Quantum state transfer in imperfect artificial spin networks

High-fidelity quantum computation and quantum state transfer are possible in short spin chains. We exploit a system based on a dispersive qubit-boson interaction to mimic XY coupling. In this model, the usually assumed nearest-neighbors coupling is no more valid: all the qubits are mutually coupled. We analyze the performances of our model for quantum state transfer showing how pre-engineered coupling rates allow for nearly optimal state transfer. We address a setup of superconducting qubits coupled to a microstrip cavity in which our analysis may be applied.

Decoherence due to telegraph and 1/f noise in Josephson qubits

We study decoherence due to random telegraph and 1/f noise in Josephson qubits. We illustrate differences between gaussian and non gaussian effects at different working points and for different protocols. Features of the intrinsically non-gaussian and non-Markovian low-frequency noise may explain the rich physics observed in the spectroscopy and the dynamics of charge based devices.

Dynamical entanglement-transfer for quantum information networks

A key element in the architecture of a quantum information processing network is a reliable physical interface between fields and qubits. We study a process of entanglement transfer engineering, where two remote qubits respectively interact with entangled two-mode continuous variable (CV) field. We quantify the entanglement induced in the qubit state at the expenses of the loss of entanglement in the CV system. We discuss the range of mixed entangled states which can be obtained with this set-up. Furthermore, we suggest a protocol to determine the residual entangling power of the light fields, inferring, thus, the entanglement left in the field modes which, after the interaction, are no longer in a Gaussian state. Two different set-ups are proposed: a cavity-QED system and an interface between superconducting qubits and field modes. We address in details the practical difficulties inherent in these two proposals, showing that the latter is promising under many aspects.

Decoherence in Josephson qubits

A high degree of quantum coherence is a crucial requirement for the implementation of quantum logic devices. Solid state nanodevices seem particularly promising from the point of view of integrability and flexibility in the design. However decoherence is a serious limitation, due to the presence of many types low energy excitations in the ``internal'' environment and of ``external'' sources due to the control circuitery. Here we study both kind of dephasing in a special implementation, the charge Josephson qubit, however many of our results are applicable to a large class of solid state qubits. This is the case of 1/f noise for which we introduce and study a model of an environment of bistable fluctuatiors. External sources of noise are analized in terms of a suitable harmonic oscillator environment and the explicit mapping on the spin boson model is presented. We perform a detailed investigation of various computation procedures (single shot measurements, repeated measurements) and discuss the problem of the information needed to characterize the effect of the environment. For a fluctuator environment with 1/f spectrum memory effects turn out to be important. Although in general information beyond the power spectrum is needed, in many situations this results in the knowledge of only one more microscopic parameter of the environment. This allows to determine which degrees of freedom of the environment are effective sources of decoherence in each different physical situation considered.

Decoherence due to discrete noise in Josephson qubits

We study decoherence produced by a discrete environment on a charge Josephson qubit by introducing a model of an environment of bistable fluctuators. In particular we address the effect of $1/f$ noise where memory effects play an important role. We perform a detailed investigation of various computation procedures (single shot measurements, repeated measurements) and discuss the problem of the information needed to characterize the effect of the environment. Although in general information beyond the power spectrum is needed, in many situations this results in the knowledge of only one more microscopic parameter of the environment. This allows to determine which degrees of freedom of the environment are effective sources of decoherence in each different physical situation considered.

Josephson nanocircuit in the presence of linear quantum noise

We derive the effective hamiltonian for a charge-Josephson qubit in a circuit with no use of phenomenological arguments, showing how energy renormalizations induced by the environment appear with no need of phenomenological counterterms. This analysis may be important for multiqubit systems and geometric quantum computation.

Interplay between pairing and exchange in small metallic dots

We study the effects of the mesoscopic fluctuations on the competition between exchange and pairing interactions in ultrasmall metallic dots when the mean level spacing is comparable or larger than the BCS pairing energy. Due to mesoscopic fluctuations, the probability to have a non-zero spin ground state may be non-vanishing and shows universal features related to both level statistics and interaction. Sample to sample fluctuations of the renormalized pairing are enlightened.

Communicating Josephson Qubits

We propose a scheme to implement a quantum information transfer protocol with a superconducting circuit and Josephson charge qubits. The information exchange is mediated by an L-C resonator used as a data bus. The main decoherence sources are analyzed in detail.

Decoherence and 1/f noise in Josephson qubits

We propose and study a model of dephasing due to an environment of bistable fluctuators. We apply our analysis to decoherence of Josephson Qubits, induced by background charges present in the substrate, which are also responsible for the 1/f noise. The discrete nature of the environment leads to a number of new features which are mostly pronounced for slowly moving charges. Far away from degeneracy this model for the dephasing is solved exactly.

Scaling of Entanglement close to a Quantum Phase Transitions

In this Letter we discuss the entanglement near a quantum phase transition by analyzing the properties of the concurrence for a class of exactly solvable models in one dimension. We find that entanglement can be classified in the framework of scaling theory. Further, we reveal a profound difference between classical correlations and the non-local quantum correlation, entanglement: the correlation length diverges at the phase transition, whereas entanglement in general remains short ranged.

