Magnetoelastic coupling at the field-induced transition in EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$

Magnetoelastic coupling plays a crucial role in magnetic-field-induced transitions in anisotropic ferromagnets. Ultrasonic methods are suitable for experimental investigations of these phenomena. We investigate elastic constants in EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$, a quasi-two-dimensional anisotropic ferromagnet, by measuring sound velocity in magnetic fields perpendicular to spontaneous magnetization. The shear modulus $C_{44}$ exhibits dramatic softening at the field-induced transition from the ferromagnetic to a paramagnetic phase with magnetic moments forced to polarize along the applied transverse field. The softening is attributed to strong magnetic fluctuations near a second-order phase transition. Theoretical calculations based on magnetization data qualitatively reproduced the observed behavior within a strain-exchange mechanism. These results demonstrate that magnetoelastic coupling in EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$ arises primarily from exchange striction and provide a framework for modeling similar transitions in other anisotropic ferromagnets.

Quantum disordered ground state and relative proximity to an exactly solvable model in the frustrated magnet CeMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$

The magnetic properties of the triangular magnet CeMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$ were investigated by magnetization and specific heat measurements down to $T=0.03\,$K on single crystals grown by the floating zone method. The formation of effective spins $S_\mathrm{eff}= 1/2$ below $T < 10$\,K was confirmed both by DFT calculations and specific heat measurements. No magnetic order was found down to $T=0.03\,$K despite the formation of magnetic correlations observed in specific heat. The measured magnetization was compared with DMRG computation and their agreement supports the proposal of a strongly anisotropic magnetic interaction antiferromagnetically coupling the spin components in the $ab$ plane and ferromagnetically coupling the spin component along the $c$ axis. However, our quantitative study of the magnetization indicates a weaker proximity to quantum criticality between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism than the previous inelastic neutron scattering study. Finally, we propose that the absence of magnetic order in CeMgAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$ would most probably be related to the structural disorder revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Induced quantum magnetism on a triangular lattice of non-Kramers ions in PrMgAl11O19

We report the magnetic properties of the quantum triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) PrMgAl11O19 through magnetization and specific heat measurements. Strong magnetic anisotropy indicates the realization of an Ising-like magnetism in PrMgAl11O19 single crystal while no long-range magnetic ordering is realized down to 0.4 K. The splitting of the low-lying quasi-doublet into two singlets suggested by experimental data, is consistent with an effective pseudospin-1/2 scenario. The observed gapless excitations in zero field are attributed to induced quantum magnetism, they would be induced by magnetic interactions of an energy scale comparable with the splitting between the two singlets. Based on these results, we modeled the magnetic ground state of PrMgAl11O19 by a quantum Ising magnet with an intrinsic transverse field rather than a quantum spin liquid (QSL). In addition, our data show a non-monotonous response of the low-temperature specific heat to the external fields revealing a complex interplay between intrinsic and external magnetic fields.

A frustrated antipolar phase analogous to classical spin liquids

The study of magnetic frustration in classical spin systems was motivated by the prediction and discovery of classical spin liquid states. These uncommon magnetic phases are characterized by a massive degeneracy of their ground state implying a finite magnetic entropy at zero temperature. While the classical spin liquid state was originally predicted in the Ising triangular lattice antiferromagnet in 1950, this state has never been experimentally observed in any triangular magnets. We report here the discovery of an electric analogue of classical spin liquids on a triangular lattice of uniaxial electric dipoles in EuAl12O19 . This new type of frustrated antipolar phase is characterized by a highly degenerate state at low temperature implying an absence of long-range antiferroelectric order, despite short-range antipolar correlations. Its dynamics are governed by a thermally activated process, slowing down upon cooling towards a complete freezing at zero temperature.

Quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnetism in the triangular magnet EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$

We report ferromagnetic ordering at $T_\mathrm {C}=1.3\,$K in the quasi-two dimensional magnet EuAl$_{12}$O$_{19}$ with large spins $S=7/2$. This ferromagnetic state was characterized by magnetization and specific heat measurements and the experimental results were compared with classical Monte Carlo simulations. They reveal a strong single ion anisotropy leading to an uniaxial spontaneous magnetization along the $c$ axis. Furthermore the application of a magnetic field in the hard magnetization plane $ab$ reduces the Curie temperature and it reaches zero temperature at a magnetic field of $\mu_\mathrm{0} H_c \approx 0.5\,$T.

