Search for $CP$ violation in $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ decays

A search for $CP$ violation in charmless three-body $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ decays is performed using $pp$ collision data recorded with the LHCb detector, corresponding to integrated luminosities of $1\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 7\,\text{TeV}$, $2\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 8\,\text{TeV}$ and $2\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text{TeV}$. A good description of the phase-space distribution is obtained with an amplitude model containing contributions from $Σ(1385)$, $Λ(1405)$, $Λ(1520)$, $Λ(1670)$, $Σ(1775)$ and $Σ(1915)$ resonances. The model allows for $CP$-violation effects, which are found to be consistent with zero. The branching fractions of $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1385) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1405) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1520) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Λ(1670) K^-$, $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1775) K^-$ and $Ξ_b^- \to Σ(1915) K^-$ decays are also reported. In addition, an upper limit is placed on the product of ratios of $Ω_b^-$ and $Ξ_b^-$ fragmentation fractions and the $Ω_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ and $Ξ_b^- \to p K^- K^-$ branching fractions.

Study of the $ψ_2(3823)$ and $χ_{c1}(3872)$ states in $B^+ \rightarrow \left( Jψπ^+π^-\right)K^+$ decays

The decays $B^+\rightarrow J/ψπ^+ π^- K^+$ are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions with the intermediate $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are reported. The decay of $B^+\rightarrow ψ_2(3823)K^+$ with $ψ_2(3823)\rightarrow Jψπ^+π^-$ is observed for the first time with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations. The mass differences between the $ψ_2(3823)$, $χ_{c1}(3872)$ and $ψ(2S)$ states are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rcl} m_{χ_{c1(3872)}} - m_{ψ_2(3823)} &= & 47.50 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.13\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{ψ_2(3823)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 137.98 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.14\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \\ m_{χ_{c1}(3872)} - m_{ψ(2S)} &= & 185.49 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03\,\mathrm{MeV/}c^2\,, \end{array} $$ resulting in the most precise determination of the $χ_{c1}(3782)$ mass. The width of the $ψ_2(3823)$ state is found to be below 5.2MeV at 90\% confidence level. The Breit-Wigner width of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state is measured to be $$ Γ^{\mathrm{BW}}_{χ_{c1}(3872)} = 0.96^{+0.19}_{-0.18}\pm0.21 \mathrm{MeV},$$ which is inconsistent with zero by 5.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays

A measurement of the $CP$ asymmetry in $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decays is reported, based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^{-1}$. The flavor of the $D^0$ candidate is determined using the charge of the $D^{*\pm}$ meson, from which the decay is required to originate. The $D^0 \to K^+ K^-$ decay is used as a calibration channel. The time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry for the $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ mode is measured to be: $$A^{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-3.1\pm 1.2\pm 0.4 \pm 0.2)\%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the $CP$ asymmetry of the calibration channel. This is the most precise determination of this quantity to date.

Observation of new resonances decaying to $J/ψK^+$ and $J/ψϕ$

The first observation of exotic states with a new quark content $c \bar{c} u \bar{s}$ decaying to the $J/ψK^+$ final state is reported with high significance from an amplitude analysis of the $B^+ \to J/ψϕK^+$ decay. The analysis is carried out using proton-proton collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The most significant state, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, has a mass of $4003\pm6\,^{+\,\phantom{0}4}_{-\,14}$ MeV, a width of $131\pm15\pm26$ MeV, and spin-parity $J^P=1^+$, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A new $1^+$ $X(4685)$ state decaying to the $J/ψϕ$ final state is also observed with high significance. In addition, the four previously reported $J/ψϕ$ states are confirmed and two more exotic states, $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$ and $X(4630)$, are observed with significance exceeding five standard deviations.

Search for the doubly heavy baryons $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ and $\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ decaying to $\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ and $\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$

The first search for the doubly heavy $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ baryon and a search for $\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ baryon are performed using $pp$ collision data collected via the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $13TeV$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2$fb^{-1}$. The baryons are reconstructed via their decays to $\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ and $\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$. No significant excess is found for invariant masses between 6700 and 7300$MeV/c^2$, in a rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and a transverse momentum range from 2 to 20$GeV/c$. Upper limits are set on the ratio of the $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ and $\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ production cross-section times the branching fraction to $\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ ($\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$) relative to that of the $\it{Λ_b^{\rm0}}$ ($\it{Ξ_b^{\rm0}}$) baryon, for different lifetime hypotheses, at $95\%$ confidence level. The upper limits range from $0.5\times10^{-4}$ to $2.5\times10^{-4}$ for the $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}\rightarrow\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ ($\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}\rightarrow\it{Λ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$) decay, and from $1.4\times10^{-3}$ to $6.9\times10^{-3}$ for the $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}\rightarrow\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$ ($\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}\rightarrow\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{-}}$) decay, depending on the considered mass and lifetime of the $\itΩ_{bc}^{\rm0}$ ($\itΞ_{bc}^{\rm0}$) baryon.

