Anomalous thermal conductivity of NaV2O5 as compared to conventional spin-Peierls system CuGeO3

A huge increase of thermal conductivity k is observed at the phase transition in stoichiometric NaV2O5. This anomaly decreases and gradually disappears with deviation from stoichiometry in Na(1-x}V2O5 (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, and 0.04). This behavior is compared with that of pure and Zn-doped CuGeO3 where only modest kinks in the k(T) curves are observed at the spin-Peierls transition. The change of k at critical temperature Tc could be partially attributed to the opening of an energy gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum excluding the scattering of thermal phonons on spin fluctuations. However, the reason for such a strong anomaly in the k(T) may lie not only in the different energy scales of CuGeO3 and NaV2O5, but also in the different character of the phase transition in NaV2O5 which can have largely a structural origin, e.g. connected with the charge ordering.

Double gap and solitonic excitations in the spin-Peierls chain CuGeO3

We have studied magnetic excitations in the dimerized spin-Peierls phase of CuGeO3, by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We measured the well-defined spin triplet dispersive mode which is gapped throughout the whole Brillouin zone. We also observed that this mode is separated by an unexpected second gap of order 2 meV from a continuum of magnetic excitations extending to higher energy. The first gap (or 'triplet gap') and its associated dispersive mode is due to the breaking of a singlet dimer into a delocalized triplet. We propose that the second gap (or 'solitonic gap') and the continuum correspond to dissociation of that triplet into two unbound spin-1/2 solitons that are separated by a dimerized region of arbitrary length.

Revival of the spin-Peierls transition in Cu_xZn_(1-x)GeO_3 under pressure

Pressure and temperature dependent susceptibility and Raman scattering experiments on single crystalline Cu_xZn_(1-x)GeO_3 have shown an unusually strong increase of the spin-Peierls phase transition temperature upon applying hydrostatic pressure. The large positive pressure coefficient (7.5 K/GPa) - almost twice as large as for the pure compound (4.5 K/GPa) - is interpreted as arising due to an increasing magnetic frustration which decreases the spin-spin correlation length, and thereby weakens the influence of the non-magnetic Zn-substitution.

Observation of three-magnon light scattering in CuGeO_3

Temperature and magnetic field dependent polarized Brillouin spectra of CuGeO_3 are reported. In addition to a bound singlet state at 30 cm^{-1}, a new feature has been observed at 18 cm^{-1}. This feature is interpreted in terms of a novel three-magnon light scattering process between excited triplet states.

Absence of spin gap in the superconducting ladder compound Sr_2Ca_{12}Cu_{24}O_{41}

Transport and 63^Cu-NMR, Knight shift and T_1, measurements performed on the two-leg spin ladders of Sr_2Ca_{12}Cu_{24}O_{41} single crystals show a collapse of the gap in ladder spin excitations when superconductivity is stabilised under a pressure of 29 kbar. These results support the prediction made with exact diagonalisation techniques in two-leg isotropic t-J ladders of a transition between a low-doping spin gap phase and a gapless 1-D Tomonaga-Luttinger regime.

Infrared signatures of the spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO3

We investigated the infrared reflectivity of several Mg- and Si-substituted CuGeO3 single crystals. The temperature dependent b-axis and c-axis optical response is reported. For T<Tsp we detected the activation of zone-boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal on the pure sample and for 1% Mg and 0.7% Si concentrations. From a detailed analysis of the phonon parameters the redshift of the B2u mode at 48 cm^-1 is observed and discussed in relation to the soft mode expected to drive the spin-Peierls phase transition in CuGeO3. Moreover, the polarization dependence of a magnetic excitation measured in transmission at 44 cm^-1 has been investigated.

Infrared reflectivity of pure and doped CuGeO3

We investigated the far- and mid-infrared reflectivity (20-6000 wavenumber) of several pure and doped CuGeO3 single crystals. The b-axis and c-axis optical response is presented for different temperatures between 4 K and 300 K. Moreover, a full group theoretical analysis of the lattice vibrational modes of CuGeO3 in the high temperature undistorted phase as well as in the low temperature spin-Peierls phase is reported and compared to the experimental results. We observe the activation of zone boundary phonons along the b axis of the crystal below the spin-Peierls transition temperature.

Magnetic interactions and the pressure phase-diagram of CuGeO3

A pressure and temperature dependent Raman study of the vibrational and spin dynamics in CuGeO3 is presented. A new low temperature, high pressure phase has been identified, and a pressure-temperature phase-diagram is proposed for CuGeO3. The pressure dependence of the effective exchange interaction, of the spin-Peierls gap, and of the spin-Peierls temperature strongly supports a model in which next nearest neighbor interactions stabilise the SP ground state. The Raman data allow for a quantitative estimate of the pressure dependence of the next nearest neighbor interactions.

Temperature and magnetic field dependence of the lattice constant in spin-Peierls cuprate CuGeO_3 studied by capacitance dilatometry in fields up to 16 Tesla

We present high resolution measurements of the thermal expansion coefficient and the magnetostriction along the a-axis of CuGeO_3 in magnetic fields up to 16 Tesla. From the pronounced anomalies of the lattice constant a occurring for both temperature and field induced phase transitions clear structural differences between the uniform, dimerized, and incommensurate phases are established. A precise field temperature phase diagram is derived and compared in detail with existing theories. Although there is a fair agreement with the calculations within the Cross Fisher theory, some significant and systematic deviations are present. In addition, our data yield a high resolution measurement of the field and temperature dependence of the spontaneous strain scaling with the spin-Peierls order parameter. Both the zero temperature values as well as the critical behavior of the order parameter are nearly field independent in the dimerized phase. A spontaneous strain is also found in the incommensurate high field phase, which is significantly smaller and shows a different critical behavior than that in the low field phase. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the spontaneous strain yields a pronounced field dependence within the dimerized phase, whereas the temperature dependence of the incommensurate lattice modulation compares well with that of the dimerization in zero magnetic field.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Incommensurate Phase of CuGeO_3

We present high resolution measurements of the specific heat and the thermal expansion of the inorganic spin--Peierls cuprate CuGeO_3 in a magnetic field of 16 Tesla. At the transition from the incommensurate to the uniform phase both quantities show pronounced anomalies, which allow to derive the uniaxial pressure dependencies of the transition temperature. In high magnetic fields the specific heat is dominated by magnetic excitations and follows a T^3 law at low temperatures. The thermal expansion measurements show the occurrence of spontaneous strains along all three lattice constants and yield high resolution measurements of the temperature dependence of the incommensurate structural distortion. The sizes of the spontaneous strains in the incommensurate phase are significantly reduced, but both their anisotropy as well as their temperature dependencies are very similar to those in zero field.

Dynamics in the dimerised and high field incommensurate phase of CuGeO$_3$

Temperature ($2.3<T<40$\ K) and magnetic field ($0<B<17$\ T) dependent far infrared absorption spectroscopy on the spin-Peierls coumpound CuGeO$_3$\ has revealed several new absorption processes in both the dimerised and high field phase of CuGeO$_3$. These results are discussed in terms of the modulation of the CuGeO$_3$\ structure. At low fields this is the well known spin-Peierls dimerisation. At high fields the data strongly suggests a field dependent incommensurate modulation of the lattice as well as of the spin structure.
