Non-perturbative renormalization of quark bilinear operators with Nf=2 (tmQCD) Wilson fermions and the tree-level improved gauge action

We present results for the renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators obtained by using the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action and the Nf=2 twisted mass fermion action at maximal twist, which guarantees automatic O(a)-improvement. Our results are also relevant for the corresponding standard (un-twisted) Wilson fermionic action since the two actions only differ, in the massless limit, by a chiral rotation of the quark fields. The scale-independent renormalization constants ZV, ZA and the ratio ZP/ZS have been computed using the RI-MOM approach, as well as other alternative methods. For ZA and ZP/ZS, the latter are based on both standard twisted mass and Osterwalder-Seiler fermions, while for ZV a Ward Identity has been used. The quark field renormalization constant Zq and the scale dependent renormalization constants ZS, ZP and ZT are determined in the RI-MOM scheme. Leading discretization effects of O(g^2 a^2), evaluated in one-loop perturbation theory, are explicitly subtracted from the RI-MOM estimates.

Matrix Model and beta-deformed N=4 SYM

This work is the result of the ideas developed by Ken Yoshida about the possibility of extending the range of applications of the matrix model approach to the computation of the holomorphic superpotential of the beta-deformed N=4 super Yang-Mills theory both in the presence of a mass term and in the massless limit. Our formulae, while agreeing with all the existing results we can compare with, are valid also in the case of spontaneously broken gauge symmetry. We dedicate this paper to the memory of Ken, an unforgettable friend for all of us and a great scientist.

Light Meson Physics from Maximally Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

We present a comprehensive investigation of light meson physics using maximally twisted mass fermions for two mass-degenerate quark flavours. By employing four values of the lattice spacing, spatial lattice extents ranging from 2.0 fm to 2.5 fm and pseudo scalar masses in the range 280 MeV to 650 MeV we control the major systematic effects of our calculation. This enables us to confront our data with chiral perturbation theory and extract low energy constants of the effective chiral Lagrangian and derived quantities, such as the light quark mass, with high precision.

f_B and f_Bs with maximally twisted Wilson fermions

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the heavy-light decay constants f_B and f_Bs performed with Nf=2 maximally twisted Wilson fermions, at four values of the lattice spacing. The decay constants have been also computed in the static limit and the results are used to interpolate the observables between the charm and the infinite-mass sectors, thus obtaining the value of the decay constants at the physical b quark mass. Our preliminary results are f_B=191(14) MeV, f_Bs=243(14) MeV, f_Bs/f_B=1.27(5). They are in good agreement with those obtained with a novel approach, recently proposed by our Collaboration (ETMC), based on the use of suitable ratios having an exactly known static limit.

Kaon oscillations in the Standard Model and Beyond using Nf=2 dynamical quarks

We compute non-perturbatively the B-parameters of the complete basis of four-fermion operators needed to study the Kaon oscillations in the SM and in its supersymmetric extension. We perform numerical simulations with two dynamical maximally twisted sea quarks at three values of the lattice spacing on configurations generated by the ETMC. Unwanted operator mixings and O(a) discretization effects are removed by discretizing the valence quarks with a suitable Osterwalder-Seiler variant of the Twisted Mass action. Operators are renormalized non-perturbatively in the RI/MOM scheme. Our preliminary result for BK(RGI) is 0.73(3)(3).

O(a^2) cutoff effects in lattice Wilson fermion simulations

In this paper we propose to interpret the large discretization artifacts affecting the neutral pion mass in maximally twisted lattice QCD simulations as O(a^2) effects whose magnitude is roughly proportional to the modulus square of the (continuum) matrix element of the pseudoscalar density operator between vacuum and one-pion state. The numerical size of this quantity is determined by the dynamical mechanism of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and turns out to be substantially larger than its natural magnitude set by the value of Lambda_QCD.

Dynamical Twisted Mass Fermions with Light Quarks: Simulation and Analysis Details

In a recent paper [hep-lat/0701012] we presented precise lattice QCD results of our European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC). They were obtained by employing two mass-degenerate flavours of twisted mass fermions at maximal twist. In the present paper we give details on our simulations and the computation of physical observables. In particular, we discuss the problem of tuning to maximal twist, the techniques we have used to compute correlators and error estimates. In addition, we provide more information on the algorithm used, the autocorrelation times and scale determination, the evaluation of disconnected contributions and the description of our data by means of chiral perturbation theory formulae.

K-meson vector and tensor decay constants and BK-parameter from Nf=2 tmQCD

We present work in progress on the computation of the K-meson vector and tensor decay constants, as well as the B-parameter in Kaon oscillations. Our simulations are performed in a partially quenched setup, with two dynamical (sea) Wilson quark flavours, having a maximally twisted mass term. Valence quarks are either of the standard or the Osterwalder-Seiler maximally twisted variety. These two regularizations can be suitably combined in order to obtain a BK parameter which is both multiplicatively renormalizable and O(a) improved.

The massless supersymmetric ladder with L rungs

We show that in the massless N=1 supersymmetric Wess-Zumino theory it is possible to devise a computational strategy by which the x-space calculation of the ladder 4-point correlators can be carried out without introducing any regularization. As an application we derive a representation valid at all loop orders in terms of conformal invariant integrals. We obtain an explicit expression of the 3-loop ladder diagram for collinear external points.

