Dark Matter Search Results from the Complete Exposure of the PICO-60 C$_3$F$_8$ Bubble Chamber

Final results are reported from operation of the PICO-60 C$_3$F$_8$ dark matter detector, a bubble chamber filled with 52 kg of C$_3$F$_8$ located in the SNOLAB underground laboratory. The chamber was operated at thermodynamic thresholds as low as 1.2 keV without loss of stability. A new blind 1404-kg-day exposure at 2.45 keV threshold was acquired with approximately the same expected total background rate as the previous 1167-kg-day exposure at 3.3 keV. This increased exposure is enabled in part by a new optical tracking analysis to better identify events near detector walls, permitting a larger fiducial volume. These results set the most stringent direct-detection constraint to date on the WIMP-proton spin-dependent cross section at 2.5 $\times$ 10$^{-41}$ cm$^2$ for a 25 GeV WIMP, and improve on previous PICO results for 3-5 GeV WIMPs by an order of magnitude.

Developing a Bubble Chamber Particle Discriminator Using Semi-Supervised Learning

The identification of non-signal events is a major hurdle to overcome for bubble chamber dark matter experiments such as PICO-60. The current practice of manually developing a discriminator function to eliminate background events is difficult when available calibration data is frequently impure and present only in small quantities. In this study, several different discriminator input/preprocessing formats and neural network architectures are applied to the task. First, they are optimized in a supervised learning context. Next, two novel semi-supervised learning algorithms are trained, and found to replicate the Acoustic Parameter (AP) discriminator previously used in PICO-60 with a mean of 97% accuracy.

Direct detection of dimer orbitals in Ba$_5$AlIr$_2$O$_{11}$

The electronic states of many Mott insulators, including iridates, are often conceptualized in terms of localized atomic states such as the famous "$J_\text{eff}=1/2$ state". Although, orbital hybridization can strongly modify such states and dramatically change the electronic properties of materials, probing this process is highly challenging. In this work, we directly detect and quantify the formation of dimer orbitals in an iridate material Ba$_5$AlIr$_2$O$_{11}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Sharp peaks corresponding to the excitations of dimer orbitals are observed and analyzed by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and theoretical simulations based on a Ir-Ir cluster model. Such partially delocalized dimer states lead to a re-definition of the angular momentum of the electrons and changes in the magnetic and electronic behaviors of the material. We use this to explain the reduction of the observed magnetic moment with respect to prediction based on atomic states. This study opens new directions to study dimerization in a large family of materials including solids, heterostructures, molecules and transient states.

Observation of a pressure-induced transition from interlayer ferromagnetism to intralayer antiferromagnetism in Sr4Ru3O10

Sr4Ru3O10 is a Ruddlesden-Popper compound with triple Ru-O perovskite layers separated by Sr-O alkali layers. This compound presents a rare coexistence of interlayer (c-axis) ferromagnetism and intralayer (basal-plane) metamagnetism at ambient pressure. Here we report the observation of pressure-induced, intralayer itinerant antiferromagnetism arising from the interlayer ferromagnetism. The application of modest hydrostatic pressure generates an anisotropy that causes a flattening and a tilting of RuO6 octahedra. All magnetic and transport results from this study indicate these lattice distortions diminish the c-axis ferromagnetism and basal-plane metamagnetism, and induce a basal-plane antiferromagnetic state. The unusually large magnetoelastic coupling and pressure tunability of Sr4Ru3O10 makes it a unique model system for studies of itinerant magnetism.

Anisotropic antiferromagnetic order in spin-orbit coupled trigonal lattice Ca2Sr2IrO6

We used single-crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction to investigate the crystal and magnetic structures of trigonal lattice iridate Ca2Sr2IrO6. The crystal structure is determined to be $R\bar3$ with two distinct Ir sites. The system exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N = 13.1$ K. The magnetic wave vector is identified as $(0,0.5,1)$ with ferromagnetic coupling along the $a$ axis and antiferromagnetic correlation along the $b$ axis. Spins align dominantly within the basal plane along the [1,2,0] direction and tilt 34$^\circ$ towards the $c$ axis. The ordered moment is 0.66(3) $μ_B$/Ir, larger than other iridates where iridium ions form corner- or edge-sharing $\rm IrO_6$ octahedral networks. The tilting angle is reduced to $\approx19^\circ$ when a magnetic field of 4.9 Tesla is applied along the $c$ axis. Density functional theory calculations confirm that the experimentally determined magnetic configuration is the most probable ground state with an insulating gap $\sim0.5$~eV.

