Linear pair creation damping of high frequency plasma oscillation

We have studied the linear dispersion relation for Langmuir waves in plasmas of very high density, based on the Dirac-Heisenberg-Wigner formalism. The vacuum contribution to the physical observables leads to ultra-violet divergences, that are removed by a charge renormalization. The remaining vacuum contribution is small, and is in agreement with previously derived expressions for the time-dependent vacuum polarization. The main new feature of the theory is a damping mechanism similar to Landau damping, but where the plasmon energy give rise to creation of electron-positron pairs. The dependence of the damping rate (pair-creation rate) on wave-number, temperature, and density is analyzed. Finally, the analytical results of linearized theory are compared.

Ultrafast Electron Holes in Plasma Phase Space Dynamics

Electron holes (EH) are localized modes in plasma kinetic theory which appear as vortices in phase space. Earlier research on EH is based on the Schamel distribution function (df). A novel distribution function is proposed here, generalizing the original Schamel df in a recursive manner. Nonlinear solutions obtained by kinetic simulations are presented, with velocities twice the electron thermal speed. Using 1D-1V kinetic simulations, their propagation characteristics are traced and their stability is established by studying their long-time evolution and their behavior through mutual collisions.

Relativistic kinetic theory for spin-1/2 particles: Conservation laws, thermodynamics, and linear waves

We study a recently derived fully relativistic kinetic model for spin-1/2 particles. Firstly, the full set of conservation laws for energy, momentum and angular momentum are given, together with an expression for the (non-symmetric) stress-energy tensor. Next, the thermodynamic equilibrium distribution is given in different limiting cases. Furthermore, we address the analytical complexity that arises when the spin- and momentum eigenfunctions are coupled in linear theory, by calculating the linear dispersion relation for such a case. Finally, we discuss the model and give some context by comparing with potentially relevant phenomena that are not included, such as radiation reaction and vacuum polarization.

Scattering of electron holes in the context of ion-acoustic regime

Mutual collisions between ion-acoustic (IA) solitary waves are studied based on a fully kinetic simulation approach. Two cases, small and large relative velocity, are studied and the effect of trapped electron population on the collision process are focused upon. It is shown that, for the case of small relative velocity, the repelling force between the trapped populations of electrons results in scattering of electron holes. However, this phenomenon can not be witnessed if the relative velocity is considerably high, since the impact of trapped population stays very weak.

Head-on collision of nonlinear solitary solutions to Vlasov-Poisson equations

Nonlinear solitary solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson set of equations are studied in order to investigate their stability by employing a fully-kinetic simulation approach. The study is carried out in the ion-acoustic regime for a collisionless, electrostatic and Maxwellian electron-ion plasma. The trapped population of electrons is modeled based on well-known Schamel distribution function. Head-on mutual collisions of nonlinear solutions are performed in order to examine their collisional stability. The findings include three major aspects: (I) These nonlinear solutions are found to be divided into three categories based on their Mach numbers, i.e. stable, semi-stable and unstable. Semi-stable solutions indicates a smooth transition from stable to unstable solutions for increasing Mach number. (II) The stability of solutions is traced back to a condition imposed on averaged velocities, i.e. net neutrality. It is shown that a bipolar structure is produced in the flux of electrons, early in the temporal evolution. This bipolar structure acts as the seed of the net-neutrality instability, which tips off the energy balance of nonlinear solution during collisions. As the Mach number increases, the amplitude of bipolar structure grows and results in a stronger instability. (III) It is established that during mutual collisions, a merging process of electron holes can happen to a variety of degrees, based on their velocity characteristics. Specifically, the number of rotations of electron holes around each other (in the merging phase) varies. Furthermore, it is observed that in case of a non-integer number of rotations, two electron holes exchange their phase space cores.

A study of the stability properties of Sagdeev solutions in the ion-acoustic regime using kinetic simulations

