On the Behavior of Journal Impact Factor Rank-Order Distribution

An empirical law for the rank-order behavior of journal impact factors is found. Using an extensive data base on impact factors including journals on Education, Agrosciences, Geosciences, Biosciences and Environ- mental, Chemical, Computer, Engineering, Material, Mathematical, Medical and Physical Sciences we have found extremely good fits out- performing other rank-order models. Some extensions to other areas of knowledge are discussed.

Modeling the Searching Behavior of Social Monkeys

We discuss various features of the trajectories of spider monkeys looking for food in a tropical forest, as observed recently in an extensive {\it in situ} study. Some of the features observed can be interpreted as the result of social interactions. In addition, a simple model of deterministic walk in a random environment reproduces the observed angular correlations between successive steps, and in some cases, the emergence of Lévy distributions for the length of the steps.

Expansion-modificaction systems: an explanation for long range correlations in DNA

Based on a model first studied in [Physical Review A, vol. 43, 5240-5260,1991] properties of correlation function for expansion-modification systems are developed. The existence of several characteristic exponents is proved. The relationship of this fact with long-range correlation in DNA is stablished. Comparison between theoretical exponents and those obtained from simulation and real sequences are also showed.
