Atmospheric parameters and pulsational properties for a sample of $δ$\,Sct, $γ$\,Dor, and hybrid {\it Kepler} targets

We report spectroscopic observations for 19 $δ$\,Sct candidates observed by the {\it Kepler} satellite both in long and short cadence mode. For all these stars, by using spectral synthesis, we derive the effective temperature, the surface gravity and the projected rotational velocity. An equivalent spectral type classification has been also performed for all stars in the sample. These determinations are fundamental for modelling the frequency spectra that will be extracted from the {\it Kepler} data for asteroseismic inference. For all the 19 stars, we present also periodograms obtained from {\it Kepler} data. We find that all stars show peaks in both low- ($γ$\,Dor; g mode) and high-frequency ($δ$\,Sct; p mode) regions. Using the amplitudes and considering 5\,c/d as a boundary frequency, we classified 3 stars as pure $γ$\,Dor, 4 as $γ$\,Dor\,-\,$δ$\ hybrid, Sct, 5 as $δ$\,Sct\,-\,$γ$\,Dor hybrid, and 6 as pure $δ$\,Sct. The only exception is the star KIC\,05296877 which we suggest could be a binary.

Abundances for a large sample of red giants in NGC 1851: hints for a merger of two clusters?

We present the abundance analysis of a sample of more than 120 red giants in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 1851, based on FLAMES spectra. We find a small but detectable metallicity spread. This spread is compatible with the presence of two different groups of stars with a metallicity difference of 0.06-0.08 dex, in agreement with earlier photometric studies. If stars are divided into these two groups according to their metallicity, both components show a Na-O anticorrelation (signature of a genuine GC nature) of moderate extension. The metal-poor stars are more concentrated than the metal-rich ones. We tentatively propose the hypothesis that NGC 1851 formed from a merger of two individual GCs with a slightly different Fe and alpha-element content, and possibly an age difference up to 1 Gyr. This is supported also by number ratios of stars on the split subgiant and on the bimodal horizontal branches. The distribution of n-capture process elements in the two components also supports the idea that the enrichment must have occurred in each of the structures separately, and not as a continuum of events in a single GC. The most probable explanation is that the proto-clusters formed into a (now dissolved) dwarf galaxy and later merged to produce the present GC.

Detailed abundances of a large sample of giant stars in M 54 and in the Sagittarius nucleus

Homogeneous abundances of light elements, alpha and Fe-group elements from high-resolution FLAMES spectra are presented for 76 red giant stars in M54, a massive globular cluster (GC) lying in the nucleus of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. We also derived detailed abundances for 27 red giants belonging to the Sgr nucleus. Our abundances assess the intrinsic metallicity dispersion (~0.19 dex, rms scatter) of M54, with the bulk of stars peaking at [Fe/H]~-1.6 and a long tail extending to higher metallicities, similar to omega Cen. The spread in these probable nuclear star clusters exceeds those of most GCs: these massive clusters are located in a region intermediate between normal GCs and dwarf galaxies. M54 shows the Na-O anticorrelation, typical signature of GCs, which is instead absent in the Sgr nucleus. The light elements (Mg, Al, Si) participating to the high temperature Mg-Al cycle show that the pattern of (anti)correlations produced by proton-capture reactions in H-burning is clearly different between the most metal-rich and most metal-poor components in the two most massive GCs in the Galaxy, confirming early result based on the Na-O anticorrelation. As in omega Cen, stars affected by most extreme processing, i.e. showing the signature of more massive polluters, are those of the metal-rich component. This can be understood if the burst of star formation giving birth to the metal-rich component was delayed by as much as 10-30 Myr with respect to the metal-poor one. The evolution of these massive GCs can be reconciled in the general scenario for the formation of GCs sketched in Carretta et al.(2010a) taking into account that omega Cen could have already incorporated the surrounding nucleus of its progenitor and lost the rest of the hosting galaxy while the two are still observable as distinct components in M54 and the surrounding field.

