Self-Consistent Quasi-Particle RPA for the Description of Superfluid Fermi Systems

Self-Consistent Quasi-Particle RPA (SCQRPA) is for the first time applied to a more level pairing case. Various filling situations and values for the coupling constant are considered. Very encouraging results in comparison with the exact solution of the model are obtained. The nature of the low lying mode in SCQRPA is identified. The strong reduction of the number fluctuation in SCQRPA vs BCS is pointed out. The transition from superfluidity to the normal fluid case is carefully investigated.

Restoration of broken symmetries in Self-Consistent RPA

It is shown that the Self-Consistent RPA (SCRPA) approach allows in a very natural way to restore symmetries, spontaneously broken on the mean field level. This is achieved via the introduction of a second Lagrange multiplier which constrains the variance of the symmetry operator to zero. This important feature of SCRPA, here pointed out for the first time, is illustrated employing a simplified model of the nuclear superfluidity.

Chiral symmetry and quantum hadro-dynamics

Using the linear sigma model, we study the evolutions of the quark condensate and of the nucleon mass in the nuclear medium. Our formulation of the model allows the inclusion of both pion and scalar-isoscalar degrees of freedom. It guarantees that the low energy theorems and the constrains of chiral perturbation theory are respected. We show how this formalism incorporates quantum hadro-dynamics improved by the pion loops effects.

Dropping Sigma-Meson Mass and In-Medium Pion-Pion Correlations

The influence of a dropping sigma-meson mass on previously calculated in-medium pion-pion correlations in the J=I=0 (sigma-meson) channel is investigated. It is found that the invariant-mass distribution around the vacuum threshold experiences a further strong enhancement over and above the standard many-body effects. The relevance of this result for the theoretical interpretation of this result for the theoretical interpretation of recent A(pi-2 pi)X data is pointed out.

In-medium Pion-Pion Interaction and Chiral Symmetry Restoration

We discuss medium modifications of the unitarized pion-pion interaction in the nuclear medium. We incorporate both the effects of chiral symmetry restoration and the influence of collective nuclear pionic modes, originating from the p-wave coupling of the pion to delta-hole configurations. We show how the resulting strong enhancement of the sigma-meson spectral function is related to large fluctuations of the condensate associated with the partial restoration of chiral symmetry.

Pion Scalar Density and Chiral Symmetry Restoration at Finite Temperature and Density

This paper is devoted to the evaluation of the pionic scalar density at finite temperature and baryonic density. We express the latter effect in terms of the nuclear response evaluated in the random phase approxima- tion. We discuss the density and temperature evolution of the pionic density which governs the quark condensate evolution. Numerical evalua- tions are performed.

Medium Modification of The Pion-Pion Interaction at Finite Density

We discuss medium modifications of the unitarized pion-pion interaction in the nuclear medium. We incorporate both the effects of chiral symmetry restoration and the influence of collective nuclear pionic modes originating from the p-wave coupling of the pion to delta-hole configurations. We show in particular that the dropping of the sigma meson mass significantly enhances the low energy structure created by the in-medium collective pionic modes.

Enhancement of $πA \to ππA$ Threshold Cross Sections by In-Medium $ππ$ Final State Interactions

We address the problem of pion production in low energy $π$-nucleus collisions. For the production mechanism we assume a simple model consisting of a coherent sum of single pion exchange and the excitation---followed by the decay into two pions and a nucleon---of the $N^*(1440)$ resonance. The production amplitude is modified by the final state interaction between the pions calculated using the chirally improved Jülich meson exchange model including the polarization of the nuclear medium by the pions. The model reproduces well the experimentally observed $πA \to ππA$ cross sections, especially the enhancement with increasing $A$ of the $π^+π^-$ mass distribution in the threshold region.

Axial and Vector Correlator Mixing in Hot and Dense Hadronic Matter

We study the manifestations of chiral symmetry restoration which have a significance for the parity mixing. Restricting to pions and nucleons we establish a formalism for the expression of the vector correlator, which displays the mixing of the axial correlator into the vector one and unifies the cases of the heat bath and the dense medium. We give examples of mixing cross-sections. We also establish a link between the energy integrated mixing cross-sections and the pion scalar density which governs the quenching factors of coupling constants, such as the pion decay one, as well as the quark condensate evolution.

In-Medium $π-π$ Correlations in the '$σ$-Meson'-Channel

The present status of the in-medium invariant $π-π$ mass distribution in the sigma-meson channel around the threshold is reviewed from the theory side and contrasted with recent experiments on $(π,2π)$ knock-out reactions. A preliminary investigation indicates that the strongly target-mass dependent invariant mass enhancement of the two pions can be explained theoretically. A more refined reaction theory is needed to confirm this result. In the theoretical description, based on the linear sigma model, emphasis is put on constraints from chiral symmetry.

