Gravitational waves from compact binaries to the fourth post-Newtonian order

The precise knowledge of the gravitational phase evolution of compact binaries is crucial to the data analysis for gravitational waves. Until recently, it was known analytically (for non-spinning systems) up to the 3.5 post-Newtonian (PN) order, i.e. up to the $(v/c)^7$ correction beyond the leading order quadrupole formula. Using a PN-multipolar-post-Minkowskian algorithm, we have pushed the accuracy to the next 4PN level. This derivation involved challenging technical issues, due to the appearance of non-physical divergences, which have to be properly regularized, as well as effects of non-linear multipole interactions.

Analytic approximations, perturbation methods, and their applications

The paper summarizes the parallel session B3 {\em Analytic approximations, perturbation methods, and their applications} of the GR18 conference. The talks in the session reported notably recent advances in black hole perturbations and post-Newtonian approximations as applied to sources of gravitational waves.

CFC+: Improved dynamics and gravitational waveforms from relativistic core collapse simulations

Core collapse supernovae are a promising source of detectable gravitational waves. Most of the existing (multidimensional) numerical simulations of core collapse in general relativity have been done using approximations of the Einstein field equations. As recently shown by Dimmelmeier et al (2002a,b), one of the most interesting such approximation is the so-called conformal flatness condition (CFC) of Isenberg, Wilson and Mathews. Building on this previous work we present here new results from numerical simulations of relativistic rotational core collapse in axisymmetry, aiming at improving the dynamics and the gravitational waveforms. The computer code used for these simulations evolves the coupled system of metric and fluid equations using the 3+1 formalism, specialized to a new framework for the gravitational field equations which we call CFC+. In this approach we add new degrees of freedom to the original CFC equations, which extend them by terms of second post-Newtonian order. The corrections for CFC+ are computed solving a system of elliptic linear equations. The new formalism is assessed with time evolutions of both rotating neutron stars in equilibrium and gravitational core collapse of rotating polytropes. Gravitational wave signals for a comprehensive sample of collapse models are extracted using either the quadrupole formula or directly from the metric. We discuss our results on the dynamics and the gravitational wave emission through a detailed comparison between CFC and CFC+ simulations. The main conclusion is that, for the neutron star spacetimes analyzed in the present work, no significant differences are found among CFC, CFC+, and full general relativity, which highlights the suitability of the former.

A skeleton approximate solution of the Einstein field equations for multiple black-hole systems

An approximate analytical and non-linear solution of the Einstein field equations is derived for a system of multiple non-rotating black holes. The associated space-time has the same asymptotic structure as the Brill-Lindquist initial data solution for multiple black holes. The system admits an Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Hamiltonian that can particularly evolve the Brill-Lindquist solution over finite time intervals. The gravitational field of this model may properly be referred to as a skeleton approximate solution of the Einstein field equations. The approximation is based on a conformally flat truncation, which excludes gravitational radiation, as well as a removal of some additional gravitational field energy. After these two simplifications, only source terms proportional to Dirac delta distributions remain in the constraint equations. The skeleton Hamiltonian is exact in the test-body limit, it leads to the Einsteinian dynamics up to the first post-Newtonian approximation, and in the time-symmetric limit it gives the energy of the Brill-Lindquist solution exactly. The skeleton model for binary systems may be regarded as a kind of analytical counterpart to the numerical treatment of orbiting Misner-Lindquist binary black holes proposed by Gourgoulhon, Grandclement, and Bonazzola, even if they actually treat the corotating case. Along circular orbits, the two-black-hole skeleton solution is quasi-stationary and it fulfills the important property of equality of Komar and ADM masses. Explicit calculations for the determination of the last stable circular orbit of the binary system are performed up to the tenth post-Newtonian order within the skeleton model.

The binary black-hole dynamics at the third-and-a-half post-Newtonian order in the ADM-formalism

We specialize the radiation-reaction part of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Hamiltonian for many non-spinning point-like bodies, calculated by Jaranowski and Schaefer [1], to third-and-a-half post-Newtonian approximation to general relativity, to binary systems. This Hamiltonian is used for the computation of the instantaneous gravitational energy loss of a binary to 1PN reactive order. We also derive the equations of motion, which include PN reactive terms via Hamiltonian and Euler-Lagrangian approaches. The results are consistent with the expressions for reactive acceleration provided by Iyer-Will formalism in Ref. [2] in a general class of gauges.
