Dark Matter in a Constrained NMSSM

We explore the parameter space of a Constrained Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with GUT scale boundary conditions (CNMSSM) and find regions where the relic density of the lightest neutralino is compatible with the WMAP measurement. We emphasize differences with the MSSM: cases where annihilation of the LSP occurs via a Higgs resonance at low values of tanβand cases where the LSP has a large singlino component. The particle spectrum as well as theoretical and collider constraints are calculated with NMSSMTools. All neutralino annihilation and coannihilation processes are then computed with micrOMEGAs, taking into account higher order corrections to the Higgs sector.

Cygnus X-3 transition from the ultrasoft to the hard state

Aims: The nature of Cygnus X-3 is still not understood well. This binary system might host a black hole or a neutron star. Recent observations by INTEGRAL have shown that Cygnus X-3 was again in an extremely ultrasoft state. Here we present our analysis of the transition from the ultrasoft state, dominated by blackbody radiation at soft X-rays plus non-thermal emission in the hard X-rays, to the low hard state. Methods: INTEGRAL observed Cyg X-3 six times during three weeks in late May and early June 2007. Data from IBIS/ISGRI and JEM-X1 were analysed to show the spectral transition. Results: During the ultrasoft state, the soft X-ray spectrum is well-described by an absorbed (NH = 1.5E22 1/cm**2) black body model, whereas the X-ray spectrum above 20 keV appears to be extremely low and hard (Gamma = 1.7). During the transition, the radio flux rises to a level of >1 Jy, and the soft X-ray emission drops by a factor of 3, while the hard X-ray emission rises by a factor of 14 and becomes steeper (up to Gamma = 4). Conclusions: The ultrasoft state apparently precedes the emission of a jet, which is apparent in the radio and hard X-ray domain.

The 3rd IBIS/ISGRI soft gamma-ray survey catalog

In this paper we report on the third soft gamma-ray source catalog obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI gamma-ray imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The scientific dataset is based on more than 40 Ms of high quality observations performed during the first three and a half years of Core Program and public IBIS/ISGRI observations. Compared to previous IBIS/ISGRI surveys, this catalog includes a substantially increased coverage of extragalactic fields, and comprises more than 400 high-energy sources detected in the energy range 17-100 keV, including both transients and faint persistent objects which can only be revealed with longer exposure times.

Neutralino dark matter in the MSSM with CP violation

In the MSSM, the presence of CP phases can have a significant impact on the neutralino relic abundance. These phase effectsare on the one hand due to shifts in the masses, on the other hand due to modifications of the couplings. Typical variations in Omega h^2 solely from modifications in the couplings are of order 10%-100%.

CP Studies and Non-Standard Higgs Physics

There are many possibilities for new physics beyond the Standard Model that feature non-standard Higgs sectors. These may introduce new sources of CP violation, and there may be mixing between multiple Higgs bosons or other new scalar bosons. Alternatively, the Higgs may be a composite state, or there may even be no Higgs at all. These non-standard Higgs scenarios have important implications for collider physics as well as for cosmology, and understanding their phenomenology is essential for a full comprehension of electroweak symmetry breaking. This report discusses the most relevant theories which go beyond the Standard Model and its minimal, CP-conserving supersymmetric extension: two-Higgs-doublet models and minimal supersymmetric models with CP violation, supersymmetric models with an extra singlet, models with extra gauge groups or Higgs triplets, Little Higgs models, models in extra dimensions, and models with technicolour or other new strong dynamics. For each of these scenarios, this report presents an introduction to the phenomenology, followed by contributions on more detailed theoretical aspects and studies of possible experimental signatures at the LHC and other colliders.

micrOMEGAs2.0: a program to calculate the relic density of dark matter in a generic model

micrOMEGAs2.0 is a code which calculates the relic density of a stable massive particle in an arbitrary model. The underlying assumption is that there is a conservation law like R-parity in supersymmetry which guarantees the stability of the lightest odd particle. The new physics model must be incorporated in the notation of CalcHEP, a package for the automatic generation of squared matrix elements. Once this is done, all annihilation and coannihilation channels are included automatically in any model. Cross-sections at $v=0$, relevant for indirect detection of dark matter, are also computed automatically. The package includes three sample models: the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the MSSM with complex phases and the NMSSM. Extension to other models, including non supersymmetric models, is described.

