A predictive model for the thermomechanical overstretching transition of double stranded DNA

By extending the classical Peyrard-Bishop model, we are able to obtain a fully analytical description for the mechanical resistance of DNA under stretching at variable values of temperature, number of base pairs and intrachains and interchains bonds stiffness. In order to compare elasticity and temperature effects, we first analyze the system in the zero temperature mechanical limit, important to describe several experimental effects including possible hysteresis. We then analyze temperature effects in the framework of equilibrium statistical mechanics. In particular, we obtain an analytical expression for the temperature dependent melting force and unzipping assigned displacement in the thermodynamical limit, also depending on the relative stability of intra vs inter molecular bonds. Such results coincide with the purely mechanical model in the limit of zero temperature and with the denaturation temperature that we obtain with the classical transfer integral method. Based on our analytical results, explicit analysis of the phase diagrams and cooperativity parameters are obtained, where also discreteness effect can be accounted for. The obtained results are successfully applied in reproducing the thermomechanical experimental melting of DNA and the response of DNA hairpins. Due to its generality, the proposed approach can be extended to other thermomechanically induced molecular melting phenomena.

On the influence of device handle in single-molecule experiments

We deduce a fully analytical model to predict the artifacts of the measuring device handles in Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy experiments. As we show, neglecting the effects of the handle stiffness can lead to crucial overestimation or underestimation of the stability properties and transition thresholds of macromolecules.

Unveiling the influence of device stiffness in single macromolecule unfolding

Single-molecule stretching experiments on DNA, RNA, and other biological macromolecules opened up the possibility of an impressive progress in many fields of Life and Medical sciences. The reliability of such experiments may be crucially limited by the possibility of determining the influence of the apparatus on the experimental outputs. Here we deduce an analytical model that we show to be coherent with previous numerical results and that quantitively reproduce AFM experimental tests on titin macromolecules and P-selectin AFM experiments with variable probe stiffnesses. We believe that the obtained analytical description can represent an important step forward in the interpretation of Single Molecule Force Spectroscopy experiments and intermolecular interactions phenomena.

A large-N approximated field theory for multipartite entanglement

We study the characterization of multipartite entanglement for the random states of an $n$-qbit system. Unable to solve the problem exactly we generalize it, changing complex numbers into real vectors with $N_c$ components (the original problem is recovered for $N_c=2$). Studying the leading diagrams in the large-$N_c$ approximation, we unearth the presence of a phase transition and, in an explicit example, show that the so-called entanglement frustration disappears in the large-$N_c$ limit.

Spatial separation and entanglement of identical particles

We reconsider the effect of indistinguishability on the reduced density operator of the internal degrees of freedom (tracing out the spatial degrees of freedom) for a quantum system composed of identical particles located in different spatial regions. We explicitly show that if the spin measurements are performed in disjoint spatial regions then there are no constraints on the structure of the reduced state of the system. This implies that the statistics of identical particles has no role from the point of view of separability and entanglement when the measurements are spatially separated. We extend the treatment to the case of n particles and show the connection with some recent criteria for separability based on subalgebras of observables.

Polarized ensembles of random pure states

A new family of polarized ensembles of random pure states is presented. These ensembles are obtained by linear superposition of two random pure states with suitable distributions, and are quite manageable. We will use the obtained results for two purposes: on the one hand we will be able to derive an efficient strategy for sampling states from isopurity manifolds. On the other, we will characterize the deviation of a pure quantum state from separability under the influence of noise.

Invariant measures on multimode quantum Gaussian states

We derive the invariant measure on the manifold of multimode quantum Gaussian states, induced by the Haar measure on the group of Gaussian unitary transformations. To this end, by introducing a bipartition of the system in two disjoint subsystems, we use a parameterization highlighting the role of nonlocal degrees of freedom -- the symplectic eigenvalues -- which characterize quantum entanglement across the given bipartition. A finite measure is then obtained by imposing a physically motivated energy constraint. By averaging over the local degrees of freedom we finally derive the invariant distribution of the symplectic eigenvalues in some cases of particular interest for applications in quantum optics and quantum information.

