Particle creation due to tachyonic instability in relativistic stars

Dense enough compact objects were recently shown to lead to an exponentially fast increase of the vacuum energy density for some free scalar fields properly coupled to the spacetime curvature as a consequence of a tachyonic-like instability. Once the effect is triggered, the star energy density would be overwhelmed by the vacuum energy density in a few milliseconds. This demands that eventually geometry and field evolve to a new configuration to bring the vacuum back to a stationary regime. Here, we show that the vacuum fluctuations built up during the unstable epoch lead to particle creation in the final stationary state when the tachyonic instability ceases. The amount of created particles depends mostly on the duration of the unstable epoch and final stationary configuration, which are open issues at this point. We emphasize that the particle creation coming from the tachyonic instability will occur even in the adiabatic limit, where the spacetime geometry changes arbitrarily slowly, and therefore is quite distinct from the usual particle creation due to the change in the background geometry.

Sudden change in quantum and classical correlations and the Unruh effect

We use the Unruh effect to analyze the dynamics of classical and quantum correlations for a two-qubit system when one of them is uniformly accelerated for a finite amount of proper time. We show that the quantum correlation is completely destroyed in the limit of infinite acceleration, while the classical one remains nonzero. In particular, we show that such correlations exhibit the so-called sudden-change behavior as a function of acceleration. Eventually, we discuss how our results can be interpreted when the system lies in the vicinity of the event horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole.

Can quantum mechanics fool the cosmic censor?

We revisit the mechanism for violating the weak cosmic-censorship conjecture (WCCC) by overspinning a nearly-extreme charged black hole. The mechanism consists of an incoming massless neutral scalar particle, with low energy and large angular momentum, tunneling into the hole. We investigate the effect of the large angular momentum of the incoming particle on the background geometry and address recent claims that such a back-reaction would invalidate the mechanism. We show that the large angular momentum of the incident particle does not constitute an obvious impediment to the success of the overspinning quantum mechanism, although the induced back-reaction turns out to be essential to restoring the validity of the WCCC in the classical regime. These results seem to endorse the view that the "cosmic censor" may be oblivious to processes involving quantum effects.

Interaction of Hawking radiation with static sources in deSitter and Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetimes

We study and look for similarities between the response rates $R^{\rm dS}(a_0, Λ)$ and $R^{\rm SdS}(a_0, Λ, M)$ of a static scalar source with constant proper acceleration $a_0$ interacting with a massless, conformally coupled Klein-Gordon field in (i) deSitter spacetime, in the Euclidean vacuum, which describes a thermal flux of radiation emanating from the deSitter cosmological horizon, and in (ii) Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetime, in the Gibbons-Hawking vacuum, which describes thermal fluxes of radiation emanating from both the hole and the cosmological horizons, respectively, where $Λ$ is the cosmological constant and $M$ is the black hole mass. After performing the field quantization in each of the above spacetimes, we obtain the response rates at the tree level in terms of an infinite sum of zero-energy field modes possessing all possible angular momentum quantum numbers. In the case of deSitter spacetime, this formula is worked out and a closed, analytical form is obtained. In the case of Schwarzschild-deSitter spacetime such a closed formula could not be obtained, and a numerical analysis is performed. We conclude, in particular, that $R^{\rm dS}(a_0, Λ)$ and $R^{\rm SdS}(a_0, Λ, M)$ do not coincide in general, but tend to each other when $Λ\to 0$ or $a_0 \to \infty$. Our results are also contrasted and shown to agree (in the proper limits) with related ones in the literature.

Do static sources respond to massive scalar particles from the Hawking radiation as uniformly accelerated ones do in the inertial vacuum?

We revisit the recently found equivalence for the response of a static scalar source interacting with a {\em massless} Klein-Gordon field when the source is (i) static in Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Unruh vacuum associated with the Hawking radiation and (ii) uniformly accelerated in Minkowski spacetime, in the inertial vacuum, provided that the source's proper acceleration is the same in both cases. It is shown that this equivalence is broken when the massless Klein-Gordon field is replaced by a {\em massive} one.

Quantization of the electromagnetic field outside static black holes and its application to low-energy phenomena

We discuss the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of the free electromagnetic field outside static black holes in the Boulware vacuum. We use a gauge which reduces to the Feynman gauge in Minkowski spacetime. We also discuss its relation with gauges used previously. Then we apply the low-energy sector of this field theory to investigate some low-energy phenomena. First, we discuss the response rate of a static charge outside the Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions. Next, motivated by string physics, we compute the absorption cross sections of low-energy plane waves for the Schwarzschild and extreme Reissner-Nordström black holes in arbitrary dimensions higher than three.

Dark matter: the top of the iceberg?

We argue in favor of the existence of the LIPs, the least interacting particles, which would only interact with ordinary matter through gravitational field and could account for (at least) part of the dark matter. The detectability of LIP matter is addressed at the end.

Laying the ghost of the relativistic temperature transformation

Using the Unruh-DeWitt detector, it is shown that a universal and continuous Lorentz transformaion of temperature cannot exist for black-body radiation. Since any valid Lorentz transformation of temperature must be able to deal with black-body radiation, it is concluded that a universal and continuous temperature transformation does not exist.

Do static sources outside a Schwarzschild black hole radiate?

We show that static sources coupled to a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime give rise to emission and absorption of zero-energy particles due to the presence of Hawking radiation. This is in complete analogy with the description of the bremsstrahlung by a uniformly accelerated charge from the coaccelerated observers' point of view. The response rate of the source is found to coincide with that in Minkowski spacetime as a function of its proper acceleration. This result may be viewed as restoration of the equivalence principle by the Hawking effect.

Fermion Helicity Flip in Weak Gravitational Fields

The helicity flip of a spin-${\textstyle \frac{1}{2}}$ Dirac particle interacting gravitationally with a scalar field is analyzed in the context of linearized quantum gravity. It is shown that massive fermions may have their helicity flipped by gravity, in opposition to massless fermions which preserve their helicity.
