Coulomb Correlations and Orbital Polarization in the Metal Insulator Transition of VO_2

The quasi-particle spectra in the metallic rutile and insulating monoclinic phases of VO$_2$ are shown to be dominated by local Coulomb interactions. In the rutile phase the small orbital polarization among V 3d t_2g states leads to weak static but strong dynamical correlations. In the monoclinic phase the large 3d orbital polarization caused by the V--V Peierls distortion gives rise to strong static correlations which are shown to be the primary cause of the insulating behavior.

Rashba Effect at Magnetic Metal Surfaces

We give experimental and theoretical evidence of the Rashba effect at the magnetic rare-earth metal surface Gd(0001). The Rashba effect is substantially enhanced and the Rashba parameter changes its sign when a metal-oxide surface layer is formed. The experimental observations are quantitatively described by ab initio calculations that give a detailed account of the near-surface charge density gradients causing the Rashba effect. Since the sign of the Rashba splitting depends on the magnetization direction, the findings open up new opportunities for the study of surface and interface magnetism.

Interface properties of the NiMnSb/InP and NiMnSb/GaAs contacts

We study the electronic and magnetic properties of the interfaces between the half-metallic Heusler alloy NiMnSb and the binary semiconductors InP and GaAs using two different state-of-the-art full-potential \textit{ab-initio} electronic structure methods. Although in the case of most NiMnSb/InP(001) contacts the half-metallicity is lost, it is possible to keep a high degree of spin-polarization when the interface is made up by Ni and P layers. In the case of the GaAs semiconductor the larger hybridization between the Ni-$d$ and As-$p$ orbitals with respect to the hybridization between the Ni-$d$ and P-$p$ orbitals destroys this polarization. The (111) interfaces present strong interface states but also in this case there are few interfaces presenting a high spin-polarization at the Fermi level which can reach values up to 74%.

Exchange parameters in Fe-based molecular magnets

The calculation of interatomic magnetic exchange interactions entering the Heisenberg model from the standpoint of the density functional theory (DFT) is outlined for two Fe-based molecular magnets: a trinuclear complex with a Schiff base ligand, which makes an antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated system, and a model bipyrimidine-connected planar network of Fe ions. First-principles electronic structure calculations are performed using the real-space method Siesta and the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave FLAPW method FLEUR, correspondingly. We discuss the application of fixed spin moment technique for preparing the system in a given magnetic configuration, and the effect of intraatomic Coulomb correlation, approximated by the LDA+U technique, on the values of interaction parameters.

The role of the spin in quasiparticle interference

Quasiparticle interference patterns measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can be used to study the local electronic structure of metal surfaces and high temperature superconductors. Here, we show that even in non-magnetic systems the spin of the quasiparticles can have a profound effect on the interference patterns. On Bi(110), where the surface state bands are not spin-degenerate, the patterns are not related to the dispersion of the electronic states in a simple way. In fact, the features which are expected for the spin-independent situation are absent and the observed interference patterns can only be interpreted by taking spin-conserving scattering events into account.

Strong spin-orbit splitting on Bi surfaces

Using first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission, we show that the spin-orbit interaction leads to a strong splitting of the surface state bands on low-index surfaces of Bi. The dispersion of the states and the corresponding Fermi surfaces are profoundly modified in the whole surface Brillouin zone. We discuss the implications of these findings with respect to a proposed surface charge density wave on Bi(111) as well as to the surface screening, surface spin-density waves, electron (hole) dynamics in surface states, and to possible applications to the spintronics.

Broken-Bond Rule for the Surface Energies of Noble Metals

Using two different full-potential ab-initio techniques we introduce a simple, universal rule based on the number of broken first-neighbor bonds to determine the surface energies of the three noble metals Cu, Ag and Au. When a bond is broken, the rearrangement of the electronic charge for these metals does not lead to a change of the remaining bonds. Thus the energy needed to break a bond is independent of the surface orientation. This novel finding can lead to the development of simple models to describe the energetics of a surface like step and kink formation, crystal growth, alloy formation, equilibrium shape of mesoscopic crystallites and surface faceting.
