Scaling of normal-state transport properties of 1111 iron-pnictide superconductors

We show that the zero field normal-state resistivity above Tc for various levels of electron doping-both for underdoped, optimally, and overdoped LaO1-xFxFeAs, i.e. (x=0.05-0.075 and 0.1-0.2) and underdoped SmO1-xFxFeAs (x=0.06- 0.1) members of the 1111-iron-pnictide superconductor family-can be scaled in a broad temperature range from 20 to 300 K onto a single universal curve. The scaling was performed using the energy scale Delta, the resistivity rho(Delta) and the residual resistivity rho0 as scaling parameters as well as applying a recently proposed model-independent scaling method (H. G. Luo, Y. H. Su, and T. Xiang, Phys. Rev. B 77, 014529 (2008)). The scaling parameters have been calculated and the compositional variation of Delta has been determined. The existence of a universal metallic rho(T) curve is interpreted as an indication of a single mechanism which dominates the scattering of the charge carriers in LaO1-xFxFeAs (x= 0.05 to 0.075 and 0.1 to 0.2) and SmO1-xFxFeAs (x = 0.06 to 0.1) .

$c$-axis charge gap and its critical point in the heavily doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

Temperature-dependent inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_c(T)$, was used to characterise the normal state of the iron-arsenide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ over a broad doping range $0\leq x<0.50$. The data were compared with in-plane resistivity, $ρ_a(T)$, and magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, taken in $H \bot c$, as well as Co NMR Knight shift, $^{59}K$, and spin relaxation rate, $1/T_1T$. The inter-plane resistivity data show a clear correlation with the NMR Knight shift, assigned to the formation of the pseudo-gap. Evolution of $ρ_c(T)$ with doping reveals two characteristic energy scales. The temperature of the cross-over from non-metallic, increasing on cooling, behavior of $ρ_c(T)$ at high-temperatures to metallic behavior at low temperatures, $T^*$, correlates well with an anomaly in all three magnetic measurements. This characteristic temperature, equal to approximately 200~K in the parent compound, $x$=0, decreases with doping and vanishes near $x^* \approx$0.25. For doping levels $x \geq 0.166$, an additional feature appears above $T^*$, with metallic behavior of $ρ_c (T)$ found above the low-temperature resistivity increase. The characteristic temperature of this charge-gap formation, $T_{\rm CG}$, vanishes at $x_{\rm CG} \simeq$0.30, paving the way to metallic, $T$-linear, $ρ_c (T)$ close to $x_{\rm CG}$ and super-linear $T$-dependence for $x>x_{\rm CG}$. None of these features are evident in the in-plane resistivity $ρ_a(T)$. For doping levels $x x_{\rm CG}$.

Unusual disorder effects in superconducting LaFeAs_(1-d)O_0.9F_0.1 as revealed by NMR spectroscopy

We report 75As NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation in the superconducting state of LaFeAsO_(0.9)F_(0.1) and As-deficient LaFeAs_(1-d)O_0.9F_0.1. The temperature behavior of 1/T_1 below T_c changes drastically from a T^3-dependence for LaFeAsO_(0.9)F_(0.1) to a T^5-dependence for the As-deficient sample. These results, together with the previously reported unexpected increase of T_c and the slope of the upper critical field near T_c for the As-deficient sample, are discussed in terms of non-universal SC gaps in Fe-pnictides and the effect of As deficiency as an exotic case where nonmagnetic 'smart' impurities even stabilize an s+- wave superconductor or within a scenario of a disorder-driven change to s++ superconductivity.

Evidence for Pauli-limiting behaviour at high fields and enhanced upper critical fields near T_c in several disordered FeAs based Superconductors

We report resistivity and upper critical field B_c2(T) data for disordered (As deficient) LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta in a wide temperature and high field range up to 60 T. These samples exhibit a slightly enhanced superconducting transition at T_c = 28.5 K and a significantly enlarged slope dB_c2/dT = -5.4 T/K near T_c which contrasts with a flattening of B_c2(T) starting near 23 K above 30 T. The latter evidences Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_c2(0) approximately 63 T. We compare our results with B_c2(T)-data from the literature for clean and disordered samples. Whereas clean samples show almost no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 T, the hitherto unexplained pronounced flattening of B_c2(T) for applied fields H II ab observed for several disordered closely related systems is interpreted also as a manifestation of PLB. Consequences are discussed in terms of disorder effects within the frames of (un)conventional superconductivity, respectively.

