MOND's acceleration scale as a fundamental quantity

Some quantum-cosmic scaling relations indicate that the MOND acceleration parameter a_0 could be a fundamental quantity ruling the self-gravitating structures, ranging from stars and globular clusters up to superclusters of galaxies and the whole observed universe. We discuss such coincidence relations starting from the Dirac quantization condition ruling the masses of primordial black holes.

Primordial black holes, astrophysical systems and the Eddington-Weinberg relation

Starting from a quantization relation for primordial black holes, it is shown that quantum fluctuations can play a fundamental role in determining the effective scales of self-gravitating astrophysical systems. Furthermore the Eddington-Weinberg relation between the current scale of the observed universe to the Planck constant (the standard action unit) is naturally derived. Finally, such an approach allows to recover the current value of the cosmological constant.

Astrophysical structures from primordial quantum black holes

The characteristic sizes of astrophysical structures, up to the whole observed Universe, can be recovered, in principle, assuming that gravity is the overall interaction assembling systems starting from microscopic scales, whose order of magnitude is ruled by the Planck length and the related Compton wavelength. This result agrees with the absence of screening mechanisms for the gravitational interaction and could be connected to the presence of Yukawa corrections in the Newtonian potential which introduce typical interaction lengths. This result directly comes out from quantization of primordial black holes and then characteristic interaction lengths directly emerge from quantum field theory.

New Results on the Phase Diagram of the FFXY Model: A Twisted CFT Approach

The issue of the number, nature and sequence of phase transitions in the fully frustrated XY (FFXY) model is a highly non trivial one due to the complex interplay between its continuous and discrete degrees of freedom. In this contribution we attack such a problem by means of a twisted conformal field theory (CFT) approach and show how it gives rise to the U (1)$\otimes Z_{2}$ symmetry and to the whole spectrum of excitations of the FFXY model.

A conformal field theory description of magnetic flux fractionalization in Josephson junction ladders

We show how the recently proposed effective theory for a Quantum Hall system at "paired states" filling v=1 (Mod. Phys. Lett. A 15 (2000) 1679; Nucl. Phys. B641 (2002) 547), the twisted model (TM), well adapts to describe the phenomenology of Josephson Junction ladders (JJL) in the presence of defects. In particular it is shown how naturally the phenomenon of flux fractionalization takes place in such a description and its relation with the discrete symmetries present in the TM. Furthermore we focus on closed geometries, which enable us to analyze the topological properties of the ground state of the system in relation to the presence of half flux quanta.

A twisted conformal field theory description of dissipative quantum mechanics

We show how the recently proposed CFT for a bilayer Quantum Hall system at filling nu=m/pm+2, the Twisted Model (TM), is equivalent to the system of two massless scalar bosons with a magnetic boundary interaction as introduced in Nucl. Phys. B443 (1995) 444, at the so called magic points. We are then able to describe, within such a framework, the dissipative quantum mechanics of a particle confined to a plane and subject to an external magnetic field normal to it. Such an analogy is further developed in terms of the TM boundary states, by describing the interaction between an impurity with a Hall system.

Twisted CFT and bilayer Quantum Hall systems

We identify the impurity interactions of the recently proposed CFT description of a bilayer Quantum Hall system at filling nu =m/(pm+2) in Mod. Phys. Lett. A 15 (2000) 1679. Such a CFT is obtained by m-reduction on the one layer system, with a resulting pairing symmetry and presence of quasi-holes. For the m=2 case boundary terms are shown to describe an impurity interaction which allows for a localized tunnel of the Kondo problem type. The presence of an anomalous fixed point is evidenced at finite coupling which is unstable with respect to unbalance and flows to a vacuum state with no quasi-holes.

Paired states on a torus

We analyze the modular properties of the effective CFT description for paired states, proposed in cond-mat/0003453, corresponding to the non-standard filling nu =1/(p+1). We construct its characters for the twisted and the untwisted sector and the diagonal partition function. We show that the degrees of freedom entering our partition function naturally go to complete a Z_2-orbifold construction of the CFT for the Halperin state. Different behaviours for the p even and p odd cases are also studied. Finally it is shown that the tunneling phenomenon selects out a twist invariant CFT which is identified with the Moore-Read model.

Tunnelling Effects in a Brane System and Quantum Hall Physics

We argue that a system of interacting D-branes, generalizing a recent proposal, can be modelled as a Quantum Hall fluid. We show that tachyon condensation in such a system is equivalent to one particle tunnelling. In a conformal field theory effective description, that induces a transition from a theory with central charge c=2 to a theory with c=3/2, with a corresponding symmetry enhancement.

The global phase diagram of a modular invariant two dimensional statistical model

A generalization of the Coulomb Gas model with modular SL(2, Z)-symmetry allows for a discrete infinity of phases which are characterized by the condensation of dyonic pseudoparticles and the breaking of parity and time reversal. Here we study the phase diagram of such a model by using renormalization group techniques. Then the symmetry SL(2,Z) acting on the two-dimensional parameter space gives us a nested shape of its global phase diagram and all the infrared stable fixed points. Finally we propose a connection with the 2-dimensional Conformal Field Theory description of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect.

A conformal field theory description of the paired and parafermionic states in the quantum Hall effect

We extend the construction of the effective conformal field theory for the Jain hierarchical fillings proposed in cond-mat/9912287 to the description of a quantum Hall fluid at non standard fillings nu=m/(pm+2). The chiral primary fields are found by using a procedure which induces twisted boundary conditions on the m scalar fields; they appear as composite operators of a charged and neutral component. The neutral modes describe parafermions and contribute to the ground state wave function with a generalized Pfaffian term. Correlators of Ne electrons in the presence of quasi-hole excitations are explicitly given for m=2.

A twisted conformal field theory description of the Quantum Hall Effect

We construct an effective conformal field theory by using a procedure which induces twisted boundary conditions for the fundamental scalar fields. That allows to describe a quantum Hall fluid at Jain hierarchical filling, nu=m/(2pm+1), in terms of one charged scalar field and m-1 neutral ones. Then the resulting algebra of the chiral primary fields is U(1)xW_m. Finally the ground state wave functions are given as correlators of appropriate composite fields (a-electrons).

Study of the critical properties of the Quantum Hall Fluid in the framework of a dual statistical model

By using Renormalization Group methods we analyze the description of the Quantum Hall Fluid in terms of a dual plasma with dyons as effective degrees of freedom. The physical interpretation of the parameters of the model as the longitudinal and Hall conductance togheter with their scaling properties allow for the determination of the critical index. The universality of the critical properties result as a consequence of the generalized duality symmetry of the model.

A dual 2D model for the Quantum Hall Fluid

We present a dual two dimensional model for the Quantum Hall Fluid depending on two parameters and show that this model has topologically non-trivial vacua which are infrared stable fixed points of the Renormalization Group. The model has a discrete (modular) symmetry which reproduces the fenomenological law of corresponding states and allows for an unified description of the critical points corresponding to Hall plateaus in terms of a 2 dimensional Conformal Field Theory.

FQHE and Jain's approach on the torus

By using the explicit knowledge of the lowest energy single particle wave functions in the presence of an {\it arbitrary} magnetic field, we extend to the case of a torus Jain's idea of looking at the FQHE as a manifestation of an integer effect for {\it composite fermions}. We show that this can be realized thanks to a redefinition of the vacuum state that is explicitly collective in nature. We also discuss the relationship of this approach with the hierarchical scheme and with the characterization of the Hall states in terms of $W_{1+\infty}$ algebras and 2D conformal field theories.
