Quantum mechanics in phase space: First order comparison between the Wigner and the Fermi function

The Fermi g_F(x,p) function provides a phase space description of quantum mechanics conceptually different from that based on the the Wigner function W(x,p). In this paper, we show that for a peaked wave packet the g_F(x,p)=0 curve approximately corresponds to a phase space contour level of the Wigner function and provides a satisfactory description of the wave packet's size and shape. Our results show that the Fermi function is an interesting tool to investigate quantum fluctuations in the semiclassical regime.

Enhancement of transmission rates in quantum memory channels with damping

We consider the transfer of quantum information down a single-mode quantum transmission line. Such quantum channel is modeled as a damped harmonic oscillator, the interaction between the information carriers -a train of N qubits- and the oscillator being of the Jaynes-Cummings kind. Memory effects appear if the state of the oscillator is not reset after each channel use. We show that the setup without resetting is convenient in order to increase the transmission rates, both for the transfer of quantum and classical private information. Our results can be applied to the micromaser.

Semiclassical model for a memory dephasing channel

We study a dephasing channel with memory, described by a Hamiltonian model in which the system-environment interaction is described by a stochastic process. We propose a useful way to describe the channel uses correlations. Moreover, we give a general expression for the coherences decay factors as a function of the number of channel uses and of the stochastic process power spectrum. We also study the impact of memory on the three qubit code, showing that correlations among channel uses affect very little the code performance.

Memory effects in quantum information transmission across a Hamiltonian dephasing channel

We study a dephasing channel with memory, modelled by a multimode environment of oscillators. Focusing on the case of two channel uses, we show that memory effects can enhance the amount of coherent quantum information transmitted down the channel. We also show the Kraus representation for two channel uses. Finally, we propose a coding-decoding scheme that takes advantage of memory to improve the fidelity of transmission.

Statistical properties of eigenvalues for an operating quantum computer with static imperfections

We investigate the transition to quantum chaos, induced by static imperfections, for an operating quantum computer that simulates efficiently a dynamical quantum system, the sawtooth map. For the different dynamical regimes of the map, we discuss the quantum chaos border induced by static imperfections by analyzing the statistical properties of the quantum computer eigenvalues. For small imperfection strengths the level spacing statistics is close to the case of quasi-integrable systems while above the border it is described by the random matrix theory. We have found that the border drops exponentially with the number of qubits, both in the ergodic and quasi-integrable dynamical regimes of the map characterized by a complex phase space structure. On the contrary, the regime with integrable map dynamics remains more stable against static imperfections since in this case the border drops only algebraically with the number of qubits.

Disordered Hubbard Model with Attraction: Coupling Energy of Cooper Pairs in Small Clusters

We generalize the Cooper problem to the case of many interacting particles in the vicinity of the Fermi level in the presence of disorder. On the basis of this approach we study numerically the variation of the pair coupling energy in small clusters as a function of disorder. We show that the Cooper pair energy is strongly enhanced by disorder, which at the same time leads to the localization of pairs.

Chaotic enhancement of hydrogen atoms excitation in magnetic and microwave fields

We numerically investigate multiphoton ionization of excited hydrogen atoms in magnetic and microwave fields when up to 600 photons are required for ionization. The analytical estimates for the quantum localization length in the classically chaotic regime are in agreement with numerical data. The excitation is much stronger as compared to the case with microwave field only due to the chaotic structure of eigenstates in magnetic field.
