Soft topological objects in topological media

Topological invariants in terms of the Green's function in momentum and real space determine properties of smooth textures within topological media. In space dimension D=1 the topological invariant N_3 in terms of the Green's function G(ω,k_x,x) determines the fermion number of the 1D soliton, while in space dimension D=3 the topological invariant N_5 in terms of the Green's function G(ω,k_x,k_y,k_z,z) determines quantization of Hall conductivity in the soliton plane within the topological insulators.

Flat band in the core of topological defects: bulk-vortex correspondence in topological superfluids with Fermi points

We discuss the dispersionless spectrum with zero energy in the linear topological defects - vortices. The flat band emerges inside the vortex living in the bulk medium containing topologically stable Fermi points in momentum space. The boundaries of the flat band in the vortex are determined by projections of the Fermi points in bulk to the vortex axis. This bulk-vortex correspondence for flat band is similar to the bulk-surface correspondence discussed earlier in the media with topologically protected lines of zeroes. In the latter case the flat band emerges on the surface of the system, and its boundary is determined by projection of the bulk nodal line on the surface.

Dimensional crossover in topological matter: Evolution of the multiple Dirac point in the layered system to the flat band on the surface

We consider the dimensional crossover in the topological matter, which involves the transformation of different types of topologically protected zeroes in the fermionic spectrum. In the considered case, the multiple Dirac (Fermi) point in quasi 2-dimensional system evolves into the flat band on the surface of the 3-dimensional system when the number of atomic layers increases. This is accompanied by formation of the spiral nodal lines in the bulk. We also discuss the topological quantum phase transition at which the surface flat band shrinks and changes its chirality, while the nodal spiral changes its helicity.

Fermions with cubic and quartic spectrum

We study exotic fermions with spectrum E^2 ~ p^{2N}. Such spectrum emerges in the vicinity of the Fermi point with multiple topological charge N, if special symmetry is obeyed. When this symmetry is violated, the multiple Fermi point typically splits into N elementary Fermi points -- Dirac points with N=1 and spectrum E^2 ~ p^2 .

Topological superfluid $^3$He-B: fermion zero modes on interfaces and in the vortex core

Many quantum condensed matter systems are strongly correlated and strongly interacting fermionic systems, which cannot be treated perturbatively. However, topology allows us to determine generic features of their fermionic spectrum, which are robust to perturbation and interaction. We discuss the nodeless 3D system, such as superfluid $^3$He-B, vacuum of Dirac fermions, and relativistic singlet and triplet supercondutors which may arise in quark matter. The systems, which have nonzero value of topological invariant, have gapless fermions on the boundary and in the core of quantized vortices. We discuss the index theorem which relates fermion zero modes on vortices with the topological invariants in combined momentum and coordinate space.

Orbital glass and spin glass states of 3He-A in aerogel

Glass states of superfluid A-like phase of 3He in aerogel induced by random orientations of aerogel strands are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In anisotropic aerogel with stretching deformation two glass phases are observed. Both phases represent the anisotropic glass of the orbital ferromagnetic vector l -- the orbital glass (OG). The phases differ by the spin structure: the spin nematic vector d can be either in the ordered spin nematic (SN) state or in the disordered spin-glass (SG) state. The first phase (OG-SN) is formed under conventional cooling from normal 3He. The second phase (OG-SG) is metastable, being obtained by cooling through the superfluid transition temperature, when large enough resonant continuous radio-frequency excitation are applied. NMR signature of different phases allows us to measure the parameter of the global anisotropy of the orbital glass induced by deformation.

Towards a solution of the cosmological constant problem

The standard model of elementary particle physics and the theory of general relativity can be extended by the introduction of a vacuum variable which is responsible for the near vanishing of the present cosmological constant (vacuum energy density). The explicit realization of this vacuum variable can be via a three-form gauge field, an aether-type velocity field, or any other field appropriate for the description of the equilibrium state corresponding to the Lorentz-invariant quantum vacuum. The extended theory has, without fine-tuning, a Minkowski-type solution of the field equations with spacetime-independent fields and provides, therefore, a possible solution of the main cosmological constant problem.

Topological superfluid 3He-B in magnetic field and Ising variable

The topological superfluid 3He-B provides many examples of the interplay of symmetry and topology. Here we consider the effect of magnetic field on topological properties of 3He-B. Magnetic field violates the time reversal symmetry. As a result, the topological invariant supported by this symmetry ceases to exist; and thus the gapless fermions on the surface of 3He-B are not protected any more by topology: they become fully gapped. Nevertheless, if perturbation of symmetry is small, the surface fermions remain relativistic with mass proportional to symmetry violating perturbation -- magnetic field. The 3He-B symmetry gives rise to the Ising variable I=+/- 1, which emerges in magnetic field and which characterizes the states of the surface of 3He-B. This variable also determines the sign of the mass term of surface fermions and the topological invariant describing their effective Hamiltonian. The line on the surface, which separates the surface domains with different I, contains 1+1 gapless fermions, which are protected by combined action of symmetry and topology.