Orbital and spin effects for the upper critical field in As deficient disordered Fe pnictide superconductors

We report B_c2 data for LaO_{0.9}F_{0.1}FeAs_{1-delta} in a wide T and field range up to 60 Tesla. The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_{T_c} by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_{+-} USC to CSC of an extended s_{++}-wave state or to a stabilized s_{+-}-state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.

Upper critical field measurements up to 60 T in arsenic-deficient LaO_(0.9)F_(0.1)FeAs_(1-delta): Pauli limiting behaviour at high fields vs improved superconductivity at low fields

We report resistivity and upper critical field B_c2(T) data for As deficient LaO_(0.9)F_(0.1)FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and high field range up to 60 T. These disordered samples exhibit a slightly enhanced superconducting transition at T_c = 29 K and a significantly enlarged slope dB_(c2))/dT = -5.4 T/K near T_c which contrasts with a flattening of B_(c2)(T) starting near 23 K above 30 T. This flattening is interpreted as Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_(c2)(0) approx 63 T. We compare our results with B_(c2)(T)-data reported in the literature for clean and disordered samples. Whereas clean samples show no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 T, the hitherto unexplained flattening of B_(c2)(T) for applied fields H || ab observed for several disordered closely related systems is interpreted also as a manifestation of PLB. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within the frame of conventional and unconventional superconductivity.

Si-induced superconductivity and structural transformations in DyRh4B4

DyRh4B4 has been known to crystallize in the primitive tetragonal (pt)-structure and to exhibit a ferromagnetic transition at 12 K, the highest magnetic transition temperature in the entire series of the RRh4B4 materials [1]. We show here that our silicon-added samples of the nominal composition DyRh4B4Si0.2 exhibit superconductivity below Tc ~ 4.5 K and an antiferromagnetic transition below TN ~ 2.7 K. The 12 K transition observed in the pt-DyRh4B4 is completely suppressed. Our annealed samples mainly consist of domains of the chemical composition DyRh3.9B4.2Si0.08. These domains contain two crystallographic phases belonging to the body-centred tetragonal (bct)-structure and the orthorhombic (o)-structure. We have reasons to suggest that superconductivity and antiferromagnetic ordering arise from bct- DyRh4B4 phase and, therefore, coexist below TN ~ 2.7 K.

New insight into the physics of iron pnictides from optical and penetration depth data

We report theoretical values for the unscreened plasma frequencies Omega_p of several Fe pnictides obtained from DFT based calculations within the LDA and compare them with experimental plasma frequencies obtained from reflectivity data. The sizable renormalization observed for all considered compounds points to the presence of many-body effects beyond the LDA. From the large empirical background dielectric constant of about 12-15, we estimate a large arsenic polarizability of about 9.5 +- 1.2 Angstroem^3 where the details depend on the polarizabilities of the remaining ions taken from the literature. This large polarizability can significantly reduce the value of the Coulomb repulsion U_d about 4 eV on iron known from iron oxides to a level of 2 eV or below. In general, this result points to rather strong polaronic effects as suggested by G.A. Sawatzky et al., in Refs. arXiv:0808.1390 and arXiv:0811.0214 (Berciu et al.). Possible consequences for the conditions of a formation of bipolarons are discussed, too. From the extrapolated muon spin rotation penetration depth data at T= 0 and the experimental Omega_p we estimate the total coupling constant lambda_tot for the el-boson interaction within the Eliashberg-theory adopting a single band approximation. For LaFeAsO_0.9F_0.1 a weak to intermediately strong coupling regime and a quasi-clean limit behaviour are found. For a pronounced multiband case we obtain a constraint for various intraband coupling constants which in principle allows for a sizable strong coupling in bands with either slow electrons or holes.