The Sagdeev pseudo-potential approach has been employed extensively in theoretical studies to determine large-amplitude (fully) nonlinear solutions in a variety of multi-species plasmas. Although these solutions are repeatedly considered as solitary waves (and even solitons), their temporal stability has never been proven. In this paper, a numerical study of the Vlasov-Poisson system is made to follow their temporal evolution in the presence of numerical noise and thereby test their long-time propagation stability. Considering the ion-acoustic regime, both constituents of the plasma, i.e. electrons and ions are treated following their distribution functions in these set of fully kinetic simulations. The findings reveal that the stability of Sagdeev solution depends on a combination of two parameters, i.e. velocity and trapping parameter. It is shown that there exists a critical value of trapping parameter for both fast and slow solutions which separates the stable from unstable solutions. In case of stable solutions, it is shown that these nonlinear structures can propagate for long periods, which confirms their status as solitary waves. Stable solutions are reported for both Maxwellian and Kappa distribution functions. For unstable solutions, it is demonstrated that the instability causes the Sagdeev solution to decay by emitting ion-acoustic wave-packets on its propagation trail. The instability is shown to take place in a large range of velocity and even for Sagdeev solutions with velocity much higher than ion sound speed. Besides, in order to validate our simulation code two precautionary measures are taken. Firstly, the well-known effect of the ion dynamics on a stationary electron hole solution is presented as a benchmarking test of the approach. Secondly, In order to verify the numerical accuracy of the simulations, the conservation of energy and entropy are presented.

The transition from the classical to the quantum regime in nonlinear Landau damping

Starting from the Wigner-Moyal equation coupled to Poisson's equation, a simplified set of equations describing nonlinear Landau damping of Langmuir waves is derived. This system is studied numerically, with a particular focus on the transition from the classical to the quantum regime. In the quantum regime several new features are found. This includes a quantum modified bounce frequency, and the discovery that bounce-like amplitude oscillations can take place even in the absence of trapped particles. The implications of our results are discussed.

On the contribution of exchange interactions to the Vlasov equation

Exchange effects play an important role in determining the equilibrium properties of dense matter systems, as well as for magnetic phenomena. There exists an extensive literature concerning, e.g., the effects of exchange interactions on the equation of state of dense matter. Here, a generalization of the Vlasov equation to include exchange effects is presented allowing for electromagnetic mean fields, thus incorporating some of the dynamic effects due to the exchange interactions. Treating the exchange term perturbatively, the correction to classical Langmuir waves in plasmas is found, and the results are compared with previous work. It is noted that the relative importance of exchange effects scales similarly with density and temperature as particle dispersive effects, but that the overall magnitude is sensitive to the details of the specific problem. The implications of our results are discussed.

Exchange effects in plasmas: the case of low-frequency dynamics

Recently, there has been a surge in the interest of non-equilibrium collective quantum models, where particle dispersion and spin are examples of effects taken into account. Here, we derive a kinetic plasma model con- taining fermion exchange effects. Exchange interactions are of great importance in many systems, and have no classical analogy. Our model therefore constitute a possible probe of collective quantum phenomena in new regimes. As an example, we consider the influence of exchange effect on low frequency dynamics, in partic- ular ion acoustic waves. Comparisons to related computational techniques are given and the differences are highlighted. Furthermore, we discuss the applicability of our model, its limitations and possible extensions.

A Scalar Wigner Theory for Polarized Light in Nonlinear Kerr Media

A scalar Wigner distribution function for describing polarized light is proposed in analogy with the treatment of spin variables in quantum kinetic theory. The formalism is applied to the propagation of circularly polarized light in nonlinear Kerr media and an extended phase space evolution equation is derived along with invariant quantities. We further consider modulation instability as well as the extension to partially coherent fields.

Particle-in-Cell simulations of electron spin effects in plasmas

We have here developed a particle-in-cell code accounting for the magnetic dipole force and for the magnetization currents associated with the electron spin. The electrons is divided into spin-up and spin-down populations relative to the magnetic field, where the magnetic dipole force acts in opposite directions for the two species. To validate the code, we have studied the wakefield generation by an electromagnetic pulse propagating parallel to an external magnetic field. The properties of the generated wakefield is shown to be in good quantitative agreement with previous theoretical results. Generalizations of the code to account for more quantum effects is discussed

Proton acceleration by circularly polarized traveling electromagnetic wave

The acceleration of charged particles, producing collimated mono-energetic beams, over short distances holds the promise to offer new tools in medicine and diagnostics. Here, we consider a possible mechanism for accelerating protons to high energies by using a phase-modulated circularly polarized electromagnetic wave propagating along a constant magnetic field. It is observed that a plane wave with dimensionless amplitude of 0.1 is capable to accelerate a 1 KeV proton to 386 MeV under optimum conditions. Finally we discuss possible limitations of the acceleration scheme.

