Determination of the optical properties of La{2-x}Ba{x}CuO{4} for several dopings, including the anomalous x=1/8 phase

The optical properties the high-temperature superconductor La{2-x}Ba{x}CuO{4} have been measured over a wide frequency and temperature range for light polarized in the a-b planes and along the c axis. Three different Ba concentrations have been examined, x=0.095 with a critical temperature T_c=32 K, x=0.125 with T_c ~ 2.4 K, and x=0.145 with T_c ~ 24 K. The in-plane behavior of the optical conductivity for these materials at high temperature is described by a Drude-like response with a scattering rate that decreases with temperature. Below T_c in the x=0.095 and 0.145 materials there is a clear signature of the formation of a SC state in the optical properties allowing the strength of the condensate (ρ_{s0}) and the penetration depth to be determined. In the anomalous 1/8 phase, some spectral weight shifts from lower to higher frequency (above 300 cm^{-1}) on cooling below the spin-ordering temperature T_{so} ~ 42 K, associated with the onset of spin-stripe order; we discuss alternative interpretations in terms of a conventional density-wave gap versus the response to pair-density-wave SC. The disappearance of the low-frequency spectral weight at low temperature may indicate the formation of a 2D SC state below the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at about 16 K prior to the onset of bulk 3D SC. The two dopings for which a SC response is observed both fall on the universal scaling line ρ_{s0}/8 ~ 4.4 σ_{dc} T_c. The optical properties for light polarized along the c axis reveal an insulating character dominated by lattice vibrations, superimposed on a weak electronic background. In the x=0.095 and 0.145 materials a Josephson plasma edge is observed in the reflectance below T_c. No Josephson plasma edge is observed in the 1/8 phase, suggesting that the presence of charge and spin order frustrates the formation of a supercurrent and bulk 3D SC.

Universal scaling of length, time, and energy for cuprate superconductors based on photoemission measurements of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

A microscopic scaling relation linking the normal and superconducting states of the cuprates in the presence of a pseudogap is presented using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. This scaling relation, complementary to the bulk universal scaling relation embodied by Homes' law, explicitly connects the momentum-dependent amplitude of the d-wave superconducting order parameter at T\sim0 to quasiparticle scattering mechanisms operative at T\gtrsimTc. The form of the scaling is proposed to be a consequence of the marginal Fermi-liquid phenomenology and the inherently strong dissipation of the normal pseudogap state of the cuprates.

Continuous magnetic and structural phase transitions in Fe1+yTe

We report a sequence of continuous phase transformations in iron telluride, Fe1+yTe (y~0.1), which is observed by combining neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements on single crystal samples. While a gradual increase of magnetic scattering near the wave vector (0.5, 0, 0.5) is seen below T = 70 K, a temperature where the discontinuous first order magneto-structural phase transition is found in systems with small y (< 0.06), the reduction of the lattice symmetry in Fe1.1Te only occurs at Ts = 63 K. Below TN = 57.5 K the long-range magnetic order develops, whose incommensurate wave vector Qm varies with temperature. Finally, at Tm ~ 45 K the system enters the low-T phase, where Qm is locked at (0.48, 0, 0.5). We conclude that these instabilities are weak compared to the strength of the underlying interactions, and we suggest that the impact of the Fe interstitials on the transitions can be treated with random-field models.

Local Structure of the Superconductor K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2: Evidence of Large Structural Disorder

The local structure of superconducting single crystals of K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2 with Tc = 32.6 K was studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Near-edge spectra reveal that the average valence of Fe is 2+. The room temperature structure about the Fe, K and Se sites was examined by iron, selenium and potassium K-edge measurements. The structure about the Se and Fe sites shows a high degree of order in the nearest neighbor Fe-Se bonds. On the other hand, the combined Se and K local structure measurements reveal a very high level of structural disorder in the K layers. Temperature dependent measurements at the Fe sites show that the Fe-Se atomic correlation follows that of the Fe-As correlation in the superconductor LaFeAsO0.89F0.11 - having the same effective Einstein temperature (stiffness). In K0.8Fe1.6+xSe2, the nearest neighbor Fe-Fe bonds has a lower Einstein temperature and higher structural disorder than in LaFeAsO0.89F0.11. The moderate Fe site and high K site structural disorder is consistent with the high normal state resistivity seen in this class of materials. For higher shells, an enhancement of the second nearest neighbor Fe-Fe interaction is found just below Tc and suggests that correlations between Fe magnetic ion pairs beyond the first neighbor are important in models of magnetic order and superconductivity in these materials.

