The pulsed light curves of Her X-1 as observed by BeppoSAX

We report on the timing analysis of the observation of the X-ray binary pulsar Her X-1 performed during the BeppoSAX Science Verification Phase. The observation covered more that two full orbital cycles near the maximum of the main-on in the 35 day cycle of Her X-1. We present the pulse profiles from 0.1 to 100 keV. Major changes are present below 1 keV, where the appearance of a broad peak is interpreted as re-processing from the inner part of the accretion disk, and above 10 keV, where the pulse profile is less structured and the main peak is appreciably harder. The hardness ratios show complex changes with pulse phase at different energies.

The broad-band (0.1-200 keV) spectrum of Her X-1 observed with BeppoSAX

The X-ray pulsar Her X-1 was observed for more than two orbital cycles near the maximum of the 35 day X-ray intensity cycle by the Narrow Field Instruments on-board the BeppoSAX satellite. We present the first simultaneous measurement of the 0.1-200 keV spectrum. Three distinct continuum components are evident in the phase averaged spectrum: a low energy excess, modeled as a 0.1 keV blackbody; a power-law and a high energy cut-off. Superposed on this continuum are Fe L and K emission features at 1.0 and 6.5 keV, respectively, and a ~40 keV cyclotron absorption feature. The cyclotron feature can be clearly seen in raw count spectra. We present the properties of the cyclotron feature with unprecedented precision and discuss the indications given by this measurement on the physical properties of the emitting region.

Spectral Properties of the Prompt X-ray emission and Afterglow from the Gamma-Ray Burst of 28 February 1997

We report high-energy spectral data of the prompt emission of GRB970228 and its X-ray afterglow. We establish that the nature of the X-ray afterglow emission is non-thermal and similar to the later portion of GRB970228. Our data can be used to discriminate different emission models of GRB afterglows. While cooling of excited compact objects can be ruled out, fireball models are constrained in the physics of the radiation emission processes and their evolution.

The Vela X-1 pulse-averaged spectrum as observed by BeppoSAX

We report on the 20 ksec observation of Vela X-1 performed by BeppoSAX on 1996 July 14 during its Science Verification Phase. We observed the source in two intensity states, characterized by a change in luminosity of a factor ~ 2, and a change in absorption of a factor ~ 10. The single Narrow Field Instrument pulse-averaged spectra are well fit by a power law with significantly different indices. This is in agreement with the observed changes of slope in the wide-band spectrum: a first change of slope at ~ 10 keV, and a second one at ~ 35 keV. To mimic this behaviour we used a double power law modified by an exponential cutoff --- the so-called NPEX model --- to fit the whole 2-100 keV continuum. This functional is able to adequately describe the data, expecially the low intensity state. We found an absorption-like feature at ~ 57 keV, very well visible in the ratio performed with the Crab spectrum. We interpreted this feature as a cyclotron resonance, corresponding to a neutron star surface magnetic strength of 4.9 x 10^12 Gauss. The BeppoSAX data do not require the presence of a cyclotron resonance at ~ 27 keV as found in earlier works.

Final performances of the X-ray Mirrors of the JET-X telescope

The Joint European Telesscope (JET-X) is one of the core scientific instruments of the SPECTRUM-X-Gamma mission. JET-X was designed to study X-ray emissions in the band 0.3-10 KeV. Its angular resolution is better than 20 arcsec; the values of the effective areas are 161 cm2 at 1.5 KeV and 69 cm2 at 8 Kev (for one telescope). The value of the HEW circle in function of the off-axis angle is presented; it is found to be below 20 arcsec at 1.5 Kev and around 23 arcsec at 8 KeV up to an off-axis angle of 12 arcmin.

A BeppoSAX observation of 3C273: broadband spectrum and detection of a low-energy absorption feature

We report the results of a 3C273 observation performed during the Science Verification Phase (SVP) of the BeppoSax satellite. The broad-band spectrum is well represented by a power-law between 1 keV and 200 keV. The spectral slope is flat (Γ~1.6) with a weak emission line at ~ 6.4 keV (rest frame) of EW ~ 30 eV. Below 1 keV, a deviation from a power-law due to an absorption feature plus a soft component is present. This is the first time that a feature in absorption at ~ 0.5 keV (observer frame) is unambiguously detected in 3C273.

A BeppoSAX observation of the coronal X-ray emission of the active binary VY Ari

We present a study of the X-ray coronal emission from the active binary VY Ari, using data from both the Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) and the Medium Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (MECS) instruments on-board the X-ray satellite BeppoSAX. Using these instruments, the X-ray spectrum of VY Ari can be studied across two full decades of energy, from 0.1 to 10 keV. The spectrum is well fit, across the whole spectral range, with an optically thin plasma MEKAL model with two discrete temperature components, and with an inferred coronal abundance $\feh \simeq -0.4$, corresponding to the average typical value of the photospheric abundance in RS CVn-type binaries.

BeppoSAX observation of the X-ray binary pulsar Vela X-1

We report on the spectral (pulse averaged) and timing analysis of the ~ 20 ksec observation of the X-ray binary pulsar Vela X-1 performed during the BeppoSAX Science Verification Phase. The source was observed in two different intensity states: the low state is probably due to an erratic intensity dip and shows a decrease of a factor ~ 2 in intensity, and a factor 10 in Nh. We have not been able to fit the 2-100 keV continuum spectrum with the standard (for an X--ray pulsar) power law modified by a high energy cutoff because of the flattening of the spectrum in ~ 10-30 keV. The timing analysis confirms previous results: the pulse profile changes from a five-peak structure for energies less than 15 keV, to a simpler two-peak shape at higher energies. The Fourier analysis shows a very complex harmonic component: up to 23 harmonics are clearly visible in the power spectrum, with a dominant first harmonic for low energy data, and a second one as the more prominent for energies greater than 15 keV. The aperiodic component in the Vela X-1 power spectrum presents a knee at about 1 Hz. The pulse period, corrected for binary motion, is 283.206 +/- 0.001 sec.

Discovery of the X-Ray Afterglow of the Gamma-Ray Burst of February 28 1997

Here we report the discovery in the X-ray band of the first afterglow of a gamma-ray burst. It was detected and quickly positioned by the Beppo-SAX satellite on 1997 February 28 (GRB970228). The X-ray afterglow source was detected with the X-ray telescopes aboard the same satellite about eight hours after the burst and faded away in a few days with a power law decay function. The energetic content of the X-ray afterglow results to be a significant fraction of gamma-ray burst energetics. The Beppo-SAX detection and fast imaging of GRB970228 started a multiwavelength campaign that lead to the identification of a fading optical source in a position consistent with the X-ray source.

First Results from the MECS on board BeppoSAX

In this contribution we discuss briefly a few calibration items relevant to the data analysis and present some preliminary scientific results. The discussion on instrumental topics focuses on the response matrix and Point Spread Function (PSF). In the scientific results section we discuss a first analysis of the two Seyferts MCG 6-30-15 and NGC 4151 and of the Cosmic X-ray Background.