Characterization of Kepler early-type targets

Stellar pulsation offers a unique opportunity to constrain the intrinsic parameters of stars and unveil their inner structure. The Kepler satellite is collecting an enormous amount of data of unprecedent photometric precision, which will allow us to test theory and obtain a very precise tomography of stellar interiors. We attempt to determine the stars' fundamental parameters Teff, log g, v sin i, and luminosity needed for computing asteroseismic models and interpreting Kepler data. We report spectroscopic observations of 23 early-type Kepler asteroseismic targets, 13 other stars in the Kepler field, that had not been selected to be observed. We measured the radial velocity by performing a cross-correlation with template spectra to help us identify non-single stars. Spectral synthesis was performed to derive the stellar parameters of our target stars, and the state-of-the-art LTE atmospheric models were computed. For all the stars of our sample, we derived the radial velocity, Teff, log g, v sin i, and luminosities. For 12 stars, we performed a detailed abundance analysis of 20 species, for 16, we could derive only the [Fe/H] ratio. A spectral classification was also performed for 17 stars in the sample. We identify two double-lined spectroscopic binaries, HIP96299 and HIP98551, the former of which is an already known eclipsing binary, and two single-lined spectroscopic binaries, HIP 97254 and HIP 97724. We also report two suspected spectroscopic binaries, HIP92637 and HIP96762, and the detection of a possible variability in the radial velocity of HIP 96277. Two of our program stars are chemically peculiar, namely HIP93941, which we classify as B2 He-weak, and HIP96210, which we classify as B6 HgMn. Finally, we find that HIP93522, HIP93941, HIP93943, HIP96210 and HIP96762, are very slow rotators which makes them very interesting and promising targets for asteroseismic modeling.

Ground-based observations of Kepler asteroseismic targets

We present the ground-based activities within the different working groups of the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium (KASC). The activities aim at the systematic characterization of the 5000+ KASC targets, and at the collection of ground-based follow-up time-series data of selected promising Kepler pulsators. So far, 36 different instruments at 31 telescopes on 23 different observatories in 12 countries are in use, and a total of more than 530 observing nights has been awarded. (Based on observations made with the Isaac Newton Telescope, William Herschel Telescope, Nordic Optical Telescope, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, Mercator Telescope (La Palma, Spain), and IAC-80 (Tenerife, Spain). Also based on observations taken at the observatories of Sierra Nevada, San Pedro Martir, Vienna, Xinglong, Apache Point, Lulin, Tautenburg, Loiano, Serra la Nave, Asiago, McDonald, Skinakas, Pic du Midi, Mauna Kea, Steward Observatory, Mt Wilson, Bialkow Observatory of the Wroclaw University, Piszkesteto Mountain Station, Observatoire de Haute Provence, and Centro Astronomico Hispano Aleman at Calar Alto. M 54 + Sagittarius = omega Centauri

We derive homogeneous abundances of Fe, O, Na and alpha-elements from high resolution FLAMES spectra for 76 red giant stars in NGC 6715 (M 54) and for 25 red giants in the surrounding nucleus of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy. Our main findings are that: (i) we confirm that M 54 shows intrinsic metallicity dispersion, ~0.19 dex r.m.s.; (ii) when the stars of the Sgr nucleus are included, the metallicity distribution strongly resembles that in omega Cen; the relative contribution of the most metal-rich stars is however different in these two objects; (iii) in both GCs there is a very extended Na-O anticorrelation, signature of different stellar generations born within the cluster, and (iv) the metal-poor and metal-rich components in M 54 (and omega Cen) show clearly distinct extension of the Na-O anticorrelation, the most heavily polluted stars being those of the metal-rich component. We propose a tentative scenario for cluster formation that could explain these features. Finally, similarities and differences found in the two most massive GCs in our Galaxy can be easily explained if they are similar objects (nuclear clusters in dwarf galaxies) observed at different stages of their dynamical evolution.