GRACE at ONE-LOOP: Automatic calculation of 1-loop diagrams in the electroweak theory with gauge parameter independence checks

We describe the main building blocks of a generic automated package for the calculation of Feynman diagrams. These blocks include the generation and creation of a model file, the graph generation, the symbolic calculation at an intermediate level of the Dirac and tensor algebra, implementation of the loop integrals, the generation of the matrix elements or helicity amplitudes, methods for the phase space integrations and eventually the event generation. The report focuses on the fully automated systems for the calculation of physical processes based on the experience in developing GRACE-loop. As such, a detailed description of the renormalisation procedure in the Standard Model is given emphasizing the central role played by the non-linear gauge fixing conditions for the construction of such automated codes. The need for such gauges is better appreciated when it comes to devising efficient and powerful algorithms for the reduction of the tensorial structures of the loop integrals. A new technique for these reduction algorithms is described. Explicit formulae for all two-point functions in a generalised non-linear gauge are given, together with the complete set of counterterms. We also show how infrared divergences are dealt with in the system. We give a comprehensive presentation of some systematic test-runs which have been performed at the one-loop level for a wide variety of two-to-two processes to show the validity of the gauge check. These cover fermion-fermion scattering, gauge boson scattering into fermions, gauge bosons and Higgs bosons scattering processes. Comparisons with existing results on some one-loop computation in the Standard Model show excellent agreement. We also briefly recount some recent development concerning the calculation of mutli-leg one-loop corrections.

Relic density of neutralino dark matter in the MSSM with CP violation

We calculate the relic density of dark matter in the MSSM with CP violation. We analyse various scenarios of neutralino annihilation: the cases of a bino, bino-wino and bino-Higgsino LSP, annihilation through Higgs, as well as sfermion coannihilation scenarios. Large phase effects are found, on the one hand due to shifts in the masses, on the other hand due to modifications of the couplings. Taking special care to disentangle the effects in masses and couplings, we demonstrate that the presence of CP phases can have a significant influence on the neutralino relic abundance. Typical variations in Ωh^2 solely from modifications in the couplings are O(10%-100%), but can reach an order of magnitude in some cases.

A Multi-Wavelength Study of Sgr A*: The Role of Near-IR Flares in Production of X-ray, Soft $γ$-ray and Sub-millimeter Emission

(abridged) We describe highlights of the results of two observing campaigns in 2004 to investigate the correlation of flare activity in Sgr A* in different wavelength regimes, using a total of nine ground and space-based telescopes. We report the detection of several new near-IR flares during the campaign based on {\it HST} observations. The level of near-IR flare activity can be as low as $\sim0.15$ mJy at 1.6 $μ$m and continuous up to about 40% of the total observing time. Using the NICMOS instrument on the {\it HST}, the {\it XMM-Newton} and CSO observatories, we also detect simultaneous bright X-ray and near-IR flare in which we observe for the first time correlated substructures as well as simultaneous submillimeter and near-IR flaring. X-ray emission is arising from the population of near-IR-synchrotron-emitting relativistic particles which scatter submillimeter seed photons within the inner 10 Schwarzschild radii of Sgr A* up to X-ray energies. In addition, using the inverse Compton scattering picture, we explain the high energy 20-120 keV emission from the direction toward Sgr A*, and the lack of one-to-one X-ray counterparts to near-IR flares, by the variation of the magnetic field and the spectral index distributions of this population of nonthermal particles. In this picture, the evidence for the variability of submillimeter emission during a near-IR flare is produced by the low-energy component of the population of particles emitting synchrotron near-IR emission. Based on the measurements of the duration of flares in near-IR and submillimeter wavelengths, we argue that the cooling could be due to adiabatic expansion with the implication that flare activity may drive an outflow.

Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis: SPA Convention and Project

High-precision analyses of supersymmetry parameters aim at reconstructing the fundamental supersymmetric theory and its breaking mechanism. A well defined theoretical framework is needed when higher-order corrections are included. We propose such a scheme, Supersymmetry Parameter Analysis SPA, based on a consistent set of conventions and input parameters. A repository for computer programs is provided which connect parameters in different schemes and relate the Lagrangian parameters to physical observables at LHC and high energy e+e- linear collider experiments, i.e., masses, mixings, decay widths and production cross sections for supersymmetric particles. In addition, programs for calculating high-precision low energy observables, the density of cold dark matter (CDM) in the universe as well as the cross sections for CDM search experiments are included. The SPA scheme still requires extended efforts on both the theoretical and experimental side before data can be evaluated in the future at the level of the desired precision. We take here an initial step of testing the SPA scheme by applying the techniques involved to a specific supersymmetry reference point.

INTEGRAL/IBIS Extragalactic survey: 20-100 keV selected AGN

Analysis of INTEGRAL Core Program and public Open Time observations performed up to April 2005 provides a sample of 62 active galactic nuclei in the 20-100 keV band above a flux limit of ~1.5x10^-11 erg/cm2/s. Most(42) of the sources in the sample are Seyfert galaxies, almost equally divided between type 1 and 2 objects, 6 are blazars and 14 are still unclassified. Excluding the blazars, the average redshift of our sample is 0.021 while the mean luminosity is Log(L) = 43.45. We find that absorption is present in 65% of the objects with 14% of the total sample due to Compton thick active galaxies. In agreement with both Swift/BAT team results and 2-10 keV studies, the fraction of absorbed objects decreases with the 20-100 keV luminosity. All Seyfert 2s in our sample are absorbed as are 33% of Seyfert 1s. The present data highlight the capability of INTEGRAL to probe the extragalactic gamma-ray sky and to find new and/or absorbed active galaxies.

IGR J17252-3616: an accreting pulsar observed by INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton

The discovery of the X-ray source IGR J17252-3616 by INTEGRAL was reported on 9 February 2004. Regular monitoring by INTEGRAL shows that IGR J17252-3616 is a persistent hard X-ray source with an average count rate of 0.96 counts/s (~6.4 mCrab) in the 20-60 keV energy band. A follow-up observation with XMM-Newton, which was performed on 21 March 21 2004, showed that the source is located at R.A.(2000.0)=17h25m11.4 and Dec.=-36degr16'58.6" with an uncertainty of 4". The only infra-red counterpart to be found within the XMM-Newton error circle was 2MASS J17251139-3616575, which has a Ks-band magnitude of 10.7 and is located 1" away from the XMM-Newton position. The analysis of the combined INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations shows that the source is a binary X-ray pulsar with a spin period of 413.7 s and an orbital period of 9.72 days. The spectrum can be fitted with a flat power law plus an energy cut off (Gamma~0.02,Ecut~8.2 keV) or a Comptonized model (kTe~5.5 keV, tau~7.8). The spectrum also indicates a large hydrogen column density of Nh~15x1e22 atoms/cm-2 suggesting an intrinsic absorption. The Fe Kalpha line at 6.4 keV is clearly detected. Phase-resolved spectroscopy does not show any variation in the continuum except the total emitted flux. The absorption is constant along the pulse phase. This source can be associated with EXO 1722-363 as both systems show common timing and spectral features. The observations suggest that the source is a wind-fed accreting pulsar accompanied by a supergiant star.

Discovery of X-ray eclipses from the transient source CXOGC J174540.0-290031 with XMM-Newton

