Suppression of Edge Localized Modes in ITER Baseline Scenario in EAST using Edge Localized Magnetic Perturbations

We report the suppression of Type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) in the EAST tokamak under ITER baseline conditions using $n = 4$ Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs), while maintaining energy confinement. Achieving RMP-ELM suppression requires a normalized plasma beta ($\beta_N$) exceeding 1.8 in a target plasma with $q_{95}\approx 3.1$ and tungsten divertors. Quasi-linear modeling shows high plasma beta enhances RMP-driven neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque, reducing field penetration thresholds. These findings demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of high $n$ RMPs for ELM suppression in ITER.

Technical Design Report of the Spin Physics Detector at NICA

The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

The magnetic dynamics of NiPS$_3$

Neutron spectroscopy measurements have been performed on single crystals of the antiferromagnetic van der Waals compound NiPS$_3$. Linear spin wave theory using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with single-ion anisotropies has been applied to determine the magnetic exchange parameters and the nature of the anisotropy. The analysis reveals that NiPS$_3$ is less two-dimensional than its sister compounds, with a relatively large ferromagnetic exchange of $J^{\prime} = -0.3$ meV between the layered \emph{ab} planes. In-plane magnetic exchange interactions up to the third nearest-neighbour were required to fit the data. The nearest-neighbour exchange was ferromagnetic with $J_1 = -2.6$ meV, the second neighbour was antiferromagnetic and small with $J_2 = 0.2$ meV, and the dominant antiferromagnetic third neighbour exchange was $J_3 = 13.5$ meV. The anisotropy was shown to be largely XY-like with a small uniaxial component, leading to the appearance of two low-energy spin wave modes in the spin wave spectrum at the Brillouin zone centre. The analysis could reproduce the spin wave energies, however there are discrepancies with the calculated neutron intensities hinting at more exotic phenomena.

Crossover of the high-energy spin fluctuations from collective triplons to localized magnetic excitations in doped Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 cuprate ladders

We studied the magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional (q-1D) ladder subsystem of Sr_(14-x) Ca_x Cu_24 O_41(SCCO) using Cu L_3-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). By comparing momentum-resolved RIXS spectra with (x=12.2) and without (x=0) high Ca content, we track the evolution of the magnetic excitations from collective two-triplon (2T) excitations (x=0) to weakly-dispersive gapped modes at an energy of 280 meV (x=12.2). Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of the RIXS response in the doped ladders suggest that the flat magnetic dispersion and damped excitation profile observed at x=12.2 originates from enhanced hole localization. This interpretation is supported by polarization-dependent RIXS measurements, where we disentangle the spin-conserving {\Delta}S=0 scattering from the predominant {\Delta}S=1 spin-flip signal in the RIXS spectra. The results show that the low-energy weight in the {\Delta}S=0 channel is depleted when Sr is replaced by Ca, consistent with a reduced carrier mobility. Our results demonstrate that off-ladder impurities can affect both the low-energy magnetic excitations and superconducting correlations in the CuO_4 plaquettes. Finally, our study characterizes the magnetic and charge fluctuations in the phase from which superconductivity emerges in SCCO at elevated pressures.

Three-wave resonant interactions in the diatomic chain with cubic anharmonic potential: theory and simulations

We consider a diatomic chain characterized by a cubic anharmonic potential. After diagonalizing the harmonic case, we study in the new canonical variables, the nonlinear interactions between the acoustical and optical branches of the dispersion relation. Using the {\it wave turbulence} approach, we formally derive two coupled wave kinetic equations, each describing the evolution of the wave action spectral density associated to each branch. An $H$-theorem shows that there exist an irreversible transfer of energy that leads to an equilibrium solution characterized by the equipartition of energy in the new variables. While in the monoatomic cubic chain, in the large box limit, the main nonlinear transfer mechanism is based on four-wave resonant interactions, the diatomic one is ruled by a three wave resonant process (two acoustical and one optical wave): thermalization happens on shorter time scale for the diatomic chain with respect to the standard chain. Resonances are possible only if the ratio between the heavy and light masses is less than 3. Numerical simulations of the deterministic equations support our theoretical findings.