Hybrid gamma Doradus - delta Scuti pulsators: New insights into the physics of the oscillations from Kepler observations

Observations of the pulsations of stars can be used to infer their interior structure and test theoretical models. The main sequence $γ$ Doradus (Dor) and $δ$ Scuti (Sct) stars with masses 1.2-2.5 $M_{\sun}$ are particularly useful for these studies. The $γ$ Dor stars pulsate in high-order $g$ modes with periods of order 1 day, driven by convective blocking at the base of their envelope convection zone. The $δ$ Sct stars pulsate in low-order $g$ and $p$ modes with periods of order 2 hours, driven by the $κ$ mechanism operating in the Heii ionization zone. Theory predicts an overlap region in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram between instability regions, where 'hybrid' stars pulsating in both types of modes should exist. The two types of modes with properties governed by different portions of the stellar interior provide complementary model constraints. Among the known $γ$ Dor and $δ$ Sct stars, only four have been confirmed as hybrids. Now, analysis of combined Quarter 0 and Quarter 1 Kepler data for hundreds of variable stars shows that the frequency spectra are so rich that there are practically no pure $δ$ Sct or $γ$ Dor pulsators, i.e. essentially all of the stars show frequencies in both the $δ$ Sct and $γ$ Dor frequency range. A new observational classification scheme is proposed that takes into account the amplitude as well as the frequency, and is applied to categorize 234 stars as $δ$ Sct, $γ$ Dor, $δ$ Sct/$γ$ Dor or $γ$ Dor/$δ$ Sct hybrids.

Na-O Anticorrelation and HB. VII. The chemical composition of first and second-generation stars in 15 globular clusters from GIRAFFE spectra

We present abundances of Fe, Na, and O for 1409 red giant stars in 15 galactic globular clusters, derived from the homogeneous analysis of high resolution FLAMES/GIRAFFE spectra. Combining the present data with previous results, we obtained a total sample of 1958 stars in 19 clusters, the largest and most homogeneous database of this kind to date. Our GCs have [Fe/H] from -2.4 to -0.4, with a wide variety of global parameters (morphology of the horizontal branch, mass, concentration, etc). For all clusters we find the Na-O anticorrelation, the classical signature of proton-capture reactions in H-burning at high temperature in a previous generation of more massive stars, now extinct. Using quantitative criteria (from the morphology and extension of the Na-O anticorrelation), we can define 3 components of the stellar population in GCs: a primordial component (P) of first-generation stars, and 2 components of second-generation stars (intermediate I and extreme E populations from their different chemical composition). The P component is present in all GCs, and its fraction is almost constant at about one third. The I component represents the bulk of the cluster population. The E component is not present in all GCs, and it is more conspicuous in some (but not in all) of the most massive ones. We discuss the fractions and spatial distributions of these components in our sample and in two additional clusters (M3 and M13) from the literature. We also find that the slope of the anti-correlation (defined by the minimum O and maximum Na abundances) changes from cluster-to-cluster, a change that is represented well by a bilinear relation on cluster metallicity and luminosity. This second dependence suggests a correlation between average mass of polluters and cluster mass.

Multisite photometry of the pulsating Herbig Ae star V346 Ori

CONTEXT: The study of pulsation in Pre--Main--Sequence intermediate-mass stars represents an important tool for deriving information on fundamental stellar parameters and internal structure, as well as for testing current theoretical models. Interest in this class of variable stars has significantly increased during the last decade and about 30 members are presently known in the literature. AIMS: We have constructed the frequency spectrum of the oscillations in V346 Ori. We apply asteroseismic tools to these data to estimate the intrinsic parameters (mass, luminosity, effective temperature) of V346 Ori and to obtain information on its internal structure. METHODS: CCD time series photometry in the Johnson V filter has been obtained for a total of 145.7 h of observations distributed over 36 nights. The resulting light curves have been subjected to a detailed frequency analysis using updated numerical techniques. Photometric and spectroscopic data have also been acquired to determine reliable estimates of the stellar properties. RESULTS: We have identified 13 oscillation frequencies, 6 of which with higher significance. These have been compared with the predictions of non-radial adiabatic models. The resulting best fit model has a mass of 2.1$\pm$0.2 $M_{\odot}$, luminosity $\log{L/L_{\odot}}=1.37^{+0.11}_{-0.13}$, and effective temperature 7300$\pm$200 K. These values are marginally consistent with the association of V346 Ori to Orion OB1a. Alternatively, V346 Ori could be placed at a slightly larger distance than previously estimated.

