Magnetic Exchange Interactions in the Molecular Nanomagnet Mn$_{12}$

The discovery of magnetic bistability in Mn$_{12}$ more than 20 years ago marked the birth of molecular magnetism, an extremely fertile interdisciplinary field and a powerful route to create tailored magnetic nanostructures. However, the difficulty to determine interactions in complex polycentric molecules often prevents their understanding. Mn$_{12}$ is an outstanding example of this difficulty: although it is the forefather and most studied of all molecular nanomagnets, an unambiguous determination of even the leading magnetic exchange interactions is still lacking. Here we exploit four-dimensional inelastic neutron scattering to portray how individual spins fluctuate around the magnetic ground state, thus fixing the exchange couplings of Mn$_{12}$ for the first time. Our results demonstrate the power of four-dimensional inelastic neutron scattering as an unrivaled tool to characterize magnetic clusters.

Multipolar, magnetic and vibrational lattice dynamics in the low temperature phase of uranium dioxide

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed with triple-axis spectrometers to investigate the low-temperature collective dynamics in the ordered phase of uranium dioxide. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of mean-field RPA calculations emphasizing the importance of multipolar superexchange interactions. By comparing neutron scattering intensities in different polarization channels and at equivalent points in different Brillouin zones, we show the mixed magneto-vibrational-quadrupolar character of the observed excitations. The high energy resolution afforded by the cold triple-axis spectrometer allowed us to study in detail the magnon-phonon interaction giving rise to avoided crossings along the $[00ξ]$ reciprocal space direction.

Quantum-Information Processing with Hybrid Spin-Photon Qubit Encoding

We introduce a scheme to perform quantum-information processing that is based on a hybrid spin-photon qubit encoding. The proposed qubits consist of spin-ensembles coherently coupled to microwave photons in coplanar waveguide resonators. The quantum gates are performed solely by shifting the resonance frequencies of the resonators on a ns timescale. An additional cavity containing a Cooper-pair box is exploited as an auxiliary degree of freedom to implement two-qubit gates. The generality of the scheme allows its potential implementation with a wide class of spin systems.

Many-body models for molecular nanomagnets

We present a flexible and effective ab-initio scheme to build many-body models for molecular nanomagnets, and to calculate magnetic exchange couplings and zero-field splittings. It is based on using localized Foster-Boys orbitals as one-electron basis. We apply this scheme to three paradigmatic systems, the antiferromagnetic rings Cr8 and Cr7Ni and the single molecule magnet Fe4. In all cases we identify the essential magnetic interactions and find excellent agreement with experiments.

Spin dynamics of molecular nanomagnets fully unraveled by four-dimensional inelastic neutron scattering

Molecular nanomagnets are among the first examples of spin systems of finite size and have been test-beds for addressing a range of elusive but important phenomena in quantum dynamics. In fact, for short-enough timescales the spin wavefunctions evolve coherently according to the an appropriate cluster spin-Hamiltonian, whose structure can be tailored at the synthetic level to meet specific requirements. Unfortunately, to this point it has been impossible to determine the spin dynamics directly. If the molecule is sufficiently simple, the spin motion can be indirectly assessed by an approximate model Hamiltonian fitted to experimental measurements of various types. Here we show that recently-developed instrumentation yields the four-dimensional inelastic-neutron scattering function S(Q,E) in vast portions of reciprocal space and enables the spin dynamics to be determined with no need of any model Hamiltonian. We exploit the Cr8 antiferromagnetic ring as a benchmark to demonstrate the potential of this new approach. For the first time we extract a model-free picture of the quantum dynamics of a molecular nanomagnet. This allows us, for example, to examine how a quantum fluctuation propagates along the ring and to directly test the degree of validity of the Néel-vector-tunneling description of the spin dynamics.