High-Field Pauli-Limiting Behavior and Strongly Enhanced Upper Critical Magnetic Fields near the Transition Temperature of an Arsenic-Deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_(1-δ) Superconductor

We report upper critical field B_c2(T) data for disordered (arsenic-deficient) LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and magnetic field range up to 47 T. Because of the large linear slope of Bc2 about -5.4 T/K to -6.6 T/K near Tc = 28.5 K the T-dependence of the in-plane Bc2(T) shows a flattening near 23 K above 30 T which points to Pauli-limited behavior with Bc2(0) about 63-68 T. Our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional and unconventional superconducting pairings.

Pair weakening in mixed rare-earth nickel borocarbides (R,R')Ni2B2C

In this study pseudoquaternary rare-earth nickel borocarbide superconductors RxR'1-xNi2B2C have been investigated predominantly in the diluted limit x << 1 or (1 x) << 1. In all of these materials structural disorder results in a reduction of the superconducting transition temperature Tc . Depending on the selection of the rare earth elements R and R' this disorder induced deterioration of superconductivity is combined with magnetic pair breaking of Abrikosov-Gorkov type or pair breaking of non-magnetic impurities in antiferromagnetic superconductors (Morozov-type of pair breaking).

The Superconducting Gap Behavior in the Antiferromagnetic Nickel-Borocarbide Compounds RNi2B2C (R=Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) Studied by Point-Contacts Spectroscopy

An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K Tc=6.5K) the SC gap has a BCS-like dependence in the AF state. The SC gap for R = Ho (TN=5.2K<Tc=8.5K) exhibits below T*=5.6K a single-band BCS-like dependence vanishing above T*, where a specific magnetic order occurs. The difference in the SC gap behavior in the title compounds is attributed to different AF ordering.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the antiferromagnetic superconductor HoNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting state

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on antiferromagnetic (AF) (T_N=5.2K) HoNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and two different superconducting (SC) states (T_c=8.5K and $T_c^*=5.6K) are reported. The PC study of the electron-boson(phonon) interaction (EB(P)I) spectral function reveals pronounced phonon maxima at 16, 22 and 34meV. For the first time the high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV are resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the 10-meV peak in PC EPI constant λ_PC is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high energy modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima, so the superconductivity might be affected by CEF excitations. The SC gap in HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, but vanishes at $T_c^*=5.6K<T_c, with 2Δ/kT_c^*=3.9. The strong coupling Eliashberg analysis of the low-temperature SC phase with T_c^*=5.6K =T_N, coexisting with the commensurate AF structure, suggests a sizable value of the EPI constant λ_s=0.93. We also provide strong support for the recently proposed by us ''Fermi surface (FS) separation'' scenario for the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in magnetic borocarbides, namely, that the superconductivity in the commensurate AF phase survives at a special (nearly isotropic) FS sheet without an admixture of Ho 5d states. Above T_c^* the SC features in the PC characteristics are strongly suppressed pointing to a specific weakened SC state between T_c* and T_c.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting state

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements of YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) spectral function with dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV and further weak structures (hump or kink) at higher energy at about 50 meV. No "soft" modes below 12 meV are resolved in the normal state. The PC EPI spectra are qualitatively similar for the different directions. Contrary, directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5 meV for the a direction and Δ_[001]=2.3 meV along the c axis; however the critical temperature T_c in PC in all cases is near to that in the bulk sample. The value 2Δ_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS value of 3.52, and the temperature dependence Δ_[001](T) is BCS-like, while the for small gap Δ_[100](T) is below BCS behavior at T>T_c/2 similarly as in the two-gap superconductor MgB2. It is supposed that the directional variation Δcan be attributed to a multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the borocarbide superconductor YNi2B2C

Point-contact (PC) spectroscopy measurements on YNi2B2C single crystals in the normal and superconducting (SC) state (T_c=15.4K) for the main crystallographic directions are reported. The PC study reveals the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) function with a dominant maximum around 12meV and a further weak structure (kink or shallow broad maximum) at higher energy at about 50meV. Other phonon maxima at 20, 24 and 32meV specified in the phonon DOS of YNi2B2C by neutron measurements [PRB, V.55, 9058 (1997)] are not resolved in the PC spectra pointing out to the main role of the low energy phonon modes in EPI. Directional study of the SC gap results in Δ_[100]=1.5meV for the a- direction and Δ_[001]=2.4meV along the c-axis which may point to anisotropic and/or multiband behavior. Noteworthy, the critical temperature T_c in all cases corresponds to that of bulk samples. The value 2Δ_[001]/kT_c=3.6 is close to the BCS one of 3.52, and the temperature dependence Δ(T) is BCS-like, while for the a-direction Δ(T) deviates from mean-field BCS behavior above T_c/2. The directional variation in Δcan be attributed to the multiband nature of the SC state in YNi2B2C predicted 10 years ago (PRL, V.80, 1730 (1998)).

