Search for Astronomical Neutrinos from Blazar TXS0506+056 in Super-Kamiokande

We report a search for astronomical neutrinos in the energy region from several GeV to TeV in the direction of the blazar TXS0506+056 using the Super-Kamiokande detector following the detection of a 100 TeV neutrino from the same location by the IceCube collaboration. Using Super-Kamiokande neutrino data across several data samples observed from April 1996 to February 2018 we have searched for both a total excess above known backgrounds across the entire period as well as localized excesses on smaller time scales in that interval. No significant excess nor significant variation in the observed event rate are found in the blazar direction. Upper limits are placed on the electron and muon neutrino fluxes at 90\% confidence level as $6.03 \times 10^{-7}$ and $4.52 \times 10^{-7}$ to $9.26 \times 10^{-10}$ [${\rm erg}/{\rm cm}^2/{\rm s}$], respectively.

Measurement of the ion fraction and mobility of $^{218}$Po produced in $^{222}$Rn decays in liquid argon

We report measurements of the charged daughter fraction of $^{218}$Po as a result of the $^{222}$Rn alpha decay, and the mobility of $^{218}$Po$^+$ ions, using radon-polonium coincidences from the $^{238}$U chain identified in 532 live-days of DarkSide-50 WIMP-search data. The fraction of $^{218}$Po that is charged is found to be 0.37$\pm$0.03 and the mobility of $^{218}$Po$^+$ is (8.6$\pm$0.1)$\times$10$^{-4}$$\frac{\text{cm}^2}{\text{Vs}}$.

Sensitivity of Super-Kamiokande with Gadolinium to Low Energy Anti-neutrinos from Pre-supernova Emission

Supernova detection is a major objective of the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment. In the next stage of SK (SK-Gd), gadolinium (Gd) sulfate will be added to the detector, which will improve the ability of the detector to identify neutrons. A core-collapse supernova will be preceded by an increasing flux of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, from thermal and weak nuclear processes in the star, over a timescale of hours; some of which may be detected at SK-Gd. This could provide an early warning of an imminent core-collapse supernova, hours earlier than the detection of the neutrinos from core collapse. Electron anti-neutrino detection will rely on inverse beta decay events below the usual analysis energy threshold of SK, so Gd loading is vital to reduce backgrounds while maximising detection efficiency. Assuming normal neutrino mass ordering, more than 200 events could be detected in the final 12 hours before core collapse for a 15-25 solar mass star at around 200 pc, which is representative of the nearest red supergiant to Earth, $\mathrmα$Ori (Betelgeuse). At a statistical false alarm rate of 1 per century, detection could be up to 10 hours before core collapse, and a pre-supernova star could be detected by SK-Gd up to 600 pc away. A pre-supernova alert could be provided to the astrophysics community following gadolinium loading.

Measurement of the muon neutrino charged-current single $π^+$ production on hydrocarbon using the T2K off-axis near detector ND280

We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $σ= (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

First Measurement of the Charged Current $\overlineν_μ$ Double Differential Cross Section on a Water Target without Pions in the final state

This paper reports the first differential measurement of the charged-current $\overlineν_μ$ interaction cross section on water with no pions in the final state. The unfolded flux-averaged measurement using the T2K off-axis near detector is given in double differential bins of $μ^+$ momentum and angle. The integrated cross section in a restricted phase space is $σ=\left(1.11\pm0.18\right)\times10^{-38}$ cm$^{2}$ per water molecule. Comparisons with several nuclear models are also presented.

A wind-based unification model for NGC 5548: spectral holidays, non-disk emission, and implications for changing-look quasars

The 180-day Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign on NGC 5548 discovered an anomalous period, the broad-line region (BLR) holiday, in which the emission lines decorrelated from the continuum variations. This is important since the correlation between the continuum-flux variations and the emission-line response is the basic assumption for black hole (BH) mass determinations through reverberation mapping. During the BLR holiday, the high-ionization intrinsic absorption lines also decorrelated from the continuum as a result of variable covering factor of the line of sight (LOS) obscurer. The emission lines are not confined to the LOS, so this does not explain the BLR holiday. If the LOS obscurer is a disk wind, its streamlines must extend down to the plane of the disk and the base of the wind would lie between the BH and the BLR, forming an equatorial obscurer. This obscurer can be transparent to ionizing radiation, or can be translucent, blocking only parts of the SED, depending on its density. An emission-line holiday is produced if the wind density increases only slightly above its transparent state. Both obscurers are parts of the same wind, so they can have associated behavior in a way that explains both holidays. A very dense wind would block nearly all ionizing radiation, producing a Seyfert 2 and possibly providing a contributor to the changing-look AGN phenomenon. Disk winds are very common and we propose that the equatorial obscurers are too, but mostly in a transparent state.