Quasi-2D Fermi surface in the anomalous superconductor UTe2

The heavy fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ exhibits numerous characteristics of spin-triplet superconductivity. Efforts to understand the microscopic details of this exotic superconductivity have been impeded by uncertainty regarding the underlying electronic structure. Here we directly probe the Fermi surface of UTe$_2$ by measuring magnetic quantum oscillations in pristine quality crystals. We find an angular profile of quantum oscillatory frequency and amplitude that is characteristic of a quasi-2D Fermi surface, which we find is well described by two cylindrical Fermi sheets of electron- and hole-type respectively. Additionally, we find that both cylindrical Fermi sheets possess considerable undulation but negligible small-scale corrugation, which may allow for their near-nesting and therefore promote magnetic fluctuations that enhance the triplet pairing mechanism. Importantly, we find no evidence for the presence of any 3D Fermi surface sections. Our results place strong constraints on the possible symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in UTe$_2$.

Quantum interference between quasi-2D Fermi surface sheets in UTe2

UTe$_2$ is a spin-triplet superconductor candidate for which high quality samples with long mean free paths have recently become available, enabling quantum oscillation measurements to probe its Fermi surface and effective carrier masses. It has recently been reported that UTe$_2$ possesses a 3D Fermi surface component [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 036501 (2023)]. The distinction between 2D and 3D Fermi surface sections in triplet superconductors can have important implications regarding the topological properties of the superconductivity. Here we report the observation of oscillatory components in the magnetoconductance of UTe$_2$ at high magnetic fields. We find that these oscillations are well described by quantum interference between quasiparticles traversing semiclassical trajectories spanning magnetic breakdown networks. Our observations are consistent with a quasi-2D model of this material's Fermi surface based on prior dHvA-effect measurements. Our results strongly indicate that UTe$_2$ -- which exhibits a multitude of complex physical phenomena -- possesses a remarkably simple Fermi surface consisting exclusively of two quasi-2D cylindrical sections.

Enhanced triplet superconductivity in next generation ultraclean UTe2

The unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits numerous signatures of spin-triplet superconductivity -- a rare state of matter which could enable quantum computation protected against decoherence. UTe$_2$ possesses a complex phase landscape comprising two magnetic field-induced superconducting phases, a metamagnetic transition to a field-polarised state, along with pair- and charge-density wave orders. However, contradictory reports between studies performed on UTe$_2$ specimens of varying quality have severely impeded theoretical efforts to understand the microscopic origins of the exotic superconductivity. Here, we report a comprehensive suite of high magnetic field measurements on a new generation of pristine quality UTe$_2$ crystals. Our experiments reveal a significantly revised high magnetic field superconducting phase diagram in the ultraclean limit, showing a pronounced sensitivity of field-induced superconductivity to the presence of crystalline disorder. We employ a Ginzburg-Landau model that excellently captures this acute dependence on sample quality. Our results suggest that in close proximity to a field--induced metamagnetic transition the enhanced role of magnetic fluctuations -- that are strongly suppressed by disorder -- is likely responsible for tuning UTe$_2$ between two distinct spin-triplet superconducting phases.

Dilution of the magnetic lattice in the Kitaev candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ by Rh$^{3+}$ doping

Magnetic dilution of a well-established Kitaev candidate system is realized in the substitutional Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Cl$_3$ series ($x = 0.02-0.6$). Optimized syntheses protocols yield uniformly-doped single crystals and polycrystalline powders that are isostructural to the parental $α$-RuCl$_3$ as per X-ray diffraction. The Rh content $x$ is accurately determined by the quantitative energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy technique with standards. We determine the magnetic phase diagram of Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$Cl$_3$ for in-plane magnetic fields from magnetization and specific-heat measurements as a function of $x$ and stacking periodicity, and identify the suppression of the magnetic order at $x \approx 0.2$ towards a disordered phase, which does not show any clear signature of freezing into a spin glass. Comparing with previous studies on the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$, we propose that chemical pressure would contribute to the suppression of magnetic order especially in Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$Cl$_3$ and that the zigzag magnetic ground state appears to be relatively robust with respect to the dilution of the Kitaev--$Γ$--Heisenberg magnetic lattice. We also discovered a slight dependence of the magnetic properties on thermal cycling, which would be due to an incomplete structural transition.

