Lattice results for the longitudinal spin structure and color forces on quarks in a nucleon

Using lattice QCD, we calculate the twist-2 contribution $a_2$ to the third Mellin moment of the spin structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$ in the nucleon. In addition we evaluate the twist-3 contribution $d_2$. Our computations make use of $N_f=2+1$ gauge field ensembles generated by the Coordinated Lattice Simulations (CLS) effort. Neglecting quark-line disconnected contributions we obtain as our best estimates $a_2^{(p)}= 0.069(17)$, $d_2^{(p)}= 0.0105(68)$ and $a_2^{(n)}= 0.0068(88)$, $d_2^{(n)}= -0.0009(70)$ for the proton and the neutron, respectively, where we use the normalizations given in Eqs. (58) and (59). While the $a_2$ results have been converted to the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme using three-loop perturbation theory, the numbers for $d_2$ are given in the regularization independent momentum subtraction (RI$^\prime$-MOM) scheme, i.e., the conversion has been performed only in tree-level perturbation theory. The $d_2$ results can be interpreted as corresponding to a transverse color Lorentz force on a quark in a transversely polarized proton of size $F^{(u)} = 116(61)$ MeV/fm and $F^{(d)} = -38(66)$ MeV/fm for $u$ and $d$ quarks, respectively. The error estimates quoted include statistical and systematic uncertainties added in quadrature.

Charmonia in moving frames

Lattice simulation of charmonium resonances with non-zero momentum provides additional information on the two-meson scattering matrices. However, the reduced rotational symmetry in a moving frame renders a number of states with different $J^P$ in the same lattice irreducible representation. The identification of $J^P$ for these states is particularly important, since quarkonium spectra contain a number of states with different $J^P$ in a relatively narrow energy region. Preliminary results concerning spin-identification are presented in relation to our study of charmonium resonances in flight on the Nf=2+1 CLS ensembles.

Pion structure from lattice QCD

We report on the lowest moment of parton distribution functions and generalized form factors for the pion at several values of the momentum transfer. Calculations are performed for N_f=2 flavors of O(a) improved Wilson fermions with pion masses down to 150 MeV.

Spectra of heavy-light and heavy-heavy mesons containing charm quarks, including higher spin states for $N_f=2+ 1$

We study the spectra of heavy-light and heavy-heavy mesons containing charm quarks, including higher spin states. We use two sets of $N_f = 2 + 1$ gauge configurations, one set from QCDSF using the SLiNC action, and the other configurations from the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration, using the HEX smeared clover action. To extract information about the excited states, we choose a suitable basis of operators to implement the variational method.

Heavy quarkonium: progress, puzzles, and opportunities

A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and provided specific recommendations for further progress. However, the broad spectrum of subsequent breakthroughs, surprises, and continuing puzzles could only be partially anticipated. Since the release of the YR, the BESII program concluded only to give birth to BESIII; the $B$-factories and CLEO-c flourished; quarkonium production and polarization measurements at HERA and the Tevatron matured; and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC have opened a window on the deconfinement regime. All these experiments leave legacies of quality, precision, and unsolved mysteries for quarkonium physics, and therefore beg for continuing investigations. The plethora of newly-found quarkonium-like states unleashed a flood of theoretical investigations into new forms of matter such as quark-gluon hybrids, mesonic molecules, and tetraquarks. Measurements of the spectroscopy, decays, production, and in-medium behavior of c\bar{c}, b\bar{b}, and b\bar{c} bound states have been shown to validate some theoretical approaches to QCD and highlight lack of quantitative success for others. The intriguing details of quarkonium suppression in heavy-ion collisions that have emerged from RHIC have elevated the importance of separating hot- and cold-nuclear-matter effects in quark-gluon plasma studies. This review systematically addresses all these matters and concludes by prioritizing directions for ongoing and future efforts.

Charmed Exotics

These are the mini-proceedings of the CHARMEX workshop. The meeting focused on recent developments in charm spectroscopy, especially on the possible role of the states that do not fit into the quark model classification, the so-called exotic states. The goal of this write-up is to provide the community with a short summary of the individual talks as well as a comprehensive, up-to-date list of relevant references.

Disconnected contributions to hadronic structure: a new method for stochastic noise reduction

We present a new method for reducing the stochastic noise of all-to-all propagators based on stopping the inversion of the propagator before convergence. The method is easy to implement, unbiased and independent of the quark action. Applying this method to the calculation of disconnected loops needed for hadronic structure observables we find savings in computer time of factors of 4-12 depending on the operator inserted in the loop. When combined with a hopping parameter expansion technique we obtain combined gains of up to factors of 30 for some operators.

