Disorder effects in diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors

Carrier induced ferromagnetism in diluted III-V semi-conductor is analyzed within a two step approach. First, within a single site CPA formalism, we calculate the element resolved averaged Green's function of the itinerant carrier. Then using a generalized RKKY formula we evaluate the Mn-Mn long-range exchange integrals and the Curie temperature as a function of the exchange parameter, magnetic impurity concentration and carrier density. The effect of the disorder (impurity scattering) appears to play a crucial role. The standard RKKY calculation (no scattering processes), strongly underestimate the Curie temperature and is inappropriate to describe magnetism in diluted magnetic semi-conductors. It is also shown that an antiferromagnetic exchange favors higher Curie temperature.

RPA-CPA theory for magnetism in disordered Heisenberg binary systems with long range exchange integrals

We present a theory based on Green's function formalism to study magnetism in disordered Heisenberg systems with long range exchange integrals. Disordered Green's function are decoupled within Tyablicov scheme and solved with a CPA method. The CPA method is the extension of Blackmann-Esterling-Beck approach to system with environmental disorder term which uses cumulant summation of the single-site non crossing diagrams. The crucial point is that we are able to treat simultaneously and self-consistently the RPA and CPA loops. It is shown that the summation of s-scattering contribution can always be performed analytically. While the p,d,f .. contributions are difficult to handle in the case of long-range coupling. To overcome this difficulty we propose and provide a test of a simplified treatment of these terms. In the case of 3D disordered nearest-neighbor Heisenberg system, a good agreement between the simplified treatment and the full calculation is achieved. Our theory allows in particular to calculate the Curie temperature, the spectral functions and the temperature dependence of the magnetization of each constituant as a function of concentration of impurity. Additionally it is shown that a virtual crystal treatment fails even at low impurity concentration

Carrier induced ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semi-conductors

We present a theory for carrier induced ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semi-conductor (DMS). Our approach treats on equal footing quantum fluctuations within the RPA approximation and disorder within CPA. This method allows for the calculation of $T_c$, magnetization and magnon spectrum as a function of hole, impurity concentration and temperature. It is shown that, sufficiently close to $T_c$, and within our decoupling scheme (Tyablicov type) the CPA for the itinerant electron gas reduces to the Virtual Crystal Approximation. This allows, in the low impurity concentration and low density of carriers to provide analytical expression for $T_c$. For illustration, we consider the case of $Ga_{1-c}Mn_{c}As$ and compare our results with available experimental data.

Theory for two-photon photoemission: transport and temperature effects

Using a theory which treats on equal footing transport of excited electrons and electron-phonon scattering, we are able to explain the temperature dependence of the relaxation time in Cu as recently observed by Petek, Nagano, and Ogawa. We show that the unexpected increase of the relaxation time with temperature results from the drastic change of the electron motion due to the efficiency of electron-phonon scattering: the transport is ballistic at low temperature and gets diffusive at room temperature. Finally, our theory also reproduces the experimental measurements of the two-photon photoemission (2PPE) intensity as a function of the pump-probe delay.

Dynamics of Excited Electrons in Copper: Role of Auger Electrons

Within a theoretical model based on the Boltzmann equation, we analyze in detail the structure of the unusual peak recently observed in the relaxation time in Cu. In particular, we discuss the role of Auger electrons in the electron dynamics and its dependence on the d-hole lifetime, the optical transition matrix elements and the laser pulse duration. We find that the Auger contribution to the distribution is very sensitive to both the d-hole lifetime tau_h and the laser pulse duration tau_l and can be expressed as a monotonic function of tau_l/tau_h. We have found that for a given tau_h, the Auger contribution is significantly smaller for a short pulse duration than for a longer one. We show that the relaxation time at the peak depends linearly on the d-hole lifetime, but interestingly not on the amount of Auger electrons generated. We provide a simple expression for the relaxation time of excited electrons which shows that its shape can be understood by a phase space argument and its amplitude is governed by the d-hole lifetime. We also find that the height of the peak depends on both the ratio of the optical transition matrix elements R=|M_{d \to sp}|^2/|M_{sp \to sp}|^2 and the laser pulse duration. Assuming a reasonable value for the ratio, namely R = 2, and a d-hole lifetime of tau_h=35 fs, we obtain for the calculated height of the peak Delta tau_{th}=14 fs, in fair agreement with Delta tau_{exp} \approx 17 fs measured for polycrystalline Cu.