Point-contact spectroscopy of the antiferromagnetic superconductor HoNi2B2C

The point-contact (PC) spectroscopy study of the electron-phonon(boson) interaction (EP(B)I) spectral function in HoNi2B2C reveals phonon maxima at 16 and 22meV and 34meV. For the first time the pronounced high energy maxima at about 50meV and 100meV were resolved. Additionally, an admixture of a crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitation with a maximum near 10meV and a `magnetic` peak near 3meV are observed. The contribution of the CEF peak in EP(B)I constant λ_{PC} is evaluated as 20-30%, while contribution of the high frequency modes at 50 and 100meV amounts about 10% for each maxima. PC Andreev reflection measurements below the critical temperature T_c=8.5K reveals two different superconducting (SC) states separated by T_c^*=5.6K which is close to the Neel temperature T_N=5.3K. Below T_c^* the gap Δin HoNi2B2C exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like behavior with 2Δ/kT_c^*=3.9. Above T_c^* the gap features in PC spectra are strongly suppressed pointing to a peculiar SC state between T_c^* and T_c, where incommensurate magnetic order develops.

Point-contact spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C (R=Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu)

An overview of the recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of the nickel borocarbide superconductors RNi2B2C in the normal and superconducting (SC) state is given. The results of measurements of the PC electron- boson(phonon) interaction spectral function are presented. Phonon maxima and crystalline-electric-field (CEF) excitations are observed in the PC spectra of compounds with R=Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, while for R=Y a dominant phonon maximum around 12 meV is characteristic. Additionally, non-phonon and non-CEF maxima are observed near 3 meV in R=Ho and near 6 meV in R=Dy. Directional PC study of the SC gap gives evidence for the multi-band nature of superconductivity in R=Y, Lu. At low temperature the SC gap in R=Ho exhibits a standard single-band BCS-like dependence, which vanishes above T_c^*= 5.6K< T_c=8.5K, where a specifc magnetic ordering starts to play a role. For R=Tm (T_c=10.5 K) a decrease of the SC gap is observed below 5 K.

Effects of calcium substitution on the superconducting properties of R(1-x)CaxBa2Cu3Oz (R=Eu, Gd, Er; 0=<x<=0.3)polycrystalline samples

The influence of Ca substitution on the superconducting properties of polycrystalline R1-xCaxBa2Cu3Oz (R = Eu, Gd, Er; x=0; 0.2; 0.25 and 0.3) samples has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction, ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements. The superconducting parameters such as critical temperature, inter- and intra-granular critical current and flux pinning are found to be strongly dependent both on Ca content and type of R element. The best combination of these parameters is found for the system Gd1-xCaxBa2Cu3Oz forming R1+yBa2-yCu3Oz clusters. The level of overdoping and the type of intergrain connection, were found to be influenced by the R element and the Ca concentration. Flux pinning in Gd1-xCaxBa2Cu3Oz is connected with the presence of R1+yBa2-yCu3Oz clusters.

Weak inter-band coupling in Mg$^{10}$B$_{2}$: a specific heat analysis

The superconducting state of Mg$^{10}$B$_{2}$ is investigated by specific heat measurements in detail. The specific heat in the normal state is analyzed using a recently developed computer code. This allows for an extraction of the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state with high accuracy and a fair determination of the main lattice features. One of the two investigated samples shows a hump in the specific heat at low temperatures within the superconducting state, accompanied by an unusual low value of the small gap, $Δ_π(0)=1.32 meV$, pointing to a very weak inter-band coupling. This sample allows for a detailed analysis of the contribution from the $π$-band to the electronic specific heat in the superconducting state. Therefore the usual analysis method is modified, to include the individual conservation of entropy of both bands. From analyzing the deviation function $D(t)$ of MgB$_{2}$, the theoretically predicted weak inter-band coupling scenario is confirmed.
