Co/Nb/Co low field superconducting spin switch

We report experiments on a superconducting spin switch based on technologically relevant materials as elemental ferromagnetic Co and elemental superconducting Nb. The Co/Nb/Co structure exhibits inverse spin switch effect, can be operated at liquid helium temperature and can switch from superconductive to normal state in rather weak applied magnetic fields. Relevant critical currents as a function of temperature and magnetic field as well as preparation of superconductive or resistive state are addressed here.

Experimental investigation of flux motion in exponentially shaped Josephson junctions

We report experimental and numerical analysis of expontentially shaped long Josephson junctions with lateral current injection. Quasi-linear flux flow branches are observed in the current-voltage characteristic of the junctions in the absence of magnetic field. A strongly asymmetric response to an applied magnetic field is also exhibited by the junctions. Experimental data are found in agreement with numerical predictions and demonstrate the existence of a geometry-induced potential experienced by the flux quanta in nonuniform width junctions.

Experimental realization of a relativistic fluxon ratchet

We report the observation of the ratchet effect for a relativistic flux quantum trapped in an annular Josephson junction embedded in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. In such a solid state system mechanical quantities are proportional to electrical quantities, so that the ratchet effect represents the realization of a relativistic-flux-quantum-based diode. Mean static voltage response, equivalent to directed fluxon motion, is experimentally demonstrated in such a diode for deterministic current forcing both in the overdamped and in the underdamped dynamical regime. In the underdamped regime, the recently predicted phenomenon of current reversal is also recovered in our fluxon ratchet.

Low frequency transport measurements in GdSr2RuCu2O8

Low frequency transport measurements are performed on GdSr$_2$RuCu$_2$O$_8$ pellets. The observed current-voltage curves are qualitatively explained in the framework of a simple phenomenological model accounting for coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the sample. A Curie temperature $T_{cM}$=133 K and a superconducting critical temperature $T_{cS}$=18 K, with an onset temperature $T_{cO}$=33 K, are extracted from the analysis of the current-voltage curves.

Josephson effect and tunneling spectroscopy in Nb/Al2O3/Al/MgB2 thin films junctions

We report the demonstration of dc and ac Josephson effects as well as tunneling spectroscopy measurements on Nb/Al2O3/Al/MgB2 thin films heterostructures. Data on dc Josephson effect suggest the presence of two characteristic critical currents possibly accounted for the presence of two gaps in the MgB2 film. Tunneling spectroscopy measurements confirm this two-gap scenario and are explained with the presence of tunneling from both dirty limit and clean limit regions, reflecting two different order parameter amplitudes. The behavior of these two gaps is found in good agreement with the predictions of a recently proposed multigap theory.

Coupling of Josephson flux-flow oscillators to an external RC load

We investigate by numerical simulations the behavior of the power dissipated in a resistive load capacitively coupled to a Josephson flux flow oscillator and compare the results to those obtained for a d.c. coupled purely resistive load. Assuming realistic values for the parameters R and C, both in the high- and in the low-Tc case the power is large enough to allow the operation of such a device in applications.
