Renormalized O(N) model at next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion: Effects of the Landau pole

Apparently convergent contributions of resummed perturbative series at the next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion in the O(N) model are reanalyzed in terms of renormalizability. Compared to our earlier article [G. Fejos et al., Phys. Rev. D 80, 025015 (2009)], an additional subtraction is performed. We show numerically that this is indispensable for diminishing the cutoff sensitivity of some integrals below the scale of the Landau pole. Following the method of our earlier article, an improved counterterm Lagrangian is constructed in the two-particle irreducible formalism, with and without the use of an auxiliary field formulation.

Chiral symmetry breaking patterns in the U_L(n)xU_R(n) meson model

Chiral symmetry breaking patterns are investigated in the U_L(n)xU_R(n) meson model. It is shown that new classes of minima of the effective potential belonging to the center of the Lie algebra exist for arbitrary flavor number n. The true ground state of the system is searched nonperturbatively and although multiple local minima of the effective potential may exist, it is argued that in regions of the parameter space applicable for the strong interaction, strictly a U_L(n)xU_R(n)->U_V(n) spontaneous symmetry breaking is possible. The reason behind this is the existence of a discrete subset of axial symmetries, which connects various U_V(n) symmetric vacua of the theory. The results are in agreement with the Vafa-Witten theorem of QCD, illustrating that it remains valid, even without gauge fields, for an effective model of the strong interaction.

Finite temperature symmetry restoration in the U_L(3)xU_R(3) linear sigma model from a large-n approximation

A recently proposed approximate large-n ground state solution of the U_L(n)xU_R(n) symmetric linear sigma model is investigated at finite temperature. We study the coupled evaporation of two condensates corresponding to the symmetry breaking pattern U_L(3)xU_R(3) -> U_V(2), realized by the ground state in certain parts of the coupling space. The region of the fluctuation induced first order transitions and its second order boundary is mapped out. The existence of a tricritical point is conjectured.

Resummed perturbative series of scalar quantum field theories in two-particle-irreducible formalism

In this thesis the two-particle-irreducible (2PI) formalism is investigated with several applications, particular emphasis on renormalizability. In the O(N) symmetric scalar quantum field theory formulated with auxiliary fields it is pointed out that, statements recently appeared in the literature which raised doubts on renormalizability, are wrong. Counterterms are constructed in details in the NLO of the large-N expansion. The renormalizability is demonstrated at the same level of the approximation also with eliminating the auxiliary field. In the one component ϕ^4 model (at T=0) a method using renormalization conditions is developed, which gives directly finite equations for the 1- and 2-point functions. This solves the problems of numerical precision of the counterterm formulated renormalization. In the two-loop 2PI approximation the equivalence of the new method and the procedure formulated with counterterms is shown, both analytically and numerically. For the counterterm method also a new algorithm is developed, which accelerates the numerical convergence. In the U(N)xU(N) model, an approximate solution of the field equations in the large-N limit is found in the broken phase, for a condensate proportional to the unit matrix. The approximation assumes the presence of a mass-hierarchy between the scalar and pseudoscalar fields. The validity of the latter assumption is investigated in the whole parameter space numerically. The stability of the solution against a more general condensate is checked. It is shown that, there exists a region of the parameter space, where the condensate corresponding to the "8" direction of the SU(3) classification can arise spontaneously. This solution is found to be metastable, but could transform into the true ground state, when a moderate external source is applied along the "8" direction.

Broken symmetry phase solution of the phi^4 model at two-loop level of the Phi-derivable approximation

The set of coupled equations for the self-consistent propagator and the field expectation value is solved numerically with high accuracy in Euclidean space at zero temperature and in the broken symmetry phase of the phi^4 model. Explicitly finite equations are derived with the adaptation of the renormalization method of van Hees and Knoll [H. van Hees, J. Knoll, Phys. Rev. D65, 025010 (2001)] to the case of non-vanishing field expectation value. The set of renormalization conditions used in this method leads to the same set of counterterms obtained recently in A. Patkos, Zs. Szep, Nucl. Phys. A811, 329-352 (2008). This makes possible the direct comparison of the accurate solution of explicitly finite equations with the solution of renormalized equations containing counterterms. The numerically efficient way of solving iteratively these latter equations is obtained by deriving at each order of the iteration new counterterms which evolve during the iteration process towards the counterterms determined based on the asymptotic behavior of the converged propagator. As shown at different values of the coupling, the use of these evolving counterterms accelerates the convergence of the solution of the equations.

Spontaneously broken ground states of the U(n)_L x U(n)_R linear sigma model at large n

Symmetry breaking patterns of the U(n)_L x U(n)_R symmetric meson model are investigated in a formulation involving three auxiliary composite fields. The effective potential is constructed at leading order in the 1/n expansion for a condensate belonging to the center of the U(n) group. A wide region is found in the coupling space where in addition to the condensate proportional to the unit matrix, also metastable minima exist, in which a further breakdown of the diagonal U_V(n) symmetry to U_V(n-1) is realized. Application of a moderate external field conjugate to this component of the order parameter changes this state into the true ground state of the system.

A renormalized large-n solution of the U(n) x U(n) linear sigma model in the broken symmetry phase

Dyson-Schwinger equations for the U(n) x U(n) symmetric matrix sigma model reformulated with two auxiliary fields in a background breaking the symmetry to U(n) are studied in the so-called bare vertex approximation. A large n solution is constructed under the supplementary assumption so that the scalar components are much heavier than the pseudoscalars. The renormalizability of the solution is investigated by explicit construction of the counterterms.

Renormalized effective actions for the O(N) model at next-to-leading order of the 1/N expansion

A fully explicit renormalized quantum action functional is constructed for the O(N)-model in the auxiliary field formulation at next-to-leading order (NLO) of the 1/N expansion. Counterterms are consistently and explicitly derived for arbitrary constant vacuum expectation value of the scalar and auxiliary fields. The renormalized NLO pion propagator is exact at this order and satisfies Goldstone's theorem. Elimination of the auxiliary field sector at the level of the functional provides with order N^0 accuracy the renormalized effective action of the model in terms of the original variables. Alternative elimination of the pion and sigma propagators provides the renormalized NLO effective potential for the expectation values of the N-vector and of the auxiliary field with the same accuracy.

Renormalisability of the 2PI-Hartree approximation of multicomponent scalar models in the broken symmetry phase

Non-perturbative renormalisation of a general class of scalar field theories is performed at the Hartree level truncation of the 2PI effective action in the broken symmetry regime. Renormalised equations are explicitly constructed for the one- and two-point functions. The non-perturbative counterterms are deduced from the conditions for the cancellation of the overall and the subdivergences in the complete Hartree-Dyson-Schwinger equations, with a transparent method. The procedure proposed in the present paper is shown to be equivalent to the iterative renormalisation method of Blaizot et al., Nucl. Phys. A736 (2004) 149.
