Quantum Optimization Algorithms for Strongly Correlated Many-Body Systems

This perspective article analyzes the potential and critical challenges of employing quantum optimization algorithms to investigate phase transitions in quantum many-body systems during the Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum era. The simulation of strongly correlated systems is frequently intractable on classical computers due to the exponential growth of the Hilbert space and the fermionic sign problem. In this context, we review and compare the performance of traditional Variational Quantum Algorithms, such as the Variational Quantum Eigensolver and the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm, against emerging heuristic approaches, specifically Feedback-based Quantum Algorithms, such as FALQON. We explore the applicability of these methods in the study of open phenomena in condensed matter physics, including Deconfined Quantum Criticality, strange metals, Many-Body Localization, topological phase transitions, and quantum spin liquids. We discuss how fundamental operational bottlenecks, notably expressibility- and noise-induced barren plateaus, severely compromise gradient-based optimization. We conclude that deterministic feedback-guided methods provide geometrically more robust trajectories for navigating the energy landscape of these systems, arguing that further advancement in the field will rely on deep hybridization and physics-informed circuit co-design towards fault tolerance.

Accelerating Feedback-Based Quantum Algorithms through Time Rescaling

This work investigates the impact of time rescaling on the performance of Feedback Quantum Algorithms (FQA) and their variant for optimization tasks, FALQON. We introduce TR-FQA and TR-FALQON, time-rescaled versions of FQA and FALQON, respectively. The method is applied to two representative problems: the MaxCut combinatorial optimization problem and ground-state preparation in the ANNNI quantum many-body model. The results show that TR-FALQON accelerates convergence to the optimal solution in the early layers of the circuit, significantly outperforming its standard counterpart in shallow-depth regimes. In the context of state preparation, TR-FQA demonstrates superior convergence, reducing the required circuit depth by several hundred layers. These findings highlight the potential of time rescaling as a strategy to enhance algorithmic performance on near-term quantum devices.

Using a Feedback-Based Quantum Algorithm to Analyze the Critical Properties of the ANNNI Model Without Classical Optimization

We investigate the critical properties of the Anisotropic Next-Nearest-Neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model using a feedback-based quantum algorithm (FQA). We demonstrate how this algorithm enables the computation of both ground and excited states without relying on classical optimization methods. By exploiting symmetries in the algorithm initialization, we show how targeted initial states can increase convergence and facilitate the study of excited states. Using this approach, we study the quantum phase transitions with the Finite Size Scaling method, analyze correlation functions through spin correlations in the ground state, and examine magnetic structure by calculating structure factors via the Discrete Fourier Transform. Our findings highlight FQA's potential as a versatile tool for studying not only the ANNNI model but also other quantum systems, providing insights into quantum phase transitions and the magnetic properties of complex spin models.
