The Mass Gap Approach to QCD. II. The non-perturbative renormalization theory for the massive gluon fields

The previously formulated the mass gap approach to QCD, based on a new insights into its ground state(vacuum), makes it possible to exactly define the dynamically generated gluon pole mass. We developed a non-perturbative multiplicative renormalization program for the corresponding massive full gluon propagator. Its asymptotic properties have been analyzed, including the perturbation theory limit to the free gluon state, i.e., no asymptotic freedom effect. The peculiarities of the mass-shell structure of the massive full gluon propagator has been discussed. The inconsistency of the canonical gauge in QCD is fixed. Our approach does not allow the massive gluons to be mass-shell objects. This prevents them to appear in the physical spectrum (confinement of the massive gluon states). The massive gluons may exist in the vacuum or inside hadrons only. Expression for massive full gluon propagator in Euclidean metric for the lattice simulations is present. It is also shown that the massive solution has a correct limit to the massless full gluon propagator, when the gluon pole mass is to be formally put zero.

Jet Structure Studies in Small Systems

A study investigating a possible jet shape dependence on the charged event multiplicity was performed on collision samples generated by Monte-Carlo (MC) event generators PYTHIA and HIJING++. We calculated the integral jet shape and found a significant modification caused by multiple-parton interactions. By interchanging and enabling different model ingredients in the simulations and analyzing the results in several $p_T$ bins and event multiplicity classes, we found a characteristic jet size measure that was independent of the chosen tunes, settings, and jet reconstruction algorithms.

Predictions for $p+$Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV: Comparison with Data

Predictions made in Albacete {\it et al} prior to the LHC $p+$Pb run at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5$ TeV are compared to currently available data. Some predictions shown here have been updated by including the same experimental cuts as the data. Some additional predictions are also presented, especially for quarkonia, that were provided to the experiments before the data were made public but were too late for the original publication are also shown here.

Harmonic expansion of the effective potential in Functional Renormalization Group at finite chemical potential

In this paper we propose a method to study the Functional Renormalization Group at finite chemical potential. The method consists of mapping the FRG equations within the Fermi surface into a differential equation defined on a rectangle with zero boundary conditions. To solve this equation we use an expansion of the potential in a harmonic basis. With this method we determined the phase diagram of a simple Yukawa-type model; as expected, the bosonic fluctuations decrease the strength of the transition.

New Entropy Formula with Fluctuating Reservoir

Finite heat reservoir capacity and temperature fluctuations lead to modification of the well known canonical exponential weight factor. Requiring that the corrections least depend on the one-particle energy, we derive a deformed entropy, K(S). The resulting formula contains the Boltzmann-Gibbs, the Renyi and the Tsallis formulas as particular cases. For extreme large fluctuations (compared to the Gaussian case) a new, parameter-free entropy - probability relation emerges. This formula and the corresponding canonical equilibrium distribution are nearly Boltzmannian for high probability, but deviate from the classical result for low probability. In the extreme large fluctuation limit the canonical distribution resembles for low probability the cumulative Gompertz distribution.

A Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector

The construction of a new detector is proposed to extend the capabilities of ALICE in the high transverse momentum (pT) region. This Very High Momentum Particle Identification Detector (VHMPID) performs charged hadron identification on a track-by-track basis in the 5 GeV/c < p < 25 GeV/c momentum range and provides ALICE with new opportunities to study parton-medium interactions at LHC energies. The VHMPID covers up to 30% of the ALICE central barrel and presents sufficient acceptance for triggered- and tagged-jet studies, allowing for the first time identified charged hadron measurements in jets. This Letter of Intent summarizes the physics motivations for such a detector as well as its layout and integration into ALICE.

Predictions for p+Pb at 5.02A TeV to test initial state nuclear shadowing at the Large Hadron Collider

Collinear factorized perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) model predictions are compared for $p+{\rm Pb}$ at 5.02$A$ TeV to test nuclear shadowing of parton distribution at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The pseudorapidity distribution the nuclear modification factor (NMF), $R_{p{\rm Pb}}(y=0,p_T<20\;{\rm GeV}/{\it c}) = dn_{p{\rm Pb}} /(N_{\rm coll}(b)dn_{pp})$ and the pseudorapidity asymmetry $Y_{asym}^{h}(p_T)=R^h_{pPb}(p_T, η<0)/R^h_{pPb}(p_T,η>0)$ are computed using {\small HIJING/BB v2.0 model} and a pQCD improved parton model kTpQCD\_v2.0 which embedded generalized parton distribution functions (PDFs). These results are updated calculations of those presented in Phys. Rev. C {\bf 85}, 024903 (2012).

Inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5<y<4 and have been obtained by measuring the electron and muon pair decay channels, respectively. The integrated luminosities for the two channels are L^e_int=1.1 nb^-1 and L^mu_int=19.9 nb^-1, and the corresponding signal statistics are N_J/psi^e+e-=59 +/- 14 and N_J/psi^mu+mu-=1364 +/- 53. We present dsigma_J/psi/dy for the two rapidity regions under study and, for the forward-y range, d^2sigma_J/psi/dydp_t in the transverse momentum domain 0<p_t<8 GeV/c. The results are compared with previously published results at sqrt(s)=7 TeV and with theoretical calculations.