Effects of charge inhomogeneities on elementary excitations in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Purely local experimental probes of many copper oxide superconductors show that their electronic states are inhomogeneous in real space. For example, scanning tunneling spectroscopic (STS) imaging shows strong variations in real space, and according to nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies the charge distribution in the bulk varies on the nanoscale. However, the analysis of the experimental results utilizing spatially-averaged probes often ignores this fact. We have performed a detailed investigation of the doping-dependence of the energy and line width and position of the zone-boundary Cu-O bond-stretching vibration in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 by inelastic neutron scattering. Both our new results as well as previously reported angle-dependent momentum widths of the electronic spectral function detected by angle-resolved photoemission can be reproduced by including the same distribution of local environments extracted from the NQR analysis.

Unusual Nernst effect suggestive of time-reversal violation in the striped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$

The striped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=\frac18)$ undergoes several transitions below the charge-ordering temperature $T_{co}$ = 54 K. From Nernst experiments, we find that, below $T_{co}$, there exists a large, anomalous Nernst signal $e_{N,even}(H,T)$ that is symmetric in field $H$, and remains finite as $H\to 0$. The time-reversal violating signal suggests that, below $T_{co}$, vortices of one sign are spontaneously created to relieve interlayer phase frustration.

Electronic Structure of the Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Using Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy: Evidence for a Nearly Full Surface Spin Polarization

We performed high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of the electronic structure and the spin texture on the surface of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a model topological insulator. By tuning the photon energy, we found that the topological surface state is well separated from the bulk states in the vicinity of $k_z=Z$ plane of the bulk Brillouin zone. The spin-resolved measurements in that region indicate a very high degree of spin polarization of the surface state, $\sim 0.75$, much higher than previously reported. Our results demonstrate that the topological surface state on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is highly spin polarized and that the dominant factors limiting the polarization are mainly extrinsic.

Momentum-space electronic structures and charge orders of high-temperature superconductors Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta

We study the electronic structure of Ca2-xNaxCuO2Cl2 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d samples in a wide range of doping, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, with emphasis on on the Fermi surface (FS) in the near anti-nodal region. The "nesting wave vector", i.e., the wave vector that connects two nearly flat pieces of the Fermi surface in the anti-nodal region, reveals a universal monotonic decrease in magnitude as a function of doping. Comparing our results to the charge order recently observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we conclude that the FS nesting and the charge order pattern seen in STS do not have a direct relationship. Therefore, the charge order likely arises due to strong correlation physics rather than FS nesting physics.

Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid Description of Normal State ARPES in Cuprates

The normal state single particle spectral function of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, measured by the angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), has been considered both anomalous and crucial to understand. Here we show that an unprecedentedly detailed description of the data is provided by a spectral function arising from the Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid state of the t-J model proposed recently by Shastry. The description encompasses both laser and conventional synchrotron ARPES data on optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, and also conventional synchrotron ARPES data on the La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_4$ materials. {\em It fits all data sets with the same physical parameter values}, satisfies the particle sum rule and successfully addresses two widely discussed "kink" anomalies in the dispersion.

Revealing the dual nature of magnetism in iron pnictides and iron chalcogenides using x-ray emission spectroscopy

We report Fe K beta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in various iron based superconductors in their paramagnetic phases. Local magnetic moments are found in all samples studied: PrFeAsO, Ba(Fe,Co)2As2, LiFeAs, Fe1+x(Te,Se), and A2Fe4Se5 (A=K, Rb, and Cs). The moment size varies significantly across different families. Specifically, all iron pnictides samples have local moments of about 1 $μ_B$/Fe, while FeTe and K2Fe4Se5 families have much larger local moments of ~2$μ_B$/Fe, ~3.3$μ_B$/Fe, respectively. In addition, we find that neither carrier doping nor temperature change affects the local moment size.

Breakdown of the universal Josephson relation in spin ordered cuprate superconductors

We present \emph{c} axis infrared optical data on a number of Ba, Sr and Nd-doped cuprates of the La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ (La214) series in which we observe significant deviations from the universal Josephson relation linking the normal state transport (DC conductivity $σ_{DC}$ measured at $T_{c}$) with the superfluid density ($ρ_{s}$): $ρ_{s}\proptoσ_{DC}(T_{c})$. We find the violation of Josephson scaling is associated with striking enhancement of the anisotropy in the superfluid density. The data allows us to link the breakdown of Josephson interlayer physics with the development of magnetic order in the CuO$_2$ planes.

Electronic Raman Scattering in copper oxide Superconductors: Understanding the Phase Diagram

Electronic Raman scattering measurements have been performed on hole doped copper oxide superconductors as a function of temperature and doping level. In the superconducting state coherent Bogoliubov quasiparticles develop preferentially over the nodal region in the underdoped regime. We can then define the fraction of coherent Fermi surface, $f_c$ around the nodes for which quasiparticles are well defined and superconductivity sets in. We find that $f_c$ is doping dependent and leads to the emergence of two energy scales. We then establish in a one single gap shem, that the critical temperature $T_{c} \propto f_{c}Δ_{max}$ where $Δ_{max}$ is the maximum amplitude of the d-wave superconducting gap. In the normal state, the loss of antinodal quasiparticles spectral weight detected in the superconducting state persists and the spectral weight is only restored above the pseudogap temperature $T*$. Such a dichotomy in the quasiparticles dynamics is then responsible for the emergence of the two energy scales in the superconducting state and the appearance of the pseudogap in the normal state. We propose a 3D phase diagram where both the temperature and the energy phase diagrams have been plotted together. We anticipate that the development of coherent excitations on a restricted part of the Fermi surface only is a general feature in high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors as the Mott insulating is approaching.

