Real-time characterization of gated-mode single-photon detectors

We propose a characterization method for the overall detection efficiency, afterpulse and dark count probabilities of single-photon counting modules in real-time with simple instrumentation. This method can be applied when the module is running in its intended application, and is based on monitoring the statistics of the times between consecutive detections. A mathematical model is derived and fit to the data statistical distribution to simultaneously extract the characterization parameters. The feasibility of our scheme is demonstrated by performing measurements on three commercial devices based on cooled InGaAs APD operating in gated mode. Different statistical ensemble lengths were analyzed and results assess the scheme for real-time application.

Employing long fibre-optical Mach- Zehnder interferometers for quantum cryptography with orthogonal states

We experimentally demonstrate that a long distance actively stabilized Mach-Zehnder fibre optical interferometer can be used to reliably implement the GV95 quantum cryptography protocol employing orthogonal states. A proof-of-principle experiment using an interferometer composed of 1 km of spooled optical fibres connecting Alice and Bob is performed. The active stabilisation against phase drifts is done with a classical channel wavelength-multiplexed with the quantum channel and a high stable visibility implying a QBER of 2.2 % is shown.

Stable single-photon interference in a 1 km fiber-optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer with continuous phase adjustment

We experimentally demonstrate stable and user-adjustable single-photon interference in a 1 km long fiber- optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer, using an active phase control system with the feedback provided by a classical laser. We are able to continuously tune the single-photon phase difference between the interferometer arms using a phase modulator, which is synchronized with the gate window of the single-photon detectors. The phase control system employs a piezoelectric fiber stretcher to stabilize the phase drift in the interferometer. A single-photon net visibility of 0.97 is obtained, yielding future possibilities for experimental realizations of quantum repeaters in optical fibers, and violation of Bell's inequalities using genuine energy-time entanglement

Polarisation drift compensation in an 8 km long Mach-Zehnder fibre-optical interferometer for quantum communication

We experimentally stabilise the polarisation drift between the arms of an 8 km-long fibre-optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer, while simultaneously compensating the phase fluctuations. The single photons are wavelength-multiplexed with three classical channels, which are used as feedback for the control systems. Two of these channels are used for the active polarisation control systems, while the other is used to phase-lock the interferometer. We demonstrate long-term stabilisation of the single-photon visibility when polarisation control is used.

Practical random number generation protocol for entanglement-based quantum key distribution

A simple protocol which takes advantage of the inherent random times of detections in single photon counting modules is presented for random active basis choices when using entanglement-based protocols for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). It may also be applicable to the BB84 protocol in certain cases. The scheme presented uses the single photon detectors already present on a QKD setup, working on the same rate as the system is capable of detecting, and is, therefore, not limited by the output rates of quantum random number generators. This protocol only requires small hardware modifications making it an attractive solution. We perform a proof-of-principle experiment employing a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process in a $χ^{(2)}$ non-linear crystal to demonstrate the feasibility of our scheme, and show that the generated sequence passes randomness tests.

Experimental polarization encoded quantum key distribution over optical fibres with real-time continuous birefringence compensation

In this paper we demonstrate an active polarization drift compensation scheme for optical fibres employed in a quantum key distribution experiment with polarization encoded qubits. The quantum signals are wavelength multiplexed in one fibre along with two classical optical side channels that provide the control information for the polarization compensation scheme. This set-up allows us to continuously track any polarization change without the need to interrupt the key exchange. The results obtained show that fast polarization rotations of the order of 40*pi rad/s are effectively compensated for. We demonstrate that our set-up allows continuous quantum key distribution even in a fibre stressed by random polarization fluctuations. Our results pave the way for Bell-state measurements using only linear optics with parties separated by long-distance optical fibres.

Full polarization control for fiber optical quantum communication systems using polarization encoding

A real-time polarization control system employing two nonorthogonal reference signals multiplexed in either time or wavelength with the data signal is presented. It is shown, theoretically and experimentally, that complete control of multiple polarization states can be attained employing polarization controllers in closed-loop configuration. Experimental results show that negligible added penalties, corresponding to an average added optical Quantum Bit Error Rate of 0.044%, can be achieved with response times smaller than 10 ms, without significant introduction of noise counts in the quantum channel.

Narrowband polarization-entangled photon pairs distributed over a WDM link for qubit networks

We present a bright, narrowband, portable, quasi-phase-matched two-crystal source generating polarization-entangled photon pairs at 809 nm and 1555 nm at a maximum rate of 1.2 10^6 s-1 THz-1 mW-1 after coupling to single-mode fiber. The quantum channel at 1555 nm and the synchronization signal gating the single photon detector are multiplexed in the same optical fiber of length 27 km by means of wavelength division multiplexers (WDM) having 100 GHz (0.8 nm) spacing between channels. This implementation makes quantum communication applications compatible with current high-speed optical networks.
