Investigation of the magnetic ground state of GaV$_4$S$_8$ using powder neutron diffraction

The magnetic ground state of polycrystalline Néel skyrmion hosting material GaV$_4$S$_8$ has been investigated using ac susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction. In the absence of an applied magnetic field GaV$_4$S$_8$ undergoes a transition from a paramagnetic to a cycloidal state below 13~K and then to a ferromagnetic-like state below 6~K. With evidence from ac susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction, we have identified the commensurate magnetic structure at 1.5 K, with ordered magnetic moments of $0.23(2)~μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ on the V1 sites and $0.22(1)~μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ on the V2 sites. These moments have ferromagnetic-like alignment but with a 39(8)$^{\circ}$ canting of the magnetic moments on the V2 sites away from the V$_4$ cluster. In the incommensurate magnetic phase that exists between 6 and 13 K, we provide a thorough and careful analysis of the cycloidal magnetic structure exhibited by this material using powder neutron diffraction.

$f$-electron hybridised metallic Fermi surface in magnetic field-induced metallic YbB$_{12}$

The nature of the Fermi surface observed in the recently discovered family of unconventional insulators starting with SmB$_6$ and subsequently YbB$_{12}$ is a subject of intense inquiry. Here we shed light on this question by comparing quantum oscillations between the high magnetic field-induced metallic regime in YbB$_{12}$ and the unconventional insulating regime. In the field-induced metallic regime beyond 47 T, we find prominent quantum oscillations in the contactless resistivity characterised by multiple frequencies up to at least 3000 T and heavy effective masses up to at least 17 $m_\text{e}$, characteristic of an $f$-electron hybridised metallic Fermi surface. The growth of quantum oscillation amplitude at low temperatures in electrical transport and magnetic torque in insulating YbB$_{12}$ is closely similar to the Lifshitz-Kosevich low temperature growth of quantum oscillation amplitude in field-induced metallic YbB$_{12}$, pointing to an origin of quantum oscillations in insulating YbB$_{12}$ from in-gap neutral low energy excitations. The field-induced metallic regime of YbB$_{12}$ is characterised by more Fermi surface sheets of heavy quasiparticle effective mass that emerge in addition to the heavy Fermi surface sheets yielding multiple quantum oscillation frequencies below 1000 T observed in both insulating and metallic regimes. We thus observe a heavy multi-component Fermi surface in which $f$-electron hybridisation persists from the unconventional insulating to the field-induced metallic regime of YbB$_{12}$, which is in distinct contrast to the unhybridised conduction electron Fermi surface observed in the case of the unconventional insulator SmB$_6$. Our findings require a different theoretical model of neutral in-gap low energy excitations in which the $f$-electron hybridisation is retained in the case of the unconventional insulator YbB$_{12}$.

Chiral singlet superconductivity in the weakly correlated metal LaPt3P

Topological superconductors (SCs) are novel phases of matter with nontrivial bulk topology. They host at their boundaries and vortex cores zero-energy Majorana bound states, potentially useful in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Chiral SCs are particular examples of topological SCs with finite angular momentum Cooper pairs circulating around a unique chiral axis, thus spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS). They are rather scarce and usually feature triplet pairing: best studied examples in bulk materials are UPt3 and Sr2RuO4 proposed to be f-wave and p-wave SCs respectively, although many open questions still remain. Chiral triplet SCs are, however, topologically fragile with the gapless Majorana modes weakly protected against symmetry preserving perturbations in contrast to chiral singlet SCs. Using muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements, here we report that the weakly correlated pnictide compound LaPt3P has the two key features of a chiral SC: spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state indicating broken TRS and low temperature linear behaviour in the superfluid density indicating line nodes in the order parameter. Using symmetry analysis, first principles band structure calculation and mean-field theory, we unambiguously establish that the superconducting ground state of LaPt3P is chiral d-wave singlet.

Charge Density Waves and Coplanar Magnetism in Gd2PdSi3

The intermetallic Gd2PdSi3 has recently generated a lot of excitement after reports that it hosts chiral magnetic nano-skyrmions despite its centrosymmetric crystal structure. Using magnetic-field-dependent polarized resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS), we find than an unexpected incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) appears below the ordering transition with a wavevector equal to that of the magnetic textures. Furthermore, we show these incommensurate magnetic textures in Gd2PdSi3 are highly anisotropic, with the vast majority of the spin modulation lying within the hexagonal ab-plane. This observation is not compatible with the previously suggested non-coplanar magnetic textures and coplanar alternatives are discussed. Our results thus refute the interpretation of the observed large anomalous Hall and Nernst effects in Gd2PdSi3 as arising from topologically-nontrivial magnetic skyrmions.

