Characteristic polynomials in real Ginibre ensembles

We calculate the average of two characteristic polynomials for the real Ginibre ensemble of asymmetric random matrices, and its chiral counterpart. Considered as quadratic forms they determine a skew-symmetric kernel from which all complex eigenvalue correlations can be derived. Our results are obtained in a very simple fashion without going to an eigenvalue representation, and are completely new in the chiral case. They hold for Gaussian ensembles which are partly symmetric, with kernels given in terms of Hermite and Laguerre polynomials respectively, depending on an asymmetry parameter. This allows us to interpolate between the maximally asymmetric real Ginibre and the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble, as well as their chiral counterparts.

The chiral Gaussian two-matrix ensemble of real asymmetric matrices

We solve a family of Gaussian two-matrix models with rectangular Nx(N+v) matrices, having real asymmetric matrix elements and depending on a non-Hermiticity parameter mu. Our model can be thought of as the chiral extension of the real Ginibre ensemble, relevant for Dirac operators in the same symmetry class. It has the property that its eigenvalues are either real, purely imaginary, or come in complex conjugate eigenvalue pairs. The eigenvalue joint probability distribution for our model is explicitly computed, leading to a non-Gaussian distribution including K-Bessel functions. All n-point density correlation functions are expressed for finite N in terms of a Pfaffian form. This contains a kernel involving Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane as a building block which was previously computed by the authors. This kernel can be expressed in terms of the kernel for complex non-Hermitian matrices, generalising the known relation among ensembles of Hermitian random matrices. Compact expressions are given for the density at finite N as an example, as well as its microscopic large-N limits at the origin for fixed v at strong and weak non-Hermiticity.

A Wigner Surmise for Hermitian and Non-Hermitian Chiral Random Matrices

We use the idea of a Wigner surmise to compute approximate distributions of the first eigenvalue in chiral Random Matrix Theory, for both real and complex eigenvalues. Testing against known results for zero and maximal non-Hermiticity in the microscopic large-N limit we find an excellent agreement, valid for a small number of exact zero-eigenvalues. New compact expressions are derived for real eigenvalues in the orthogonal and symplectic classes, and at intermediate non-Hermiticity for the unitary and symplectic classes. Such individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions are a useful tool in Lattice Gauge Theory and we illustrate this by showing that our new results can describe data from two-colour QCD simulations with chemical potential in the symplectic class.

Superstatistical generalisations of Wishart-Laguerre ensembles of random matrices

Using Beck and Cohen's superstatistics, we introduce in a systematic way a family of generalised Wishart-Laguerre ensembles of random matrices with Dyson index $β$ = 1,2, and 4. The entries of the data matrix are Gaussian random variables whose variances $η$ fluctuate from one sample to another according to a certain probability density $f(η)$ and a single deformation parameter $γ$. Three superstatistical classes for $f(η)$ are usually considered: $χ^2$-, inverse $χ^2$- and log-normal-distributions. While the first class, already considered by two of the authors, leads to a power-law decay of the spectral density, we here introduce and solve exactly a superposition of Wishart-Laguerre ensembles with inverse $χ^2$-distribution. The corresponding macroscopic spectral density is given by a $γ$-deformation of the semi-circle and Marčenko-Pastur laws, on a non-compact support with exponential tails. After discussing in detail the validity of Wigner's surmise in the Wishart-Laguerre class, we introduce a generalised $γ$-dependent surmise with stretched-exponential tails, which well approximates the individual level spacing distribution in the bulk. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations. To illustrate our findings we compare the $χ^2$- and inverse $χ^2$-class to empirical data from financial covariance matrices.

Gap Probabilities in Non-Hermitian Random Matrix Theory

We compute the gap probability that a circle of radius r around the origin contains exactly k complex eigenvalues. Four different ensembles of random matrices are considered: the Ginibre ensembles and their chiral complex counterparts, with both complex (beta=2) or quaternion real (beta=4) matrix elements. For general non-Gaussian weights we give a Fredholm determinant or Pfaffian representation respectively, depending on the non-Hermiticity parameter. At maximal non-Hermiticity, that is for rotationally invariant weights, the product of Fredholm eigenvalues for beta=4 follows from beta=2 by skipping every second factor, in contrast to the known relation for Hermitian ensembles. On additionally choosing Gaussian weights we give new explicit expressions for the Fredholm eigenvalues in the chiral case, in terms of Bessel-K and incomplete Bessel-I functions. This compares to known results for the Ginibre ensembles in terms of incomplete exponentials. Furthermore we present an asymptotic expansion of the logarithm of the gap probability for large argument r at large N in all four ensembles, up to including the third order linear term. We can provide strict upper and lower bounds and present numerical evidence for its conjectured values, depending on the number of exact zero eigenvalues in the chiral ensembles. For the Ginibre ensemble at beta=2 exact results were previously derived by Forrester.