Molecular nanomagnets as quantum simulators

Quantum simulators are controllable systems that can be used to simulate other quantum systems. Here we focus on the dynamics of a chain of molecular qubits with interposed antiferromagnetic dimers. We theoretically show that its dynamics can be controlled by means of uniform magnetic pulses and used to mimic the evolution of other quantum systems, including fermionic ones. We propose two proof-of-principle experiments, based on the simulation of the Ising model in transverse field and of the quantum tunneling of the magnetization in a spin-1 system.

Inelastic neutron scattering and frequency domain magnetic resonance studies of S=4 and S=12 Mn$_6$ single-molecule magnets

We investigate the magnetic properties of three Mn$_6$ single molecule magnets by means of inelastic neutron scattering and frequency domain magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The experimental data reveal that small structural distortions of the molecular geometry produce a significant effect on the energy level diagram and therefore on the magnetic properties of the molecule. We show that the giant spin model completely fails to describe the spin level structure of the ground spin multiplets. We analyze theoretically the spin Hamiltonian for the low spin Mn$_6$ molecule (S=4) and we show that the excited $S$ multiplets play a key role in determining the effective energy barrier for the magnetization reversal, in analogy to what was previously found for the two high spin Mn6 (S=12) molecules [S. Carretta et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 157203 (2008)].

Magnetization and spin dynamics of a Cr-based magnetic cluster: Cr$_{7}$Ni

We study the magnetization and the spin dynamics of the Cr$_7$Ni ring-shaped magnetic cluster. Measurements of the magnetization at high pulsed fields and low temperature are compared to calculations and show that the spin Hamiltonian approach provides a good description of Cr$_7$Ni magnetic molecule. In addition, the phonon-induced relaxation dynamics of molecular observables has been investigated. By assuming the spin-phonon coupling to take place through the modulation of the local crystal fields, it is possible to evaluate the decay of fluctuations of two generic molecular observables. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ directly probes such fluctuations, and allows to determine the magnetoelastic coupling strength.

Neutron spectroscopy and magnetic relaxation of the Mn$_6$ nanomagnets

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to determine the microscopic Hamiltonian describing two high-spin variants of the high-anisotropy Mn$_6$ nanomagnet. The energy spectrum of both systems is characterized by the presence of several excited total-spin multiplets partially overlapping the S=12 ground multiplet. This implies that the relaxation processes of these molecules are different from those occurring in prototype giant-spin nanomagnets. In particular, we show that both the height of the energy barrier and resonant tunnelling processes are greatly influenced by low-lying excited total-spin multiplets.

Molecular engineering of antiferromagnetic rings for quantum computation

The substitution of one metal ion in a Cr-based molecular ring with dominant antiferromagnetic couplings allows to engineer its level structure and ground-state degeneracy. Here we characterize a Cr7Ni molecular ring by means of low-temperature specific-heat and torque-magnetometry measurements, thus determining the microscopic parameters of the corresponding spin Hamiltonian. The energy spectrum and the suppression of the leakage-inducing S-mixing render the Cr7Ni molecule a suitable candidate for the qubit implementation, as further substantiated by our quantum-gate simulations.

Quantum-gate implementation in permanently coupled AF spin rings without need of local fields

We propose a scheme for the implementation of quantum gates which is based on the qubit encoding in antiferromagnetic molecular rings. We show that a proper engineering of the intercluster link would result in an effective coupling that vanishes as far as the system is kept in the computational space, while it is turned on by a selective excitation of specific auxiliary states. These are also shown to allow the performing of single- and two-qubit gates without an individual addressing of the rings by means of local magnetic fields.