Precise measurement of the $f_s/f_d$ ratio of fragmentation fractions and of $B^0_s$ decay branching fractions

The ratio of the $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ fragmentation fractions, $f_s/f_d$, in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, is obtained as a function of $B$-meson transverse momentum and collision centre-of-mass energy from the combined analysis of different $B$-decay channels measured by the LHCb experiment. The results are described by a linear function of the meson transverse momentum, or with a function inspired by Tsallis statistics. Precise measurements of the branching fractions of the $B^0_s \to J/ψϕ$ and $B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+$ decays are performed, reducing their uncertainty by about a factor of two with respect to previous world averages. Numerous $B^0_s$ decay branching fractions, measured at the LHCb experiment, are also updated using the new values of $f_s/f_d$ and branching fractions of normalisation channels. These results reduce a major source of systematic uncertainty in several searches for new physics performed through measurements of $B^0_s$ branching fractions.

Observation of new excited $B_s^0$ states

A structure is observed in the $B^+K^-$ mass spectrum in a sample of proton--proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb${}^-1$. The structure is interpreted as the result of overlapping excited $B_s^0$ states. With high significance, a two-peak hypothesis provides a better description of the data than a single resonance. Under this hypothesis the masses and widths of the two states, assuming they decay directly to $B^+K^-$, are determined to be $m_1 = 6063.5 \pm 1.2 \text{ (stat)} \pm 0.8\text{ (syst) MeV},$ $Γ_1 = 26 \pm 4 \text{ (stat)} \pm 4\text{ (syst) MeV},$ $m_2 = 6114 \pm 3 \text{ (stat)} \pm 5\text{ (syst) MeV},$ $Γ_2 = 66 \pm 18 \text{ (stat)} \pm 21\text{ (syst) MeV}.$ Alternative values assuming a decay through $B^{*+}K^-$, with a missing photon from the $B^{*+} \rightarrow B^+γ$ decay, which are shifted by approximately 45 MeV are also determined. The possibility of a single state decaying in both channels is also considered. The ratio of the total production cross-section times branching fraction of the new states relative to the previously observed $B_{s2}^{*0}$ state is determined to be $0.87 \pm 0.15 \text{ (stat)} \pm 0.19 \text{ (syst)}$.

Evidence of a $J/ψ\varLambda$ structure and observation of excited $\varXi^-$ states in the $\varXi_b^-\to J/ψ\varLambda K^-$ decay

First evidence of a structure in the $J/ψ\varLambda$ invariant mass distribution is obtained from an amplitude analysis of $\varXi_b^- \to J/ψ\varLambda K^-$ decays. The observed structure is consistent with being due to a charmonium pentaquark with strangeness. Its mass and width are determined to be $4458.8\pm2.9\,^{+4.7}_{-1.1}$MeV and $17.3\pm6.5\,^{+8.0}_{-5.7}$MeV, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The structure is also consistent with being due to two resonances. In addition, the narrow excited $\varXi^-$ states, $\varXi(1690)^-$ and $\varXi(1820)^-$, are seen for the first time in a $\varXi_b^-$ decay, and their masses and widths are measured with improved precision. The analysis is performed using $pp$ collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $7$, $8$ and $13$TeV.

Angular analysis of $B^0 \to D^{*-}D_s^{*+}$ with $D_s^{*+} \to D_s^+ γ$ decays

The first full angular analysis of the $B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^{*+}$ decay is performed using 6 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The $D_s^{*+} \to D_s^+ γ$ and $D^{*-} \to \bar{D}^0 π^-$ vector meson decays are used with the subsequent $D_s^+ \to K^+ K^- π^+$ and $\bar{D}^0 \to K^+ π^-$ decays. All helicity amplitudes and phases are measured, and the longitudinal polarisation fraction is determined to be $f_{\rm L} = 0.578 \pm 0.010 \pm 0.011$ with world-best precision, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The pattern of helicity amplitude magnitudes is found to align with expectations from quark-helicity conservation in $B$ decays. The ratio of branching fractions $[\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^{*+}) \times \mathcal{B}(D_s^{*+} \to D_s^+ γ)]/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+)$ is measured to be $2.045 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.071$ with world-best precision. In addition, the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed $B_s^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+$ decay is made with a significance of seven standard deviations. The branching fraction ratio $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+)/\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^{*-} D_s^+)$ is measured to be $0.049 \pm 0.006 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.002$, where the third uncertainty is due to limited knowledge of the ratio of fragmentation fractions.