The spectroscopic variability of T$_{\rm eff}$ and $\log g$ in $β$ Cep

Time resolved spectra of $β$ Cep yield the following average results: T$_{\rm eff}$ =24000 $\pm$ 250 K, $\log g$ = 3.91 $\pm$ 0.05 and $ξ$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.9 km s$^{-1}$. N, O, Ne, Al, Si and S abundances are solar while C, Mg and Fe are slightly under-abundant. Pulsational amplitudes of $Δ$T$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 700 K and $Δ$$\log g$ $\sim$ 0.2 dex are found from H$β$. The metal lines give similar amplitudes but centred on T$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 25000 K. An upper limit of 1.0 km s$^{-1}$ to the variability of the microturbulence is derived from the Si {\sc iii} triplet at 455 nm. The radial velocity amplitude derived from the core of H$β$ is $\sim$ 15% greater than that from the metal lines.

H$α$ long term monitoring of the Be star $β$ Cep Aa

Recent papers published in the last years contributed to resolve the enigma on the hypothetical Be nature of the hot pulsating star $β$ Cep. This star shows variable emission in the H$α$ line, typical for Be stars, but its projected rotational velocity is very much lower than the critical limit, contrary to what is expected for a typical Be star. The emission has been attributed to the secondary component of the $β$ Cep spectroscopic binary system. In this paper, using both ours and archived spectra, we attempted to recover the H$α$ profile of the secondary component and to analyze its behavior with time for a long period. To accomplish this task, we first derived the atmospheric parameters of the primary: T$_{\rm eff}$ = 24000 $\pm$ 250 K and $\log g$ = 3.91 $\pm$ 0.10, then we used these values to compute its synthetic H$α$ profile and finally we reconstructed the secondary's profile disentangling the observed one. The secondary's H$α$ profile shows the typical two peaks emission of a Be star with a strong variability. We analyzed also the behavior versus time of some line width parameters: equivalent width, V/R, FWHM, peaks separation and radial velocity of the central depression. Projected rotational velocity ($v \sin i$) of the secondary and the dimension of the equatorial surrounding disk have been estimated, too.

Helium stratification in HD 145792: a new Helium strong star

In this paper we report on the real nature of the star HD 145792, classified as He weak in {\it ``The General Catalogue of Ap and Am stars''}. By means of FEROS@ESO1.52m high resolution spectroscopic data, we refined the atmospheric parameters of the star, obtaining: T$_{\rm eff}$ = 14400 $\pm$ 400 K, $\log g$ = 4.06 $\pm$ 0.08 and $ξ$ = 0 $^{+0.6}$ km s$^{-1}$. These values resulted always lower than those derived by different authors with pure photometric approaches. Using our values we undertook an abundance analysis with the aim to derive, for the first time, the chemical pattern of the star's atmosphere. For metals a pure LTE synthesis (ATLAS9 and SYNTHE) has been used, while for helium a hybrid approach has been preferred (ATLAS9 and SYNSPEC). The principal result of our study is that HD 145792 belongs to He strong class contrary to the previous classification. Moreover, helium seems to be vertically stratified in the atmosphere, decreasing toward deepest layers. For what that concerns metals abundances, we found the following: overabundance of oxygen, neon, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur and calcium; carbon, nitrogen, magnesium, aluminum, titanium, chromium and nickel are normal, being the discrepancies from the solar values within the experimental errors; iron resulted to be slightly underabundant.

A spectroscopic search for non-radial pulsations in the delta Scuti star gamma Bootis

High-resolution spectroscopic observations of the rapidly rotating delta Scuti star gamma Bootis have been carried out on 2005, over 6 consecutive nights, in order to search for line-profile variability. Time series, consisting of flux measurements at each wavelength bin across the TiII 4571.917 A line profile as a function of time, have been Fourier analyzed. The results confirm the early detection reported by Kennelly et al. (1992) of a dominant periodic component at frequency 21.28 c/d in the observer's frame, probably due to a high azimuthal order sectorial mode. Moreover, we found other periodicities at 5.06 c/d, 12.09 c/d, probably present but not secure, and at 11.70 c/d and 18.09 c/d, uncertain. The latter frequency, if present, should be identifiable as another high azimuthal order sectorial mode and three additional terms, probably due to low-l modes, as proved by the analysis of the first three moments of the line. Owing to the short time baseline and the one-site temporal sampling we consider our results only preliminary but encouraging for a more extensive multisite campaign. A refinement of the atmospheric physical parameters of the star has been obtained from our spectroscopic data and adopted for preliminary computations of evolutionary models of gamma Bootis.