$\hbar$ as parameter of Minkowski metric in effective theory

With the proper choice of the dimensionality of the metric components, the action for all fields becomes dimensionless. Such quantities as the vacuum speed of light c, the Planck constant \hbar, the electric charge e, the particle mass m, the Newton constant G never enter equations written in the covariant form, i.e., via the metric g^{μν}. The speed of light c and the Planck constant are parameters of a particular two-parametric family of solutions of general relativity equations describing the flat isotropic Minkowski vacuum in effective theory emerging at low energy: g^{μν}=diag(-\hbar^2, (\hbar c)^2, (\hbar c)^2, (\hbar c)^2). They parametrize the equilibrium quantum vacuum state. The physical quantities which enter the covariant equations are dimensionless quantities and dimensionful quantities of dimension of rest energy M or its power. Dimensionless quantities include the running coupling `constants' α_i; topological and geometric quantum numbers (angular momentum quantum number j, weak charge, electric charge q, hypercharge, baryonic and leptonic charges, number of atoms N, etc). Dimensionful parameters include the rest energies of particles M_n (or/and mass matrices); the gravitational coupling K with dimension of M^2; cosmological constant with dimension M^4; etc. In effective theory, the interval s has the dimension of 1/M; it characterizes the dynamics of particles in the quantum vacuum rather than geometry of space-time. We discuss the effective action, and the measured physical quantities resulting from the action, including parameters which enter the Josepson effect, quantum Hall effect, etc.

Topological invariant for superfluid 3He-B and quantum phase transitions

We consider topological invariant describing the vacuum states of superfluid 3He-B, which belongs to the special class of time-reversal invariant topological insulators and superfluids. Discrete symmetries important for classification of the topologically distinct vacuum states are discussed. One of them leads to the additional subclasses of 3He-B states and is responsible for the finite density of states of Majorana fermions living at some interfaces between the bulk states. Integer valued topological invariant is expressed in terms of the Green's function, which allows us to consider systems with interaction.

Osmotic pressure of matter and vacuum energy

The walls of the box which contains matter represent a membrane that allows the relativistic quantum vacuum to pass but not matter. That is why the pressure of matter in the box may be considered as the analog of the osmotic pressure. However, we demonstrate that the osmotic pressure of matter is modified due to interaction of matter with vacuum. This interaction induces the nonzero negative vacuum pressure inside the box, as a result the measured osmotic pressure becomes smaller than the matter pressure. As distinct from the Casimir effect, this induced vacuum pressure is the bulk effect and does not depend on the size of the box. This effect dominates in the thermodynamic limit of the infinite volume of the box. Analog of this effect has been observed in the dilute solution of 3He in liquid 4He, where the superfluid 4He plays the role of the non-relativistic quantum vacuum, and 3He atoms play the role of matter.

Vacuum energy density kicked by the electroweak crossover

Using q-theory, we show that the electroweak crossover can generate a remnant vacuum energy density Λ\sim E_{ew}^8 / E_{planck}^4, with effective electroweak energy scale E_{ew} \sim 10^{3} GeV and reduced Planck-energy scale E_{planck} \sim 10^{18} GeV. The obtained expression for the effective cosmological constant Λmay be a crucial input for the suggested solution by Arkani-Hamed et al. of the triple cosmic coincidence puzzle (why the orders of magnitude of the energy densities of vacuum, matter, and radiation are approximately the same in the present Universe).

Fermion zero modes at the boundary of superfluid 3He-B

Superfluid 3He-B belongs to the important special class of time-reversal invariant topological superfluids. It has Majorana fermions as edge states on the surface of bulk 3He-B. On the rough wall these fermion zero modes have finite density of states at E=0. It is possible that Lancaster experiments with a wire vibrating in 3He-B have already probed Majorana fermions living on the surface of the wire.

z=3 Lifshitz-Horava model and Fermi-point scenario of emergent gravity

Recently Horava proposed a model for gravity which is described by the Einstein action in the infrared, but lacks the Lorentz invariance in the high-energy region where it experiences the anisotropic scaling. We test this proposal using two condensed matter examples of emergent gravity: acoustic gravity and gravity emerging in the fermionic systems with Fermi points. We suggest that quantum hydrodynamics, which together with the quantum gravity is the non-renormalizable theory, may exhibit the anisotropic scaling in agreement with the proposal. The Fermi point scenario of emergent general relativity demonstrates that under general conditions, the infrared Einstein action may be distorted, i.e. the Horava parameter $λ$ is not necessarily equal 1 even in the low energy limit. The consistent theory requires special hierarchy of the ultra-violet energy scales and the fine-tuning mechanism for the Newton constant.

Magnon BEC and Spin Superfluidity: a 3He primer

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a quantum phenomenon of formation of the collective quantum state, in which the macroscopic number of particles occupies the lowest energy state and thus is governed by a single wave function. Here we highlight the BEC in a magnetic subsystem -- the BEC of magnons, elementary magnetic excitations. Magnon BEC is manifested as the spontaneously emerging state of the precessing spins, in which all spins precess with the same frequency and phase even in the inhomogeneous magnetic field. We consider this phenomenon on example of spin precession in superfluid phases of $^3$He. The magnon BEC in these phases has all the properties of spin superfluidity. The states of the phase-coherent precession belong to the class of the coherent quantum states, which manifest themselves by superfluidity, superconductivity, quantum Hall effect, Josephson effect and many other macroscopic quantum phenomena.

Gluonic vacuum, q-theory, and the cosmological constant

In previous work, q-theory was introduced to describe the gravitating macroscopic behavior of a conserved microscopic variable q. In this article, the gluon condensate of quantum chromodynamics is considered in terms of q-theory. The remnant vacuum energy density (i.e., cosmological constant) of an expanding universe is estimated as K_{QCD}^3 / E_{Planck}^2, with string tension K_{QCD} \approx (10^2 MeV)^2 and gravitational scale E_{Planck} \approx 10^{19} GeV. The only input for this estimate is general relativity, quantum chromodynamics, and the Hubble expansion of the present Universe.