J-PARC Neutrino Beamline Upgrade Technical Design Report

In this document, technical details of the upgrade plan of the J-PARC neutrino beamline for the extension of the T2K experiment are described. T2K has proposed to accumulate data corresponding to $2\times{}10^{22}$ protons-on-target in the next decade, aiming at an initial observation of CP violation with $3σ$ or higher significance in the case of maximal CP violation. Methods to increase the neutrino beam intensity, which are necessary to achieve the proposed data increase, are described.

Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. VIII. Time Variability of Emission and Absorption in NGC 5548 Based on Modeling the Ultraviolet Spectrum

We model the ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~5548 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope during the 6-month reverberation-mapping campaign in 2014. Our model of the emission from NGC 5548 corrects for overlying absorption and deblends the individual emission lines. Using the modeled spectra, we measure the response to continuum variations for the deblended and absorption-corrected individual broad emission lines, the velocity-dependent profiles of Ly$α$ and C IV, and the narrow and broad intrinsic absorption features. We find that the time lags for the corrected emission lines are comparable to those for the original data. The velocity-binned lag profiles of Ly$α$ and C IV have a double-peaked structure indicative of a truncated Keplerian disk. The narrow absorption lines show delayed response to continuum variations corresponding to recombination in gas with a density of $\sim 10^5~\rm cm^{-3}$. The high-ionization narrow absorption lines decorrelate from continuum variations during the same period as the broad emission lines. Analyzing the response of these absorption lines during this period shows that the ionizing flux is diminished in strength relative to the far-ultraviolet continuum. The broad absorption lines associated with the X-ray obscurer decrease in strength during this same time interval. The appearance of X-ray obscuration in $\sim\,2012$ corresponds with an increase in the luminosity of NGC 5548 following an extended low state. We suggest that the obscurer is a disk wind triggered by the brightening of NGC 5548 following the decrease in size of the broad-line region during the preceding low-luminosity state.

Search for light sterile neutrinos with the T2K far detector Super-Kamiokande at a baseline of 295 km

We perform a search for light sterile neutrinos using the data from the T2K far detector at a baseline of 295 km, with an exposure of 14.7 (7.6)$\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. A selection of neutral current interaction samples are also used to enhance the sensitivity to sterile mixing. No evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the 3+1 model was found from a simultaneous fit to the charged-current muon, electron and neutral current neutrino samples. We set the most stringent limit on the sterile oscillation amplitude $\sin^2θ_{24}$ for the sterile neutrino mass splitting $Δm^2_{41}<3\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2/c^4$.

Anomalous behaviour of the UV-optical continuum bands in NGC 5548

During the 2014 HST/Swift and ground-based multi-wavelength monitoring campaign of NGC 5548 (AGN STORM), the UV-optical broad emission lines exhibited anomalous, decorrelated behaviour relative to the far-UV continuum flux variability. Here, we use key diagnostic emission lines (Ly-alpha and He II) for this campaign to infer a proxy for the all important, variable driving EUV continuum incident upon BLR clouds. The inferred driving continuum provides a crucial step towards the recovery of the broad emission line response functions in this AGN. In particular, the ionising continuum seen by the BLR was weaker and softer during the anomalous period than during the first third of the campaign, and apparently less variable than exhibited by the far-UV continuum. We also report the first evidence for anomalous behaviour in the longer wavelength (relative to 1157A) continuum bands. This is corroborative evidence that a significant contribution to the variable UV-optical continuum emission arises from a diffuse continuum emanating from the same gas that emits the broad emission lines.

Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Project. X. Understanding the Absorption-Line Holiday in NGC 5548

The flux variations in the emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are driven by variations in the ionizing continuum flux --which are usually reflected in the observable UV-optical continuum. The "Reverberation mapping" technique measures the delay between line and continuum variations to determine the size of the line emitting region, this is the basis for measurements of the central black hole mass in AGNs. The Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Project (AGN STORM) on NGC 5548 in 2014 is the most intensive multi-wavelength AGN monitoring campaign ever. For most of the campaign, the emission-line variations followed changes in the continuum with a time lag, as expected. However, the lines varied independently of the observed UV-optical continuum during a 60 -- 70 day "holiday." To understand this remarkable phenomenon, we study the intrinsic absorption lines present in NGC 5548. We identify a novel cycle that reproduces the absorption line variability and thus identify the physics that allows the holiday to occur. In our model, variations in this obscurer's line-of-sight covering factor modify the soft X-ray continuum. This leads to changes in the ionization of helium gas in the broad-line region. Ionizing radiation produced by recombining helium then affects the ionization of other species as observed during the AGN STORM holiday. It is likely that any other model which selectively changes the soft X-ray part of the continuum during the holiday can also explain the anomalous emission line behavior observed.

Measurement of the $ν_μ$ charged-current cross sections on water, hydrocarbon, iron, and their ratios with the T2K on-axis detectors

We report a measurement of the flux-integrated $ν_μ$ charged-current cross sections on water, hydrocarbon, and iron in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of 1.5 GeV. The measured cross sections on water, hydrocarbon, and iron are $σ^{\rm{H_{2}O}}_{\rm{CC}}$ = (0.840$\pm 0.010$(stat.)$^{+0.10}_{-0.08}$(syst.))$\times$10$^{-38}$cm$^2$/nucleon, $σ^{\rm{CH}}_{\rm{CC}}$ = (0.817$\pm 0.007$(stat.)$^{+0.11}_{-0.08}$(syst.))$\times$10$^{-38}$cm$^2$/nucleon, and $σ^{\rm{Fe}}_{\rm{CC}}$ = (0.859$\pm 0.003$(stat.) $^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$(syst.))$\times$10$^{-38}$cm$^2$/nucleon respectively, for a restricted phase space of induced muons: $θ_μ<45^{\circ}$ and $p_μ>$0.4 GeV/$c$ in the laboratory frame. The measured cross section ratios are ${σ^{\rm{H_{2}O}}_{\rm{CC}}}/{σ^{\rm{CH}}_{\rm{CC}}}$ = 1.028$\pm 0.016$(stat.)$\pm 0.053$(syst.), ${σ^{\rm{Fe}}_{\rm{CC}}}/{σ^{\rm{H_{2}O}}_{\rm{CC}}}$ = 1.023$\pm 0.012$(stat.)$\pm 0.058$(syst.), and ${σ^{\rm{Fe}}_{\rm{CC}}}/{σ^{\rm{CH}}_{\rm{CC}}}$ = 1.049$\pm 0.010$(stat.)$\pm 0.043$(syst.). These results, with an unprecedented precision for the measurements of neutrino cross sections on water in the studied energy region, show good agreement with the current neutrino interaction models used in the T2K oscillation analyses.

The ENUBET narrow band neutrino beam

The narrow band beam of ENUBET is the first implementation of the "monitored neutrino beam" technique proposed in 2015. ENUBET has been designed to monitor lepton production in the decay tunnel of neutrino beams and to provide a 1% measurement of the neutrino flux at source. In particular, the three body semi-leptonic decay of kaons monitored by large angle positron production offers a fully controlled $ν_{e}$ source at the GeV scale for a new generation of short baseline experiments. In this contribution the performances of the positron tagger prototypes tested at CERN beamlines in 2016-2018 are presented.

An Ultra Deep Field survey with WFIRST

Studying the formation and evolution of galaxies at the earliest cosmic times, and their role in reionization, requires the deepest imaging possible. Ultra-deep surveys like the HUDF and HFF have pushed to mag \mAB$\,\sim\,$30, revealing galaxies at the faint end of the LF to $z$$\,\sim\,$9$\,-\,$11 and constraining their role in reionization. However, a key limitation of these fields is their size, only a few arcminutes (less than a Mpc at these redshifts), too small to probe large-scale environments or clustering properties of these galaxies, crucial for advancing our understanding of reionization. Achieving HUDF-quality depth over areas $\sim$100 times larger becomes possible with a mission like the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), a 2.4-m telescope with similar optical properties to HST, with a field of view of $\sim$1000 arcmin$^2$, $\sim$100$\times$ the area of the HST/ACS HUDF. This whitepaper motivates an Ultra-Deep Field survey with WFIRST, covering $\sim$100$\,-\,$300$\times$ the area of the HUDF, or up to $\sim$1 deg$^2$, to \mAB$\,\sim\,$30, potentially revealing thousands of galaxies and AGN at the faint end of the LF, at or beyond $z$\,$\sim$\,9$\,-\,$10 in the epoch of reionization, and tracing their LSS environments, dramatically increasing the discovery potential at these redshifts. (Note: This paper is a somewhat expanded version of one that was submitted as input to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey, with this version including an Appendix (which exceeded the Astro2020 page limits), describing how the science drivers for a WFIRST Ultra Deep Field might map into a notional observing program, including the filters used and exposure times needed to achieve these depths.)