Measurement of the prompt-production cross-section ratio $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$ in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

This Letter reports the first measurement of prompt $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ charmonium production in nuclear collisions at Large Hadron Collider energies. The cross-section ratio $σ(χ_{c2}) / σ(χ_{c1})$ is measured in $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, collected with the LHCb experiment. The $χ_{c1,2}$ states are reconstructed via their decay to a $\rm{J}/ψ$ meson, subsequently decaying into a pair of oppositely charged muons, and a photon, which is reconstructed in the calorimeter or via its conversion in the detector material. The cross-section ratio is consistent with unity in the two considered rapidity regions. Comparison with a corresponding cross-section ratio previously measured by the LHCb collaboration in $pp$ collisions suggests that $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ states are similarly affected by nuclear effects occurring in $p$Pb collisions.

Search for $CP$ violation in $D_{(s)}^{+}\rightarrow h^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_{(s)}^{+}\rightarrow h^{+}η$ decays

Searches for $CP$ violation in the two-body decays $D_{(s)}^{+}\rightarrow h^{+}π^{0}$ and $D_{(s)}^{+} \rightarrow h^{+}η$ (where $h^{+}$ denotes a $π^{+}$ or $K^{+}$ meson) are performed using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb experiment corresponding to either 9 fb$^{-1}$ or 6 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The $π^{0}$ and $η$ mesons are reconstructed using the $e^{+}e^{-}γ$ final state, which can proceed as three-body decays $π^{0}\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}γ$ and $η\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}γ$, or via the two-body decays $π^{0}\rightarrow γγ$ and $η\rightarrowγγ$ followed by a photon conversion. The measurements are made relative to the control modes $D_{(s)}^{+}\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} h^{+}$ to cancel the production and detection asymmetries. The $CP$ asymmetries are measured to be \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow π^{+}π^{0}) &= (-1.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.6 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{0}) &= (-3.2 \pm 4.7 \pm 2.1 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow π^{+}η) &= (-0.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.4 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}η) &= (-6 \pm 10 \pm 4 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{0}) &= (-0.8 \pm 3.9 \pm 1.2 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow π^{+}η) &= (0.8 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.5 )\%, \end{align} \begin{align} \mathcal{A}_{CP}(D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}η) &= (0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 1.1 )\%, \end{align} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These results are consistent with no $CP$ violation and mostly constitute the most precise measurements of $\mathcal{A}_{CP}$ in these decay modes to date.

Calibration of diamond detectors for dosimetry in beam-loss monitoring

Artificially-grown diamond crystals have unique properties that make them suitable as solid-state particle detectors and dosimeters in high-radiation environments. We have been using sensors based on single-crystal diamond grown by chemical vapour deposition for dosimetry and beam-loss monitoring at the SuperKEKB collider. Here we describe the assembly and the suite of test and calibration procedures adopted to characterise the diamond-based detectors of this monitoring system. We report the results obtained on 28 detectors and assess the stability and uniformity of response of these devices.

Angular analysis of the $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{\ast+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay

We present an angular analysis of the $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{\ast+}(\rightarrow K_{S}^{0}π^{+})μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay using 9$\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb experiment. For the first time, the full set of CP-averaged angular observables is measured in intervals of the dimuon invariant mass squared. Local deviations from Standard Model predictions are observed, similar to those in previous LHCb analyses of the isospin-partner $B^{0}\rightarrow K^{\ast0}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay. The global tension is dependent on which effective couplings are considered and on the choice of theory nuisance parameters.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the $B^{0}\rightarrow D_{s}^{+}π^{-}$ decay

A branching fraction measurement of the $B^{0}\rightarrow D_{s}^{+}π^{-}$ decay is presented using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.0\,$fb$^{-1}$. The branching fraction is found to be ${\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\rightarrow D_{s}^{+}π^{-}) = (19.4 \pm 1.8\pm 1.3 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-6}}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the $B^0 \to D^{-}π^{+}$, $D_{s}^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}π^{+}$ and $D^{-}\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}π^{-}$ branching fractions. This is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date. As this decay proceeds through a single amplitude involving a $b \to u$ charged-current transition, the result provides information on non-factorisable strong interaction effects and the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$. Additionally, the collision energy dependence of the hadronisation-fraction ratio $f_s/f_d$ is measured through $\bar{B}{}_{s}^{0}\rightarrow D_{s}^{+}π^{-}$ and $B^0 \to D^{-}π^{+}$ decays.

