Pseudopotential of birhythmic van der Pol type systems with correlated noise

We propose to compute the effective activation energy, usually referred to a pseudopotential or quasipotential, of a birhythmic system -- a van der Pol like oscillator -- in the presence of correlated noise. It is demonstrated, with analytical techniques and numerical simulations, that the correlated noise can be taken into account and one can retrieve the low noise rate of the escapes. We thus conclude that a pseudopotential, or an effective activation energy, is a realistic description for the stability of birhythmic attractors also in the presence of correlated noise.

Stochastic Bifurcations induced by correlated Noise in a Birhythmic van der Pol System

We investigate the effects of exponentially correlated noise on birhythmic van der Pol type oscillators. The analytical results are obtained applying the quasi-harmonic assumption to the Langevin equation to derive an approximated Fokker-Planck equation. This approach allows to analytically derive the probability distributions as well as the activation energies associated to switching between coexisting attractors. The stationary probability density function of the van der Pol oscillator reveals the influence of the correlation time on the dynamics. Stochastic bifurcations are discussed through a qualitative change of the stationary probability distribution, which indicates that noise intensity and correlation time can be treated as bifurcation parameters. Comparing the analytical and numerical results, we find good agreement both when the frequencies of the attractors are about equal or when they are markedly different.

Domain walls and bubble-droplets in immiscible binary Bose gases

The existence and stability of domain walls (DWs) and bubble-droplet (BD) states in binary mixtures of quasi-one-dimensional ultracold Bose gases with inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions is considered. Previously, DWs were studied by means of coupled systems of Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) with cubic terms, which model immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We address immiscible BECs with two- and three-body repulsive interactions, as well as binary Tonks--Girardeau (TG) gases, using systems of GPEs with cubic and quintic nonlinearities for the binary BEC, and coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with quintic terms for the TG gases. Exact DW\ solutions are found for the symmetric BEC mixture, with equal intra-species scattering lengths. Stable asymmetric DWs in the BEC mixtures with dissimilar interactions in the two components, as well as of symmetric and asymmetric DWs in the binary TG gas, are found by means of numerical and approximate analytical methods. In the BEC system, DWs can be easily put in motion by phase imprinting. Combining a DW and anti-DW on a ring, we construct BD states for both the BEC and TG models. These consist of a dark soliton in one component (the "bubble"), and a bright soliton (the "droplet") in the other. In the BEC system, these composite states are mobile too.

Noise Effects on birhythmic Josephson Junction coupled to a Resonator

We study the effect of noise on a Josephson junction that, coupled to a linear $RLC$ resonator, can oscillate at two frequencies. To establish the global stability of the attractors, we estimate the position of the separatrix, an essential information to establish the stability of the attractor for this multidimensional system, from the analysis of the mean first passage time. We find that the frequency locked to the resonator is most stable at low bias, and less stable at high bias, where the resonator exhibits the largest oscillations. The change in the birhythmic region is dramatic, for the effective barrier changes of an order of magnitude and the corresponding lifetime of about seven decades.

Escape Time of Josephson Junctions for Signal Detection

In this Chapter we investigate with the methods of signal detection the response of a Josephson junction to a perturbation to decide if the perturbation contains a coherent oscillation embedded in the background noise. When a Josephson Junction is irradiated by an external noisy source, it eventually leaves the static state and reaches a steady voltage state. The appearance of a voltage step allows to measure the time spent in the metastable state before the transition to the running state, thus defining an escape time. The distribution of the escape times depends upon the characteristics of the noise and the Josephson junction. Moreover, the properties of the distribution depends on the features of the signal (amplitude, frequency and phase), which can be therefore inferred through the appropriate signal processing methods. Signal detection with JJ is interesting for practical purposes, inasmuch as the superconductive elements can be (in principle) cooled to the absolute zero and therefore can add (in practice) as little intrinsic noise as refrigeration allows. It is relevant that the escape times bear a hallmark of the noise itself. The spectrum of the fluctuations due to the intrinsic classical (owed to thermal or environmental disturbances) or quantum (due to the tunnel across the barrier) sources are different. Therefore, a careful analysis of the escape times could also assist to discriminate the nature of the noise.

