Measurement of K+ production cross section by 8 GeV protons using high energy neutrino interactions in the SciBooNE detector

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports K+ production cross section and rate measurements using high energy daughter muon neutrino scattering data off the SciBar polystyrene (C8H8) target in the SciBooNE detector. The K+ mesons are produced by 8 GeV protons striking a beryllium target in Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam line (BNB). Using observed neutrino and antineutrino events in SciBooNE, we measure d2σ/dpdΩ = (5.34 \times 0.76) mb/(GeV/c \times sr) for p + Be -> K+ + X at mean K+ energy of 3.9 GeV and angle (with respect to the proton beam direction) of 3.7 degrees, corresponding to the selected K+ sample. Compared to Monte Carlo predictions using previous higher energy K+ production measurements, this measurement, which uses the NUANCE neutrino interaction generator, is consistent with a normalization factor of 0.85\times0.12. This agreement is evidence that the extrapolation of the higher energy K+ measurements to an 8 GeV beam energy using Feynman scaling is valid. This measurement reduces the error on the K+ production cross section from 40% to 14%.

Measurement of inclusive charged current interactions on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of inclusive charged current interactions of muon neutrinos on carbon with an average energy of 0.8 GeV using the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam. We compare our measurement with two neutrino interaction simulations: NEUT and NUANCE. The charged current interaction rates (product of flux and cross section) are extracted by fitting the muon kinematics, with a precision of 6-15% for the energy dependent and 3% for the energy integrated analyses. We also extract CC inclusive interaction cross sections from the observed rates, with a precision of 10-30% for the energy dependent and 8% for the energy integrated analyses. This is the first measurement of the CC inclusive cross section on carbon around 1 GeV. These results can be used to convert previous SciBooNE cross section ratio measurements to absolute cross section values.

Structure and frictional properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of Cu nanoparticles modified by dialkyldithiophosphate

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of dialkyldithiophosphate (DDP) modified Cu nanoparticles were prepared. The structure, microfrictional behaviors and adhesion of the LB films were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic/friction force microscopy (AFM/FFM). Our results showed that the modified Cu nanoparticles have a typical core-shell structure and fine film-forming ability. The images of AFM/FFM showed that LB films of modified Cu nanoparticles were composed of many nanoparticles arranged closely and orderly and the nanoparticles had favorable behaviors of lower friction. The friction loop of the films indicated that the friction force was affected prominently by the surface slope of the Cu nanoparticles and the microfrictional behaviors showed obvious "ratchet effect". The adhesion experiment showed that the modified Cu nanoparticle had a very small adhesive force. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Measurement of neutral current coherent neutral pion production on carbon in a few-GeV neutrino beam

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports a measurement of neutral current coherent neutral pion production on carbon by a muon neutrino beam with average energy 0.8 GeV. The separation of coherent from inclusive neutral pion production has been improved by detecting recoil protons from resonant neutral pion production. We measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent neutral pion production to total charged current cross sections to be (1.16 +/- 0.24) x 10-2. The ratio of charged current coherent pion to neutral current coherent pion production is calculated to be 0.14+0.30 -0.28, using our published charged current coherent pion measurement.

Measurement of Inclusive Neutral Current Neutral Pion Production on Carbon in a Few-GeV Neutrino Beam

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports inclusive neutral current neutral pion production by a muon neutrino beam on a polystyrene target (C8H8). We obtain (7.7 \pm 0.5(stat.) \pm 0.5 (sys.)) x 10^(-2) as the ratio of the neutral current neutral pion production to total charged current cross section; the mean energy of neutrinos producing detected neutral pions is 1.1 GeV. The result agrees with the Rein-Sehgal model implemented in our neutrino interaction simulation program with nuclear effects. The spectrum shape of the neutral pion momentum and angle agree with the model. We also measure the ratio of the neutral current coherent pion production to total charged current cross section to be (0.7 \pm 0.4) x 10^(-2).

Seesaw mechanism in three flavors

We advance a method used to analyse the neutrino properties (masses and mixing) in the seesaw mechanism. Assuming the hierarchical Dirac and light neutrino masses we establish rather simple relations between the light and the heavy neutrino parameters in the favored region of the solar and the atmospheric neutrino experiments. A empirical condition satisfied by the RH mixing angles is obtained.

Resonance in the seesaw mechanism

We study the RH neutrino properties from the low energy neutrino data in the seesaw mechanism. Reonance behavior is found for the right-handed (RH) mixing angle as a function of light neutrino mass ratios in two favored region of the solar neutrino problem and, at the resonance point, the two corresponding RH Majorana neutrino masses are degenerate. This phenomenon is similar with that in the matter-enhanced conversion of neutrinos. The physical significance it infers for the electron neutrino mass and other neutrino parameters is discussed.

Phenomenological analysis of properties of the RH Majorana neutrino in the seesaw mechanism

As an extension of our previous work in the seesaw mechanism, we analyze the influence of $U_{e3}$ on the properties (masses and mixing) of the RH Majorana neutrinos in three flavors. The quasidegenerate light neutrinos case is also considered. Assuming the hierarchical Dirac neutrino masses, we find the heavy Majorana neutrino mass spectrum is either hierarchical or partial degenerate if $θ_{23}^ν$ is large. We show that degenerate RH Majorana masses correspond to maximal RH mixing angle while hierarchical ones correspond to the RH mixing angles which scale linearly with the mass ratios of the Dirac neutrino masses. An interesting analogue with the behavior of the matter-enhanced neutrino conversion is also presented.

Mixing of three neutrinos in matter

Explicit analytical expression is derived for mixing matrix of three neutrinos in matter using a set of direct vacuum physical parameters. Results are presented in simple, symmetrical form. The physical contents are more clear than using of traditional mixing angles. There is no problem about mixing orders.

Decoupled oscillations and resonances of three neutrinos in matter

In a previous paper, we gave a new theoretical framework in which three neutrino mixing in matter are discussed. Rigorous analytical solutions are obtained. In present paper an approximate method is developed for studying three flavor neutrino oscillations in matter in the new framework. Using condition of $Δm_{1}^{2}\ll Δm_{2}^{2}$, decoupled resonances, which is discovered by Kuo {\it et al.} previously, are obtained without small angle approximation. Calculation and approximation is consistent and rigorous. All the formulae appear in simple symmetric form and some physical characteristic are more explicit. Around the two resonant points, the mass eigenvalue whose eigenfunction does not take part in the oscillation process, can be easily calculated to higher precision. We find, the oscillation amplitude is dominated by vacuum mixing and is smaller than 1 for smaller A resonance, but it is not in the larger A. This is characteristic for the three flavor oscillations, but do not exist in two flavor.

Anomalous Dimension in the Solution of the Barenblatt's Equation

A new method is presented to obtain the anomalous dimension in the solution of the Barenblatt's equation. The result is the same as that in the renormalization group (RG) approach. It gives us insight on the perturbative solution of the Barenblatt's equation in the RG approach. Based on this discussion, an improvement is made to take into account, in more complete way, the nonlinear effect, which is included in the Heaviside function in higher orders. This improved result is better than that in RG approach.

Advance in dynamical spontaneous symmetry breaking

Recently, a condition is derived for a nontrivial solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation to be accompanied by a Goldstone bound state in a special quantum electrodynamics model. This result is extended and a new form of the Goldstone theorem is obtained in a general quantum field theory framework.
