Shrinking and the True Power Spectrum at Decoupling

In this paper we examine the change in the estimated spatial power spectra at decoupling due to the effects of our clumpy universe which modify observational distances. We find that scales at decoupling can be significantly underestmated in our approximation of neglecting the shear of the ray bundle. We compare our results with other work on lensing and speculate on the implications for structure formation. In particular we examine a proposal to use the position of the first Doppler peak to determine $Ω$, and find that shrinking will modify the esimated curvature, so that it must be included to obtain an accurate estimate of $Ω$. Finally we consider future applications and improvements of our results.

Newtonian Evolution of the Weyl Tensor

In an interesting recent paper on the growth of inhomogeneity through the effect of gravity [1], Bertschinger and Hamilton derive equations for the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor for cold dust for both General Relativity and Newtonian theory. Their conclusion is that both in General Relativity and in Newtonian theory, in general the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor does not vanish, implying that the Lagrangian evolution of the fluid is not local. We show here that the `Newtonian' theory discussed by them is in fact not Newtonian theory {\it per se}, but rather a plausible relativistic generalisation of Newtonian theory. Newtonian cosmology itself is highly non-local irrespective of the behaviour of the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor; in this respect the Bertschinger-Hamilton generalisation is a better theory.

Integrability Conditions for Irrotational Dust with a Purely Electric Weyl Tensor: A Tetrad Analysis

All spacetimes for an irrotational collisionless fluid with a purely electric Weyl tensor, with spacetime curvature determined by the exact Einstein field equations, are shown to be integrable. These solutions include the relativistic generalisations of the Zeldovich solutions of Newtonian theory. Thus our result shows the consistency of various studies of "silent" universes (where such consistency was assumed rather than proved).

The Geometry of classical change of signature

The proposal of the possibility of change of signature in quantum cosmology has led to the study of this phenomenon in classical general relativity theory, where there has been some controversy about what is and is not possible. We here present a new analysis of such a change of signature, based on previous studies of the initial value problem in general relativity. We emphasize that there are various continuity suppositions one can make at a classical change of signature, and consider more general assumptions than made up to now. We confirm that in general such a change can take place even when the second fundamental form of the surface of change does not vanish.
