crystal lattice, is presented. In the paramagnetic state, the effect of acoustic deformation is reduced to the modulation of the diagonal component of the susceptibility tensor.

Piezomagnetism of FeSe single crystals

The acoustic-electric transformation in high-quality FeSe single crystals is studied. In zero magnetic field we observe an abnormally strong electromagnetic radiation induced by a transverse elastic wave. Usually a radiation of such intensity and polarization is observed only in metals subjected to a high magnetic field (the radiation is caused by the Hall current). We argue that in FeSe in zero magnetic field it is caused by the piezomagnetic effect which is most probably of dynamical origin. We find that the piezomagnetism survives under the transition from the normal to superconducting state. In the superconducting state the electromagnetic signal decreases with decreasing temperature that is connected with the change in the London penetration depth.

Acoustic characteristics of FeSe single crystals Acoustic characteristics of FeSe single crystals

The results of the comprehensive ultrasonic research of high quality single crystals of FeSe are presented. Absolute values of sound velocities and their temperature dependences were measured; elastic constants and Debye temperature were calculated. The elastic C11-C12 and C11 constants undergo significant softening under the structural tetra-ortho transformation. The significant influence of the superconducting transition on the velocity and attenuation of sound was revealed and the value of the superconducting energy gap was estimated.

Magnetic Phase Transitions in the NdFe_3(BO_3)_4 multiferroic

Low temperature studies of the behavior of the sound velocity and attenuation of acoustic modes have been performed on a single crystal NdFe_3(BO_3)_4. Transitions of the magnetic subsystem to the antiferromagnetically ordered state at T_N \approx 30.6 K have been revealed in the temperature behavior of the elastic characteristics. The features in the temperature behavior of elastic characteristics of the neodymium ferroborate and its behavior in the external magnetic field, applied in the basic plane of the crystal, permit us to suppose that the transition to an incommensurate spiral phase is realized in the system. This phase transition behaves as the first order one. H-T phase diagrams for the cases H \parallel a and H \parallel b have been constructed. The phenomenological theory, which explains observed features, has been developed.

Influence of magnetic field on paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($x\approx 0.25$) crystal: ultrasonic and transport studies

The ultrasonic properties of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($x\approx 0.25$) with the Curie temperature $T_C$ about 200 K are studied. Temperature dependences of longitudinal and transverse sound velocities were measured in zero magnetic field and for different constant magnetic fields as well. The ultrasonic study is supported by magnetic, resistive, magnetoresistive, structural and other measurements of the sample that facilitate interpretation of the results obtained. The magnetic field influence on sound properties found in this study presents some new features of the interplay between the elastic and magnetic properties of these compounds. It is shown that the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in the sample studied is first order, but can become second order under the influence of applied magnetic field.

MgB2: synthesis, sound velocity, and dynamics of the vortex phase

The sound velocity is measured in polycrystalline MgB2 synthesized from the elements, and the bulk modulus and the Debye temperature are calculated. The conversion of an elastic wave into electromagnetic radiation is investigated in the mixed state. The dynamic parameters of the vortex lattice are estimated. This paper was published in Low Temp.
