The Spin Structure of the Nucleon

We review the present understanding of the spin structure of protons and neutrons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclei collectively known as nucleons. The field of nucleon spin provides a critical window for testing Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the gauge theory of the strong interactions since it involves fundamental aspects of hadron structure, and it can be probed in detail in experiments, particularly deep inelastic lepton scattering on polarized targets. QCD was initially probed in high energy deep inelastic lepton scattering with unpolarized beams and targets. With time, interest shifted from testing perturbative QCD to illuminating the nucleon structure itself. In fact, the spin degrees of freedom of hadrons provide an essential and detailed verification of both perturbative and nonperturbative QCD dynamics. Nucleon spin was initially thought of coming mostly from the spin of its quark constituents, based on intuition from the parton model. However, the first experiments showed that this expectation was incorrect. It is now clear that nucleon physics is much more complex, involving quark orbital angular momenta as well as gluonic and sea quark contributions. Thus, the nucleon spin structure remains a most active aspect of QCD research, involving important advances such as the developments of generalized parton distributions (GPD) and transverse momentum distributions (TMD). Elastic and inelastic lepton-proton scattering, as well as photoabsorption experiments provide various ways to investigate non-perturbative QCD. Fundamental sum rules -- such as the Bjorken sum rule for polarized photoabsorption on polarized nucleons -- are also in the non-perturbative domain. This realization triggered a vigorous program to link the low energy effective hadronic description of the strong interactions to fundamental quarks and gluon degrees of freedom of...

The QCD Running Coupling

We review the present knowledge for $α_s$, the fundamental coupling underlying the interactions of quarks and gluons in QCD. The dependence of $α_s(Q^2)$ on momentum transfer $Q$ encodes the underlying dynamics of hadron physics -from color confinement in the infrared domain to asymptotic freedom at short distances. We review constraints on $α_s(Q^2)$ at high $Q^2$, as predicted by perturbative QCD, and its analytic behavior at small $Q^2$, based on models of nonperturbative dynamics. In the introductory part of this review, we explain the phenomenological meaning of $α_s$, the reason for its running, and the challenges facing a complete understanding of its analytic behavior in the infrared domain. In the second, more technical, part of the review, we discuss the behavior of $α_s(Q^2)$ in the high $Q^2$ domain of QCD. We review how $α_s$ is defined, including its renormalization scheme dependence, the definition of its renormalization scale, the utility of effective charges, as well as Commensurate Scale Relations which connect the various definitions of $α_s$ without renormalization-scale ambiguity. We also report recent measurements and theoretical analyses which have led to precise QCD predictions at high energy. In the last part of the review, we discuss the challenge of understanding the analytic behavior $α_s(Q^2)$ in the infrared domain. We also review important methods for computing $α_s$, including lattice QCD, the Schwinger-Dyson equations, the Gribov-Zwanziger analysis and light-front holographic QCD. After describing these approaches and enumerating their conflicting predictions, we discuss the origin of these discrepancies and how to remedy them. Our aim is not only to review the advances in this difficult area, but also to suggest what could be an optimal definition of $α_s$ in order to bring better unity to the subject.

Determination of $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ at five loops from holographic QCD

The recent determination of the $β$--function of the QCD running coupling $α_{\overline{MS}}(Q^2)$ to 5-loops{\color{blue},} provides a verification of the convergence of a novel method for determining the fundamental QCD parameter $Λ_s$ based on the Light-Front Holographic approach to nonperturbative QCD. The new 5-loop analysis, together with improvements in determining the holographic QCD nonperturbative scale parameter $κ$ from hadronic spectroscopy, leads to an improved precision of the value of $Λ_s$ in the ${\overline{MS}}$ scheme close to a factor of two; we find $Λ^{(3)}_{\overline{MS}}=0.339\pm0.019$ GeV for $n_{f}=3$, in excellent agreement with the world average, $Λ_{\overline{MS}}^{(3)}=0.332\pm0.017$ GeV. We also discuss the constraints imposed on the scale dependence of the strong coupling in the nonperturbative domain by superconformal quantum mechanics and its holographic embedding in anti-de Sitter space.