Probing electronic excitations in iridates with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and emission spectroscopy techniques

We report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of various iridate materials focusing on core-level excitations and transitions between crystal-field split d-levels. The 2p core hole created at the Ir $L_3$ absorption edge has a very short lifetime giving rise to a broad absorption width ($\sim 5$~eV). This absorption linewidth broadening can be overcome by studying the resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) map, which is a two-dimensional intensity map of the Ir L$α_2$ emission obtained with high energy-resolution monochromator and analyzer. By limiting the emitted photon energy to a narrow range, one can obtain x-ray absorption spectra in the high energy-resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) mode, while one can also simulate quasi-$M_4$-edge absorption spectra by integrating over incident photon energies. Both methods improve the absorption line width significantly, allowing detailed studies of unoccupied electronic structure in iridates and other $5d$ transition metal compounds. On the other hand, the short lifetime of the 2p core hole benefits the study of excitations of valence electrons. We show that the incident energy dependence of the RIXS spectra for $d-d$ transitions is simple to understand due to the short core-hole lifetime, which validates ultra-short core-hole lifetime approximation used widely in theoretical calculations. We compared $d-d$ excitations in various iridates and found that the excitations between the t$_{2g}$ and e$_g$ states share many similarities among different materials. However, the RIXS spectra due to the transitions between the spin-orbit-split t$_{2g}$ levels vary widely depending on the oxidation state and electronic bandwidths.

Decoupling of magnetism and electric transport in single-crystal (Sr1-xAx)2IrO4 (A = Ca or Ba)

We report a systematical structural, transport and magnetic study of Ca or Ba doped Sr2IrO4single crystals. Isoelectronically substituting Ca2+ (up to 15%) or Ba2+ (up to 4%) ion for the Sr2+ ion provides no additional charge carriers but effectively changes the lattice parameters in Sr2IrO4. In particular, 15% Ca doping considerably reduces the c-axis and the unit cell by nearly 0.45% and 1.00 %, respectively. These significant, anisotropic compressions in the lattice parameters conspicuously cause no change in the Néel temperature which remains at 240 K, but drastically reduces the electrical resistivity by up to five orders of magnitude or even precipitates a sharp insulator-to-metal transition at lower temperatures, i.e. the vanishing insulating state accompanies an unchanged Néel temperature in (Sr1-xAx)2IrO4. This observation brings to light an intriguing difference between chemical pressure and applied pressure, the latter of which does suppress the long-range magnetic order in Sr2IrO4. This difference reveals the importance of the Ir1-O2-Ir1 bond angle and homogenous volume compression in determining the magnetic ground state. All results, along with a comparison drawn with results of Tb and La doped Sr2IrO4, underscore that the magnetic transition plays a nonessential role in the formation of the charge gap in the spin-orbit-tuned iridate.

Ultrafast destruction and recovery of the spin density wave order in iron based pnictides: a multi-pulse optical study

We report on systematic excitation-density dependent all-optical femtosecond time resolved study of the spin-density wave state in iron-based superconductors. The destruction and recovery dynamics are measured by means of the standard and a multi-pulse pump-probe technique. The experimental data are analyzed and interpreted in the framework of an extended three temperature model. The analysis suggests that the optical-phonons energy-relaxation plays an important role in the recovery of almost exclusively electronically driven spin density wave order.

Titanium diboride ceramics for solar thermal absorbers

Titanium diboride (TiB2) is a low-density refractory material belonging to the family of ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs). This paper reports on the production and microstructural and optical characterization of nearly fully dense TiB2, with particular interest to its potential utilization as novel thermal solar absorber. Monolithic bulk samples are produced starting from elemental reactants by a two-step method consisting of the Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) followed by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of the resulting powders. The surface of obtained samples has-been characterized from the microstructural and topological points of view. The hemispherical reflectance spectrum has been measured from 0.3 to 15 um wavelength, to evaluate the potential of this material as solar absorber for future concentrating solar plants.