We present the XMM-Newton observations obtained during four revolutions in Spring and Summer 2004 of CXOGC J174540.0-290031, a moderately bright transient X-ray source, located at only 2.9" from SgrA*. We report the discovery of sharp and deep X-ray eclipses, with a period of 27,961+/-5 s and a duration of about 1,100+/-100 s, observed during the two consecutive XMM revolutions from August 31 to September 2. No deep eclipses were present during the two consecutive XMM revolutions from March 28 to April 1, 2004. The spectra during all four observations are well described with an absorbed power law continuum. While our fits on the power law index over the four observations yield values that are consistent with Gamma=1.6-2.0, there appears to be a significant increase in the column density during the Summer 2004 observations, i.e. the period during which the eclipses are detected. The intrinsic luminosity in the 2-10 keV energy range is almost constant with 1.8-2.3 x 10^34 (d_8kpc)^2 erg/s over the four observations. In the framework of eclipsing semidetached binary systems, we show that the eclipse period constrains the mass of the assumed main-sequence secondary star to less than 1.0 M_odot. Therefore, we deduce that CXOGC J174540.0-290031 is a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Moreover the eclipse duration constrains the mass of the compact object to less than about 60 M_odot, which is consistent with a stellar mass black hole or a neutron star. The absence of deep X-ray eclipses during the Spring 2004 observations could be explained if the centroid of the X-ray emitting region moves from a position on the orbital plane to a point above the compact object, possibly coincident with the base of the jet which was detected in radio at this epoch. Comparison of SUSY spectrum calculations and impact on the relic density constraints from WMAP

We compare results of four public supersymmetric (SUSY) spectrum codes, Isajet, Softsusy, Spheno and Suspect to estimate the present-day uncertainty in the calculation of the relic density of dark matter in mSUGRA models. We find that even for mass differences of about 1% the spread in the obtained relic densities can be 10%. In difficult regions of the parameter space, such as large tan(beta) or large m_0, discrepancies in the relic density are much larger. We also find important differences in the stau co-annihilation region. We show the impact of these uncertainties on the bounds from WMAP for several scenarios, concentrating on the regions of parameter space most relevant for collider phenomenology. We also discuss the case of non-zero A_0 and the stop co-annihilation region. Moreover, we present a web application for the online comparison of the spectrum codes.

Relic density of dark matter in the NMSSM

We present a code to compute the relic density of dark matter in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM). Dominant corrections to the Higgs masses are calculated with NMHDECAY as well as theoretical and collider constraints. All neutralino annihilation and coannihilation processes are then computed with an extended version of micrOMEGAs, taking into acount higher order corrections to Higgs vertices. We explore the parameter space of the NMSSM and consider in particular the case of a bino LSP, of a mixed bino-higgsino LSP and of a singlino LSP. As compared to the MSSM, neutralino annihilation is often more efficient as it can take place via (additional) Higgs resonances as well as annihilation into light Higgs states. Models with a large singlino component can be compatible with WMAP constraints.

The 1 - 50 keV spectral and timing analysis of IGR J18027-2016: an eclipsing, high mass X-ray binary

We report the association of the INTEGRAL source IGR J18027-2016 with the BeppoSAX source SAX J1802.7-2017. IGR J18027-2016 is seen to be a weak, persistent source by the IBIS/ISGRI instrument on board INTEGRAL with an average source count rate of 0.55 counts s^-1 (~6.1 mCrab) in the 20-40 keV band. Timing analysis performed on the ISGRI data identifies an orbital period of 4.5696 +/- 0.0009 days and gives an ephemeris of mid-eclipse as, T{mid} = 52931.37 +/- 0.04 MJD. Re-analysis of archival BeppoSAX data has provided a mass function for the donor star, f(m) = 16 +/- 1 M{sun} and a projected semimajor axis of a{x}sin{i} = 68 +/- 1 lt-s. We conclude that the donor is an OB-supergiant with a mass of 18.8-29.3 M{sun} and a radius of 15.0-23.4 R{sun}. Spectra obtained by XMM-Newton and ISGRI indicate a high hydrogen column density of NH = 6.8 x 10^22 cm^-2, which suggests intrinsic absorption. The source appears to be a high mass X-ray binary with the neutron star emitting X-rays through wind-fed accretion while in an eclipsing orbit around an OB-supergiant.

Relic density of dark matter in mSUGRA and non-universal SUGRA

The measurements of WMAP on the relic density of dark matter strongly constrain supersymmetric models. In mSUGRA where the neutralino LSP is mostly a bino only rather fine-tuned models survive. On the other hand the relic density upper limit can be easily satisfied in models with a Higgsino or wino LSP.