On the Interface between Perturbative and Nonperturbative QCD

The QCD running coupling $α_s(Q^2)$ sets the strength of the interactions of quarks and gluons as a function of the momentum transfer $Q$. The $Q^2$ dependence of the coupling is required to describe hadronic interactions at both large and short distances. In this article we adopt the light-front holographic approach to strongly-coupled QCD, a formalism which incorporates confinement, predicts the spectroscopy of hadrons composed of light quarks, and describes the low-$Q^2$ analytic behavior of the strong coupling $α_s(Q^2)$. The high-$Q^2$ dependence of the coupling $α_s(Q^2)$ is specified by perturbative QCD and its renormalization group equation. The matching of the high and low $Q^2$ regimes of $α_s(Q^2)$ then determines the scale $Q_0$ which sets the interface between perturbative and nonperturbative hadron dynamics. The value of $Q_0$ can be used to set the factorization scale for DGLAP evolution of hadronic structure functions and the ERBL evolution of distribution amplitudes. We discuss the scheme-dependence of the value of $Q_0$ and the infrared fixed-point of the QCD coupling. Our analysis is carried out for the $\bar{MS}$, $g_1$, $MOM$ and $V$ renormalization schemes. Our results show that the discrepancies on the value of $α_s$ at large distance seen in the literature can be explained by different choices of renormalization schemes. We also provide the formulae to compute $α_s(Q^2)$ over the entire range of space-like momentum transfer for the different renormalization schemes discussed in this article.

Light-Front Holography and Superconformal Quantum Mechanics: A New Approach to Hadron Structure and Color Confinement

A primary question in hadron physics is how the mass scale for hadrons consisting of light quarks, such as the proton, emerges from the QCD Lagrangian even in the limit of zero quark mass. If one requires the effective action which underlies the QCD Lagrangian to remain conformally invariant and extends the formalism of de Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan to light-front Hamiltonian theory, then a unique, color-confining potential with a mass parameter $κ$ emerges. The actual value of the parameter $κ$ is not set by the model - only ratios of hadron masses and other hadronic mass scales are predicted. The result is a nonperturbative, relativistic light-front quantum mechanical wave equation, the Light-Front Schrödinger Equation which incorporates color confinement and other essential spectroscopic and dynamical features of hadron physics, including a massless pion for zero quark mass and linear Regge trajectories with the identical slope in the radial quantum number $n$ and orbital angular momentum $L$. The same light-front equations for mesons with spin $J$ also can be derived from the holographic mapping to QCD (3+1) at fixed light-front time from the soft-wall model modification of AdS$_5$ space with a specific dilaton profile. Light-front holography thus provides a precise relation between the bound-state amplitudes in the fifth dimension of AdS space and the boost-invariant light-front wavefunctions describing the internal structure of hadrons in physical space-time. One can also extend the analysis to baryons using superconformal algebra - $2 \times 2$ supersymmetric representations of the conformal group. The resulting fermionic LF bound-state equations predict striking similarities between the meson and baryon spectra. In fact, the holographic QCD light-front Hamiltonians for the states on the meson and baryon trajectories are identical if one shifts the internal angular...

The Relation between the Perturbative QCD Scale $Λ_s$ and Hadronic Masses from Light-Front Holography

QCD is well understood at short distances where perturbative calculations are feasible. Establishing an explicit analytic connection between the short-distance regime and the large-distance physics of quark confinement has been a long-sought goal. A major challenge is to relate the scale $Λ_{s}$ underlying the evolution of the QCD coupling in the perturbative regime to the masses of hadrons. We show here how new theoretical insights into the behavior of QCD at large distances leads to such a relation. The resulting prediction for $Λ_{s}$ in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme agrees well with experimental measurements. Conversely, the relation can be used to predict the masses of hadrons composed of light quarks with the measured value of $Λ_{s}$ as the sole parameter. We also use "light-front holography" to determine the analytic form of $α_s(Q^2)$ at small $Q^2$.

Studies of Nucleon Resonance Structure in Exclusive Meson Electroproduction

Studies of the structure of excited baryons are key to the N* program at Jefferson Lab. Within the first year of data taking with the Hall B CLAS12 detector following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment will aim to extract the N* electrocouplings at high photon virtualities Q2. This experiment will allow exploration of the structure of N* resonances at the highest photon virtualities ever yet achieved, with a kinematic reach up to Q2 = 12 GeV2. This high-Q2 reach will make it possible to probe the excited nucleon structures at distance scales ranging from where effective degrees of freedom, such as constituent quarks, are dominant through the transition to where nearly massless bare-quark degrees of freedom are relevant. In this document, we present a detailed description of the physics that can be addressed through N* structure studies in exclusive meson electroproduction. The discussion includes recent advances in reaction theory for extracting N* electrocouplings from meson electroproduction off protons, along with QCD-based approaches to the theoretical interpretation of these fundamental quantities. This program will afford access to the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interaction responsible for resonance formation, and will be crucial in understanding the nature of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in baryons, and how excited nucleons emerge from QCD.