Semi-relativistic effects in spin-1/2 quantum plasmas

Emerging possibilities for creating and studying novel plasma regimes, e.g. relativistic plasmas and dense systems, in a controlled laboratory environment also requires new modeling tools for such systems. This brings motivation for theoretical studies of the kinetic theory governing the dynamics of plasmas for which both relativistic and quantum effects occur simultaneously. Here, we investigate relativistic corrections to the Pauli Hamiltonian in the context of a scalar kinetic theory for spin-1/2 quantum plasmas. In particular, we formulate a quantum kinetic theory that takes such effects as spin-orbit coupling and Zitterbewegung into account for the collective motion of electrons. We discuss the implications and possible applications of our findings.

Nonlinear wave interaction and spin models in the MHD regime

Here we consider the influence on the electron spin in the MHD regime. Recently developed models which include spin-velocity correlations are taken as a starting point. A theoretical argument is presented, suggesting that in the MHD regime a single fluid electron model with spin correlations is equivalent to a model with spin-up and spin-down electrons constituting different fluids, but where the spin-velocity correlations are omitted. Three wave interaction of 2 shear Alfven waves and a compressional Alfven wave is then taken as a model problem to evaluate the asserted equivalence. The theoretical argument turns out to be supported, as the predictions of the two models agree completely. Furthermore, the three wave coupling coefficients obey the Manley-Rowe relations, which give further support to the soundness of the models and the validity of the assumptions made in the derivation. Finally we point out that the proposed two-fluid model can be incorporated in standard Particle-In-Cell schemes with only minor modifications.

Wakefield generation in magnetized plasmas

We consider wakefield generation in plasmas by electromagnetic pulses propagating perpendicular to a strong magnetic field, in the regime where the electron cyclotron frequency is equal to or larger than the plasma frequency. PIC-simulations reveal that for moderate magnetic field strengths previous results are re-produced, and the wakefield wavenumber spectrum has a clear peak at the inverse skin depth. However, when the cyclotron frequency is significantly larger than the plasma frequency, the wakefield spectrum becomes broad-band, and simultaneously the loss rate of the driving pulse is much enhanced. A set of equations for the scalar and vector potentials reproducing these results are derived, using only the assumption of a weakly nonlinear interaction.

Fast electrochemical doping due to front instability in organic semiconductors

The electrochemical doping transformation in organic semiconductor devices is studied in application to light-emitting cells. It is shown that the device performance can be significantly improved by utilizing new fundamental properties of the doping process. We obtain an instability, which distorts the doping fronts and increases the doping rate considerably. We explain the physical mechanism of the instability, develop theory, provide experimental evidence, and perform numerical simulations. We further show how improved device design can amplify the instability thus leading to a much faster doping process and device kinetics.

The ponderomotive force due to the intrinsic spin in extended fluid and kinetic models

In this paper we calculate the contribution to the ponderomotive force in a plasma from the electron spin using a recently developed model. The spin-fluid model used in the present paper contains spin-velocity correlations, in contrast to previous models used for the same purpose. Is its then found that previous terms for the spin-ponderomotive force are recovered, but also that additional terms appear. Furthermore, the results due to the spin-velocity correlations are confirmed using the spin-kinetic theory. The significance of our results is discussed.

Generation of wakefields by whistlers in spin quantum magnetoplasmas

The excitation of electrostatic wakefields in a magnetized spin quantum plasma by the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive force (CPF and SPF, respectively) due to whistler waves is reported. The nonlinear dynamics of the whistlers and the wakefields is shown to be governed by a coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and driven Boussinesq-like equations. It is found that the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential introduces two characteristic length scales, which lead to the excitation of multiple wakefields in a strongly magnetized dense plasma (with a typical magnetic field strength $B_{0}\gtrsim10^{9}$ T and particle density $n_{0}\gtrsim10^{36}$ m$^{-3}$), where the SPF strongly dominates over the CPF. In other regimes, namely $B_{0}\lesssim10^{8}$ T and $\ n_{0}\lesssim10^{35}$ m$^{-3}$, where the SPF is comparable to the CPF, a plasma wakefield can also be excited self-consistently with one characteristic length scale. Numerical results reveal that the wakefield amplitude is enhanced by the quantum tunneling effect, however it is lowered by the external magnetic field. Under appropriate conditions, the wakefields can maintain high coherence over multiple plasma wavelengths and thereby accelerate electrons to extremely high energies. The results could be useful for particle acceleration at short scales, i.e. at nano- and micrometer scales, in magnetized dense plasmas where the driver is the whistler wave instead of a laser or a particle beam.