Combined experimental and theoretical study of hydrostatic (He-gas) pressure effects in $α$-RuCl$_3$

We report a detailed experimental and theoretical study on the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the structural and magnetic aspects of the layered honeycomb antiferromagent $α$-RuCl$_{3}$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements performed under almost ideal hydrostatic-pressure conditions yield that the phase transition to zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 7.3 K can be rapidly suppressed to about 6.1 K. A further suppression with increasing pressure is impeded due to the occurrence of a pressure-induced structural transition at $p \geq$ 104 MPa, accompanied by a strong dimerization of Ru-Ru bonds, which gives rise to a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Whereas the dimerization transition is strongly first order, as reflected by large discontinuous changes in $χ$ and pronounced hysteresis effects, the magnetic transition under varying pressure and magnetic field also reveals indications for a weakly first-order transition. We assign this observation to a strong magnetoelastic coupling in this system. Measurements of $χ$ under varying pressure in the paramagnetic regime ($T > T_N$) and before dimerization ($p <$ 100 MPa) reveal a considerable increase of $χ$ with pressure. These experimental observations are consistent with the results of ab-initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the pressure-dependent structure and the corresponding pressure-dependent magnetic model. Comparative susceptibility measurements on a second crystal showing two consecutive magnetic transitions instead of one, indicating the influence of stacking faults. Using different temperature-pressure protocols the effect of these stacking faults can be temporarily overcome, transforming the magnetic state from a multiple-$T_N$ into a single-$T_N$ state.

Magnetic interactions in the tripod-kagome antiferromagnet Mg$_{2}$Gd$_{3}$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$ probed by static magnetometry and high-field ESR spectroscopy

We report an experimental study of the static magnetization $M(H,T)$ and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of polycrystalline \MgGd, a representative member of the newly discovered class of the so-called tripod-kagome antiferromagnets where the isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ spins ($S = 7/2$) form a two-dimensional kagome spin-frustrated lattice. It follows from the analysis of the low-$T$ $M(H)$-curves that the Gd$^{3+}$ spins are coupled by a small isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interaction $|J| \approx$ 0.3\,K. The $M(H,T)$-dependences measured down to 0.5\,K evidence a long-range AFM order at $T_{\text{N}} = 1.7$\,K and its rapid suppression at higher fields $\geq 4$\,T. ESR spectra measured in fields up to 15\,T are analyzed considering possible effects of demagnetizing fields, single-ion anisotropy and spin-spin correlations. While the demagnetization effects due to a large sample magnetization in high fields and its shape anisotropy become relevant at low temperatures, the broadening of the ESR line commencing already at $T\lesssim 30$\,K may indicate the onset of the spin-spin correlations far above the ordering temperature due to the geometrical spin frustration in this compound.

Long-range magnetic order in the ${\tilde S}=1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet KCeS$_2$

Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $μ$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$.

Disordered magnetism in the double perovskite LaCaScIrO6 with a distorted fcc lattice of Ir4+