Negative Differential Resistance due to Nonlinearities in Single and Stacked Josephson Junctions

Josephson junction systems with a negative differential resistance play an essential role for applications. As a well known example, long Josephson junctions of the BSCCO type have been considered as a source of THz radiation in recent experiments. Numerical results for the dynamics of the fluxon system have demonstrated that a cavity induced negative differential resistance plays a crucial role for the emission of electromagnetic radiation. We consider the case of a negative differential resistance region in the McCumber curve itself of a single junction and found that it has an effect on the emission of electromagnetic radiation. Two different shapes of negative differential resistance region are considered and we found it is essential to distinguish between current bias and voltage bias.

Escape Time Characterization of Pendular Fabry-Perot

We show that an escape from the potential minimum of Fabry-Perot interferometers can be detected measuring the associated sudden change of reflectivity. We demonstrate that the loss of information that occurs retaining only the sequence of escapes, rather than the full trajectory, can be very mild and can lead to an effective method to reveal the noise intensity or the presence of a coherent signal.

Effective Fokker-Planck Equation for Birhythmic Modified van der Pol Oscillator

We present an explicit solution based on the phase-amplitude approximation of the Fokker-Planck equation associated with the Langevin equation of the birhythmic modified van der Pol system. The solution enables us to derive probability distributions analytically as well as the activation energies associated to switching between the coexisting different attractors that characterize the birhythmic system. Comparing analytical and numerical results we find good agreement when the frequencies of both attractors are equal, while the predictions of the analytic estimates deteriorate when the two frequencies depart. Under the effect of noise the two states that characterize the birhythmic system can merge, inasmuch as the parameter plane of the birhythmic solutions is found to shrink when the noise intensity increases. The solution of the Fokker-Planck equation shows that in the birhythmic region, the two attractors are characterized by very different probabilities of finding the system in such a state. The probability becomes comparable only for a narrow range of the control parameters, thus the two limit cycles have properties in close analogy with the thermodynamic phases.

Global stability analysis of birhythmicity in a self-sustained oscillator

We analyze global stability properties of birhythmicity in a self-sustained system with random excitations. The model is a multi-limit cycles variation of the van der Pol oscillatorintroduced to analyze enzymatic substrate reactions in brain waves. We show that the two frequencies are strongly influenced by the nonlinear coefficients $α$ and $β$. With a random excitation, such as a Gaussian white noise, the attractor's global stability is measured by the mean escape time $τ$ from one limit-cycle. An effective activation energy barrier is obtained by the slope of the linear part of the variation of the escape time $τ$ versus the inverse noise-intensity 1/D. We find that the trapping barriers of the two frequencies can be very different, thus leaving the system on the same attractor for an overwhelming time. However, we also find that the system is nearly symmetric in a narrow range of the parameters.

Stability of the synchronization manifold in nearest neighbors non identical van der Pol-like oscillators

We investigate the stability of the synchronization manifold in a ring and an open-ended chain of nearest neighbors coupled self-sustained systems, each self-sustained system consisting of multi-limit cycles van der Pol oscillators. Such model represents, for instance, coherent oscillations in biological systems through the case of an enzymatic-substrate reaction with ferroelectric behavior in brain waves model. The ring and open-ended chain of identical and non-identical oscillators are considered separately. By using the Master Stability Function approach (for the identical case) and the complex Kuramoto order parameter (for the non-identical case), we derive the stability boundaries of the synchronized manifold. We have found that synchronization occurs in a system of many coupled modified van der Pol oscillators and it is stable even in presence of a spread of parameters.

Thermal expansion of Josephson junctions as an elastic response to an effective stress field

By introducing a concept of thermal expansion (TE) of a Josephson junction as an elastic response to an effective stress field, we study (both analytically and numerically) the temperature and magnetic field dependence of TE coefficient $α$ in a single small junction and in a square array. In particular, we found that in addition to {\it field} oscillations due to Fraunhofer-like dependence of the critical current, $α$ of a small single junction also exhibits strong flux driven {\it temperature} oscillations near $T_C$. We also numerically simulated stress induced response of a closed loop with finite self-inductance (a prototype of an array) and found that $α$ of a $5\times 5$ array may still exhibit temperature oscillations provided the applied magnetic field is strong enough to compensate for the screening induced effects.