Bloch point-mediated skyrmion annihilation in three dimensions

The creation and annihilation of magnetic skyrmions are mediated by three dimensional topological defects known as Bloch points. Investigation of such dynamical processes is important both for understanding the emergence of exotic topological spin textures, and for future engineering of skyrmions in technological applications. However, while the annihilation of skyrmions has been extensively investigated in two dimensions, in three dimensions the phase transitions are considerably more complex. We report field-dependent experimental measurements of metastable skyrmion lifetimes in an archetypal chiral magnet, revealing two distinct regimes. Comparison to supporting three-dimensional geodesic nudged elastic band simulations demonstrates that these correspond to skyrmion annihilation into either the helical or conical states, each exhibiting a different transition mechanism. The results highlight that the lowest energy magnetic configuration of the system plays a crucial role when considering the emergence of topological spin structures via defect-mediated dynamics, and their stability in future devices.

Evidence for the coexistence of time-reversal symmetry breaking and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like superconductivity in La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$

Time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) with a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) -like superconductivity occurs in a small, but growing number of noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials, although the mechanism is poorly understood. We present heat capacity, magnetization, resistivity, and muon spin resonance/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements on polycrystalline samples of NCS La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$. Transverse-field $μ$SR and heat capacity data show La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$ is a type-II superconductor with a BCS-like gap structure, while zero-field $μ$SR results provide evidence of TRSB. We discuss the implications of these results for both the La$_{7}X_{3}$ (where $X=$ Ni, Pd, Rh, Ir) group of superconductors and other CS and NCS superconductors for which TRSB has been observed.

Megahertz dynamics in skyrmion systems probed with muon-spin relaxation

We present longitudinal-field muon-spin relaxation (LF $μ$SR) measurements on two systems that stabilize a skyrmion lattice (SkL): Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, and Co$_x$Zn$_y$Mn$_{20-x-y}$ for $(x,y)~=~(10,10)$, $(8,9)$ and $(8,8)$. We find that the SkL phase of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ exhibits emergent dynamic behavior at megahertz frequencies, likely due to collective excitations, allowing the SkL to be identified from the $μ$SR response. From measurements following different cooling protocols and calculations of the muon stopping site, we suggest that the metastable SkL is not the majority phase throughout the bulk of this material at the fields and temperatures where it is often observed. The dynamics of bulk Co$_8$Zn$_9$Mn$_3$ are well described by $\simeq~2$ GHz excitations that reduce in frequency near the critical temperature, while in Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ we observe similar behavior over a wide range of temperatures, implying that dynamics of this kind persist beyond the SkL phase.

Coexistence of type-I and type-II superconductivity signatures in ZrB12 probed by muon spin rotation measurements

Superconductors usually display either type-I or type-II superconductivity and the coexistence of these two types in the same material, for example at different temperatures is rare in nature. We the employed muon spin rotation (muSR) technique to unveil the superconducting phase diagram of the dodecaboride ZrB12 and obtained clear evidence of both type-I and type-II characteristics. Most importantly, we found a region showing unusual behavior where the usually mutually exclusive muSR signatures of type-I and type-II superconductivity coexist. We reproduced that behavior in theoretical modeling that required taking into account multiple bands and multiple coherence lengths, which suggests that material has one coherence length larger and another smaller than the magnetic field penetration length (the type-1.5 regime). At stronger fields, a footprint of the type-II mixed state showing square flux-line lattice was also obtained using neutron diffraction.

