Finite voltage shot noise in normal-metal - superconductor junctions

We express the low-frequency shot noise in a disordered normal-metal - superconductor (NS) junction at finite (subgap) voltage in terms of the normal scattering amplitudes and the Andreev reflection amplitude. In the multichannel limit, the conductance exhibits resonances which are accompanied by an enhancement of the (differential) shot noise. In the study of multichannel single and double barrier junctions we discuss the noise properties of coherent transport at low versus high voltage with respect to the Andreev level spacing.

Comment on "Orbital Paramagnetism of Electrons in Proximity to a Superconductor"

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5782 (1998)], Bruder and Imry address the reentrance effect in proximity coupled normal-metal coated superconducting cylinders discovered by Mota et al. and challenging theoretical understanding to date. At stake is the explanation of a low-temperature paramagnetic reentrance of order unity. The authors claim to find a `significant paramagnetic effect' which they strongly relate to the layout and findings of the experiment. Here, we show that the straightforward calculation of the paramagnetic change in the susceptibility along the lines of their analysis is by several orders of magnitude smaller than experimentally observed.

Diffusion and Creep of a Particle in a Random Potential

We investigate the diffusive motion of an overdamped classical particle in a 1D random potential using the mean first-passage time formalism and demonstrate the efficiency of this method in the investigation of the large-time dynamics of the particle. We determine the $log$-time diffusion ${<{< x^{2}(t)>}_{th}>}_{dis}=A\ln^β \left ({t}/{t_{r}})$ and relate the prefactor $A,$ the relaxation time $t_{r},$ and the exponent $β$ to the details of the (generally non-gaussian) long-range correlated potential. Calculating the moments ${<{< t^{n}>}_{th}>}_{dis}$ of the first-passage time distribution $P(t),$ we reconstruct the large time distribution function itself and draw attention to the phenomenon of intermittency. The results can be easily interpreted in terms of the decay of metastable trapped states. In addition, we present a simple derivation of the mean velocity of a particle moving in a random potential in the presence of a constant external force.

Numerical study of vortex matter using the Bose model: First-order melting and entanglement

We present an extensive numerical study of vortex matter using the mapping to 2D bosons and Path-Integral Monte Carlo simulations. We find a first-order vortex lattice melting transition into an entangled vortex liquid. The jumps in entropy and density are consistent with experimental results on YBCO. The liquid is denser than the lattice and has a correlation length l_z approx 1.7 epsilon a_0 in the direction parallel to the field. In the language of bosons we find a sharp quantum phase transition from a Wigner crystal to a superfluid, even in the case of logarithmic interaction. We also measure the excitation spectrum of the Bose system and find the roton minimum to be insensitive to the range of the interaction.

Thermally activated Hall creep of flux lines from a columnar defect

We analyse the thermally activated depinning of an elastic string (line tension $ε$) governed by Hall dynamics from a columnar defect modelled as a cylindrical potential well of depth $V_{0}$ for the case of a small external force $F.$ An effective 1D field Hamiltonian is derived in order to describe the 2D string motion. At high temperatures the decay rate is proportional to $F^{{5}/{2}}T^{-{1}/{2}} \exp{\left [{F_{0}}/{F}-{U(F)}/{T}\right ]},$ with $F_{0}$ a constant of order of the critical force and $U(F) \sim{\left ({εV_{0}})}^{{1}/{2}}{V_{0}/{F}}$ the activation energy. The results are applied to vortices pinned by columnar defects in superclean superconductors.

Quantum depinning of a pancake-vortex from a columnar defect

We consider the problem of the depinning of a weakly driven ($F\ll F_{c}$) pancake vortex from a columnar defect in a Josephson-coupled superconductor, where $F$ denotes the force acting on the vortex ($F_{c}$ is the critical force). The dynamics of the vortex is supposed to be of the Hall type. The Euclidean action $S_{Eucl}(T)$ is calculated in the entire temperature range; the result is universal and does not depend on the detailed form of the pinning potential. We show that the transition from quantum to classical behavior is second-order like with the temperature $T_{c}$ of the transition scaling like $F^{{4}/{3}}.$ Special attention is paid to the regime of applicability of our results, in particular, the influence of the large vortex mass appearing in the superclean limit is discussed.