Search for neutral-current induced single photon production at the ND280 near detector in T2K

Neutrino neutral-current induced single photon production is a sub-leading order process for accelerator-based neutrino beam experiments including T2K. It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the fine-grained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By reconstructing single photon kinematics from electron-positron pairs, we achieved 95\% pure gamma ray sample from 5.738$\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-targets neutrino mode data. We do not find positive evidence of neutral current induced single photon production in this sample. We set the model-dependent upper limit on the cross-section for this process, at 0.114$\times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ (90\% C.L.) per nucleon, using the J-PARC off-axis neutrino beam with an average energy of $\left \sim 0.6$ GeV. This is the first limit on this process below 1 GeV which is important for current and future oscillation experiments looking for electron neutrino appearance oscillation signals.

Irradiation and performance of RGB-HD Silicon Photomultipliers for calorimetric applications

Silicon Photomultipliers with cell-pitch ranging from 12 $μ$m to 20 $μ$m were tested against neutron irradiation at moderate fluences to study their performance for calorimetric applications. The photosensors were developed by FBK employing the RGB-HD technology. We performed irradiation tests up to $2 \times 10^{11}$ n/cm$^2$ (1 MeV eq.) at the INFN-LNL Irradiation Test facility. The SiPMs were characterized on-site (dark current and photoelectron response) during and after irradiations at different fluences. The irradiated SiPMs were installed in the ENUBET compact calorimetric modules and characterized with muons and electrons at the CERN East Area facility. The tests demonstrate that both the electromagnetic response and the sensitivity to minimum ionizing particles are retained after irradiation. Gain compensation can be achieved increasing the bias voltage well within the operation range of the SiPMs. The sensitivity to single photoelectrons is lost at $\sim 10^{10}$ n/cm$^2$ due to the increase of the dark current.

Measurement of neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasi-elastic cross section using atmospheric neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande

Neutral current (NC) interactions of atmospheric neutrinos on oxygen form one of the major backgrounds in the search for supernova relic neutrinos with water-based Cherenkov detectors. The NC channel is dominated by neutrino quasi-elastic (NCQE) scattering off nucleons inside $^{16}$O nuclei. In this paper we report the first measurement of NCQE cross section using atmospheric neutrinos at Super-Kamiokande (SK). The measurement used 2,778 live days of SK-IV data with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water. Within the visible energy window of 7.5-29.5 MeV, we observed $117$ events compared to the expected $71.9$ NCQE signal and $53.1$ background events. Weighted by the atmospheric neutrino spectrum from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, the flux averaged NCQE cross section is measured to be $(1.01\pm0.17(\text{stat.})^{+0.78}_{-0.30}(\text{sys.}))\times10^{-38}$ cm$^2$.

A high precision neutrino beam for a new generation of short baseline experiments

The current generation of short baseline neutrino experiments is approaching intrinsic source limitations in the knowledge of flux, initial neutrino energy and flavor. A dedicated facility based on conventional accelerator techniques and existing infrastructures designed to overcome these impediments would have a remarkable impact on the entire field of neutrino oscillation physics. It would improve by about one order of magnitude the precision on $ν_μ$ and $ν_e$ cross sections, enable the study of electroweak nuclear physics at the GeV scale with unprecedented resolution and advance searches for physics beyond the three-neutrino paradigm. In turn, these results would enhance the physics reach of the next generation long baseline experiments (DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande) on CP violation and their sensitivity to new physics. In this document, we present the physics case and technology challenge of high precision neutrino beams based on the results achieved by the ENUBET Collaboration in 2016-2018. We also set the R&D milestones to enable the construction and running of this new generation of experiments well before the start of the DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande data taking. We discuss the implementation of this new facility at three different level of complexity: $ν_μ$ narrow band beams, $ν_e$ monitored beams and tagged neutrino beams. We also consider a site specific implementation based on the CERN-SPS proton driver providing a fully controlled neutrino source to the ProtoDUNE detectors at CERN.
