Expected Performance of the ATLAS Experiment - Detector, Trigger and Physics

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

Semileptonic decays of charmed mesons in the effective action of QCD

Within the framework of phenomenological Lagrangians we construct the effective action of QCD relevant for the study of semileptonic decays of charmed mesons. Hence we evaluate the form factors of D -> P(0^-) l^+ nu_l at leading order in the 1/N_C expansion and, by demanding their QCD-ruled asymptotic behaviour, we constrain the couplings of the Lagrangian. The features of the model-independent parameterization of form factors provided and their relevance for the analysis of experimental data are pointed out.

QCD Isospin Breaking in Meson Masses, Decay Constants and Quark Mass Ratios

The procedure to calculate masses and matrix-elements in the presence of mixing of the basis states is explained in detail. We then apply this procedure to the two-loop calculation in Chiral Perturbation Theory of pseudoscalar masses and decay constants including quark mass isospin breaking. These results are used to update our analysis of $K_{\ell4}$ done previously and obtain a value of $m_u/m_d$ in addition to values for the low-energy-constants $L_i^r$.

$K_{\ell 4}$ Form-Factors and $π$-$π$ Scattering

The $F$ and $G$ form-factors of $K_{\ell4}$ and the quark condensates are calculated to ${\cal O}(p^6)$ in Chiral Perturbation Theory (CHPT). Full formulas are presented as much as possible. A full refit of most of the ${\cal O}(p^4)$ CHPT parameters is done with a discussion of all inputs and underlying assumptions. We discuss the consequences for the vacuum expectation values, decay constants, pseudoscalar masses and $π$-$π$ scattering.

D^0-D^0(bar) mixing in the weak-gauged U(4)_L x U(4)_R Chiral Lagrangian Model

The D^0-D^0(bar) mixing is analyzed in a weak gauged U(4)_L x U(4)_R chiral lagrangian model where the electroweak interaction is introduced as a gauge theory over the meson degrees of freedom. This model allows a particular realization of the G.I.M. mechanism and then could be useful in the study of processes where G.I.M. suppression is effective. As a test of the model we have also analyzed the K^0-K^0(bar) mixing. We find Δm_K in good agreement with the experimental result and we show that the D^0-D^0(bar) mixing is very much suppressed in agreement with previous estimates in the Heavy Quark expansion framework.

Two-loop hybrid renormalization of local dimension-4 heavy-light operators

The renormalization of local dimension-4 operators containing a heavy and a light quark field at scales below the heavy-quark mass is discussed, using the formalism of the heavy-quark effective theory. The anomalous dimensions of these operators and their mixing are calculated to two-loop order. Some phenomenological applications are briefly discussed.