The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown material LaCaScIrO$_6$ is reported. LaCaScIrO$_6$ presents a new example of the rare case of a double perovskite with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5\textit{d}-ion Ir$^{4+}$ as its only magnetic species, forming a monoclinically distorted version of the frustrated fcc lattice. Magnetization measurements show a weak anomaly at 8~K. The Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ and effective magnetic moment μ$_{eff}$ of LaCaScIrO$_6$ are in close proximity to the related compound La$_2$MgIrO$_6$ but differ from La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. This suggests that the nature of the non-magnetic \textit{B}-ion, namely its \textit{d}-orbital filling has a strong influence on the magnetic properties. The \textit{d}$^{0}$-ions Sc$^{3+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$ allow a different kind of exchange interactions within the Ir-sublattice than the \textit{d}$^{10}$-ion Zn$^{2+}$. In addition, ac-susceptibility data does not show signs of a spin-glass ground state. The nature of the magnetism in LaCaScIrO$_6$ has been further elucidated using muon spin relaxation measurements. The zero-field measurements reveal the absence of well defined oscillations down to 1.6\,K, while temperature dependent $μ$SR studies show an anomaly at 8\,K. Overall, our results suggest the presence of two different magnetic environments or domains in LaCaScIrO$_6$, which is likely related to its structural features.

Spin-glass state and reversed magnetic anisotropy induced by Cr doping in the Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

Magnetic properties of the substitution series Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ were investigated to determine the evolution from the anisotropic Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ with $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ magnetic Ru$^{3+}$ ions to the isotropic Heisenberg magnet CrCl$_3$ with $S = 3/2$ magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions. Magnetization measurements on single crystals revealed a reversal of the magnetic anisotropy under doping, which we argue to arise from the competition between anisotropic Kitaev and off-diagonal interactions on the Ru-Ru links and approximately isotropic Cr-Ru and isotropic Cr-Cr interactions. In addition, combined magnetization, ac susceptibility and specific-heat measurements clearly show the destabilization of the long-range magnetic order of $α$-RuCl$_3$ in favor of a spin-glass state of Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Cl$_3$ for a low doping of $x\backsimeq0.1$. The corresponding freezing temperature as a function of Cr content shows a broad maximum around $x\backsimeq0.45$.

The magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated spin chain compound linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, as seen by neutron diffraction and $^1$H-NMR

We report on a detailed neutron diffraction and $^1$H-NMR study on the frustrated spin-1/2 chain material linarite, PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$, where competing ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions lead to frustration. From the magnetic Bragg peak intensity studied down to 60 mK, the magnetic moment per Cu atom is obtained within the whole magnetic phase diagram for $H \parallel b$ axis. Further, we establish the detailed configurations of the shift of the SDW propagation vector in phase V with field and temperature. Finally, combining our neutron diffraction results with those from a low-temperature/high-field NMR study we find an even more complex phase diagram close to the quasi-saturation field suggesting that bound two-magnon excitations are the lowest energy excitations close to and in the quasi-saturation regime. Qualitatively and semi-quantitatively, we relate such behavior to $XYZ$ exchange anisotropy and contributions from the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction to affect the magnetic properties of linarite.

Pressure-induced dimerization and valence bond crystal formation in the Kitaev-Heisenberg magnet alpha-RuCl3

Magnetization and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of the Kitaev-Heisenberg material alpha-RuCl3 reveal a pressure-induced crystallographic and magnetic phase transition at a hydrostatic pressure of p=0.2 GPa. This structural transition into a triclinic phase is characterized by a very strong dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds, accompanied by a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Ab initio quantum-chemistry calculations disclose a pressure-induced enhancement of the direct 4d-4d bonding on particular Ru-Ru links, causing a sharp increase of the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. These combined experimental and computational data show that the Kitaev spin liquid phase in alpha-RuCl3 strongly competes with the crystallization of spin singlets into a valence bond solid.

Thermoelectric power quantum oscillations in the ferromagnet UGe$_2$

We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnet UGe$_2$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. At low temperature, huge quantum oscillations are observed in the thermoelectric power as a function of the magnetic field applied along the $a$ axis. The frequencies of the extreme orbits are determined and an analysis of the cyclotron masses is performed following different theoretical approaches for quantum oscillations detected in the thermoelectric power. They are compared to those obtained by Shubnikov-de Haas experiments on the same crystal and previous de Haas-van Alphen experiments. The agreement of the different probes confirms thermoelectric power as an excellent probe to extract simultaneously both microscopic and macroscopic information on the Fermi-surface properties. Band-structure calculations of UGe$_2$ in the ferromagnetic state are compared to the experiment.