Electronic and optical properties of La-doped Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ epitaxial thin-films

We have investigated structural, transport, and optical properties of tensile strained (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (x = 0, 0.025, 0.05) epitaxial thin-films. While High-T$_c$ superconductivity is predicted theoretically in the system, we have observed that all of the samples remain insulating with finite optical gap energies and Mott variable-range hopping characteristics in transport. Cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy indicates that structural defects such as stacking faults appear in this system. The insulating behavior of the La-doped Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ thin-films is presumably due to disorder-induced localization and ineffective electron-doping of La, which brings to light the intriguing difference between epitaxial thin films and bulk single crystals of the iridates.

Electrical Control of Structural and Physical Properties via Strong Spin-Orbit Interactions in Sr2IrO4

Electrical control of structural and physical properties is a long-sought, but elusive goal of contemporary science and technology. We demonstrate that a combination of strong spin-orbit interactions (SOI) and a canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott state is sufficient to attain that goal. The AFM insulator Sr2IrO4 provides a model system in which strong SOI lock canted Ir magnetic moments to IrO6-octahedra, causing them to rigidly rotate together. A novel coupling between an applied electrical current and the canting angle reduces the Néel temperature and drives a large, non-linear lattice expansion that closely tracks the magnetization, increases the electron mobility, and precipitates a unique resistive switching effect. Our observations open new avenues for understanding fundamental physics driven by strong SOI in condensed matter, and provide a new paradigm for functional materials and devices.

Dark Matter Search Results from the PICO-60 C$_3$F$_8$ Bubble Chamber

New results are reported from the operation of the PICO-60 dark matter detector, a bubble chamber filled with 52 kg of C$_3$F$_8$ located in the SNOLAB underground laboratory. As in previous PICO bubble chambers, PICO-60 C$_3$F$_8$ exhibits excellent electron recoil and alpha decay rejection, and the observed multiple-scattering neutron rate indicates a single-scatter neutron background of less than 1 event per month. A blind analysis of an efficiency-corrected 1167-kg-day exposure at a 3.3-keV thermodynamic threshold reveals no single-scattering nuclear recoil candidates, consistent with the predicted background. These results set the most stringent direct-detection constraint to date on the WIMP-proton spin-dependent cross section at 3.4 $\times$ 10$^{-41}$ cm$^2$ for a 30-GeV$\thinspace$c$^{-2}$ WIMP, more than one order of magnitude improvement from previous PICO results.

Optical Signatures of Spin-Orbit Exciton in Bandwidth Controlled Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ Epitaxial Films via High-Concentration Ca and Ba Doping

We have investigated the electronic and optical properties of (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_2$IrO$_4$ (x= 0 - 0.375) and (Sr$_{1-y}$Ba$_y$)$_2$IrO$_4$ (y= 0 - 0.375) epitaxial thin-films, in which the bandwidth is systematically tuned via chemical substitutions of Sr ions by Ca and Ba. Transport measurements indicate that the thin-film series exhibits insulating behavior, similar to the J$_{eff}$= 1/2 spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. As the average A-site ionic radius increases from (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)$_2$IrO$_4$ to (Sr$_{1-y}$Ba$_y$)$_2$IrO$_4$, optical conductivity spectra in the near-infrared region shift to lower energies, which cannot be explained by the simple picture of well-separated J$_{eff}$= 1/2 and J$_{eff}$= 3/2 bands. We suggest that the two-peak-like optical conductivity spectra of the layered iridates originates from the overlap between the optically-forbidden spin-orbit exciton and the inter-site optical transitions within the J$_{eff}$= 1/2 band. Our experimental results are consistent with this interpretation as implemented by a multi-orbital Hubbard model calculation: namely, incorporating a strong Fano-like coupling between the spin-orbit exciton and inter-site d-d transitions within the J$_{eff}$= 1/2 band.

Quantum propulsion and trapping of nano-objects by inhomogeneity-induced lateral Casimir forces

Lateral Casimir force near a laterally-inhomogeneous plate is first revealed by both rigorous simulations and proximity approximations. The inhomogeneity-induced lateral Casimir force provides a novel method to control the lateral motion of nano-objects above the plate, and makes source-free manipulations of them possible. When incorporated with the Casimir repulsion in a fluid, the lateral Casimir force is shown to dominate over Brownian motion and enables long-distance quantum propulsion and firm quantum trapping of nano-objects. Gratings of varying filling factors to mimic micro-scale inhomogeneity also confirm those effects. The idea to design asymmetric distributions of nano-structures paves the way to sophisticated tailoring of the lateral Casimir force.