Extraction of Electron Self-Energy and Gap Function in the Superconducting State of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 Superconductor via Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been performed on a high temperature superconductor Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. The band back-bending characteristic of the Bogoliubov-like quasiparticle dispersion is clearly revealed at low temperature in the superconducting state. This makes it possible for the first time to experimentally extract the complex electron self-energy and the complex gap function in the superconducting state. The resultant electron self-energy and gap function exhibit features at ~54 meV and ~40 meV, in addition to the superconducting gap-induced structure at lower binding energy and a broad featureless structure at higher binding energy. These information will provide key insight and constraints on the origin of electron pairing in high temperature superconductors.

On the Reconstructed Fermi Surface in the Underdoped Cuprates

The Fermi surface topologies of underdoped samples the high-Tc superconductor Bi2212 have been measured with angle resolved photoemission. By examining thermally excited states above the Fermi level, we show that the Fermi surfaces in the pseudogap phase of underdoped samples are actually composed of fully enclosed hole pockets. The spectral weight of these pockets is vanishingly small at the anti-ferromagnetic zone boundary, which creates the illusion of Fermi "arcs" in standard photoemission measurements. The area of the pockets as measured in this study is consistent with the doping level, and hence carrier density, of the samples measured. Furthermore, the shape and area of the pockets is well reproduced by a phenomenological model of the pseudogap phase as a spin liquid.

Charge order and low frequency spin dynamics in lanthanum cuprates revealed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

We report detailed 17O, 139La, and 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) measurements in a stripe ordered La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 single crystal and in oriented powder samples of La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4. We observe a partial wipeout of the 17O NMR intensity and a simultaneous drop of the 17O electric field gradient (EFG) at low temperatures where the spin stripe order sets in. In contrast, the 63Cu intensity is completely wiped out at the same temperature. The drop of the 17O quadrupole frequency is compatible with a charge stripe order. The 17O spin lattice relaxation rate shows a peak similar to that of the 139La, which is of magnetic origin. This peak is doping dependent and is maximal at x ~ 1/8.

Terahertz Hall Measurements On Optimally Doped Single Crystal Bi-2212

The infrared Hall angle in optimally doped single crystal $\rm Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+x}$ was measured from 3.05 to 21.75 meV as a continuous function of temperature from 25 to 300\,K. In the normal state, the temperature dependence of the real part of the cotangent of the infrared Hall angle obeys the same power law as dc measurements. The measured Hall frequency $\rm ω_H$ is significantly larger than the expected value based upon ARPES data analyzed in terms of the relaxation time approximation. This discrepancy as well as the temperature dependence of $\rm Re(\cot{θ_H})$ and $ω_H$ is well described by a Fermi liquid theory in which current vertex corrections produced by electron-magnon scattering are included.

Coupling of spin and orbital excitations in the iron-based superconductor FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5)

We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to explaining this behavior. If correct, it follows that these nematic fluctuations are involved in the resonance and could be relevant to the pairing mechanism.

Stripe order in superconducting La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) for 0.095 <= x <= 0.155

The correlations between stripe order, superconductivity, and crystal structure in La(2-x)Ba(x)CuO(4) single crystals have been studied by means of x-ray and neutron diffraction as well as static magnetization measurements. The derived phase diagram shows that charge stripe order (CO) coexists with bulk superconductivity in a broad range of doping around x=1/8, although the CO order parameter falls off quickly for x<>1/8. Except for x=0.155, the onset of CO always coincides with the transition between the orthorhombic and the tetragonal low temperature structures. The CO transition evolves from a sharp drop at low x to a more gradual transition at higher x, eventually falling below the structural phase boundary for optimum doping. With respect to the interlayer CO correlations, we find no qualitative change of the stripe stacking order as a function of doping, and in-plane and out-of-plane correlations disappear simultaneously at the transition. Similarly to the CO, the spin stripe order (SO) is also most pronounced at x=1/8. Truly static SO sets in below the CO and coincides with the first appearance of in-plane superconducting correlations at temperatures significantly above the bulk transition to superconductivity (SC). Indications that bulk SC causes a reduction of the spin or charge stripe order could not be identified. We argue that CO is the dominant order that is compatible with SC pairing but competes with SC phase coherence. Comparing our results with data from the literature, we find good agreement if all results are plotted as a function of x' instead of the nominal x, where x' represents an estimate of the actual Ba content, extracted from the doping dependence of the structural transition between the orthorhombic phase and the tetragonal high-temperature phase.