Structure and magnetism of the skyrmion hosting family GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$ with low levels of substitutions between $0 \leq y \leq 0.5$ and $7.5 \leq y\leq 8$

Polycrystalline members of the GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$ family of materials with small levels of substitution between $0 \leq y \leq 0.5$ and $7.5 \leq y\leq 8$ have been synthesized in order to investigate their magnetic and structural properties. Substitutions to the skyrmion hosting parent compounds GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$, are found to suppress the temperature of the cubic to rhombohedral structural phase transition that occurs in both end compounds and to create a temperature region around the transition where there is a coexistence of these two phases. Similarly, the magnitude of the magnetization and temperature of the magnetic transition are both suppressed in all substituted compounds until a glassy-like magnetic state is realized. There is evidence from the $ac$ susceptibility data that skyrmion lattices with similar dynamics to those in GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$ are present in compounds with very low levels of substitution, $0 < y< 0.2$ and $7.8 < y < 8$, however, these states vanish at higher levels of substitution. The magnetic properties of these substituted materials are affected by the substitution altering exchange pathways and resulting in the creation of increasingly disordered magnetic states.

Surface resonance of the (2$\times$1) reconstructed lanthanum hexaboride (001)-cleavage plane: a combined STM and DFT study

We performed a combined study of the (001)-cleavage plane of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB$_\text{6}$) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). Experimentally, we found a (2$\times$1) reconstructed surface on a local scale. The reconstruction is only short-range ordered and tends to order perpendicularly to step edges. At larger distances from surface steps, the reconstruction evolves to a labyrinth-like pattern. These findings are supported by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) experiments. Slab calculations within the framework of DFT shows that the atomic structure consists of parallel lanthanum chains on top of boron octahedra. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) shows a prominent spectral feature at -0.6 eV. Using DFT, we identify this structure as a surface resonance of the (2$\times$1) reconstructed LaB$_\text{6}$ (100)-surface which is dominated by boron dangling bond-states and lanthanum d-states.

Stability and Metastability of Skyrmions in Thin Lamellae of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

We report small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements of the skyrmion lattice in two 200~nm thick Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ lamellae aligned with the applied magnetic field parallel to the out of plane [110] or [100] crystallographic directions. Our measurements show that the equilibrium skyrmion phase in both samples is expanded significantly compared to bulk crystals, existing between approximately 30 and 50~K over a wide region of magnetic field. This skyrmion state is elliptically distorted at low fields for the [110] sample, and symmetric for the [100] sample, possibly due to crystalline anisotropy becoming more important at this sample thickness than it is in bulk samples. Furthermore, we find that a metastable skyrmion state can be observed at low temperature by field cooling through the equilibrium skyrmion pocket in both samples. In contrast to the behavior in bulk samples, the volume fraction of metastable skyrmions does not significantly depend on cooling rate. We show that a possible explanation for this is the change in the lowest temperature of the skyrmion state in this lamellae compared to bulk, without requiring different energetics of the skyrmion state.

Magnetism and Néel skyrmion dynamics in GaV$_{4}$S$_{8-y}$Se$_{y}$

We present an investigation of the influence of low-levels of chemical substitution on the magnetic ground state and N{\' e}el skyrmion lattice (SkL) state in GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$, where $y =0, 0.1, 7.9$, and $8$. Muon-spin spectroscopy ($μ$SR) measurements on $y=0$ and 0.1 materials reveal the magnetic ground state consists of microscopically coexisting incommensurate cycloidal and ferromagnetic environments, while chemical substitution leads to the growth of localized regions of increased spin density. $μ$SR measurements of emergent low-frequency skyrmion dynamics show that the SkL exists under low-levels of substitution at both ends of the series. Skyrmionic excitations persist to temperatures below the equilibrium SkL in substituted samples, suggesting the presence of skyrmion precursors over a wide range of temperatures.

Pinning of Helimagnetic Phase Transitions in Zn-Substituted Skyrmion Host Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

Magnetic skyrmions are nano-sized topological spin textures stabilized by a delicate balance of magnetic energy terms. The chemical substitution of the underlying crystal structure of skyrmion-hosting materials offers a route to manipulate these energy contributions, but also introduces additional effects such as disorder and pinning. While the effects of doping and disorder have been well studied in B20 metallic materials such as Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si and Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Si, the consequences of chemical substitution in the magnetoelectric insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ have not been fully explored. In this work, we utilize a combination of AC magnetometry and small angle neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic phase transition dynamics in pristine and Zn-substituted Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. The results demonstrate that the first order helical-conical phase transition exhibits two thermally separated behavioural regimes: at high temperatures, the helimagnetic domains transform by large-scale, continuous rotations, while at low temperatures, the two phases coexist. Remarkably, the effects of pinning in the substituted sample are less prevalent at low temperatures, compared to high temperatures, despite the reduction of available thermal activation energy. We attribute this behaviour to the large, temperature-dependent, cubic anisotropy unique to Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$, which becomes strong enough to overcome the pinning energy at low temperatures. Consideration and further exploration of these effects will be crucial when engineering skyrmion materials towards future applications.