Minimal model to describe the magnetism of $CuGeO_{3}$

We show that to describe properly the low energy excitations of $CuGeO_{3}$ one must include the effects of a transverse antiferromagnetic coupling, which is estimated to be $J_{\perp}=0.15 J$. Owing to this coupling the frustration in the chains is significantly lower than recent 1D estimates based on purely one-dimensional arguments, we find $J_{2}=0.2 J$. Furthermore we have found a strong modulation of the nearest neighbour coupling due to the static distortion $δ= 0.065$, which is 5 times higher than that previously deduced from a 1D chain approach. Our set of parameters gives, i) a value of the distorsion which agreeswell with some recent estimate for a lower bound, we are able to perfectly reproduce ii)the dispersions, iii) the experimental susceptibility at both high and low temperatures. By performing DMRG calculations for 2 coupled chains we have analysed the effect of the transverse coupling on the ratio of singlet to triplet gaps. The ratio is very sensitive to the parameters and the universality reported in the strict one dimensional case is lost. As an additional point, we provide a simple picture to explain the interesting new feature observed in recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments: the existence of a second branch of excitations.

Elementary Excitations in Dimerized and Frustrated Heisenberg Chains

We present a detailed numerical analysis of the low energy excitation spectrum of a frustrated and dimerized spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain. In particular, we show that in the commensurate spin--Peierls phase the ratio of the singlet and triplet excitation gap is a universal function which depends on the frustration parameter only. We identify the conditions for which a second elementary triplet branch in the excitation spectrum splits from the continuum. We compare our results with predictions from the continuum limit field theory . We discuss the relevance of our data in connection with recent experiments on $CuGeO_{3}$, $NaV_2O_5$, and $(VO)_2P_2O_7$.

A new model to describe the physics of VOPO

In the past different models for the magnetic salt vanadyl pyrophosphate (VOPO) were discussed. Neither a spin ladder nor an alternating chain are capable to describe recently measured magnetic excitations. In this paper we propose a 2D model that fits better to experimental observations.

Bound-states in dimerized and frustrated Heisenberg Chains

Using the Bond Operator Technique (BOT), we have studied the low energy excitationspectrum of a frustrated dimerized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we have compared our analytical results with previous Exact Diagonalizations (ED) data. Qualitatively, the BOT results are in good agreement with the ED data. And even a very good quantitative agreement is obtained in some parameter region. It is clearly shown that there is only one elementary excitation branch (lowest triplet branch) and that the two other well defined excitations which appear below the continuum, one singlet and one triplet, are bound states of two elementary triplets.

On the Incommensurate Phase in Modulated Heisenberg Chains

Using the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) we calculate the magnetization of frustrated S=1/2 Heisenberg chains for various modulation patterns of the nearest neighbour coupling: commensurate, incommensurate with sinusoidal modulation and incommensurate with solitonic modulation. We focus on the order of the phase transition from the commensurate dimerized phase (D) to the incommensurate phase (I). It is shown that the order of the phase transition depends sensitively on the model. For the solitonic model in particular, a $k$-dependent elastic energy modifies the order of the transition. Furthermore, we calculate gaps in the incommensurate phase in adiabatic approximation.

Magnetic Excitations in the Spin-Peierls System $CuGeO_3$

We have calculated the magnetic excitation spectrum in frustrated and dimerized spin 1/2 Heisenberg chains for model parameters which describe the thermodynamics and low frequency spin dynamics in the spin--Peierls system $CuGeO_{3}$. As a test the chosen model is found to reproduce the lowest Raman excitation energy near $30 cm^{-1}$ in the dimerized phase. We establish the elementary triplet and singlet excitation branches below the continuum and estimate the interchain coupling effects on the dimerization parameter.

Persistent Currents in 1D Disordered Rings of Interacting Electrons

We calculate the persistent current of 1D rings of spinless fermions with short-range interactions on a lattice with up to 20 sites, and in the presence of disorder, for various band fillings. We find that {\it both} disorder and interactions always decrease the persistent current by localizing the electrons. Away from half-filling, the interaction has a much stronger influence in the presence of disorder than in the pure case.