Chiral Symmetry Restoration and Parity Mixing

We derive the expressions of the vector and axial current from a chiral Lagrangian restricted to nucleons and pions. They display mixing terms between the axial and vector currents. We study the modifications in the nuclear medium of the coupling constants of the axial current, namely the pion decay constant and the nucleonic axial one due to the requirements of chiral symmetry. We express the renormalizations in terms of the local scalar pion density. The latter also governs the quark condensate evolu- tion and we discuss the link between this evolution and the renormaliza- tions. In the case of the nucleon axial coupling constant this renormali- zation corresponds to a new type of exchange currents, with two exchanged pions. We give an estimate for the resulting quenching. Although moderate it helps explaining the quenching experimentally observed.

Influence of pion-delta-hole configuration on the rho meson mass spectrum in dense hadronic matter

We discuss medium modification of the rho meson originating from its coupling to in medium quasi-pions and delta-hole states. This medium effect leads to a marked structure of the rho meson strength function in the $500 MeV$ invariant mass region. We suggest that this effect may provide an explanation of the structure observed by the DLS collaboration in the $Ca+Ca/C+C$ ratio at $1 GeV/u$.

The semi-classical approach to the exclusive electron scattering

The semiclassical approach, successfully applied in the past to the inelastic, inclusive electron scattering off nuclei, is extended to the treatment of exclusive processes. The final states interaction is accounted for in the mean field approximation, respecting the Pauli principle. The impact on the exclusive cross section of the shape of the potential binding the nucleons into the nucleus and of the distortion of the outgoing nucleon wave are explored. The exclusive scattering is found to be quite sensitive to the mean field final states interaction, unlike the inclusive one. Indeed we verify that the latter is not affected, as implied by unitarity, by the distortion of the outgoing nucleon wave except for the effect of relativity, which is modest in the range of momenta up to about 500 MeV/c. Furthermore, depending upon the correlations between the directions of the outgoing and of the initial nucleon, the exclusive cross-section turns out to be remarkably sensitive to the shape of the potential binding the nucleons. These correlations also critically affect the domain in the missing energy-- missing momentum plane where the exclusive process occurs.

Rho Meson Propagation and Dilepton Enhancement in Hot Hadronic Matter

A realistic model for the free rho meson with coupling to two-pion states is employed to calculate the rho propagator in a hot and dense hadron gas. The medium modifications are based on hadronic rescattering processes: intermediate two-pion states are renormalized through interactions with surrounding nucleons and deltas, and rho meson scattering is considered off nucleons, deltas, pions and kaons. Constraints from gauge invariance as well as the full off-shell dynamics of the interactions are accounted for. Within the vector dominance model we apply the resulting in-medium rho spectral function to compute $e^+e^-$ production rates from $π^+π^-$ annihilation. The calculation of corresponding $e^+e^-$ spectra as recently measured in central collisions of heavy-ions at CERN/SpS energies gives reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

Low-Mass $e^+e^-$ Pairs from in-Medium $ρ$ Meson Propagation

Based on a realistic model for the rho meson in free space we investigate it's medium modifications in a hot hadron gas generated by hadronic rescattering processes, i.e. renormalization of intermediate two-pion states as well as direct rho meson scattering off hadrons. Within the vector dominance model the resulting in-medium rho spectral function is applied to calculate $e^+e^-$ spectra as recently measured in heavy-ion collisions at CERN-SpS energies in the CERES experiment.

Pion-pair formation and the pion dispersion relation in a hot pion gas

The possibility of pion--pair formation in a hot pion gas, based on the bosonic gap equation, is pointed out and discussed in detail. The critical temperature for condensation of pion pairs (Evans--Rashid transition) is determined as a function of the pion density. As for fermions, this phase transition is signaled by the appearance of a pole in the two--particle propagator. In bose systems there exists a second, lower critical temperature, associated with the appearance of the single--particle condensate. Between the two critical temperatures the pion dispersion relation changes from the usual quasiparticle dispersion to a Bogoliubov--like dispersion relation at low momenta. This generalizes the non-relativistic result for an attractive bose gas by Evans et al. Possible consequences for the inclusive pion spectra measured in heavy--ion collisions at ultra--relativistic energies are discussed.

Pions in the nuclear medium

We discuss various aspects of pion physics in the nuclear medium. We first study s-wave pion-nucleus interaction in connection with chiral symmetry restoration and quark condensate in the nuclear medium. We then adress the question of p-wave pion-nucleus interaction and collective pionic modes in nuclei and draw the consequences for in medium $ππ$ correlations especially in the scalar-isoscalar channel. We finally discuss the modification of the rho meson mass spectrum at finite density and/or temperature in connection with relativistic heavy ion collisions.