Effects of Ca substitution on quasi-acoustic sliding modes in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

The low energy lattice dynamics of the quasi-periodic spin-ladder cuprate Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ are investigated using terahertz frequency synchrotron radiation. A high density of low-lying optical excitations are present in the 1-3 THz energy range, while at least two highly absorbing excitations stemming from rigid acoustic oscillations of the incommensurate chain and ladder sublattices, are observed at sub-terahertz frequencies. The effects of Ca substitution on the sub-terahertz quasi-acoustic sliding mode gaps is investigated using coherent synchrotron radiation. Analysis of the results suggest increasing substitution of Sr for Ca is accompanied by a transfer of spectral weight between sliding modes associated with different chain-ladder dynamics. The observation is consistent with a transfer of hole charges from the chains to the ladders and modification of the sublattice dimensions following Ca substitution. The results are discussed in context to the significance of low-lying vibrational dynamics and electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting state of certain quasi-periodic systems.

Pseudospin-lattice coupling in the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

Spin-orbit entangled magnetic dipoles, often referred to as pseudospins, provide a new avenue to explore novel magnetism inconceivable in the weak spin-orbit coupling limit, but the nature of their low-energy interactions remains to be understood. We present a comprehensive study of the static magnetism and low-energy pseudospin dynamics in the archetypal spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4. We find that in order to understand even basic magnetization measurements, a formerly overlooked in-plane anisotropy is fundamental. In addition to magnetometry, we use neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering to identify and quantify the interactions that determine the global symmetry of the system and govern the linear responses of pseudospins to external magnetic felds and their low-energy dynamics. We find that a pseudospin-only Hamiltonian is insufficient for an accurate description of the magnetism in Sr2IrO4 and that pseudospin-lattice coupling is essential. This finding should be generally applicable to other pseudospin systems with sizable orbital moments sensitive to anisotropic crystalline environments.

Correlations and dynamics of spins in an XY-like spin-glass (Ni0.4Mn0.6)TiO3 single crystal system

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (ENS and INS) experiments were performed on a single crystal of (Ni0.4Mn0.6)TiO3 (NMTO) to study the spatial correlations and dynamics of spins in the XY-like spin-glass (SG) state. Magnetization measurements reveal signatures of SG behavior in NMTO with a freezing temperature of TSG ~ 9.1 K. The ENS experiments indicated that the intensity of magnetic diffuse scattering starts to increase around 12 K, which is close to TSG. Also, spin-spin correlation lengths (zeta) at 1.5 K are approximately (21) and (73) angstrom in the interlayer and the in-plane directions, respectively, demonstrating that magnetic correlations in NMTO exhibit quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnetic order. In addition, critical exponent (beta) is determined to be 0.37 from the intensity of magnetic diffuse scattering confirms the XY-like SG state of NMTO. INS results show quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) profiles below TSG. The life-time of dynamic correlations obtained from the half width at half maximum of the Lorentzian QENS profiles, are approximately 16 and 16 ps at 10 K for two positions (0.00, 0.00, 1.52) and (0.01, 0.01, 1.50), respectively. Therefore, our experimental findings demonstrate that short-range-ordered antiferromagnetic clusters with short-lived spin correlations are present in the XY-like SG state of NMTO.

Incommensurate magnetic structure, Fe/Cu chemical disorder and magnetic interactions in the high-temperature multiferroic YBaCuFeO5

Motivated by the recent observations of incommensurate magnetic order and electric polarization in YBaCuFeO5 up to temperatures TN2 as high as 230K [1,2] we report here for the first time a model for the incommensurate magnetic structure of this material that we complement with ab-initio calculations of the magnetic exchange parameters. Using neutron powder diffraction we show that the appearance of polarization below TN2 is accompanied by the replacement of the high temperature collinear magnetic order by a circular inclined spiral with propagation vector ki=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2+-q). Moreover, we find that the polarization approximately scales with the modulus of the magnetic modulation vector q down to the lowest temperature investigated (T=3K). Further, we observe occupational Fe/Cu disorder in the FeO5-CuO5 bipyramids, although a preferential occupation of such units by Fe-Cu pairs is supported by the observed magnetic order and by density functional calculations. We calculate exchange coupling constants for different Fe/Cu distributions and show that, for those containing Fe-Cu dimers, the resulting magnetic order is compatible with the experimentally observed collinear magnetic structure (kc=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2), TN2 > T > TN1 = 440K). Based on these results we discuss possible origins for the incommensurate modulation and its coupling with ferroelectricity.