Dynamical Twisted Mass Fermions with Light Quarks

We present results of dynamical simulations with 2 flavours of degenerate Wilson twisted mass quarks at maximal twist in the range of pseudo scalar masses from 300 to 550 MeV. The simulations are performed at one value of the lattice spacing a \lesssim 0.1 fm. In order to have O(a) improvement and aiming at small residual cutoff effects, the theory is tuned to maximal twist by requiring the vanishing of the untwisted quark mass. Precise results for the pseudo scalar decay constant and the pseudo scalar mass are confronted with chiral perturbation theory predictions and the low energy constants F, \bar{l}_3 and \bar{l}_4 are evaluated with small statistical errors.

Theories, models, simulations: a computational challenge

In this talk I would like to illustrate with examples taken from Quantum Field Theory and Biophysics how an intelligent exploitation of the unprecedented power of today's computers could led not only to the solution of pivotal problems in the theory of Strong Interactions, but also to the emergence of new lines of interdisciplinary research, while at the same time pushing the limits of modeling to the realm of living systems.

On the all-order perturbative finiteness of the deformed N=4 SYM theory

We prove that the chiral propagator of the deformed N=4 SYM theory can be made finite to all orders in perturbation theory for any complex value of the deformation parameter. For any such value the set of finite deformed theories can be parametrized by a whole complex function of the coupling constant g. We reveal a new protection mechanism for chiral operators of dimension three. These are obtained by differentiating the Lagrangian with respect to the independent coupling constants. A particular combination of them is a CPO involving only chiral matter. Its all-order form is derived directly from the finiteness condition. The procedure is confirmed perturbatively through order g^6.

Ab initio simulations of Cu binding sites in the N-terminal region of PrP

The prion protein (PrP) binds Cu2+ ions in the octarepeat domain of the N-terminal tail up to full occupancy at pH=7.4. Recent experiments show that the HGGG octarepeat subdomain is responsible for holding the metal bound in a square planar coordination. By using first principle ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the Car-Parrinello type, the Cu coordination mode to the binding sites of the PrP octarepeat region is investigated. Simulations are carried out for a number of structured binding sites. Results for the complexes Cu(HGGGW)+(wat), Cu(HGGG) and the 2[Cu(HGGG)] dimer are presented. While the presence of a Trp residue and a H2O molecule does not seem to affect the nature of the Cu coordination, high stability of the bond between Cu and the amide Nitrogens of deprotonated Gly's is confirmed in the case of the Cu(HGGG) system. For the more interesting 2[Cu(HGGG)] dimer a dynamically entangled arrangement of the two monomers, with intertwined N-Cu bonds, emerges. This observation is consistent with the highly packed structure seen in experiments at full Cu occupancy.

Reducing cutoff effects in maximally twisted lattice QCD close to the chiral limit

When analyzed in terms of the Symanzik expansion, lattice correlators of multi-local (gauge-invariant) operators with non-trivial continuum limit exhibit in maximally twisted lattice QCD ``infrared divergent'' cutoff effects of the type a^{2k}/(m_π^2)^{h}, 2k\geq h\geq 1 (k,h integers), which tend to become numerically large when the pion mass gets small. We prove that, if the action is O(a) improved a` la Symanzik or, alternatively, the critical mass counter-term is chosen in some ``optimal'' way, these lattice artifacts are reduced to terms that are at worst of the order a^{2}(a^2/m_π^2)^{k-1}, k\geq 1. This implies that the continuum extrapolation of lattice results is smooth at least down to values of the quark mass, m_q, satisfying the order of magnitude inequality m_q >a^2Λ^3_{\rm QCD}.

Lattice QCD at maximal twist

In this review we discuss the general features of maximally twisted lattice QCD. In particular, we illustrate how automatic O(a) improvement can be achieved and how it is possible to set up a lattice regularization scheme where the problem of wrong chirality mixing (be it finite or infinite) affecting the computation of the matrix elements of the CP-conserving effective weak Hamiltonian is neatly avoided, while having at the same time a positive determinant even for non-degenerate quark pairs. The question of reducing the large cutoff effects that appear when the quark mass tends to zero as a consequence of parity and iso-spin breaking in the action is also addressed. It is shown that such dangerous lattice artifacts are strongly suppressed if the clover term is added to the action or, alternatively, the critical mass is chosen so as to enforce the restoration of parity.

New results in the deformed N=4 SYM theory

We investigate various perturbative properties of the deformed N=4 SYM theory. We carry out a three-loops calculation of the chiral matter superfield propagator and derive the condition on the couplings for maintaining finiteness at this order. We compute the 2-, 3- and 4-point functions of composite operators of dimension 2 at two loops. We identify all the scalar operators (chiral and non-chiral) of bare dimension 4 with vanishing one-loop anomalous dimension. We compute some 2- and 3-point functions of these operators at two loops and argue that the observed finite corrections cannot be absorbed by a finite renormalization of the operators.

Twisted mass quarks and the phase structure of lattice QCD

The phase structure of zero temperature twisted mass lattice QCD is investigated. We find strong metastabilities in the plaquette observable when the untwisted quark mass assumes positive or negative values. We provide interpretations of this phenomenon in terms of chiral symmetry breaking and the effective potential model of Sharpe and Singleton.

Chirally improving Wilson fermions II. Four-quark operators

In this paper we discuss how the peculiar properties of twisted lattice QCD at maximal twist can be employed to set up a consistent computational scheme in which, despite the explicit breaking of chiral symmetry induced by the presence of the Wilson and mass terms in the action, it is possible to completely bypass the problem of wrong chirality and parity mixings in the computation of the CP-conserving matrix elements of the $ΔS=1,2$ effective weak Hamiltonian and at the same time have a positive determinant for non-degenerate quarks as well as full O($a$) improvement in on-shell quantities with no need of improving the lattice action and the operators.