Extremely slow non-equilibrium monopole dynamics in classical spin ice

We report on the non-equilibrium monopole dynamics in the classical spin ice Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ detected by means of high-resolution magnetostriction measurements. Significant lattice changes occur at the transition from the kagome-ice to the saturated-ice phase, visible in the longitudinal and transverse magnetostriction. A hysteresis opening at temperatures below 0.6 K suggests a first-order transition between the kagome and saturated state. Extremely slow lattice relaxations, triggered by changes of the magnetic field, were observed. These lattice-relaxation effects result from non-equilibrium monopole formation or annihilation processes. The relaxation times extracted from our experiment are in good agreement with theoretical predictions with decay constants of the order of $10{^4}$ s at 0.3 K.

Real-space imaging of confined magnetic skyrmion tubes

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically nontrivial particles with a potential application as information elements in future spintronic device architectures. While they are commonly portrayed as two dimensional objects, in reality magnetic skyrmions are thought to exist as elongated, tube-like objects extending through the thickness of the sample. Study of this skyrmion tube (SkT) state is highly relevant for investigating skyrmion metastability and for implementation in recently proposed magnonic computing. However, direct experimental imaging of skyrmion tubes has yet to be reported. Here, we demonstrate the first real-space observation of skyrmion tubes in a lamella of FeGe using resonant magnetic x-ray imaging and comparative micromagnetic simulations, confirming their extended structure. The formation of these structures at the edge of the sample highlights the importance of confinement and edge effects in the stabilisation of the SkT state, opening the door to further investigations into this unexplored dimension of the skyrmion spin texture.

Proximity-induced ferromagnetism and chemical reactivity in few layers VSe2 heterostructures

Among Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides, mono and few-layers thick VSe2 has gained much recent attention following claims of intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in this system, which have nonetheless proved controversial. Here, we address the magnetic and chemical properties of Fe/VSe2 heterostructure by combining element sensitive absorption spectroscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. Our x-ray magnetic circular dichroism results confirm recent findings that both native mono/few-layer and bulk VSe2 do not show any signature of an intrinsic ferromagnetic ordering. Nonetheless, we find that ferromagnetism can be induced, even at room temperature, after coupling with a Fe thin film layer, with antiparallel alignment of the moment on the V with respect to Fe. We further consider the chemical reactivity at the Fe/VSe2 interface and its relation with interfacial magnetic coupling.

Superconductivity and the upper critical field in the chiral noncentrosymmetric superconductor NbRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$

NbRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$ crystallises in a chiral noncentrosymmetric structure and exhibits bulk type-II superconductivity below $7.46(5)$~K. Here we show that the temperature dependence of the upper critical field deviates from the behaviour expected for both Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg and the Ginzburg-Landau models and that $μ_{0}H_{\mathrm{c2}}\left(0\right)\approx 18$~T exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit, $μ_{0}H_{\mathrm{P}}=13.9$~T. We explore the reasons for this enhancement. Transverse-field muon spectroscopy measurements suggest that the superconducting gap is either $s$-wave or $\left(s+s\right)$-wave, and the pressure dependence of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ reveals the superconducting gap is primarily $s$-wave in character. The magnetic penetration depth $λ(0) = 595(5)$~nm. Heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of a multigap $\left(s+s\right)$-wave superconducting order parameter and moderate electron-phonon coupling.

Measuring the Formation Energy Barrier of Skyrmions in Zinc Substituted Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$

We report small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements of the skyrmion lattice in (Cu$_{0.976}$Zn$_{0.024}$)$_2$OSeO$_3$ under the application of an electric field. These measurements show an expansion of the skyrmion lattice stability region with electric field similar to that seen in pristine Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Furthermore, using time-resolved SANS, we observe the slow formation of skyrmions after an electric or magnetic field is applied, which has not been observed in pristine Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ crystals. The measured formation times are dramatically longer than the corresponding skyrmion destruction times after the external field is removed, and increase exponentially from 100~s at 52.5~K to 10,000~s at 51.5~K. This thermally activated behaviour indicates an energy barrier for skyrmion formation of 1.57(2)~eV, the size of which demonstrates the huge cost for creating these complex chiral objects.