Predictions for p+Pb at 4.4A TeV to Test Initial State Nuclear Shadowing at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Collinear factorized perturbative QCD model predictions are compared for p+Pb at 4.4A TeV to test nuclear shadowing of parton distribution at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The nuclear modification factor (NMF), R_{pPb}(y=0,p_T<20 GeV/c) = dn_{p Pb} /(N_{coll}(b)dn_{pp}), is computed with electron-nucleus (e+A) global fit with different nuclear shadow distributions and compared to fixed Q^2 shadow ansatz used in Monte Carlo Heavy Ion Jet Interacting Generator (HIJING) type models. Due to rapid DGLAP reduction of shadowing with increasing Q^2 used in e+A global fit, our results confirm that no significant initial state suppression is expected (R_{pPb} (p_T) = 1 \pm 0.1) in the p_T range 5 to 20 GeV/ c. In contrast, the fixed Q^2 shadowing models assumed in HIJING type models predict in the above p_T range a sizable suppression, R_{pPb} (p_T) = 0.6-0.7 at mid-pseudorapidity that is similar to the color glass condensate (CGC) model predictions. For central (N_{coll} = 12) p+ Pb collisions and at forward pseudorapidity (η= 6) the HIJING type models predict smaller values of nuclear modification factors (R_{pPb}(p_T)) than in minimum bias events at mid-pseudorapidity (η= 0). Observation of R_{pPb}(p_T= 5-20 GeV/c) less than 0.6 for minimum bias p+A collisions would pose a serious difficulty for separating initial from final state interactions in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energies.

Generalised Tsallis Statistics in Electron-Positron Collisions

The scaling of charged hadron fragmentation functions to the Tsallis distribution for $0.01 \lessapprox x \lessapprox 0.2$ is presented for various $e^+e^-$ collision energies. A possible microcanonical generalisation of the Tsallis distribution is proposed, which gives good agreement with measured data up to $x\approx1$. The proposal is based on superstatistics and a $KNO$ like scaling of multiplicity distributions in $e^+e^-$ experiments.

Vacuum Energy Density in the Quantum Yang - Mills Theory

Using the effective potential approach for composite operators, we have formulated a general method of calculation of the truly non-perturbative Yang-Mills vacuum energy density (this is, by definition, the Bag constant apart from the sign). It is the main dynamical characteristic of the QCD ground state. Our method allows one to make it free of the perturbative contributions ('contaminations'), by construction. We also perform an actual numerical calculation of the Bag constant for the confining effective charge. Its choice uniquely defines the Bag constant, which becomes free of all the types of the perturbative contributions now, as well as possessing many other desirable properties as colorless, gauge independence, etc. Using further the trace anomaly relation, we develop a general formalism which makes it possible to relate the Bag constant to the gluon condensate not using the weak coupling solution for the corresponding $β$ function. Our numerical result for the Bag constant shows a good agreement with other phenomenological estimates of the gluon condensate.

Pion production in d+Au collisions at RHIC energy

We present our results on neutral pion pi0 production in pp and dAu collisions at RHIC energy. Pion spectra are calculated in a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD-based model. The model includes the transverse component of the initial parton distribution (``intrinsic kT''). We compare our results to the available experimental data from RHIC, and fit the data with high precision. The calculation tuned this way is repeated for the dAu collision, and used to investigate the interplay of shadowing and multiple scattering at RHIC. The centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factor shows a measurable difference between different shadowing parameterizations.

Where Does the Energy Loss Lose Strength?

Nuclear modification factors for pion production in AuAu and CuCu collisions are analyzed at very high transverse momenta. At p_T > 10 GeV/c, the R_{AA}(p_T) is determined mostly by the initial state nuclear modifications (e.g. EMC effect) and the non-Abelian jet-energy loss in the final state. At high momenta these effects together are strong enough to suppress R_{AA}(p_T) to below 1 at RHIC energies. We display results using HKN shadowing in our pQCD improved parton model. Result of a similar calculation at LHC energies for PbPb collisions are also displayed. Based on dN/dy estimates, a larger opacity value, L/λ_g = 10 +/- 2, is used for the produced partonic matter in central collisions at the LHC.

Pion and Kaon Spectra from Distributed Mass Quark Matter

After discussing some hints for possible masses of quasiparticles in quark matter on the basis of lattice equation of state, we present pion and kaon transverse spectra obtained by recombining quarks with distributed mass and thermal cut power-law momenta as well as fragmenting by NLO pQCD with intrinsic $k_T$ {and nuclear} broadening.

Is Strangeness Still Strange at the LHC?

Strangeness production is calculated in a pQCD-based model (including nuclear effects) in the high transverse momentum sector, where pQCD is expected to work well. We investigate pion, kaon, proton and lambda production in pp and heavy-ion collisions. Parton energy loss in AA collisions is taken into account. We compare strange-to-non-strange meson and baryon ratios to data at RHIC, and make predictions for the LHC. We find that these ratios significantly deviate from unity not only at RHIC but also at the LHC, indicating the special role of strangeness at both energies.

Thermal Dileptons at LHC

We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom spectra a critical ingredient.

Particle Ratios at High p_T at LHC Energies

Hadron production has been calculated in a pQCD improved parton model for pp, dA and heavy ion collisions. We applied KKP and AKK fragmentation functions. Our jet fragmentation study shows, that hadron ratios at high p_T depend on quark contribution mostly and less on the gluonic one. This finding can be seen in jet-energy loss calculations, also. We display the suppression pattern on different hadron ratios in PbPb collisions at LHC energies.