Wave Function Renormalization Effects in Resonantly Enhanced Tunneling

We study the time evolution of ultra-cold atoms in an accelerated optical lattice. For a Bose- Einstein condensate with a narrow quasi-momentum distribution in a shallow optical lattice the decay of the survival probability in the ground band has a step-like structure. In this regime we establish a connection between the wave function renormalization parameter Z introduced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2699 (2001)] to characterize non-exponential decay and the phenomenon of resonantly enhanced tunneling, where the decay rate is peaked for particular values of the lattice depth and the accelerating force.

Binary mixtures of condensates in generic confining potentials

We study a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates, confined in a generic potential, in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We search for the zero-temperature ground state of the system, both in the case of fixed numbers of particles and fixed chemical potentials.

Robustness of raw quantum tomography

We scrutinize the effects of non-ideal data acquisition on the homodyne tomograms of photon quantum states. The presence of a weight function, schematizing the effects of the finite thickness of the probing beam or equivalently noise, only affects the state reconstruction procedure by a normalization constant. The results are extended to a discrete mesh and show that quantum tomography is robust under incomplete and approximate knowledge of tomograms.

Classical Statistical Mechanics Approach to Multipartite Entanglement

We characterize the multipartite entanglement of a system of n qubits in terms of the distribution function of the bipartite purity over balanced bipartitions. We search for maximally multipartite entangled states, whose average purity is minimal, and recast this optimization problem into a problem of statistical mechanics, by introducing a cost function, a fictitious temperature and a partition function. By investigating the high-temperature expansion, we obtain the first three moments of the distribution. We find that the problem exhibits frustration.

Local Hamiltonians for Maximally Multipartite Entangled States

We study the conditions for obtaining maximally multipartite entangled states (MMES) as non-degenerate eigenstates of Hamiltonians that involve only short-range interactions. We investigate small-size systems (with a number of qubits ranging from 3 to 5) and show some example Hamiltonians with MMES as eigenstates.

Multipartite Entanglement and Frustration

Some features of the global entanglement of a composed quantum system can be quantified in terms of the purity of a balanced bipartition, made up of half of its subsystems. For the given bipartition, purity can always be minimized by taking a suitable (pure) state. When many bipartitions are considered, the requirement that purity be minimal for all bipartitions can engender conflicts and frustration arises. This unearths an interesting link between frustration and multipartite entanglement, defined as the average purity over all (balanced) bipartitions.

Entanglement of two blocks of spins in the critical Ising model

We compute the entropy of entanglement of two blocks of L spins at a distance d in the ground state of an Ising chain in an external transverse magnetic field. We numerically study the von Neumann entropy for different values of the transverse field. At the critical point we obtain analytical results for blocks of size L=1 and L=2. In the general case, the critical entropy is shown to be additive when d goes to infinity. Finally, based on simple arguments, we derive an expression for the entropy at the critical point as a function of both L and d. This formula is in excellent agreement with numerical results.

We diagonalize the XX model with a finite number of spins and periodic boundary conditions. We solve for the ground state, focus on the rapidity of the convergence to the thermodynamic limit and study the features of multipartite entanglement.

Multipartite entanglement characterization of a quantum phase transition

A probability density characterization of multipartite entanglement is tested on the one-dimensional quantum Ising model in a transverse field. The average and second moment of the probability distribution are numerically shown to be good indicators of the quantum phase transition. We comment on multipartite entanglement generation at a quantum phase transition.

Probability density function characterization of multipartite entanglement

We propose a method to characterize and quantify multipartite entanglement for pure states. The method hinges upon the study of the probability density function of bipartite entanglement and is tested on an ensemble of qubits in a variety of situations. This characterization is also compared to several measures of multipartite entanglement.

Characterizing and measuring multipartite Entanglement

A method is proposed to characterize and quantify multipartite entanglement in terms of the probability density function of bipartite entanglement over all possible balanced bipartitions of an ensemble of qubits. The method is tested on a class of random pure states.