Spectroscopy of the hot pulsating star Beta Cephei. Velocities and EWs from C,N,O and Si lines

Frequencies in oscillating $β$ Cephei stars are usually inferred by means of radial velocities measured from the SiIII triplet 4552-4574 A. These lines, relatively insensitive to the variation of Teff through a pulsation cycle, show small equivalent width variations. In this study we aimed to verify if the behavior of radial velocities and equivalent widths measured from other ions are compatible with the one observed from SiIII lines and than to verify the possible vertical stratification along the stellar atmosphere. For this reason we selected from our spectra a number of, unblended and well isolated, CII, NII and OII lines besides the famous SiIII triplet. All those lines cover the range in optical depth between -2.1 and -0.5. Unfortunately, we did not find any differences in the radial velocities behavior line-by-line and then we derived the frequency of the principal radial mode combining all the velocities derived from each spectral line separately. The inferred frequency was f1=5.249677+/-0.000007 c/d. Another important task we would like to accomplish with this paper is to make available to the community our large sample of spectroscopic data, that is 932 velocities and equivalent widths measured from our sample of C, N, O and Si lines. All the spectra were acquired at the 1-meter class telescope of the stellar station of the INAF - Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania, in the period starting from July, the 27th 2005 to November, the 1st 2006.

Na-O Anticorrelation and HB. IV. Detection of He-rich and He-poor stellar populations in the globular cluster NGC 6218

We used the multifiber spectrograph FLAMES on the ESO Very Large Telescope UT2 to derive atmospheric parameters, metallicities and abundances of O and Na for 79 red giant stars in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6218 (M 12). We analyzed stars in the magnitude range from about 1 mag below the bump to the tip of the Red Giant Branch. The average metallicity we derive is [Fe/H]=-1.31+/-0.004+/-0.028 dex (random and systematic errors, respectively), with a very small star-to-star scatter (rms=0.033 dex), from moderately high-resolution Giraffe spectra. This is the first extensive spectroscopic abundance analysis in this cluster. Our results indicate that NGC 6218 is very homogeneous as far as heavy elements are concerned. On the other hand, light elements involved in the well known proton-capture reactions of H-burning at high temperature, such as O and Na, show large variations, anticorrelated with each other, at all luminosities along the red giant branch. The conclusion is that the Na-O anticorrelation must be established in early times at the cluster formation. We interpret the variation of Na found near the RGB-bump as the effect of two distinct populations having different bump luminosities, as predicted for different He content. To our knowledge, NGC 6218 is the first GC where such a signature has been spectroscopically detected, when combined with consistent and homogeneous data obtained for NGC 6752 to gain in statistical significance.

Variability of the HeI5876 A line in early type chemically peculiar stars

Chemically peculiar stars present spectral and photometric variability with a single period. In the oblique rotator model, the non homogeneous distribution of elements on the stellar surface is at the origin of the observed variations. As to helium weak stars, it has been suggested that photometric and helium line equivalent width variations are out of phase. To understand the behaviour of helium in CP stars, we have obtained time resolved spectra of the HeI5876 A line for a sample of 16 chemically peculiar stars in the spectral range B3 -- A1 and belonging to different sub-groups. The HeI5876 A line is too weak to be measured in the spectra of the stars HD 24155, HD 41269, and HD 220825. No variation of the equivalent width of the selected He line has been revealed in the stars HD 22920, HD 24587, HD 36589, HD 49606, and HD 209515. The equivalent width variation of the HeI5876 A line is in phase with the photometric variability for the stars HD 43819, HD 171247 and HD 176582. On the contrary it is out of phase for the stars HD 28843, HD 182255 and HD 223640. No clear relation has been found for the stars HD 26571 and HD 177003.