(4+N)-Dimensional Elastic Manifolds in Random Media: a Renormalization-Group Analysis

Motivated by the problem of weak collective pinning of vortex lattices in high-temperature superconductors, we study the model system of a four-dimensional elastic manifold with N transverse degrees of freedom (4+N-model) in a quenched disorder environment. We assume the disorder to be weak and short-range correlated, and neglect thermal effects. Using a real-space functional renormalization group (FRG) approach, we derive a RG equation for the pinning-energy correlator up to two-loop correction. The solution of this equation allows us to calculate the size R_c of collectively pinned elastic domains as well as the critical force F_c, i.e., the smallest external force needed to drive these domains. We find R_c prop. to delta_p^alpha_2 exp(alpha_1/delta_p) and F_c prop. to delta_p^(-2 alpha_2) exp(-2 alpha_1/delta_p), where delta_p <<1 parametrizes the disorder strength, alpha_1=(2/pi)^(N/2) 8 pi^2/(N+8), and alpha_2=2(5N+22)/(N+8)^2. In contrast to lowest-order perturbation calculations which we briefly review, we thus arrive at determining both alpha_1 (one-loop) and alpha_2 (two-loop).

Characteristics of First-Order Vortex Lattice Melting: Jumps in Entropy and Magnetization

We derive expressions for the jumps in entropy and magnetization characterizing the first-order melting transition of a flux line lattice. In our analysis we account for the temperature dependence of the Landau parameters and make use of the proper shape of the melting line as determined by the relative importance of electromagnetic and Josephson interactions. The results agree well with experiments on anisotropic Y$_1$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and layered Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_1$Cu$_2$O$_8$ materials and reaffirm the validity of the London model.

Decay of Metastable States: Sharp Transition from Quantum to Classical Behavior

The decay rate of metastable states is determined at high temperatures by thermal activation, whereas at temperatures close to zero quantum tunneling is relevant. At some temperature $T_{c}$ the transition from classical to quantum-dominated decay occurs. The transition can be first-order like, with a discontinuous first derivative of the Euclidean action, or smooth with only a second derivative developing a jump. In the former case the crossover temperature $T_{c}$ cannot be calculated perturbatively and must be found as the intersection point of the Euclidean actions calculated at low and high temperatures. In this paper we present a sufficient criterion for a first-order transition in tunneling problems and apply it to the problem of the tunneling of strings. It is shown that the problem of the depinning of a massive string from a linear defect in the presence of an arbitrarily strong dissipation exhibits a first-order transition.

Nonlinearity in NS transport: scattering matrix approach

A general formula for the current through a disordered normal--superconducting junction is derived, which is valid at finite temperature and includes the full voltage dependence. The result depends on a multichannel scattering matrix, which describes elastic scattering in the normal region, and accounts for the Andreev scattering at the NS interface. The symmetry of the current with respect to sign reversal in the subgap regime is discussed. The Andreev approximation is used to derive a spectral conductance formula, which applies to voltages both below and above the gap. In a case study the spectral conductance formula is applied to the problem of an NINIS double barrier junction.

Strong Pinning and Plastic Deformations of the Vortex Lattice

We investigate numerically the dynamically generated plastic deformations of a 3D vortex lattice (VL) driven through a disorder potential with isolated, strong pinning centers (point-like or extended along the field direction). We find that the VL exhibits a very peculiar dynamical behavior in the plastic flow regime, in particular, topological excitations consisting of three or four entangled vortices are formed. We determine the critical current density $j_c$ and the activation energy for depinning $U_c$ in the presence of a finite density of strong pinning centers.