NMR as a probe of the relaxation of the magnetization in magnetic molecules

We investigate the time autocorrelation of the molecular magnetization $M(t)$ for three classes of magnetic molecules (antiferromagnetic rings, grids and nanomagnets), in contact with the phonon heat bath. For all three classes, we find that the exponential decay of the fluctuations of $M(t)$, associated with the irreversible exchange of energy with the heat bath, is characterized by a single characteristic time $τ(T,B)$ for not too high temperature $T$ and field $B$. This is reflected in a nearly single-lorentzian shape of the spectral density of the fluctuations. We show that such fluctuations are effectively probed by NMR, and that our theory explains the recent phenomenological observation by Baek et al. (PRB70, 134434) that the Larmor-frequency dependence of $1/T_1$ data in a large number of AFM rings fits to a single-lorentzian form.

Topology and spin dynamics in magnetic molecules

We investigate the role of topology and distortions in the quantum dynamics of magnetic molecules, using a cyclic spin system as reference. We consider three variants of antiferromagnetic molecular ring, i.e. Cr$_8$, Cr$_7$Zn and Cr$_7$Ni, characterized by low lying states with different total spin $S$. We theoretically and experimentally study the low-temperature behavior of the magnetic torque as a function of the applied magnetic field. Near level crossings, this observable selectively probes quantum fluctuations of the total spin (''$S$ mixing") induced by lowering of the ideal ring symmetry. We show that while a typical distortion of a model molecular structure is very ineffective in opening new $S$-mixing channels, the spin topology is a major ingredient to control the degree of $S$ mixing. This conclusion is further substantiated by low-temperature heat capacity measurements.

Spin dynamics of heterometallic Cr7M wheels (M = Mn, Zn, Ni) probed by inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering has been applied to the study of the spin dynamics of Cr-based antiferromagnetic octanuclear rings where a finite total spin of the ground state is obtained by substituting one Cr(III) ion (s = 3/2) with Zn (s = 0), Mn (s = 5/2) or Ni (s = 1) di-cations. Energy and intensity measurements for several intra-multiplet and inter-multiplet magnetic excitations allow us to determine the spin wavefunctions of the investigated clusters. Effects due to the mixing of different spin multiplets have been considered. Such effects proved to be important to correctly reproduce the energy and intensity of magnetic excitations in the neutron spectra. On the contrary to what is observed for the parent homonuclear Cr8 ring, the symmetry of the first excited spin states is such that anticrossing conditions with the ground state can be realized in the presence of an external magnetic field. Heterometallic Cr7M wheels are therefore good candidates for macroscopic observations of quantum effects.

A perturbative approach to J mixing in f-electron systems: Application to actinide dioxides

We present a perturbative model for crystal-field calculations, which keeps into account the possible mixing of states labelled by different quantum number J. Analytical J-mixing results are obtained for a Hamiltonian of cubic symmetry and used to interpret published experimental data for actinide dioxides. A unified picture for all the considered compounds is proposed by taking into account the scaling properties of the crystal-field potential.

Enhancement of rare-earth--transition-metal exchange interaction in Pr$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ probed by inelastic neutron scattering

The fundamental magnetic interactions of Pr$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ are studied by inelastic neutron scattering and anisotropy field measurements. Data analysis confirms the presence of three magnetically inequivalent sites, and reveals an exceptionally large value of the exchange field. The unexpected importance of $J$-mixing effects in the description of the ground-state properties of Pr$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ is evidenced, and possible applications of related compounds are envisaged.

S-mixing and quantum tunneling of the magnetization in molecular nanomagnets

The role of $S$-mixing in the quantum tunneling of the magnetization in nanomagnets has been investigated. We show that the effect on the tunneling frequency is huge and that the discrepancy (more than 3 orders of magnitude in the tunneling frequency) between spectroscopic and relaxation measurements in Fe$_8$ can be resolved if $S$-mixing is taken into account.

Quantum-magneto oscillations in a supramolecular Mn(II)-[3 x 3] grid

The magnetic grid molecule Mn(II)-[3 x 3] has been studied by high-field torque magnetometry at 3He temperatures. At fields above 5 T, the torque vs. field curves exhibit an unprecedented oscillatory behavior. A model is proposed which describes these magneto oscillations well.