Power-law deformation of Wishart-Laguerre ensembles of random matrices

We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the Wishart-Laguerre or chiral ensembles of positive definite random matrices with Dyson index beta=1,2 and 4. Our generalised model has a fat-tailed distribution while preserving the invariance under orthogonal, unitary or symplectic transformations. The spectral properties are derived analytically for finite matrix size NxM for all three beta, in terms of the orthogonal polynomials of the standard Wishart-Laguerre ensembles. For large-N in a certain double scaling limit we obtain a generalised Marcenko-Pastur distribution on the macroscopic scale, and a generalised Bessel-law at the hard edge which is shown to be universal. Both macroscopic and microscopic correlations exhibit power-law tails, where the microscopic limit depends on beta and the difference M-N. In the limit where our parameter governing the power-law goes to infinity we recover the correlations of the Wishart-Laguerre ensembles. To illustrate these findings the generalised Marcenko-Pastur distribution is shown to be in very good agreement with empirical data from financial covariance matrices.

Finite size scaling of meson propagators with isospin chemical potential

We determine the volume and mass dependence of scalar and pseudoscalar two-point functions in N_f-flavour QCD, in the presence of an isospin chemical potential and at fixed gauge-field topology. We obtain these results at second order in the ε-expansion of Chiral Perturbation Theory and evaluate all relevant zero-mode group integrals analytically. The virtue of working with a non-vanishing chemical potential is that it provides the correlation functions with a dependence on both the chiral condensate, Σ, and the pion decay constant, F, already at leading order. Our results may therefore be useful for improving the determination of these constants from lattice QCD calculations. As a side product, we rectify an earlier calculation of the O(ε^2) finite-volume correction to the decay constant appearing in the partition function. We also compute a generalised partition function which is useful for evaluating U(N_f) group integrals.

A new Chiral Two-Matrix Theory for Dirac Spectra with Imaginary Chemical Potential

We solve a new chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory by means of biorthogonal polynomials for any matrix size $N$. By deriving the relevant kernels we find explicit formulas for all $(n,k)$-point spectral (mixed or unmixed) correlation functions. In the microscopic limit we find the corresponding scaling functions, and thus derive all spectral correlators in this limit as well. We extend these results to the ordinary (non-chiral) ensembles, and also there provide explicit solutions for any finite size $N$, and in the microscopic scaling limit. Our results give the general analytical expressions for the microscopic correlation functions of the Dirac operator eigenvalues in theories with imaginary baryon and isospin chemical potential, and can be used to extract the tree-level pion decay constant from lattice gauge theory configurations. We find exact agreement with previous computations based on the low-energy effective field theory in the two special cases where comparisons are possible.

Individual Eigenvalue Distributions of Chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory and the Determination of F_pi

Dirac operator eigenvalues split into two when subjected to two different external vector sources. In a specific finite-volume scaling regime of gauge theories with fermions, this problem can be mapped to a chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory. We derive analytical expressions to leading order in the associated finite-volume expansion, showing how individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions and their correlations equivalently can be computed directly from the effective chiral Lagrangian in the epsilon-regime. Because of its equivalence to chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory, we use the latter for all explicit computations. On the mathematical side, we define and determine gap probabilities and individual eigenvalue distributions in that theory at finite N, and also derive the relevant scaling limit as N is taken to infinity. In particular, the gap probability for one Dirac eigenvalue is given in terms of a new kernel that depends on the external vector source. This expression may give a new and simple way of determining the pion decay constant F_pi from lattice gauge theory simulations.

Individual complex Dirac eigenvalue distributions from random matrix theory and comparison to quenched lattice QCD with a quark chemical potential

We analyze how individual eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator at nonzero quark chemical potential are distributed in the complex plane. Exact and approximate analytical results for both quenched and unquenched distributions are derived from non-Hermitian random matrix theory. When comparing these to quenched lattice QCD spectra close to the origin, excellent agreement is found for zero and nonzero topology at several values of the quark chemical potential. Our analytical results are also applicable to other physical systems in the same symmetry class.

Chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory and QCD with imaginary chemical potential

We summarise recent results for the chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory constructed to describe QCD in the epsilon-regime with imaginary chemical potential. The virtue of this theory is that unquenched Lattice simulations can be used to determine both low energy constants Sigma and F in the leading order chiral Lagrangian, due to their respective coupling to quark mass and chemical potential. We briefly recall the analytic formulas for all density and individual eigenvalue correlations and then illustrate them in detail in the simplest, quenched case with imaginary isospin chemical potential. Some peculiarities are pointed out for this example: i) the factorisation of density and individual eigenvalue correlation functions for large chemical potential and ii) the factorisation of the non-Gaussian weight function of bi-orthogonal polynomials into Gaussian weights with ordinary orthogonal polynomials.

