Weak gravity versus de Sitter

We show that one can uncover a Dine-Seiberg problem for de Sitter critical points in supergravity theories by utilizing the magnetic weak gravity conjecture. We present a large variety of N=2 gauged supergravity models that include vector multiplets and in all cases we find that the weak gravity conjecture threatens de Sitter. A common feature in all such examples is a degenerate mass matrix for the gravitini, which we therefore deem a swampland criterion for de Sitter critical points.

Old and new vacua of 5D maximal supergravity

We look for critical points with U(2) residual symmetry in 5-dimensional maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity, by varying the embedding tensor, rather than directly minimizing the scalar potential. We recover all previously known vacua and we find four new vacua, with different gauge groups and cosmological constants. We provide the first example of a maximal supergravity model in $D \geq 4$ having critical points with both positive and vanishing cosmological constant. For each vacuum we also compute the full mass spectrum. All results are analytic.

From Linear to Non-linear SUSY and Back Again

We show that couplings of the goldstino field, appearing when global supersymmetry is broken, can always be described in superspace by means of a nilpotent chiral superfield $X$, satisfying $X^2=0$. This applies to both F-term and D-term supersymmetry breaking, even when the supersymmetry breaking model admits a linear description.

Minimal Constrained Supergravity

We describe minimal supergravity models where supersymmetry is non-linearly realized via constrained superfields. We show that the resulting actions differ from the so called "de Sitter" supergravities because we consider constraints eliminating directly the auxiliary fields of the gravity multiplet.

Interactions of N Goldstini in Superspace

We study field theories with N extended non-linearly realized supersymmetries, describing the couplings of models that contain N goldstini. We review all the known formulations of the N=1 goldstino theories and we generalize them to an arbitrary number N of non-linearly realized supersymmetries. We explicitly prove the equivalence of all these extended supersymmetry breaking models containing N goldstini and reformulate the theory with N supersymmetries in terms of standard N=1 constrained superfields.

On the origin of constrained superfields

In this work we analyze constrained superfields in supersymmetry and supergravity. We propose a constraint that, in combination with the constrained goldstino multiplet, consistently removes any selected component from a generic superfield. We also describe its origin, providing the operators whose equations of motion lead to the decoupling of such components. We illustrate our proposal by means of various examples and show how known constraints can be reproduced by our method.

de Sitter vacua in N = 8 supergravity and slow-roll conditions

In this letter we discuss de Sitter vacua in maximal gauged supergravity in 4 dimensions. We show that, using the newly deformed theories introduced in arxiv:1209.0760, we can obtain de Sitter vacua with arbitrarily flat tachyonic directions in the SO(4,4)c models.

Evidence for a family of SO(8) gauged supergravity theories

In this note we discuss the classification of duality orbits of N = 8 gauged supergravity models. Using tensor classifiers, we show that there is a one-parameter family of inequivalent SO(8) gauged supergravity theories. We briefly discuss the couplings of such models and show that, although the maximally symmetric vacuum has the same quadratic spectrum, the supersymmetry transformations, the couplings and the scalar potential are parameter dependent. We also comment on the possible M-theory uplift and on the meaning of the parameter for the dual gauge theories.

On the vacua of N = 8 gauged supergravity in 4 dimensions

We discuss a simple procedure for finding vacua of gauged supergravity models, based on the variation of the embedding tensor rather than on a direct minimization of the scalar potential. We apply this procedure to N=8 gauged supergravity in 4 dimensions. We easily recover many of the previously known vacua, also completing their scalar mass spectrum, and we apply our procedure to find a dozen of new analytical vacuum solutions. The analysis shows an interesting structure on the moduli spaces of these vacua and provides new criteria to determine the expected value of the cosmological constant by a simple inspection of the group properties of the embedding tensor.

On Subextensive Corrections to Fluid Dynamics from Gravity

We use the fluid-gravity correspondence to compute subextensive corrections, proportional to the shear tensor, to the energy-momentum tensor of fluids on three-spheres. The dual configurations we consider are charged black hole solutions of N = 2 gauged supergravity theories in five dimensions.

Gaugino Condensation and Generation of Supersymmetric 3-Form Flux

We extend the linearised solution of Polchinski and Strassler describing the supergravity dual of the N=1* gauge theory. By analysing the equations of motion of type IIB supergravity at cubic order in the mass perturbation parameter, we demonstrate the emergence of a 3-form flux of type (3,0) with respect to the natural complex structure. The generation of this flux can be associated to the dynamical formation of a gaugino condensate in the confining phase of the N=1* gauge theory. We also check that the supersymmetry conditions are satisfied, and we discuss how this (3,0)-form flux is tied to the existence of a supersymmetric background with SU(2)-structure.

Heterotic String Theory on non-Kaehler Manifolds with H-Flux and Gaugino Condensate

We discuss compactifications of heterotic string theory to four dimensions in the presence of H-fluxes, which deform the geometry of the internal manifold, and a gaugino condensate which breaks supersymmetry. We focus on the compensation of the two effects in order to obtain vacua with zero cosmological constant and we comment on the effective superpotential describing these vacua.

BPS Action and Superpotential for Heterotic String Compactifications with Fluxes

We consider N =1 compactifications to four dimensions of heterotic string theory in the presence of fluxes. We show that up to order O(α'^2) the associated action can be written as a sum of squares of BPS-like quantities. In this way we prove that the equations of motion are solved by backgrounds which fulfill the supersymmetry conditions and the Bianchi identities. We also argue for the expression of the related superpotential and discuss the radial modulus stabilization for a class of examples.

Non-Kaehler String Backgrounds and their Five Torsion Classes

We discuss the mathematical properties of six--dimensional non--Kähler manifolds which occur in the context of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric heterotic and type IIA string compactifications with non--vanishing background H--field. The intrinsic torsion of the associated SU(3) structures falls into five different classes. For heterotic compactifications we present an explicit dictionary between the supersymmetry conditions and these five torsion classes. We show that the non--Ricci flat Iwasawa manifold solves the supersymmetry conditions with non--zero H--field, so that it is a consistent heterotic supersymmetric groundstate.

Intersecting 6-branes from new 7-manifolds with G_2 holonomy

We discuss a new family of metrics of 7-manifolds with G_2 holonomy, which are R^3 bundles over a quaternionic space. The metrics depend on five parameters and have two Abelian isometries. Certain singularities of the G_2 manifolds are related to fixed points of these isometries; there are two combinations of Killing vectors that possess co-dimension four fixed points which yield upon compactification only intersecting D6-branes if one also identifies two parameters. Two of the remaining parameters are quantized and we argue that they are related to the number of D6-branes, which appear in three stacks. We perform explicitly the reduction to the type IIA model.

Brane-worlds in 5d supergravity

We summarise the present status of supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum brane-world scenarios and report on their possible realisation within five-dimensional matter coupled N=2 gauged supergravity.

General matter coupled N=2, D=5 gauged supergravity

We give the full lagrangean and supersymmetry transformation rules for D=5, N=2 supergravity interacting with an arbitrary number of vector, tensor and hyper-multiplets, with gauging of the R-symmetry group SU(2)_R as well as a subgroup K of the isometries of the scalar manifold. Among the many possible applications, this theory provides the setting where a supersymmetric brane-world scenario could occur. We comment on the presence of AdS vacua and BPS solutions that would be relevant towards a supersymmetric smooth realization of the Randall-Sundrum "alternative to compactification". We also add some remarks on the connection between this most general 5D fully coupled supergravity model and type IIB theory on the T^{11} manifold.