Moving and colliding pulses in the subcritical Ginzburg-Landau model with a standing-wave drive

We show the existence of steadily moving solitary pulses (SPs) in the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation, which includes the cubic-quintic (CQ) nonlinearity and a conservative linear driving term, whose amplitude is a standing wave with wavenumber $k$ and frequency $ω$, the motion of the SPs being possible at velocities $\pm ω/k$, which provide locking to the drive. A realization of the model may be provided by traveling-wave convection in a narrow channel with a standing wave excited in its bottom (or on the surface). An analytical approximation is developed, based on an effective equation of motion for the SP coordinate. Direct simulations demonstrate that the effective equation accurately predicts characteristics of the driven motion of pulses, such as a threshold value of the drive's amplitude. Collisions between two solitons traveling in opposite directions are studied by means of direct simulations, which reveal that they restore their original shapes and velocity after the collision.

Generalized coupling in the Kuramoto model

We propose a modification of the Kuramoto model to account for the effective change in the coupling constant among the oscillators, as suggested by some experiments on Josephson junction, laser arrays and mechanical systems, where the active elements are turned on one by one. The resulting model is analytically tractable and predicts that both first and second order phase transitions are possible, depending upon the value of a new parameter that tunes the coupling among the oscillators. Numerical simulations of the model are in accordance with the analytical estimates, and in qualitative agreement with the behavior of Josephson junctions coupled via a cavity.

Irreversible Dynamics of Abrikosov Vortices in Type-two Superconductors

The voltage shift RfIc with respect to the flux flow ohmic behavior of the current-voltage characteristic in type II superconductors is ascribed to the irreversible processes occurring when a vortex crosses defects. We include irreversible effects of the vortices-defects interaction into an effective law of motion. The obtained current-voltage characteristic at finite temperature is in agreement with experimental data.

Experimental realization of a relativistic fluxon ratchet

We report the observation of the ratchet effect for a relativistic flux quantum trapped in an annular Josephson junction embedded in an inhomogeneous magnetic field. In such a solid state system mechanical quantities are proportional to electrical quantities, so that the ratchet effect represents the realization of a relativistic-flux-quantum-based diode. Mean static voltage response, equivalent to directed fluxon motion, is experimentally demonstrated in such a diode for deterministic current forcing both in the overdamped and in the underdamped dynamical regime. In the underdamped regime, the recently predicted phenomenon of current reversal is also recovered in our fluxon ratchet.

Experimental Critical Current Patterns in Josephson Junction Ladders

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of Josephson junction ladders. At variance with the well-known case of a one-dimensional (1D) parallel array of Josephson junctions the magnetic field patterns display a single minimum even for very low values of the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}$. Experiments performed changing both the geometrical value of the inductance and the critical current of the junctions show a good agreement with numerical simulations. We argue that the observed magnetic field patterns are due to a peculiar mapping between the isotropic Josephson ladder and the 1D parallel array with the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}^{\rm eff}=β_{\rm L}+2$.

Broken symmetry of row switching in 2D Josephson junction arrays

We present an experimental and theoretical study of row switching in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays. We have observed novel dynamic states with peculiar percolative patterns of the voltage drop inside the arrays. These states were directly visualized using laser scanning microscopy and manifested by fine branching in the current-voltage characteristics of the arrays. Numerical simulations show that such percolative patterns have an intrinsic origin and occur independently of positional disorder. We argue that the appearance of these dynamic states is due to the presence of various metastable superconducting states in arrays.

Screening current effects in Josephson junction arrays

The purpose of this work is to compare the dynamics of arrays of Josephson junctions in presence of magnetic field in two different frameworks: the so called XY frustrated model with no self inductance and an approach that takes into account the screening currents (considering self inductances only). We show that while for a range of parameters the simpler model is sufficiently accurate, in a region of the parameter space solutions arise that are not contained in the XY model equations.