Hamiltonian light-front field theory in a basis function approach

Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory constitutes a framework for the non-perturbative solution of invariant masses and correlated parton amplitudes of self-bound systems. By choosing the light-front gauge and adopting a basis function representation, we obtain a large, sparse, Hamiltonian matrix for mass eigenstates of gauge theories that is solvable by adapting the ab initio no-core methods of nuclear many-body theory. Full covariance is recovered in the continuum limit, the infinite matrix limit. There is considerable freedom in the choice of the orthonormal and complete set of basis functions with convenience and convergence rates providing key considerations. Here, we use a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model obtained from light-front holography. We outline our approach and present illustrative features of some non-interacting systems in a cavity. We illustrate the first steps towards solving QED by obtaining the mass eigenstates of an electron in a cavity in small basis spaces and discuss the computational challenges.

Hamiltonian light-front field theory within an AdS/QCD basis

Non-perturbative Hamiltonian light-front quantum field theory presents opportunities and challenges that bridge particle physics and nuclear physics. Fundamental theories, such as Quantum Chromodynmamics (QCD) and Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) offer the promise of great predictive power spanning phenomena on all scales from the microscopic to cosmic scales, but new tools that do not rely exclusively on perturbation theory are required to make connection from one scale to the next. We outline recent theoretical and computational progress to build these bridges and provide illustrative results for nuclear structure and quantum field theory. As our framework we choose light-front gauge and a basis function representation with two-dimensional harmonic oscillator basis for transverse modes that corresponds with eigensolutions of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model obtained from light-front holography.

Hadron Spectroscopy and Wavefunctions in QCD and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

The AdS/CFT correspondence has led to important insights into the properties of quantum chromodynamics even though QCD is a broken conformal theory. A holographic model based on a truncated AdS space can be used to obtain the hadronic spectrum of light $q \bar q, qqq$ and $gg$ bound states. Specific hadrons are identified by the correspondence of string modes with the dimension of the interpolating operator of the hadron's valence Fock state, including orbital angular momentum excitations. The predicted mass spectrum is linear $M \propto L$ at high orbital angular momentum. Since only one parameter, the QCD scale $Λ_{QCD}$, is introduced, the agreement with the pattern of physical states is remarkable. In particular, the ratio of $Δ$ to nucleon trajectories is determined by the ratio of zeros of Bessel functions. One can also use the extended AdS/CFT space-time theory to obtain a model for hadronic light-front wavefunctions, thus providing a relativistic description of hadrons in QCD at the amplitude level. The model wavefunctions display confinement at large inter-quark separation and conformal symmetry at short distances. In particular, the scaling and conformal properties of the LFWFs at high relative momenta agree with perturbative QCD. These AdS/CFT model wavefunctions could be used as an initial ansatz for a variational treatment of the light-front QCD Hamiltonian. Hadron form factors in both the space-like and time-like regions are also predicted.

Light-Front Hadron Dynamics and AdS/CFT Correspondence

A remarkable consequence of the AdS/CFT correspondence is the nonperturbative derivation of dimensional counting rules for hard scattering processes. Using string/gauge duality we derive the QCD power behavior of light-front Fock-state hadronic wavefunctions for hard scattering in the large-$r$ region of the AdS space from the conformal isometries which determine the scaling of string states as we approach the boundary from the interior of AdS space. The nonperturbative scaling results are obtained for spin-zero and spin-$\half$ hadrons and are extended to include the orbital angular momentum dependence of the constituents in the light-front Fock-expansion. The correspondence with string states is considered for hadronic states of arbitrary orbital angular momentum for a given hadron of spin $\leq 2$. We examine the implications of the color configuration of hadronic Fock-states for the QCD structure of scattering amplitudes at large $N_C$. Quark interchange amplitudes emerge as the dominant large $N_C$ scattering mechanisms for conformal QCD.