Mesoscopic fluctuations in superconducting dots at finite temperatures

We study the thermodynamics of ultrasmall metallic grains with the mean level spacing comparable or larger than the pairing correlation energy in the whole range of temperatures. A complete picture of the thermodynamics in such systems is given taking into account the effects of disorder, parity and classical and quantum fluctuations. Both spin susceptibility and specific heat turn out to be sensitive probes to detect superconducting correlations in such samples.

The BCS model and the off shell Bethe ansatz for vertex models

We study the connection between the BCS pairing model and the inhomogeneous vertex model. The two spectral problems coincide in the quasi-classical limit of the off-shell Bethe Ansatz of the disordered six vertex model. The latter problem is transformed into an auxiliary spectral problem which corresponds to the diagonalization of the integrals of motion of the BCS model. A generating functional whose quasi classical expansion leads to the constants of motion of the BCS model and in particular the Hamiltonian, is identified.

Correlated tunneling into a superconductor in a multiprobe hybrid structure

We consider tunneling in a hybrid system consisting of a superconductor with two or more probe electrodes which can be either normal metals or polarized ferromagnets. In particular we study transport at subgap voltages and temperatures. Besides Andreev pair tunneling at each contact, in multi-probe structures subgap transport involves additional channels, which are due to coherent propagation of two particles (electrons or holes), each originating from a different probe electrode. The relevant processes are electron cotunneling through the superconductor and conversion of two electrons stemming from different probes in a Cooper pair. These processes are non-local and decay when the distance between the pair of involved contacts is larger than the superconducting coherence length. The conductance matrix of a the three terminal hybrid structure is calculated. The multi-probe processes enhance the conductance of each contact. If the contacts are magnetically polarized the contribution of the various conduction channels may be separately detected.

Quantum fluctuations in superconducting dots at finite temperature

We study the thermodynamics of ultrasmall metallic grains with level spacing $δ$ comparable or smaller than the pairing correlation energy, at finite temperatures, $T \gsim δ$. We describe a method which allows to find quantum corrections to the effect of classical fluctuations. We present results for thermodynamic quantities in ordered grains and for the reentrant odd susceptibility in disordered grains.

Re-entrant spin susceptibility of a superconducting grain

We study the spin susceptibility chi of a small, isolated superconducting grain. Due to the interplay between parity effects and pairing correlations, the dependence of chi on temperature T is qualitatively different from the standard BCS result valid in the bulk limit. If the number of electrons on the grain is odd, chi shows a re-entrant behavior as a function of temperature. This behavior persists even in the case of ultrasmall grains where the mean level spacing is much larger than the BCS gap. If the number of electrons is even, chi(T) is exponentially small at low temperatures.

Duality in the Quantum Dissipative Villain Model and application to Mesoscopic Josephson Junction Circuits

We study exact self duality in the model of a Brownian particle in a washboard (WB) potential which describes a Josephson Junction (JJ) coupled to an environment, for arbitrary temperature and arbitrary form of the spectral density of the environment. To this end we introduce the Quantum Dissipative Villain Model (QDVM), which models tunneling of a degree of freedom coupled to a linear quantum environment through an infinite set of states. We derive general exact mappings on various dual discrete representations (one-dimensional Coulomb gases or surface roughening models) which are exactly self-dual. Then we show how the QDVM maps exactly onto the WB model and use duality relations to calculate the leading terms of the total impedance of a JJ circuit, for general frequency dependence of the spectral density of the environment and arbitrary temperature.

The Quantum Dissipative Villain Model

We introduce the Quantum Dissipative Villain (QDV) model as a prototype model to study tunneling in dissipative quantum mechanics. Dissipation is provided by a coupled linear environment. In the QDV model, the discrete character of a tunneling degree of freedom coupled to an environment is explicit, leading to a rich dual structure. We derive general exact mappings of the QDV model on several dual discrete representations, including pairs of self-dual models, for general linear environments and arbitrary temperatures. Self-duality allows to write exact equations for each correlation function of each representation. Analogies with the theory of classical network transformations are also presented. Finally we discuss the fundamental character of the QDV model. For instance, the standard Caldeira-Leggett model, which describes mesoscopic Josephson junctions in a circuit and many other physical systems, is a special QDV model. The self-dual structure of the QDV model allows then the exact generalization of the Schmid approximate self-duality to general linear environments and arbitrary temperatures.

A small superconducting grain in the canonical ensemble

By means of the Lanczos method we analyze superconducting correlations in ultrasmall grains at fixed particle number. We compute the ground state properties and the excitation gap of the pairing Hamiltonian as a function of the level spacing $δ$. Both quantities turn out to be parity dependent and universal functions of the ratio $δ/Δ$ ($Δ$ is the BCS gap). We then characterize superconductivity in the canonical ensemble from the scaling behavior of correlation functions in energy space.