Measurement of $C\!P$ observables in $B^\pm \to D^{(*)} K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to D^{(*)} π^\pm$ decays using two-body $D$ final states

Measurements of $C\!P$ observables in $B^\pm \rightarrow D^{(*)} K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \rightarrow D^{(*)} π^\pm$ decays are presented, where $D^{(*)}$ indicates a neutral $D$ or $D^*$ meson that is an admixture of meson and anti-meson states. Decays of the $D^*$ meson to the $Dπ^0$ and $Dγ$ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon. Decays of the $D$ meson are reconstructed in the $K^\pm π^\mp$, $K^+K^-$, and $π^+π^-$ final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged $B$ mesons produced in proton-proton collisions and collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0, 1.0, and 5.7 fb$^{-1}$ taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements of partially reconstructed $B^\pm \to D^* K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to D^* π^\pm$ with $D \to K^\mp π^\pm$ decays are the first of their kind, and a first observation of the $B^\pm \to (D π^0)_{D^*} π^\pm$ decay is made with a significance of 6.1 standard deviations. All $C\!P$ observables are measured with world-best precision, and in combination with other LHCb results will provide strong constraints on the CKM angle $γ$.

Measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ and $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ mixing frequency with $B^0_s \rightarrow D_s^\mp h^\pm π^\pm π^\mp$ decays

The CKM angle $γ$ is measured for the first time from mixing-induced $CP$ violation between $B^0_s \rightarrow D_s^\mp K^\pm π^\pm π^\mp$ and $\bar{B}^0_s \rightarrow D_s^\pm K^\mp π^\mp π^\pm$ decays reconstructed in proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent amplitude analysis is performed to extract the $CP$-violating weak phase $γ-2β_s$ and, subsequently, $γ$ by taking the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ mixing phase $β_{s}$ as an external input. The measurement yields $γ= (44 \pm 12)^\circ$ modulo $180^\circ$, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined. An alternative model-independent measurement, integrating over the five-dimensional phase space of the decay, yields $γ= (44^{\,+\,20}_{\,-\,13})^\circ$ modulo $180^\circ$. Moreover, the $B^0_s$-$\bar{B}^0_s$ oscillation frequency is measured from the flavour-specific control channel $B^0_s \rightarrow D_s^- π^+ π^+ π^-$ to be $Δm_s = (17.757 \pm 0.007 \,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.008 \,({\rm syst.})) \text{ps}^{-1}$, consistent with and more precise than the current world-average value.

Search for long-lived particles decaying to $e^\pm μ^\mp ν$

Long-lived particles decaying to $e^\pm μ^\mp ν$, with masses between 7 and $50$ GeV/c$^2$ and lifetimes between 2 and $50$ ps, are searched for by looking at displaced vertices containing electrons and muons of opposite charges. The search is performed using $5.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. Three mechanisms of production of long-lived particles are considered: the direct pair production from quark interactions, the pair production from the decay of a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of $125$ GeV/c$^2$, and the charged current production from an on-shell $W$ boson with an additional lepton. No evidence of these long-lived states is obtained and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction are set on the different production modes.

Observation of a new excited $D_s^+$ meson in $B^0\to D^-D^+K^+π^-$ decays

Using $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,{\rm TeV}$, the $B^0\to D^-D^+K^+π^-$ decay is studied. A new excited $D_s^+$ meson is observed decaying into the $D^+K^+π^-$ final state with large statistical significance. The pole mass and width, and the spin-parity of the new state are measured with an amplitude analysis to be $m_R=2591\pm6\pm7\,{\rm MeV}$, $Γ_R=89\pm16\pm12\,{\rm MeV}$ and $J^P=0^-$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Fit fractions for all components in the amplitude analysis are also reported. The new resonance, denoted as $D_{s0}(2590)^+$, is a strong candidate to be the $D_s(2^1{S}_0)^+$ state, the radial excitation of the pseudoscalar ground-state $D_s^+$ meson.