Determination of F_pi from Distributions of Dirac Operator Eigenvalues with Imaginary Density

In the epsilon-regime of lattice QCD one can get an accurate measurement of the pion decay constant F_pi by monitoring how just one single Dirac operator eigenvalue splits into two when subjected to two different external vector sources. Because we choose imaginary chemical potentials our Dirac eigenvalues remain real. Based on the relevant chiral Random Two-Matrix Theory we derive individual eigenvalue distributions in terms of density correlations functions to leading order in the finite-volume epsilon-expansion. As a simple byproduct we also show how the associated individual Dirac eigenvalue distributions and their correlations can be computed directly from the effective chiral Lagrangian.

Massive partition functions and complex eigenvalue correlations in Matrix Models with symplectic symmetry

We compute all massive partition functions or characteristic polynomials and their complex eigenvalue correlation functions for non-Hermitean extensions of the symplectic and chiral symplectic ensemble of random matrices. Our results are valid for general weight functions without degeneracies of the mass parameters. The expressions we derive are given in terms of the Pfaffian of skew orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane and their kernel. They are much simpler than the corresponding expressions for symplectic matrix models with real eigenvalues, and we explicitly show how to recover these in the Hermitean limit. This explains the appearance of three different kernels as quaternion matrix elements there in terms of derivatives of a single kernel here. We compare to the Hermitean limit of complex matrix models with unitary symmetry leading to some determinantal identities.

Matrix Models and QCD with Chemical Potential

The Random Matrix Model approach to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with non-vanishing chemical potential is reviewed. The general concept using global symmetries is introduced, as well as its relation to field theory, the so-called epsilon regime of chiral Perturbation Theory (echPT). Two types of Matrix Model results are distinguished: phenomenological applications leading to phase diagrams, and an exact limit of the QCD Dirac operator spectrum matching with echPT. All known analytic results for the spectrum of complex and symplectic Matrix Models with chemical potential are summarised for the symmetry classes of ordinary and adjoint QCD, respectively. These include correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues in the complex plane for real chemical potential, and in the real plane for imaginary isospin chemical potential. Comparisons of these predictions to recent Lattice simulations are also discussed.

Unquenched complex Dirac spectra at nonzero chemical potential: two-colour QCD lattice data versus matrix model

We compare analytic predictions of non-Hermitian chiral random matrix theory with the complex Dirac operator eigenvalue spectrum of two-colour lattice gauge theory with dynamical fermions at nonzero chemical potential. The Dirac eigenvalues come in complex conjugate pairs, making the action of this theory real, and positive for our choice of two staggered flavours. This enables us to use standard Monte-Carlo in testing the influence of chemical potential and quark mass on complex eigenvalues close to the origin. We find an excellent agreement between the analytic predictions and our data for two different volumes over a range of chemical potentials below the chiral phase transition. In particular we detect the effect of unquenching when going to very small quark masses.

QCD Dirac operator at nonzero chemical potential: lattice data and matrix model

Recently, a non-Hermitian chiral random matrix model was proposed to describe the eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator at nonzero chemical potential. This matrix model can be constructed from QCD by mapping it to an equivalent matrix model which has the same symmetries as QCD with chemical potential. Its microscopic spectral correlations are conjectured to be identical to those of the QCD Dirac operator. We investigate this conjecture by comparing large ensembles of Dirac eigenvalues in quenched SU(3) lattice QCD at nonzero chemical potential to the analytical predictions of the matrix model. Excellent agreement is found in the two regimes of weak and strong non-Hermiticity, for several different lattice volumes.

The Complex Laguerre Symplectic Ensemble of Non-Hermitian Matrices

We solve the complex extension of the chiral Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble, defined as a Gaussian two-matrix model of chiral non-Hermitian quaternion real matrices. This leads to the appearance of Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane and we prove their orthogonality. Alternatively, a complex eigenvalue representation of this ensemble is given for general weight functions. All k-point correlation functions of complex eigenvalues are given in terms of the corresponding skew orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane for finite-N, where N is the matrix size or number of eigenvalues, respectively. We also allow for an arbitrary number of complex conjugate pairs of characteristic polynomials in the weight function, corresponding to massive quark flavours in applications to field theory. Explicit expressions are given in the large-N limit at both weak and strong non-Hermiticity for the weight of the Gaussian two-matrix model. This model can be mapped to the complex Dirac operator spectrum with non-vanishing chemical potential. It belongs to the symmetry class of either the adjoint representation or two colours in the fundamental representation using staggered lattice fermions.

Unquenched QCD Dirac Operator Spectra at Nonzero Baryon Chemical Potential

The microscopic spectral density of the QCD Dirac operator at nonzero baryon chemical potential for an arbitrary number of quark flavors was derived recently from a random matrix model with the global symmetries of QCD. In this paper we show that these results and extensions thereof can be obtained from the replica limit of a Toda lattice equation. This naturally leads to a factorized form into bosonic and fermionic QCD-like partition functions. In the microscopic limit these partition functions are given by the static limit of a chiral Lagrangian that follows from the symmetry breaking pattern. In particular, we elucidate the role of the singularity of the bosonic partition function in the orthogonal polynomials approach. A detailed discussion of the spectral density for one and two flavors is given.
