Partially disordered Heisenberg antiferromagnet with short-range stripe correlations

Zero-point quantum fluctuations of a Néel order can produce effective interactions between quasi-orphan spins weakly coupled to the lattice. On the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}-$distorted triangular lattice, this phenomenon leads to a correlated partially disordered phase. In this article, we use matrix product state methods to study a similar model: the $S=1/2$ stuffed square lattice. Tunning the exchange amplitudes we go from a square lattice plus orphan central spins at $J'/J =0$, to the union jack lattice at $J'/J=1$, and a square lattice including all spins at $J/J'=0$. We calculate the complete antiferromagnetic phase diagram, dominated by ferrimagnetic and Néel orders, and compare with existing results. Most importantly, we find a partially disordered phase in the weakly frustrated regime. In this phase, the Néel order from the square lattice is unaffected, while the central spins form a collective state with exponentially decaying double striped correlations. We also study the role of quantum fluctuations by introducing an ordering staggered magnetic field on the square sublattice, and find that the central spins order ferromagnetically when fluctuations from the Néel order are suppressed.

Topological quantum phase transition in individual Fe Atoms on MoS$_2$/Au(111)

In a recent experiment [Trishin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 236801 (2021)] a rich physics was observed for Fe atoms on MoS$_2$/Au(111), characterized by three different behaviors depending on the spectral density of the substrate $ρ_c$: one dominated by a single ion anisotropy, one by the Kondo effect, and an intermediate one. Based on symmetry and previous works, we show that the appropriate model to describe the system is the anisotropic two-channel spin-1 Kondo model (A2CS1KM), which has an underlying topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) between an ordinary Fermi liquid and a topological one with a non-trivial value of the Luttinger integral. Solving the model with the numerical renormalization group (NRG), we show that the different behaviors can be explained in a unified fashion as a function of $ρ_c$, and correspond to both Fermi liquids and an intermediate regime close to the TQPT in the topological phase. Further experiments should confirm this transition.

Topological quantum phase transition of nickelocene on Cu(100)

Local quantum phase transitions driven by Kondo correlations have been theoretically proposed in several magnetic nanosystems; however, clear experimental signatures are scant. Modeling a nickelocene molecule on a Cu(100) substrate as a two-orbital Anderson impurity with single-ion easy-plane anisotropy coupled to two conduction bands, we find that recent scanning tunneling spectra measured at different microscope tip heights reveal the existence of a topological quantum phase transition from the usual local Fermi liquid with high zero-bias conductance to a non-Landau Fermi liquid, characterized by a non-trivial quantized Luttinger integral, with a small conductance. The effects of intermediate valence, finite temperature, and structural relaxation of the molecule position allow us to explain the different observed behaviors.

Iron phthalocyanine on Au(111) is a "non-Landau" Fermi liquid

The paradigm of Landau's Fermi liquid theory has been challenged with the finding of a strongly interacting Fermi liquid that cannot be adiabatically connected to a non-interacting system. A spin-1 two-channel Kondo impurity with anisotropy D has a quantum phase transition between two topologically different Fermi liquids with a peak (dip) in the Fermi level for D < Dc (D > Dc). Extending this theory to general multi-orbital problems with finite magnetic field, we reinterpret in a unified and consistent fashion several experimental studies of iron phthalocyanine molecules on Au(111) that were previously described in disconnected and conflicting ways. The differential conductance shows a zero-bias dip that widens when the molecule is lifted from the surface (reducing the Kondo couplings) and is transformed continuously into a peak under an applied magnetic field. We reproduce all features and propose an experiment to induce the topological transition.

Fully compensated Kondo effect for a two-channel spin S=1 impurity

We study the low-temperature properties of the generalized Anderson impurity model in which two localized configurations, one with two doublets and the other with a triplet, are mixed by two degenerate conduction channels. By using the numerical renormalization group and the non-crossing approximation, we analyze the impurity entropy, its spectral density, and the equilibrium conductance for several values of the model parameters. Marked differences with respect to the conventional one-channel spin $s=1/2$ Anderson model, that can be traced as hallmarks of an impurity spin $S=1$, are found in the Kondo temperature, the width and position of the charge transfer peak, as well as the temperature dependence of the equilibrium conductance. Furthermore, we analyze the rich effects of a single-ion magnetic anisotropy $D$ on the Kondo behavior. In particular, as shown before, for large enough positive $D$ the system behaves as a "non-Landau" Fermi liquid that cannot be adiabatically connected to a non-interacting system turning off the interactions. For negative $D$ the Kondo effect is strongly suppressed. The model studied is suitable for a comprehensive analysis for recent investigations of a single Ni impurity embedded into an Au chain.

Magnetic phase diagram of the infinite-U Hubbard model with nearest- and next nearest-neighbor hoppings

We study the infinite-U Hubbard model on ladders of 2, 4 and 6 legs with nearest (t) and next-nearest (t') neighbor hoppings by means of the density-matrix renormalization group algorithm. In particular, we analyze the stability of the Nagaoka state for several values of t' when we vary the electron density $(ρ)$ from half-filling to the low-density limit. We build the two-dimensional phase diagram, where the fully spin-polarized and paramagnetic states prevail. We find that the inclusion of a non-frustrating next nearest neighbor hopping stabilizes the fully spin-polarized phase up until |t'/t|=0.5. Surprisingly, for this value of t', the ground state is fully spin-polarized for almost any electron density 1 $\gtrsim ρ\gtrsim$ 0, connecting the Nagaoka state to itinerant ferromagnetism at low density. Also, we find that the previously found checkerboard insulator phase at t'=0 and $ρ$=0.75 is unstable against t'.

Correlated partial disorder in a weakly frustrated quantum antiferromagnet

Partial disorder --the microscopic coexistence of long-range magnetic order and disorder-- is a rare phenomenon, that has been experimental and theoretically reported in some Ising- or easy plane-spin systems, driven by entropic effects at finite temperatures. Here, we present an analytical and numerical analysis of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}$-distorted triangular lattice, which shows that its quantum ground state has partial disorder in the weakly frustrated regime. This state has a 180$^\circ$ Néel ordered honeycomb subsystem, coexisting with disordered spins at the hexagon center sites. These central spins are ferromagnetically aligned at short distances, as a consequence of a Casimir-like effect originated by the zero-point quantum fluctuations of the honeycomb lattice.

Topological quantum phase transition between Fermi liquid phases in an Anderson impurity model

We study a generalized Anderson model that mixes two localized configurations --one formed by two degenerate doublets and the other by a triplet with single-ion anisotropy $DS_z^2$-- by means of two degenerate conduction channels. The model has been derived for a single Ni impurity embedded into an O-doped Au chain. Using the numerical renormalization group, we find a topological quantum phase transition, at a finite value $D_c,$ between two regular Fermi liquid phases of high (low) conductance and topological number $2 I_L/π= 0$ (-1) for $D < D_c$ ($D > D_c$), where $I_L$ is the well-known Luttinger integral. At finite temperature the two phases are separated by a non-Fermi liquid phase with fractional impurity entropy $\frac{1}{2}{\rm ln}2$ and other properties which remind those of the two-channel Kondo model.
