Impact of Energy and Luminosity upgrades at LHC on the Physics program of ATLAS

The impact on the physics capabilities of the ATLAS detector of possible LHC upgrades is discussed. As a benchmark, an increase in the luminosity by a factor of ten is considered. For comparison, a doubling of the LHC energy is also explored. Both upgrades significantly enhance the physics capabilities of ATLAS. As measured in terms of the mass reach for new particles, the energy upgrade is more powerful. However, in cases where the effect of an upgrade is to increase the precision of measurements as a result of the larger data samples, the luminosity upgrade can be at least as powerful. The pile-up of minimum bias events at higher luminosity could limit the physics performance of ATLAS in areas where tagging of forward jets is needed.

rho_T Production via W_L Z_L Fusion at Hadronic Colliders

Multiscale technicolor models predict the existence of high mass resonances at hadron colliders. Although the quark fusion process of production dominates, vector boson fusion offers the advantage of allowing forward jet tagging for background suppression. We calculate here the cross section and differential distributions for $ρ_T$ production in the vector boson fusion channel at the LHC.

Radiative Muon Capture on Hydrogen and the Induced Pseudoscalar Coupling

The first measurement of the elementary process $μ^- p \rightarrow ν_μ n γ$ is reported. A photon pair spectrometer was used to measure the partial branching ratio ($2.10 \pm 0.22) \times 10^{-8}$ for photons of k > 60 MeV. The value of the weak pseudoscalar coupling constant determined from the partial branching ratio is $g_p(q^{2}=-0.88m_μ^2) = (9.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.3) \cdot g_a(0)$, where the first error is the quadrature sum of statistical and systematic uncertainties and the second error is due to the uncertainty in $λ_{op}$, the decay rate of the ortho to para $p μp$ molecule. This value of g_p is $\sim$1.5 times the prediction of PCAC and pion-pole dominance.

New Fermions at e$^+$e$^-$ Colliders: II.~Signals and Backgrounds

We discuss the production, at high--energy e$^+$e$^-$ linear colliders, of new heavy fermions predicted by extensions of the Standard Model. We analyze in great details the various signals and the corresponding backgrounds for both pair production and single production in association with ordinary fermions. Concentrating on new leptons, we use a model detector for e$^+$e$^-$ collisions at a center of mass energy of 500 GeV, to illustrate the discovery potential of the Next Linear Colliders.

Signals of New Leptons

We discuss the production of heavy leptons at a future high--energy $e^+e^-$ linear collider with a center of mass energy of 500 GeV. Signals and backgrounds are analyzed for their single production in association with ordinary leptons. [Talk given by A.D. at the second Workshop on "Physics and Experiments with Linear e+e- Colliders", Waikoloa, Hawaii, April 1993].