Heavy Quarkonium Physics

This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment, covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.

Two Quark Potentials

In this Chapter QCD interactions between a quark and an anti-quark are discussed. In the heavy quark limit these potentials can be related to quarkonia and $1/m$ corrections can be systematically determined. Excitations of the ground state potential provide an entry point into the phenomenology of quark-gluon hybrids. The short-distance behaviour of non-perturbative potentials can serve as a test of resummation and convergence of perturbative expansions. Torelons and potentials between non-fundamental colour charges offer a window into the origin of the confinement mechanism and relate to effective string descriptions of low energy aspects of QCD.

Flavour singlet pseudoscalar masses in N_f = 2 QCD

We perform a lattice mass analysis in the flavour singlet pseudoscalar channel on the SESAM and TXL full QCD vacuum configurations, with 2 active flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions at beta = 5.6. At our inverse lattice spacing, a^-1 = 2.3 GeV, we retrieve by a chiral extrapolation to the physical light quark masses the value m_eta' = 3.7(+8)(-4) m_pi. A crude extrapolation from (N_f = 3) phenomenology would suggest m_eta' \approx 5.1 m_pi for N_f = 2 QCD. we verify that the mass gap between the singlet state eta' and the pi flavour triplt state is due to gauge configurations with non-trivial topology.

Decorrelating Topology with HMC

The investigation of the decorrelation efficiency of the HMC algorithm with respect to vacuum topology is a prerequisite for trustworthy full QCD simulations, in particular for the computation of topology sensitive quantities. We demonstrate that for mpi/mrho ratios <= 0.69 sufficient tunneling between the topological sectors can be achieved, for two flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions close to the scaling region beta=5.6. Our results are based on time series of length 5000 trajectories.

Scanning the Topological Sectors of the QCD Vacuum with Hybrid Monte Carlo

We address a long standing issue and determine the decorrelation efficiency of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm (HMC), for full QCD with Wilson fermions, with respect to vacuum topology. On the basis of five state-of-the art QCD vacuum field ensembles (with 3000 to 5000 trajectories each and m_pi/m_rho-ratios in the regime >0.56, for two sea quark flavours) we are able to establish, for the first time, that HMC provides sufficient tunneling between the different topological sectors of QCD. This will have an important bearing on the prospect to determine, by lattice techniques, the topological susceptibility of the vacuum, and topology sensitive quantities like the spin content of the proton, or the eta' mass.

Critical Dynamics of the Hybrid Monte Carlo Algorithm

We investigate the critical dynamics of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm approaching the chiral limit of standard Wilson fermions. Our observations are based on time series of lengths O(5000) for a variety of observables. The lattice sizes are 16^3 x 32 and 24^3 x 40. We work at beta=5.6, and kappa=0.156, 0.157, 0.1575, 0.158, with 0.83 > m_pi/m_rho > 0.55. We find surprisingly small integrated autocorrelation times for local and extended observables. The dynamical critical exponent $z$ of the exponential autocorrelation time is compatible with 2. We estimate the total computational effort to scale between V^2 and V^2.25 towards the chiral limit.

Heavy Hybrids from NRQCD

We present results for the exotic $0^{+-}$ and $1^{-+}$ $b\bar{b}g$ hybrids at $β=6.0$. A leading order NRQCD action is used to generate the heavy quark propagators. The optimisation of operators is discussed and we compare our results to the predictions of recent potential calculations.

SESAM and TXL Results for Wilson Action--A Status Report

Results from two studies of full QCD with two flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions are presented. At beta=5.6, the region 0.83 > m_pi/m_rho > 0.56 at m_pia > 0.23 L^{-1} is explored. The SESAM collaboration has generated ensembles of about 200 statistically independent configurations on a 16^3 x 32-lattice at three different kappa-values and is entering the final phase of data analysis. The TXL simulation on a 24^3 x 40-lattice at two kappa-values has reached half statistics and data analysis has started recently, hence most results presented here are preliminary. The focus of this report is fourfold: we demonstrate that algorithmic improvements like fast Krylov solvers and parallel preconditioning recently introduced can be put into practise in full QCD simulations, we present encouraging observations as to the critical dynamics of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm in the approach to the chiral limit, we mention signal improvements of noisy estimator techniques for disconnected diagrams to the pi-N sigma term, and we report on SESAM's results for light hadron spectrum, light quark masses, and heavy quarkonia.