Determination of Hund's coupling in 5d Oxides using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on ordered double perovskite samples containing Re$^{5+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ with $5d^2$ and $5d^4$ electronic configurations respectively. In particular, the observed RIXS spectra of Ba$_2$YReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$MIrO$_6$ (M=Y, Gd) show sharp intra-t$_{2g}$ transitions, which can be quantitatively understood using a minimal `atomic' Hamiltonian incorporating spin-orbit coupling ($λ$) and Hund's coupling ($J_H$). Our analysis yields $λ=0.38(2)$eV with $J_H=0.26(2)$eV for Re$^{5+}$, and $λ=0.42(2)$eV with $J_H=0.25(4)$eV for Ir$^{5+}$. Our results provide the first sharp estimates for the Hund's coupling in $5d$ oxides, and suggest that it should be treated on equal footing with spin-orbit interaction in multi-orbital $5d$ transition metal compounds.

New Evidence for a Low-Temperature Magnetic Ground State in Double-Perovskite Iridates with Ir5+(5d4) Ions

We report an unusual magnetic ground state in single-crystal, double-perovskite Ba2YIrO6 and Sr doped Ba2YIrO6 with Ir5+(5d4) ions. Long-range magnetic order below 1.7 K is confirmed by DC magnetization, AC magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The observed magnetic order is extraordinarily delicate and cannot be explained in terms of either a low-spin S=1 state, or a singlet Jeff=0 state imposed by the spin-orbit interactions (SOI). Alternatively, the magnetic ground state appears consistent with a SOI that competes with comparable Hund's rule coupling and inherently large electron hopping, which cannot stabilize the singlet Jeff=0 ground state. However, this picture is controversial, and conflicting magnetic behavior for these materials is reported in both experimental and theoretical studies, which highlights the intricate interplay of interactions that determine the ground state of materials with strong SOI.

Charge partitioning and anomalous hole doping in Rh-doped Sr2IrO4

The simultaneous presence of sizable spin-orbit interactions and electron correlations in iridium oxides has led to predictions of novel ground states including Dirac semimetals, Kitaev spin liquids, and superconductivity. Electron and hole doping studies of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 are being intensively pursued due to extensive parallels with the La2CuO4 parent compound of Cuprate superconductors. In particular, the mechanism of charge doping associated with replacement of Ir with Rh ions remains controversial with profound consequences for the interpretation of electronic structure and transport data. Using x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements at the Rh L, K- and Ir L- edges we observe anomalous evolution of charge partitioning between Rh and Ir with Rh doping. The partitioning of charge between Rh and Ir sites progresses in a way that holes are initially doped into the Jeff=1/2 band at low x only to be removed from it at higher x values. This anomalous hole doping naturally explains the re-entrant insulating phase in the phase diagram of Rh doped Sr2IrO4 and ought to be considered when searching for superconductivity and other emergent phenomena in iridates doped with 4d elements

Doping Evolution of Magnetic Order and Magnetic Excitations in (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$

We use resonant elastic and inelastic X-ray scattering at the Ir-$L_3$ edge to study the doping-dependent magnetic order, magnetic excitations and spin-orbit excitons in the electron-doped bilayer iridate (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.065$). With increasing doping $x$, the three-dimensional long range antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed and evolves into a three-dimensional short range order from $x = 0$ to $0.05$, followed by a transition to two-dimensional short range order between $x = 0.05$ and $0.065$. Following the evolution of the antiferromagnetic order, the magnetic excitations undergo damping, anisotropic softening and gap collapse, accompanied by weakly doping-dependent spin-orbit excitons. Therefore, we conclude that electron doping suppresses the magnetic anisotropy and interlayer couplings and drives (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ into a correlated metallic state hosting two-dimensional short range antiferromagnetic order and strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations of $J_{\text{eff}} = \frac{1}{2}$ moments, with the magnon gap strongly suppressed.
