Nuclear matter distributions in the neutron-rich carbon isotopes $^{14-17}$C from intermediate-energy proton elastic scattering in inverse kinematics

The absolute differential cross sections for small-angle proton elastic scattering off the nuclei $^{12,14-17}$C have been measured in inverse kinematics at energies near 700 MeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for the recoil protons. The projectile scattering angles were measured with multi-wire tracking detectors. The radial nuclear matter density distributions and the root-mean-square nuclear matter radii were deduced from the measured cross sections using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. A possible neutron halo structure in $^{15}$C, $^{16}$C and $^{17}$C is discussed. The obtained data show evidence for a halo structure in the $^{15}$C nucleus.

Nuclear-matter distribution in the proton-rich nuclei $^7$Be and $^8$B from intermediate energy proton elastic scattering in inverse kinematics

Absolute differential cross sections for elastic $p^7$Be and $p^8$B small-angle scattering were measured in inverse kinematics at an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR was used as an active target to detect the recoil protons. The projectile tracking and isotope identification were performed with multi-wire proportional chambers and scintillation detectors. The measured cross sections were analysed using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. The root-mean-square (rms) nuclear matter radii $R_{\rm m} = 2.42 (4)$ fm for $^7$Be and $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm for $^8$B were obtained. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a proton halo structure with the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. A comparison of the deduced experimental radii is displayed with existing experimental and theoretical data.

Halo structure of $^8$B determined from intermediate energy proton elastic scattering in inverse kinematics

The absolute differential cross section for small-angle proton elastic scattering on the proton-rich $^8$B nucleus has been measured in inverse kinematics for the first time. The experiment was performed using a secondary radioactive beam with an energy of 0.7 GeV/u at GSI, Darmstadt. The active target, namely hydrogen-filled time projection ionization chamber IKAR, was used to measure the energy, angle and vertex point of the recoil protons. The scattering angle of the projectiles was simultaneously determined by the tracking detectors. The measured differential cross section is analyzed on the basis of the Glauber multiple scattering theory using phenomenological nuclear-density distributions with two free parameters. The radial density distribution deduced for $^8$B exhibits a halo structure with the root-mean-square (rms) matter radius $R_{\rm m} = 2.58 (6)$ fm and the rms halo radius $R_{\rm h} = 4.24 (25)$ fm. The results on $^8$B are compared to those on the mirror nucleus $^8$Li investigated earlier by the same method. A comparison is also made with previous experimental results and theoretical predictions for both nuclei.

Taking into Account the Centre-of-Mass Correlations in the Cross Sections for Elastic Scattering of Intermediate Energy Protons on the Exotic Nuclei $^6$He and $^8$He

We calculate the differential cross sections for proton elastic scattering on the exotic halo nuclei $^6$He and $^8$He at energies around $\sim$0.7 GeV at the momentum transfers squared up to 0.30 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ and investigate the influence of the nucleon centre-of-mass correlations on the calculated cross sections. In particular, we show that the approximate account of the centre-of-mass correlations used previously considerably overestimates the cross sections at high values of the momentum transfer.

Energy dependence of W values for protons in hydrogen

The mean energy $W$ required to produce an ion pair in molecular hydrogen has been obtained for protons in the energy range between 1 MeV and 4.5 MeV. The W values were derived from the existing experimental data on elastic {\it $π^-$p} scattering at the beam energy of 40 GeV. In the experiment, the ionization chamber IKAR filled with hydrogen at a pressure of 10 at served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for recoil protons. For selected events of elastic scattering, the ionization yield produced by recoil protons was measured in IKAR, while the energy was determined kinematically through the scattering angles of the incident particles measured with a system of multi-wire proportional chambers. The ionization produced by $α$-particles from $α$-sources of $^{234}$U deposited on the chamber electrodes was used for absolute normalization of the W values. The energy dependence of $W$ for protons in H$_2$ shows an anomalous increase of $W$ with increasing energy in the measured energy range. At the energy of 4.76 MeV, the ionization yield for alpha particles is by 2\% larger than that for protons.

Sensitivity of reaction cross sections to halo nucleus density distributions

In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus--nucleus reaction cross sections $σ_R$ to the nuclear matter distributions in exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated the values of $σ_R$ for scattering of $^6$He, $^{11}$Li, and $^{19}$C nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon. The calculations were performed in the "rigid target" approximation to the Glauber theory, different shapes of the nuclear density distributions in $^6$He, $^{11}$Li, and $^{19}$C being assumed.

Mechanism of Pion Production in $alpha$p Scattering at 1 GeV/nucleon

The one-pion and two-pion production in the p(alpha, alpha prime)X reaction at an energy of E{alpha} = 4.2 GeV has been studied by simultaneous registration of the scattered alpha particles and the secondary pion or proton. The obtained results demonstrate that the inelastic alpha-particle scattering on the proton at the energy of the experiment proceeds either through excitation and decay of Delta resonance in the projectile or through excitation in the target proton of the Roper resonance, which decays mainly on a nucleon and a pion or a nucleon and a sigma meson - system of two pions in the isospin I = 0, S-wave.

Nuclear Radii of Unstable Nuclei

In the presented review we discuss the problem of extraction the parameters of nuclear matter and charge distribution in stable and unstable isotopes. A substantial amount of information on the nuclear radii and other distribution parameters in light exotic nuclei has been obtained from experiments on intermediate-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The analyses of these experiments is usually performed with the help of the Glauber Theory. We review the main assumptions the Glauber Theory and show how this theoretical approach is used to calculate reaction and interaction cross sections. We also show how radii of nuclear matter can be obtained from the analysis of the experimental data on reaction cross sections. In the provided analysis reaction cross sections were calculated in optical and rigid approximations of the Glauber Theory as well as using explicit expressions. Numerical calculations of Glauber's explicit expressions for reaction cross sections were done using Monte Carlo technique. Recent results of the precise measurements of charge radii of light exotic nuclei which were done using the laser-spectroscopy technique as well as the method of the investigation of the nuclear matter distributions in proton elastic scattering experiments in inverse kinematics are also discussed.
